Why Does Airline Food Taste so Bland?
2010-11-10 16:33:00
New research on the affects of background noise and how we perceive taste. While louder noise reduced the reported sweetness or saltiness, it increased the measure of crunch. The research is reported in the journal Food Quality and Preference. It may go some way to explaining why airline food is notoriously bland – a phenomenon ...
Electric Airplanes, Coming Soon to a Flight School Near You

Atomic-powered Airplanes?
2009-01-31 22:23:00
Would you fly on an atomic-powered airplane? In the 1950s, engineers spent over $1 billion to explore the possibility, scrapping the idea when they couldn't think of a way to protect passengers and crew from exposure to radiation. However, a UK-based project is taking up the idea again, proposing th
How Common are Airplane Bird Strikes?

How many bird strikes happen to airplanes?  According to the Federal Aviation Administration, there have been about 500 since the year 2000.  Out of those 500 collisions, about 166 had to make an emergency landing.  Bird strikes are estimated to cost around $600 million annually in plane damage. Horizon Hobby Mini Remote Helicopter Giveaway
2008-12-20 10:00:00
I'm pretty excited about today's giveaway, I have to confess that I've always thought these guys looked particularly neato but have never had a chance to put my theory to the test.Well I can report that 100% fun-ness was achieved. This, my friends, is a mini-remote-controlled-helicopt-er from Horizon Hobby that zips and dives at the touch of a finger--or two to be precise.I was sent one to review which was kind of a coincidence because just a couple days before when I'd asked David what he wanted for Christmas he said "A remote-controlled airplane." Apparently Santa has good hearing. So when it came Andrew and I decided that we really needed to give it a try. You know, in the interest of full experimentation and all that.Boy, we had a great time of it.We took it over to a nearby gymnasium on a Friday night to see how easy it was and I can report that not only does it come ready-to-fly right out of the box, including batteries, but it doesn't take much to send it flying around an...

Antique Model Airplanes for RC Flyers

Should We Design Processes Like Airplanes?
2008-11-11 15:15:00
As the ongoing discussion about standards for BPM continues, an interesting thread with Mr. Khan of Ultimus fame emerged. In response to his Don?t Forget the BPM Ecosystem article, I explained that standards always play a critical role in the development of mature industries, and drew further analogy to the airline industry that Mr. Khan felt compeled to challenge in a subsequent article. Unfortunately, his appreciation for the standardization that took place in both the commercial and general aviation markets seems to be fairly limited, and certainly not matched by facts that can be easily observed by any pilot today, myself included. The rest of the article is available at BPMLab.org.

EU Says Yes to Mobile Phone Use on Airplanes, Announces Regulation Plans
2008-04-25 08:47:00
Travelers crisscrossing the air over Europe will soon have a new way to occupy their time while en route: using their cell phones during flights. The European Union (EU) on Monday announced plans to begin licensing in-flight use of wireless communications devices and services.Service providers interested in launching offerings for fliers should be able to get EU approval before 2008 is out, AP reported Monday. Pricing is apparently the prime concern of the EU at this point, with the European Commission emphasizing that it wants to ensure in-flight cell phone service users won’t be unpleasantly surprised when they get their first bill.“We expect operators to be transparent and innovative in their price offerings,” said EU telecom commissioner Viviane Reding, in a Monday statement. “If consumers receive shock phone bills, the service will not take-off.”Reding predicted that, if pricing is managed effectively, this new type of mobile phone service should prove appealing to bu...

Airplanes [2]: Wight Quadruplane
2008-02-27 21:16:00
The more the merrier - when Howard Wright in 1917 designed a new airplane for the company White & Co based on the Isle of Wight (confused?), he took the then highly successful triplanes as the basis for his design and added a fourth. Somehow the development of razorblades comes to mind here as well. For some reason, he shortened the wings at the same time, resulting in one of the first airplanes that was longer than it was wide. All in all, the new design was a disastrous failure, not least due to the reluctance to leave the ground.

Airplanes [1]: A-12 Avenger II
2008-02-07 17:05:00
Que? Well, it's my blog and I'll blog what I want to. :)Ever since I was a teenager I have had a crush on military airplanes (I owned over 100 Airfix models), and when I bought a book on this subject last week in Houston, I got the idea to turn this into a new series in the blog. The emphasis will be on failures (always more fun), which have the added benefit that their unusual design also has some esthetic quality. A case in point is the flying wing attack bomber that kick off the series. The General Dynamics/McDonnell Douglas A-12 Avenger II was developed as a more sophisticated stealth alternative to the highly successful F-117A Nighthawk. Just before completion of the prototype in 1991, Cheney pulled the plug on the whole project, which had suffered from severe lack of management, with estimated costs per plane having risen to a steep 100 million dollars.
Japan To Reboot Space Program With Paper Airplanes
2008-01-22 09:10:00
I really don't know what to make of this story. University of Tokyo "researchers" and members of the Japanese Origami Airplane Association are trying to develop a paper "spaceplane" able to survive the flight back from the ISS to the Earth. If that doesn't seem ridiculous enough, the prototype being tested in an "ultra-high-speed wind tunnel" at the University of Tokyo?s Okashiwa campus is a mere 3.1 inches long. What, they couldn't afford to spring for a full sheet of paper? I guess it was a little snarky of me to run down their wind tunnel, since it is able to subject test items to 5,300 mile per hour winds. However, I find myself wondering if a paper airplane could even be subjected to 5,300 mph winds anywhere but in a wind tunnel. I'm thinking that the terminal velocity of a paper airplane is about twenty miles per hour.
