African-American visibility in advertising, Chicago's Commonground bus
2009-11-22 12:04:00
Photo courtesy of FoxBrownFox PR, Ahmad Islam (left) Sherman Wright (right) A commercial is a food or bathroom break for me. I usually don't pay attention to advertisements, but in the past few months I've noticed a pattern in marketing. It's not just the Walmart or McDonald's commercials. I'm seeing it in Tide, Pine Sol, Sprite, Lever 2000, Crest and the Roomplace commercials too. I'm seeing a boost in advertising visibility with African-American families, especially African-American fathers.   I wonder if advertising agencies are starting to get the hint about diversity in marketing or did President Barack Obama's family have something to do with the diversity, but either way I love it. It's nice to see multiculturalism on camera....

How to calculate Advertising Prices
2009-09-22 04:25:00
Setting a correct price for their advertisements is quite confusing for the beginners. Beginners who are blogging also afraid of quoting high price resulting in the loss of advertising deals whereas less quotes also make them live in pennies. Some of the basic guidelines to calculate advertising prices are as follows: Size of the banner – The size of the banner should be larger when the price is high. You can price the image banner of 125 x 125 at $30/month and the price of 250 x 250 banners can be $120/month. ] Image and text ads – The image ads are priced higher than text ads. The pricing difference is because the CTR or click-through ratio of image ads is higher than that of the text ads. Placement – Above the fold advertisements are priced higher than below the fold advertisements. The price of the advertisements appear in the footer are considerably lower than that of the header of the blog. Pricing model – The two popular pricing models are CPM model (co...

Ninth Circuit Reverses Dismissal of False Advertising Claim Over Wasp Larva
2009-09-16 06:04:00
Spalding Laboratories, Inc., sued its competitor, Arizona Biological Control, Inc. (“Arbico”), fo-r false advertising under the Lanham Act related to claims Arbico made about the developmental state of its wasps used for killing flies. The Central District of California granted Arbico’s motion for judgment against Spalding as a matter of law. On Sept. 9, the Ninth Circuit reversed and remanded, finding that a jury could have found for Spalding. In doing so, the court got right to the point: “The jury could have reasonably concluded that Arbico’s advertisements were literally false or that the advertisements confused or misled a significant portion of their target audience. For instance, Dr. Peterson testified that the number of emerged parasites would ‘definitely’ be lower than the number of larvae contained in a pupa, a fact that would support a finding of literal falsity if Arbico’s claims were found to refer to em...
Chocolate Spoof- Advertising will generate more PR
2009-09-10 09:37:00
In the past it was always the cola war between Pepsi and Coke. I never understood who finally won the battle and whose sales or saliency went up in the consumers mind. The trend continued in the cola space for quite some time but I have not off late noticed that kind of campaigns being released. May be both of them realized that it is sheer waste of money. Is there not a learning for other categories from this? But recently I happen to see Nestle trying a spoof on CDM, which is splashed across all channels in the electronic medium. Post the campaign, we saw more write ups on various portals on who is right and who is wrong and who is getting benefited.
MINI?s Minimalism
2009-09-08 15:00:00
A few months back our MINI-enthusiast friend sent me a link to MINI’s new commercial. The concept of the ad was “minimalism” and was communicated in a simple metaphor using markers. The MINI, played by a fine tipped, precision marker was being chased by (but easily out-running) a host of heavy-tipped ink-guzzling markers that ...

FMCG Advertising Online Aspire Greater Results – What Can Digital Med
2009-09-01 11:41:00
Its been quite a roller coaster ride for FMCG brands to come up with something of great value online for their brands. But there have been instances where brands have been launched online before being introduced directly to their end customers. Coca-Cola India in August 2009 launched a new integrated communication initiative – Fridge Mein Jayega, Bade Kaam Ayega – to support the launch of the 1.25 litre Fridge Pack of its soft drink brand Sprite. The digital campaign was launched in partnership with In.com, preceded by an online contest. This one one of those few instances where a cola campaign broke online without giving the electronic or print media to do so. FMCG brands rarely deal direct with their end customers so, like other manufacturers, they don’t interact directly with them. These brands could rely on a combination of print and media ads followed by in-store promotions to create brand awareness and maintain their market share. But, nowadays many supermar...

As the saying goes, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Which is why, in our latest installment of Advertising Anarchy (Our take on how networks might wish to consider promoting some of our favorite new and returning shows this fall), this TV Addict puts aside our animosity toward the CW with regards to their penchant of selling sex to young women (see: campaigns for THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE and MELROSE PLACE) in an effort to give SMALLVILLE fans a break. After all, if anyone deserves a little love, it’s the ridiculously-loyal SMALLVILLE supporters who have spent the better part of nine years helping the CW (formerly the WB) rake in hundreds of millions of dollars sans splashy advertising campaign.

Google Tests Putting Images in its Search Advertising – is it a One O
2009-08-13 20:25:00
Google it seems is revamping the way its search ads function. The famed PPC text ads which brought text and pay per click advertising back from a near death experience is apparently looking at adding thumbnails to sponsored ads. Barry Schwartz’s blog post which links to an interesting thread in Webmasterworld forums where this was first reported. The thread creator posted this: I just did a search and the top three results under sponsored links on the right side appeared to be affiliate ads. But, instead of just the regular text ads they had an 80×80 product image and then the title text for the product. This is quite similar to the products plus option they had added (in private beta still I guess) February, which showed images under a plus box – a box which opens on clicking a plus sign – along with retail results. Here’s a screenshot that was grabbed about the new set of ads. PPC Ad Screenshot courtesy Search Engine Land Google on its part hasn&rs...

False Advertising
2009-08-07 00:48:00
I keep reading about the health benefits of omega-3 essential fatty acids, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). In other words, fish. These omega-3's found in fish and fish oils are being said to help the developing brains of children. There are also claims that they help in behavior issues, such as; ADHD and OCD. In adults, cold-water species of fish, such as salmon, halibut and tuna can help prevent neurodegenerative diseases. It's also great for the heart! We don't eat a lot of fish. For one reason, right now, it's extremely expensive. The second? I'm not a huge lover of it and neither are my kids.We enjoy the occasional flounder. We've even tried wild turbot. But frankly, that's about it.But who doesn't want a smart kid? And I would definitely like a hand in the ADHD tendencies that my oldest exhibits. Google Goes Retro With Billboard Advertising
2009-08-03 15:25:00
Something has to be up when Google, salt of the Internet decides to use an antiquated form of 'push marketing' (namely billboards) to spread the word? It appears Google is desperate to be taken seriously in the corporate world, where customers remain reluctant to switch from Microsoft?s desktop Office Suite in favour of a cloudier option such as Google Apps. So Google is taking it to the street with outdoor advertising.

Bolly Brigade Game For More Digital Advertising
2009-07-20 19:37:00
For all the pirate vibes we put up,  the entertainment industry has been kind to digital advertising niche. If we begin to pick and choose industries which readily accept using digital media as a platform for advertising and promotion, bollywood and such mass entertainment vehicles will be at the forefront. So it is indeed good news when we hear that they are taking digital promotion even more seriously. Business Standard in what otherwise might seem just a PR pitch for Hungama digital and Eros has reported some interesting numbers of Bollywood’s digital spends. According to the report, the share of digital marketing which generally stands at around 15% of the marketing budget for the film has been steadily increasing. Recent or upcoming releases have seen spends inching towards two digit crores on the digital medium. Love Aaj Kal for instance is spending close to 3 crores on web promotion, Kambakht Ishq spent nearly 7 crores on online advertising.  Though it wouldn’t ...

Another Feather In Google’s Hat – Ring-Back Advertising
2009-07-20 07:58:00
Recently, news spread from Google House that they are planning to monetize Google Voice Service. You must be thinking how they are going to do it. But remember that its Google who always bring new and innovative ideas to the table. This time they are going to monetize by advertisement on phone. I’ll explain how, whenever you call someone, there is small time gap between when you dial a number and the person answered the phone, this is the place where google is going to play and insert short advertisements called “ringback advertising”. Google has already patented this. How will this work? Google is thinking about setting up a self serving audio advertising system which will work similar to Google AdWords. Complete with auction bidding, listen through ratio and quality scores. How Advertisers can take advantage? Similar to Google AdWords, advertisers structure their ads by various product categories, location, etc. which can easily be determined for each caller and then start ...

Are Digg Ads Reintroducing 'Push' Advertising?
2009-07-11 04:36:00
Trying to tame the new social media space with an effective advertising model is a daunting task for any platform in the social media space. Add the desirable real-time stream of consciousness component to the mix and you've even got the big boys like Google and Bing salivating all over the digital landscape. Tinker is tinkering around with monetizing Twitter, a feat that even their founders can't figure out. And now you have DIGG, the slightly dated social bookmarking site trying to reinvent itself by posting ads to their news content delivery process. Sounds a little like 'what's old is new again?'
8.5% Decline In Global Advertising, But Online Advertising Grows By 10.1% -
2009-07-08 08:18:00
ZenithOptimedia, a unit of French advertising group Publicis slashed its 2009 global advertising growth projections yet again. They now predict the global advertising market to decline 8.5% this year as compared to its previous prediction of a 6.9% decline. The forecast has revealed declines as high as 18.5% in magazine advertising, 13.8% in outdoor and 8.1% in radio in 2009. The report referred to factors such as unemployment as driving uncertainty around ad expenditure and creating a short-term trading environment with large volumes of activity being booked just two to four weeks in advance. How badly are the sectors hit? In the recession-struck first half of the year companies continue to cut advertising spending. The sharpest cuts were observed in finance, automobile and business travel. Whereas ZenithOptimedia’s ad report also stated that China’s ad growth should still grow 5.4% this year, and India’s 7.7%. Hence the worsening economic activity will strongly ...

Propelling The Call for a Creative Renaissance in Online Advertising
2009-06-30 18:44:00
Randall Rothenberg, CEO of the Interactive Advertising Bureau, has called for a “creative renaissance” on the Internet, which he said has been “an unthinking hostage to a direct-marketing culture and tradition that devalues creativity and its long-term effect on brands.” (Adage) Impressiveness never goes unnoticed, and we have seen that time and again on the web in the rise and fall of web assets. This is the same with advertising on any media, Zoozoo’s certainly being a worthy and recent example. Again, this isn’t a post on creative freedom and how brands need to look beyond numbers on the web, far from it. This is a post questioning the creative strength of the digital marketing men and women in India (on a general note). The point being mooted is that creative work online - whether they be banner ads, PPC copies, newsletters, web design or web content - don’t quite match up to the standards required for ads to perform on the web. Sure the...

Tips For Advertising Your In-Home Salon on Craigslist
2009-06-24 14:13:00
Are you an in-home salon owner? In-home salons are ideal because they enable owners to avoid expensive rent. Unfortunately, you may find it harder to advertise and market your salon. Luckily, there is an easy step you can take. That step involves visiting Craigslist.org and posting a services offered advertisement. Not only is it free to do so, but Craigslist is popular, meaning it reaches a large audience. When creating a services offered listing on Craigslist, you describe the service you have to offer, your experience, and your rates. As previously stated, it can be harder to acquire new clients for an in-home salon. Some consumers are uncomfortable coming into other people's homes. That is why you need to sell yourself. Why are you the best person to do their hair, nails, or makeup?Include a few pictures in your Craigslist.org advertisement. As previously stated, some consumers are nervous about going into homes. If you have a separate entrance and section for your in-home salon...
Conduit Launches Toolbar Marketplace - Brings Online Advertising to the Des
2009-06-23 19:40:00
Conduit has announced the launch of a marketplace for publishers who use its toolbar. Called Conduit Open it basically lets publishers share their content with more than 200,000 other community toolbar publishers. This according to Conduit will help the publisher content reach more than 60,000,000 users of community toolbars of the above 200,000 publishers. According to Techcrunch, the toolbar can be a useful marketing tool for companies because it helps market brands by showing logos to users every time they surf the net. And now multiple brands can tap into this potential. The offerings include major brands such as Fox News, Lufthansa, Major League Baseball, Greenpeace and more. That in essence is the biggest advantage of this move - exposure and branding. 200,000 publishers is not a small number, and though it might not help small publishers shoot their traffic through the roof, it will certainly have an impact at some point in the traffic. For bigger publishers however, this can ...

Microsoft to Create a Software Suite for Advertising Akin to Office Suite -
2009-06-23 05:28:00
Microsoft is planning a collaboration with Mediaworks to build a software system that marketers can use to track everything from search advertising and e-mail newsletters to CRM systems to TV buys in one place. They plan to call the software Media Operations Management System. Are You Using MOMS? I am unsure if MS would want an acronym like that doing rounds (anyway it’s not official), nevertheless, the question is who will benefit from this tool? The answer quite possible lies in what Quentin George, chief digital officer at Mediabrands said in the announcement, “We haven’t had the Office Suite, a productivity suite, for marketing” that fits marketing-management systems into a larger intelligent platform. He went on: “Donovan [Data Systems] does billing and reconciliation, another group does planning tools, another group does asset management. Are Video Advertising Pushing More Conversions Than Other Advertising?
2009-06-10 19:22:00
The question is straightforward, are videos performing better than other advertising online which include banners and text ads and all the new stuff that is happening. On the face of it there are a lot of impediments that video content faces online evident from our own existing experiences in India. However, there are some interesting numbers that we have been noting that suggests that videos might in fact be faring better than other media. Let’s start by the trend internationally. In an article covered in Entrepreneur.com in May video advertising views showed some remarkable numbers. According to a 2008 report by eMarketer on consumer media habits, the number of online video advertising viewers in the U.S. grew from 59.6 percent of internet users in 2007 to 67.2 percent of internet users in 2008. That number is expected to skyrocket to more than 80 percent by 2012. With players like Hulu and YouTube having gained a lot of ground this isn’t surprisngly really, but it ...

A Look At Location Based Services (LBS) In Mobile Advertising
2009-06-02 13:14:00
Mobile advertising is increasingly getting lot of attention from  everybody in the mobile manufacturing chain, be it the Device manufacturers, OS makers, app developers and even the mobile operators and interestingly the only thing that is single handedly driving this is Location Based Services. Until recently application developers had to pay to the operators everytime the application asks for GPs information, but now with advances like wifi-based location tracking and Google’s latitude developers are able access the location information for free which is actually resulting in proliferation of Location based services. Recently telephony electronics company Sagem teamed up with GPS experts BlueSky Positioning on technology that incorporates a GPS receiver and an antenna into the SIM card, this is one remarkable development as it’d help operators add location based services to those hundreds of millions of Non-GPS phones in the market.
