I?ve Put A New Fish In The Aquarium, What Should I Look For?
2011-07-30 20:00:00
Buying a new fish for the aquarium is without doubt exciting. We don?t keep aquariums just to look at a glass box! Is Keeping An Aquarium Cruel?
2011-04-02 07:16:00
Some would state straightaway that it is and others that it isn?t. Guessing the identity of who belongs to which answer doesn?t take a great deal of thought. The two obvious groups are those who are adamant about ?leave nature as it is? and guess who, marine aquarists. Of course there are many others with an opinion on the subject. Papalote Students Visit the Aquarium at Xcaret
2010-06-02 16:44:00
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of accompanying Cole's class from El Papalote School on a field trip to the aquarium at Xcaret. Admittedly, we have not spent a great deal of time exploring all that this local cultural park has to offer, but I was surprised to hear that they had an aquarium at all. I'm not sure if it is new or just something we have managed to overlook. As a family, we make a point of visiting zoos and aquariums in every area we travel to. Big or small, we enjoy them all as long as they are well thought out and the animals are carefully attended to. This aquarium, by our standards, was small but just right for these curious youngsters. Each student was charged with identifying ten sea creatures in the display and then recording the names in both English and Spanish. For the most part, our students were the only visitors on this morning so they pretty much had the run of the place. It was great to see them darting from tank to tank, calling out the names of the ...
Starting Your Aquarium Hobby
2010-02-23 06:01:00
Once you have allowed your new freshwater aquarium to run for several weeks without any fish in it to allow the beneficial bacteria to grow and to allow the water in your tank to cycle, it's time to start thinking about adding fish. The worst mistake you can make at this point is to run down to a fish shop and buy a bunch of pretty, shiney fish and throw them into your tank. It is very important for the health and well-being of your aquatic pets for you to think through the world you are creating. Here are some important things to consider:Add your fish a few at a time.It is important not to overwhelm your tank environment by adding a bunch of fish at once. Buy 2 or 3 fish and allow your tank to recover before you add more.Goldfish are never a good idea.Unless you are creating a goldfish tank, goldfish are not a great addition. Contrary to some popular theories, they are not even a good idea to use to cycle your tank. Goldfish are coldwater creatures and they will not do well at a t...
Starting A Fresh Water Aquarium Hobby
2010-02-23 05:53:00
The first fish for your freshwater aquarium should be tolerant of a variety of water conditions.  It is not unusual for water conditions to fluctuate during the introduction of fish, and you want your aquatic pets to have the best chance of survival as you get the hang of getting and keeping your water conditions under control.Your first fish also need to be easy to feed and accept a variety of foods.  Don't buy a finicky variety of fish that will only eat certain foods. Make sure that you are not buying fish that will outgrow your tank or outgrow their tankmates.  Some varieties of fish are fine as long as everyone is the same size, but if they become larger than their tankmates, they will eat them. The level of agression in the fish is important as well.  Some fish only become aggressive if there aren't enough of them in the tank.  Others just don't play well with others.  Agression will cause the fish to nip at each other, and the result...

A Large Aquarium Re-Start
2009-09-18 22:56:00
There are all sorts of aquarium sizes that are kept at home, though none as large as can be seen at a public aquarium as far as I know. Successful small aquariums from the very small 10 gallons to the larger 50 gallons, fish only or reef, are very beautiful to look at as a whole, but their main impact is in the detail particularly with a reef. Even in a very small aquarium, provided it is a well aged system, there are growths of different algae, sometimes different corals popping up, existing corals spreading, miniature life such as tiny worms waving around looking for food and tiny shrimps foraging about particularly at night. At night small snails could appear then hide away again when dawn arrives. There?s often more. How to Cycle A New Aquarium
2009-09-07 07:57:00
One important factor of success in keeping an aquarium is noticing the nitrogen cycle in your aquarium. Basically a nitrogen cycle is powered by beneficial bacterias that will process the waste ammonia from your fish and convert it into nitrites and then into relatively harmless nitrates. If you add fish to an uncycled tank, then sometimes the fish result in fin rot, ick and other common fish diseases. Fish can be seen gasping at the top of the aquarium. That is probably because of excessive ammonia in the water that cause fish stress. The only way to over come this is to wait until there are sufficient numbers of bacteria to convert the ammonia into nitrates. There are a few things that can be done to encourage the growth of the bacteria. The traditional method to cycle a new aquarium is to add a few ?hardy? fish that will produce ammonia wastes to encourage bacteria growth. This method of cycling is very stressful for the fish. Many become stressed, damaged or simply die during the ...
Phuket Aquarium
2009-06-26 09:13:00
I never seem to tire of Phuket Aquarium even after (about) 15 visits over the years, maybe more. We went the first time in 2001 when my daughter was a few months old and loved her reactions to the fish. We took her again a few months later and noticed how, as an older baby she paid more attention to the marine life. As she got older, different things fascinated her, and once she could start asking questions, well then Dad the Diver could start explaining all kinds of interesting fishy facts! It's been the same with our son who is now 4 years old. They always have new questions and it's always fun to visit the aquarium with them.We visited again last weekend on another sunny low season day. Phuket Aquarium is located at the end of Cape Panwa, to the SE of Phuket Town. I like the area a lot, one of our favourite restaurants is in the Panwa area, and there's some lovely scenery, particularly if you turn off the main road down to the aquarium and take the smaller road along the west ...

Starting A Marine Aquarium - the Very First Considerations
2009-04-01 07:19:00
Starting a Marine Aquarium - the Very First ConsiderationsAuthor: Peter CunninghamSeeing pictures of a healthy marine fish only or reef aquarium in books or on the internet, or even better, in reality at a public aquarium will cause just about anyone to appreciate the beauty and general fascination of them. Some people will wonder if they could have one, and the thought will shortly disappear. Others, however, will not forget so easily and will want to delve further into the possibility of having their own home aquarium. If the potential aquarist knows a friend who already has a healthy marine aquarium, then there is a source of advice available already. The friend will already have been through all the research and considerations. Often, however, the potential aquarist will want to find out for him/herself. That is very good, as the aquarium system will be understood thoroughly. Then there may not be a known marine aquarist available, so what is the first move? Dashing to the local ...

Saltwater Aquarium Setup
2008-11-14 05:16:00
Saltwater aquarium set up takes time but it is exciting adventure. It usually takes 4 to 8 weeks before you can add any saltwater fish safely to your saltwater aquarium.I know it is disappointing to wait too long before you can start putting fish into your saltwater aquarium, but you wouldn?t want to risk losing them.Saltwater fish are quite pricey. So I would say that patience is the key! Before setting up a saltwater aquarium, think about these things first: STEP 1: Choosing your Location, Aquarium Size and Aquarium StandThe first step in saltwater aquarium set up is choosing a location that is nowhere close to natural lighting sources. Close to windows, entrance that has a clear door where sun rays can come in and patios are a BIG NO! Intense sunlight can produce excessive algae which are a beginner aquarist's usual problem. A cooler room temperature that is well-ventilated would be the best.Choose a large enough location for your aquarium. Set up a level and well supported area ...
Some Videos at Phuket Aquarium
2008-11-02 15:22:00
We do like Phuket Aquarium. I have totally lost count of how many times we have been. I love taking the kids there and watching their reactions to the fish. As a baby they are amazed, then they start to look more closely, then they start to learn names, then they get older and ask questions about the fish. As a diver, most of the species in the aquarium are familiar to me so I am very happy to pass on some knowledge... and you know you can't fool a kid. After our last visit, my 3 year old boy was looking at one of the aquarium brochures I had picked up. There was a picture of a small orange and white fish. He asked me "what's this fish, daddy?". I relied "It's Nemo". He came right back with "No! It's an anemone fish!". Proud dad.So here's a few little video clips of the aquarium. Record searching keeps getting easier and easier; it used to be to find out about people, you had to go to city hall, or the library, or Domino's pizza (imagine how much information Domino's has about you from when you were in college -- what kind of pizza you liked, and, um... well, that's really about it. But that's enough, isn't it?)Now, to find out about people, you only have to go to the Internet, and specifically to the Goverment Registry of Marriage Records online. It's simple, quick and cheap: type in a name, a state, an approximate age, and get information on marriages for that person -- handy if you want to find out if the person your dating is being honest with you; or if you'd like to locate heirs or maybe collect on that money you were owed. For a nominal fee, you can get even more information.

Vancouver Aquarium
2008-08-23 05:51:00
I took Kasia to the Vancouver Aquarium to see the new baby beluga whale. Well, actually I was hoping to show her the whole aquarium, as we had with Tigana at this age, but somebody must have prepped her that the big thing at the aquarium was the new baby whale, so that's what she wanted to see, and she dragged me through the other exhibits at breakneck speed to get to the baby beluga. We had to stand in line for about 25 minutes, which wasn't too bad from my point of view though pretty much at Kasia's limit. When we finally got in, we received an orientation that I found interesting, and at which Kasia put up her hand and asked "What's the baby's name?" (They hadn't named her yet.) The orientation warned us that the baby was spending a lot of her time in an adjacent pool because the mother and grandmother whales were trying to teach the baby that the neighbouring pool was safe, even though there was only one entrance. So we went through to the viewing room, and sure enough, th...
