Using Google SketchUp models in After Effects CS4
2009-03-26 16:54:00 A really cool new feature on After Effects CS4 is the ability to now take advantage of Photoshop CS4’s new 3d capabilities. Another new feature of Photoshop CS4 is the ability to open .kmz or .3ds files. If we take a look at the extensive free models we have on Google’s 3d warehouse we find a ton of models to choose from. If you can find the model you want on the 3d warehouse as a kmz you are in luck. Open the kmz in Photoshop CS4 and save it as a psd. Import that psd into After Effects CS4 as a composition (making sure to check the box that says “Live Photoshop 3D”). Now you have a new composition in After Effects with a 3D model as well as a null to control it and a camera to pan around it. If you can only find a skp of the model you want on the 3d warehouse, you will need Google Sketchup Pro to export that model out as a 3ds or kmz. Open the 3ds or kmz in photoshop save it as a psd, import that psd in After Effects and you are set.

2008-08-17 20:07:00 Spent the last hour upgrading to BlogCFC 5.9.1.001 from 5.9. This is my first upgrade since switching over to BlogCFC back in October 2007. The upgrade went pretty smooth, I did have to make some SQL changes but as always the documentation was well done. The really benefit I wanted was the one click kill comment in email that was introduced in 5.9.1. If you do not know about this it allows you to click the spam comments with a link in the admin email saving you from needing to login.

It didn't display correctly in Firefox and the grammar was very bad. The email didn't arrive after the promised 48 hours with my download links and activation key so I assumed it was a con. Then this morning I found an email only 24 hours late with the links and my activation key. I downloaded the software to a safe place then ran two different virus scans over it to make sure that it was OK before installing it. It all went to plan, but then I had to enter my activation key. This is where I thought it would fail, but even that worked. The last stage was to activate the key online via the Adobe Photoshop website. I wondered if they were sending everyone the same key, but no, even that worked! I now have a fully functioning legal and activated copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 Version 10 (the latest version) for absolutely nothing. That's over $800 of val...
