Q-TIP TRACES HIS ROOTS
2012-01-26 15:00:00 Thanks to OkayAfrica, sister site to the music-loving OkayPlayer, Hip-Hop icon Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest) was recently able to trace back his African ancestry. On the latest episode of the blog's "The Roots Of..." video series, Q takes an actual q-tip to his cheek and gives the research team a sample of his DNA. Tests later reveal that his lineage traces back to the West African territory of Guinea Bissau, a place that is rich in music influence. Amazing how it all connects!

China In Africa. The Real Story.
2011-12-31 11:08:00 Kudos to my basketball-challenged friend over at the always excellent (and often retrograde) What About Paris Blog for alerting me to the China in Africa: The Real Story blog. The China in Africa blog is written by Deborah Brautigam, who describes herself as follows: I'm a professor in American University's International Development Program in the School of International Service. I am spending 2011-2012 as a visiting fellow at IFPRI (International Food Policy Research Institute). I've lived in Asia and Africa, studied Chinese for years, and done research in more than a dozen countries in Africa. In January 2010 I published The Dragon's Gift, a book on Chinese aid and economic engagement in Africa (Oxford University Press -- revised and updated for the paperback edition, published May/June 2011). This blog takes up where that book left off. Stay tuned for analysis of China's "land grabs" in Africa, the China International Fund in Guinea and Zimbabwe, and so on....

Airtel Rules Africa With Subscriber Base Crossing 50 Mn: What About Quality
2011-12-01 11:45:00 Bharti-Airtel confirmed yesterday that its subscriber base in Africa has surpassed the 50 Million Milestone. World’s fifth biggest mobile operator, Bharti Airtel, started operations in Africa by acquiring Zain’s assets in 16 African countries in June 2010 at a cost of US$ 10.7 Billion. Zain’s subscriber base which was 42 Mn, had come down to 36 Million. After Airtel Africa took over the reins, it simply slashed mobile call rates & mimmicked the low-cost model it had perfected in India. This coupled with the outsourcing model to maintain low cost should help Bharti-Airtel to achieve $5 billion in revenue and $2 billion in operating profit from Africa by the year ending March 2013. Commenting on the milestone, CEO of Bharti Airtel, Manoj Kohli said, “Bharti Airtel Limited today celebrated a significant milestone when it acquired its 50 millionth mobile customer in Africa. It has achieved this milestone within just 17 months of acquiring Zain’s mobile operations ...

SWORD IN THE [AFRICAN] STONE
2011-11-10 15:04:00 Way before Disney's rendition of the Sword In The Stone story, the Ashanti Empire of West Africa buried its own sword courtesy of the tribe's first king, Komfo Anokye. Africa Is A Great Market Feels Bharti Airtel, Ups Investment By A Massive 5
2011-11-09 06:55:00 Despite facing a looming threat to ban new subscribers, Bharti Airtel, world’s fifth largest Mobile service operator has upped its investment by about US$ 491 Mn in Africa. By the end of September it had spent US$ 575 Mn, up from just $84m a year earlier. That’s a whopping 586% increase over last year despite the region yet to show any signs of Profit! The largest operator in India, currently operates in the following African countries: Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Madagascar, Niger, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Now, why would a company invest so heavily in the region that has yet to show profits? The answer is simple: Africa is one of the fastest “growing†continents. It has a population of 500 Million & most of it is saturated either around the Nile river or in the major business countries mentioned above. Owing to the poor state run Telephone infrastructure it is a...

IBM Clinches 10 Year IT Pact From Airtel In Africa
2011-07-13 12:41:00 Bharti Aritel, world’s fifth largest telecom company has awarded a 10 year contract to IBM for providing IT solutions to its employees in 16 countries in Africa. This is the second 10 year contract from Bharti for IBM. Last year in September IBM was awarded $1.5 billion contract for managing its IT requirements across 16 countries in Africa. Incidentally, Bharti recently tied-up with Comviva to manage the telecom giants VAS operations across 16 countries in Africa. Outsourcing of major operational functions has been key to Bharti Airtel’s low-cost, high-volume business model that has helped it to build a subscriber base of over 140 million customers in India. Replicating this model in African operations will be the key to the profitability of Bharti’s loss-making African operations, which it bought from Kuwaiti telco Zain in a $10.7-billion deal. Bharti Airtel and IBM’s relationship began in 2004, when the telecom operator selected IBM to handle IT and applicati...

Olu Gordon, the philosopher-king Sierra Leone and Africa never had
2011-04-21 13:42:00 A Revolutionary Life, by J L Samboma A giant has fallen with the death of Olu Gordon. He wore many hats in his 53 years, but above all he was a revolutionary socialist, a Romeo in love with the amorphous mass of the African dispossessed. A former University lecturer, he was a Pan-Africanist, a journalist and a philosopher. He could not take part in social revolution and he refused to rustle one up. But he made sure his life was a study in personal revolution -- one over which he had undisputed command.

Is Western-style democracy suitable for Africa?
2010-11-04 00:47:00 By Julian Samboma I was involved in a discussion on the above subject yesterday on the BNVillage discussion board. Following is my contribution to this very important subject: Of course, Western-style democracy is not suited to Africa. That's what has been on the menu since independence, with the important exception that successive political leaders chose to ignore the positions of opposition parties - or got rid of them when they became too meddlesome.

Mobile phones for farmers in Africa: Myth or reality?
2010-10-17 12:17:00 My first trip to Africa, goes back to 1994: Angola in the midst of the civil war. I "left" the continent end 1999, moving from Uganda to Kosovo. Bharti Ties Up With IBM In Africa
2010-09-21 09:00:00 Bharti Airtel’s venture into the African telecom market through Zain Telecom has not exactly been a nice one so far for the Indian company. We recently reported that Bharti Zain lost almost 13% of its subscriber base to Africa’s leader MTN. In order to redeem itself in the African continent, Bharti Airtel has now tied up with IBM in Africa to change the face of African telecom industry. Through this collaboration, IBM will be responsible for managing computing technology and services for Bharti Airtel in 16 African nations. Airtel plans to bring cheap and affordable mobile services to the remote areas in Africa through IBM. It may also be looking to incorporate a technology called Spoken Web which will enable users to just speak into the phone to search for information. Just recently Bharti announced its venture into the mobile handset business as well which poses unique challenges for itself as blogged earlier. Bharti seem to want to grow bigger in India as well as int...
