Fly The Spying Skies On Smerky Airlines
2009-06-09 00:59:00 (And I also posted here.)In his column yesterday, intrepid Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Michael Smerconish leads off with the following?Drivers today don't make a move without receiving instruction from their GPS. Kids communicate face-to-face using iChat on their laptops. Nobody leaves home without a BlackBerry. We read books on the Kindle, watch movies in the car, and buy music from our cell phones.Smerky must live in the ?high rent? district; I know plenty of people, including your humble narrator, who don?t own one of the latest doodads he just described (though I could download a ring tone to my cell phone, to be honest, but I?m not sure what the reaction would be if ?Secret Agent Man,? for example, started playing in the event that I were to accidentally leave my cell on and receive a call while meeting a client). But the real point he?s trying to make here is that video cameras should be installed in the cockpits of planes, in the wake of the tragic Brazilian air liner cra...

Airlines Come Together To Launch Travel Site Rang7 - While OTA’s Make
2009-05-19 15:15:00 Three domestic airlines in Kingfisher Airlines, SpiceJet and IndiGo have tied up to take on the OTA Bandwagon. In a bid to get rid of the agents commission and service charges the three have come together to launch an online travel portal called Rang7. Rang7 is managed by a separate entity known as ShiVik Internet Private Limited. Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines have earlier once withdrawn agent commission but had to soon restore as they were under pressure from thousands of travel agents across the country. Rang7 is currently also showing results from Jet and Kingfisher which means that there is a possibility that they too are part of this concentrated effort to beat the OTA. They have also launched a community MyIndia along with the site which gives information on India and its various facets like Destinations, Festivals, Monuments & Temples, or National Parks. Will Rang7 Be A Major Threat To OTA’s? In the short term its not a threat as online booking...

Northwest Airlines Logo(s)
2009-05-04 03:40:00 I've seen Northwest Airlines planes for many years but I never noticed something peculiar about them until it was pointed out to me a couple of weeks ago. The logo is obviously a compass marker pointing in the northwest direction when you view the plane from the port (left) side. But if you view the airplane from the starboard side, the logo is suddenly pointing northeast!Northwest is northwest no matter where it is viewed from. And it is so marked on every compass in the world. Why Northwest Airline chooses to do otherwise on one side of their airplanes is a mystery to me. If anyone knows why, I would appreciate hearing from you. The first one to respond gets a $30 discount voucher toward a stay here. By the way, Northwest (recently acquired by Delta) flies twice a day between Detroit (DTW) and Burlington VT (BTV). You can see flights from all the airlines into Burlington on the BTV website. There are 45 to 50 flights a day into Burlington from 12 airports in 10 cities. 2009 ...

American Airlines plane incidents at Chicago's O'Hare airport - CNN.com
2008-12-25 05:10:00 More at CNN.com: “(CNN) -- A passenger jet preparing to take off from the airport skidded off the runway at Chicago, Illinois' O'Hare and another plane was forced to return there after engine problems were reported, officials said.American Airlines Flight 1544 -- an MD-80 carrying 54 passengers and a crew of five -- was taxiing into takeoff position on Runway 22-L when it hit an icy patch, said airline spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan. No one was hurt, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said. The left tires and the nose tires slid onto the grass next to the taxiway, she said.”-- I can't remember a time when so many incidents of delays and accidents happened in such a small window of time. I wonder if this is tied to the poor maintainance spending of the airlines and the need for airport upgrades in general?
Continental Airlines 737 path off runway traced - The Denver Post
2008-12-22 22:59:00 More At The Denver Post: “The Continental Airlines 737 jet that departed a DIA runway Saturday night traveled nearly a half mile through fields, then up and over a taxiway and airport service road like a 4-wheeling Jeep before coming to rest on its belly a short distance from an airport fire station, a site visit for news media revealed today. The National Transportation Safety Board took a pool of reporters and photographers to the crash scene for a 20-minute visit shortly after noon today. The tracks made by the plane's wheels were clearly visible where they veered off runway 34Right and traveled over a field, crossed taxiway WC, then dropped down a steep embankment and traveled through a depressed area before bouncing over Kewaunee Street, an airport service road. One of the plane's main landing gears rested on the other side of Kewaunee, so it appeared that the jolt of hitting the raised roadway sheared off the main gears. The other main gear sat about 75 yards from the roadway...

Flying United Airlines from Vancouver to Altanta (via Chicago)
2008-11-13 15:00:00 I put in my travel request to Atlanta and was routed through Chicago. Seeing I had never been to the third largest city in the US before, I made a quick change of itinerary to include a few days stop in Chicago. So ... this is the series on my trip to Atlanta (again) and the Windy City, Chicago. As usual, the flight to Atlanta means a very early start. I normally opt for the first flight of the day which is about 6AM. I like early morning flight because by the time I land in Atlanta, it will just be 5PM'ish and that leaves me a lot of time to settle down and prep for the next day.

THE AIRLINES - GOOGLE'S LEAST LIKELY EVOLUTIONARY RIVAL
2008-07-28 20:25:00 As commodities, heavily price driven US airline brands are going the way of the old Greyhound Bus Lines and dodo bird. What needs are actually served by physical travel save sentiment? If an airline's overhead is so great that it cannot sustain itself, then what should or could an airline become without its hardware and overhead...and what prescient Chairman or CEO is asking this question? With baggage fees bringing in no more than beer money airline marketing seems missing in action. Sure airlines stand for travel, but what does travel stand for? Communication? Enrichment? and how can that be served by communication without travel? Who would be the first airline to compete with Google? And how unlikely would that be? With the first chinks appearing in Google's armour, could an airline remold itself into the next travel/search/communication engine? Is it more likely that this new business entity replace the Face Book? And with a slight twist of wrist revolutionize social marketing...

Airlines start exiting routes to cut losses - Singapore
2008-06-06 06:20:00 Airlines start exiting routes to cut losses - Singapore Qantas cuts capacity on Asian routes; SIA studies its options By VEN SREENIVASAN (SINGAPORE) Faced with the prospect of plunging earnings amid soaring fuel prices and flattish revenue growth, many airlines are cutting capacity and exiting routes. Mr Dixon: The rising cost of fuel has changed the way Qantas will have to do business over the next two years Qantas is just the latest to join a growing line of carriers which are exiting routes, sizing down capacity or just parking planes as oil stays stubbornly above the US$125 per barrel level, and threatens to rise even further. Just a week after it announced cuts on its domestic and trans-Tasman services, the Australian carrier has cut capacity on its Japan and South-east Asia routes, including some services launched barely a year ago. 2008-05-30 16:47:00 Um, what’s the deal with tsa locks anyway? Our luggage came with them but they seem kind of strange to me. I guess I don’t really understand the concept. Are they locks that keep the airline employees and other strangers out but allow the TSA in? Does that mean that all TSA agents have something like a skeleton key and they can open them? Well, I’ve worked for a few government agencies in my day, and I think it’s pretty safe to assume that not just the TSA can open those locks. Hang on, I’m going to look this up on wiki just to see if I’m on the right track. Even better, this is from the TSA website: TSA screens every passenger’s baggage before it is placed on an airplane. While our technology allows us to electronically screen bags, there are times when we need to physically inspect a piece of luggage. TSA has worked with several companies to develop locks that can be opened by security officers using universal “master” keys so ...
