January 14 ain’t happening anymore as DoT and the defence ministry are yet to work out the specific frequencies or sub-bands of the airwaves, which can be assigned to telcos. Airwaves are yet to be emptied by the armed forces for the 25 MHz of 3G spectrum for the auctions. The auctions will be held before the end of this fiscal, said a DoT official quoted by ET. 3G auctions take place only after sector regulator TRAI issues recommendations on a slew of policy related issues. Later the Department of Telecom (DoT) announced yet another date for the auctions to take place i.e. January 14, two days after which the auction for broadband wireless access (BWA) and CDMA spectrum will be commenced. After many delays, the auction of 3G spectrum was attired for August-September 2009. Then again it was delayed, and the tentative dates were set at the end of calendar year. Recently, communication minister A Raja said, it might get delayed due to the Christmas holidays, but surely would be done before the end of financial year (March-2010). Indian Government which is expected to earn anywhere between 25,000 to 30,000 crores is not happy with all the delays. A major part of fiscal deficits can be closed with this earning. DoT Is Mulling A Significant Hike In 3G Auction Prices
2009-06-15 07:21:00 The ministry of communications in a bid to fasten things on 3G front may hike the reserve auction price for pan-India 3G spectrum. This recommendation is currently mooted by DoT and would soon be forwarded to cabinet ministry. Till date current 3G policy envises reserved price to be set at Rs 2,020 crore and accommodation of five players per circle. The new price is being pegged at Rs 3,540 crore by DoT also looking at earlier pricing of a minimum Rs 4,040 crores by the finance ministry. This may further wash down the expectation of cheaper 3G services in India. The department would also earn significant revenues by increasing total number of 3G players from the current five to about seven to eight players per circle. This would indeed fulfill government revenue target of Rs 40,000 crore from these auctions alone and avoid any fresh wave of troubles from finance ministry. When that friend is an online one, you feel even more helpless as it's pretty hard to reach through the computer and lend a hand during the extraordinarily tough times.
