Financial advice, credit cards over debit cards discussed in Essence magazi
2009-11-08 03:28:00 Cover of November 2009 edition The November 2009 edition of Essence magazine is filled with excellent information, including a heartfelt conversation about black hair with actress Nia Long, the scoop on Chris Rock's "Good Hair" film, some black mens' perspectives on President Barack Obama and funny stories about brothers' worst sexual experience. In fact, this issue is one of the best issues I've ever seen from Essence magazine, and I'm always happy to check out the latest edition. And the financial section was useful, minus one piece of advice. One person suggested switching from debit to credit cards. That had to be the worst advice I've ever read on how to handle your finances. The rationale behind switching from debit to...

Baseball Needs Some Advice: "Less Is More"
2009-10-12 19:29:00 In case you have not noticed, the MLB postseason is underway!!! The problem is judging by the numbers (TV ratings) you are not watching. Why aren't you (baseball fan) compelled by the Colorado Rockies and Troy Tulowitski's mullet? Why are you (baseball fan) not interested in Jason Kubel going 0-the series? You (baseball fans) are not watching more Chip Caray in the last week than you ever did when he was manning the Cubs broadcasting booth? For all lack of an actual pennant race this season in any division, I figured when the stakes were raised....then people will watch. Unfortunately the ratings show, that even with a 14% increase in viewers overall for TBS playoffs, the numbers are compatible with...

Vermont Travel Videos on MSN
2009-08-31 02:32:00 MSN has an online video series hosted by Andrew Zimmern in which he travels around the country recording interesting places to visit, usually focused on food. Zimmern was host of the Travel Channel show, "Bizarre Foods" and now hosts Travel Channel's "Bizarre World" in addition to being a chef, writer, and teacher. Zimmern was recently in my area of Vermont to visit Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, Little River Hotglass Studio, and Cold Hollow Cider Mill. He doesn't just visit though - he gets right into production, creating his own Ben & Jerry's flavor in the test room, blowing a glass jar at Little River Hotglass, and making cider doughnuts at Cold Hollow. These Appetite for Life. episodes are a good way to get some behind-the-scenes views of popular attractions in Vermont and elsewhere. (c) 2009 Jeff Connor Grunberg Haus Inn

Alchemist Brewpub Update
2009-08-22 04:13:00 The Alchemist Brewery and Pub is one of the most popular spots in this area for tourists and residents alike. Anyone who is a beer lover should put The Alchemist on your must-do list (bucket list?). It's located on South Main Street in Waterbury VT.To keep up with what brewer John Kimmich is preparing, you can subscribe to the blog RSS feed. A recent entry talks about the gluten free offerings as well as other Summer Time Beers. John started preparing gluten free beer and food offerings after his wife and co-owner Jennifer discovered she needs to consume gluten-free products. The food there is excellent so be sure to give it a try too. Executive Chef Jeff Lang uses a lot of locally grown fresh produce in his imaginative menu which you can look over on the website before you arrive. (c) 2009 Jeff Connor Grunberg Haus Inn
Vermont Moose
2009-08-22 02:26:00 Mad River Glen moose population has grown by two this year. One of the most frequent questions we get here at the inn is "where can we go to see a moose?" There are several areas nearby where the possibility is greater but sighting a moose is a rare occurrence even for people who live and work in the forests. The moose photo at the top of this Vermont Travel Notes blog is a good example. It was taken by a guest in early November several years ago while he was driving on Route 100 between Warren and Granville VT, a popular place to spot moose because of the swampy areas alongside the road. It's not a particularly good photo because he quickly took the shot through the car windshield. He got some better quality photos after he stopped the car and got out but by then the moose was into the woods and walking away so the angle of the photo does not work well. But he was lucky to see it at all. If he had left here a minute earlier or a minute later he would have missed the moose entirely....
Some Free Advice for Whitney Houston
2009-08-21 12:55:00 "Some free advice for Ms. Houston"Published on Aug. 21Somewhere, Diane Sawyer is shaking her head. The interview icon has got to be at least tempted to text one of her former subjects.Whitney Houston will be the first guest when "Oprah" resumes Sept. 14., The Associated Press reported Thursday."Whatever you do, Whitney," Sawyer would type in an imagined exchange. "Do not say 'crack is wack.' "Sawyer, of course, will not contact the soul diva, though she really owes her an assist. After all, Sawyer conducted the infamous 2002 interview that exposed Houston to raging ridicule.Throughout footage still available on YouTube, Houston awkwardly dodged questions, laughed off viable-sounding rumors, and at one point, allowed then-husband (and forever fool) Bobby Brown to invade the...

Burlington Sunset Over Lake Champlain
2009-08-17 05:11:00 Photo by John Hughes We often recommend Burlington to our guests and, if they decide to go, we suggest they stay up there to watch the sunset over Lake Champlain. This photo is a good example of why. It's from my favorite photoblog, Megapickles, which has a new photo every day by St Michael's College professor John Hughes. I highly recommend bookmarking the site and checking it frequently. I've been following it for years and it consistently has great work.Jeff Connor Grunberg Haus Inn
Head Game
2009-08-11 18:17:00 I have dated this guy off and on for 6 years. The reason it has been off and on again so much is because we are both stubborn. I believe he is really passionate about his feelings for me but he can never talk to me about how he feels. He seems to always play head games and say one thing but mean something else. I really like this guy but we seem to be at different points in our lives. He also never wants to hang out with my friends and doesn't like to do some things I do. Satuday we had some people over and I invited some friends he didn't know. He ended up getting very upset and punching through a door. Needless to say, I asked him to move and he was out by Sunday night. We haven't talked since but I am not sure I am completely ready to call it quits. This is the first outburst he has had like this. Do I end it or try to work it out?- Kim
Kitchen Design - Advice From Allied Professionals
2009-08-09 23:45:00 Cathy sent me an email and asked if I thought there was a design flaw in a section of her cabinet design. I had to write back that, yes, I agreed with her that part of the design was flawed. Unfortunately, it was a finished picture of the kitchen that Cathy had sent me, which made it even more uncomfortable for me to give my opinion. The kitchen was installed, and it looked like it cost a pretty penny. Here are words from Cathy: "Lesson Learned I learned a big lesson the hard way and wish I had gone with my instinct to hire a kitchen designer during my kitchen design process. My contractor convinced me that it would make more sense for him to design the kitchen layout because he was also working on the electrical, plumbing etc. so there would be a cost savings to me if he designed it and worked with his preferred cabinet company. We decided to go ahead and in the end I thought the kitchen looked great until I noticed some design elements that look flawed to me. I believ...

Great reviews are common at the Weston Playhouse and the comments for this play indicate that the cast and crew of "Rent" are giving a traditionally strong Weston performance. Here are a few of those comments: "It blew me away! I’ve been coming to the Playhouse for close to 20 years and this production goes to the top of my “fave” list." "This was a wonderful show. A terrific cast, amazing voices, a fabulous set. You’ve got to see it…Go with an open mind and you’ll leave with an open heart. Well done all of you!""Came to the Sat. matinee and didn’t expect to be so overwhelmed by the show. First rate cast delivered a first class performance. The standing ovation was well deserved. How lucky we are to have such quality theater here -Broadway has nothing on Weston!""Rent" had a strong run off Broadway and later on ...
Time to Plan Fall Foliage Travel
2009-08-01 21:39:00 Our parking lot, September 27, 2008With all the rain and cool temps, it seems like we haven't started summer yet so fall has to be far off. And, while we have about two months before the fall season rolls in, planning for it should be started. Looking at our reservation book, I can see the early birds have been calling steadily already. We are far from full in late September and early October but we are close enough now that you should make lodging reservations very soon for the last week in September and first two weeks of October (maybe a week later in southern Vermont). Fall foliage is our busiest time of year and if you want to find a place to stay, especially on weekends, you should decide now. That's not true just for us - every inn and motel is filling in their most popular rooms. You can wait until the last minute if you must, but you will get either the smallest or the most expensive rooms as options. And I certainly would not drive or fly here without having your lodging...

Advice to the CTA on how to make $35 million in cuts
2009-06-26 13:00:00 The RTA board today confirmed that reduced tax revenues blows another $35 million hole in the CTA's budget this year. So, what should the CTA do? First and foremost, listen to and consider its customers.Us.And I like what I've heard so far from President Richard Rodriguez on that front:"We have to take a look at who is going to be impacted, who is more transit-dependent and where we can afford to basically reduce service and not necessarily eliminate service."Here are my suggestions for cuts:First, look internally. Cut any open vacancies that may exist. Look critically at spending on consultants, travel, etc.. Every penny counts. In identifying service cuts, choose the least travelled routes. Cut back on frequency. But avoid at all costs...

REV. RUN HAS SOME ADVICE FOR JON & KATE PLUS 8
2009-06-16 01:55:00 Rev. Run says he's not affected by the media attention ? or the so-called curse on reality show families. "We're not extremely ambitious to be these big stars," Run, 44, tells PEOPLE. "We hope to inspire people to see the value of being a family."With wife Justine, 45, Run is a "very involved and hands on" parent to all six of his children (Vanessa, 25, Angela, 21, JoJo, 20, Russy, 12, Diggy, 14, and baby Miley, 1 ½). "Everything is about them," he says. But raising a big family is not without its pitfalls ? and Run doesn't try to hide that from audiences. This season, the Simmons family faces a new challenge when JoJo is arrested for drug possession."When JoJo goes through his situation, I bring the cameras in, says Run, who insisted that the issue be a learning opportunity for his son and their fans. Product Creation Advice - Your Effective Ebook Selling Website
2009-06-13 13:28:00 The most important thing to remember when you're setting up a website to sell your eBook, or any other product, is to build your list community. When you build your list community, you are building an asset, a database you can market to over and over again with products, services and information they need.Your effective Ebook selling webpage should have only one option; you don't see any links going anywhere else. The only option to give is for a person is to exchange their first name and primary email address for something of value. Your website isn't about making an immediate sale, ot's about building a list community.A few more tips for your simple product selling website:Be sure your headline speaks to your audience's problem. Many times, websites talk about the author, or the product creator, but do not address how the site or the product can help solve a person's problem. People buy solutions to their problems. Address how you can help solve people's problems.Give somet...
