Talking things through in your head may help autism
2012-01-25 19:54:00 Teaching children with autism to ?talk things through? in their heads may help them solve tricky day-to-day tasks and could increase the chances of them living independent lives when they grow up, British scientists said on Wednesday. Psychologists who studied adults with autism found that the mechanism for using ?inner speech,? or talking things through in your head is intact, but they don?t always use it in the same way as typically developing people do. The researchers found that the tendency to ?think in words? is also strongly linked to the extent of a person?s communication skills, which are rooted in early childhood.
Anxiety, other disorders more common in autism
2012-01-23 14:34:00 Autism tends to go hand in hand with a variety of other mental and behavioral conditions in kids, suggests a new study that highlights the fuzzy nature of autism diagnoses themselves. Researchers said that other disorders that often go along with autism - such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity- disorder (ADHD) or learning disabilities - may complicate the diagnosis, or slow down any improvement in kids who do get diagnosed and treated early. ?The most important message that (the study) underscores is that these children tend to have multiple disabilities, not just autism,? said Johnny Matson, who studies autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge but wasn?t involved in the new research.

Vaccines do not Cause Autism.
2011-02-05 03:12:00 Okay. I give up.Vaccines do not cause autism. Autism is a behavioral diagnosis. In order to receive the diagnosis of "Autism" a child must exhibit a certain number of behaviors over a certain time frame. If he or she does not do so, the diagnosis of "autism" is not warranted. There is no blood test for "autism.""Autism" can't be confirmed or "ruled-out" by laboratory analysis. It's strictly a behavioral diagnosis. Therefore, anything that causes physiological damage cannot directly "cause" autism.Ergo... vaccines cannot "cause" "autism." Vaccines cause other stuff. Vaccines cause encephalitis.Vaccines cause seizures.Vaccines cause immune system deficiencies.Vaccines cause gastrointestinal problems. Encephalitis causes mood swings.Encephalitis causes extreme pain.Encephalitis causes inattention and impulsivity.Encephalitis causes aggression.Encephalitis causes balance problems and difficulty relating to one's environment. The Long Term Impact of Vaccine/Autism Fraud Study
2011-01-06 16:01:00 You may have seen today's report from CNN.com entitled "Doctor Defends Retracted Autism Study." The physician states that he received money not only from the British Medical Journal, but also the Sunday Times of London - where he has been employed since the early 1980s. This physician was stripped of his medical license in May. I, along with other people, are trying to get people to let go and move on from the false assertion that vaccines are linked to autism. But, what will be the long term impact of not only this fraudulent study, but its affect on the public? On a daily basis, the press hammers physicians for accepting as much as a pen from pharmaceutical companies. Oh yeah, accepting even a pen is against the law. Maybe that's why I haven't seen anymore pharma pens around. Hmm... This false study will not only help perpetuate the false perception that vaccines are linked to autism, but also will hamper announcements of any future medical studies, as the question of bias an...

Children with autism lack visual skills required for independence
2010-12-21 14:02:00 The ability to find shoes in the bedroom, apples in a supermarket, or a favourite animal at the zoo is impaired among children with autism, according to new research from the University of Bristol. Contrary to previous studies, which show that children with autism often demonstrate outstanding visual search skills, this new research indicates that children with autism are unable to search effectively for objects in real-life situations ? a skill that is essential for achieving independence in adulthood. Previous studies have tested search skills using table-top tasks or computers but none, until now, has tested how children with autism fare in a more true-to-life setting. In a unique test room, 20 children with autism and 20 typical children of the same age and ability were instructed to press buttons on the floor to find a hidden target among multiple illuminated locations. Critically, these targets appeared more on one side of the room than the other.
What Magic Reveals About Autism
2010-10-28 03:11:00 To trick an audience, magicians often misdirect social cues, drawing attention toward one action and away from another. People with autism, a neural development disorder, have impaired social interactions. Therefore, one would assume that they would be less susceptible to a magician?s social manipulation than people without autism. However, a new study published in Psychological Science shows that children with autism spectrum disorder may actually be more likely to be fooled by a magic trick than children without autism. As people with autism have trouble interpreting social cues, Gustav Kuhn of Brunel University and his colleagues wanted to compare how teenagers with and without autism spectrum disorder react to the vanishing-ball illusion. In this magic trick, a magician throws a ball in the air a few times and on the last throw, only pretends to throw the ball (making a tossing motion and looking upward), while the ball remains concealed in his hand (see SciVee pubcast b...
Autism rates stabilize in Wisconsin schools: study
2010-10-25 06:24:00 Autism rates could be leveling off at just above one percent of children, Wisconsin researchers suggest. Between 2002 and 2008, they found the number of kids in the state?s special education autism category nearly doubled. But the increase was only seen in those schools that started out with very few autistic kids, hinting that the statewide rates may be stabilizing. Autism spectrum disorders, which range from mild Asperger?s Syndrome to severe mental retardation and social disability, affect about one in 110 children in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Rapid Rise in Medicaid Expenditures for Autism Spectrum Disorder Treatment
2010-10-24 03:51:00 Autism was described as early as 1940, but a marked increase in the prevalence for the broader class of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) during the past decade highlights the demand for treatment of affected individuals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the prevalence of ASD was one in 110 children in 2006 and increased at an average annual rate of 57% between 2002 and 2006.1 The rising prevalence has heightened concern about the financial impact of treating ASDs in the private and public health care systems.[1] The escalating health care expenditures associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in state Medicaid programs is the subject of a study by Penn State College of Medicine researchers in the November issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (JAACAP).[2] In the article titled ?Health Care Expenditures for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Medicaid,? Drs. Li Wang and Douglas Leslie used...
The Silence In Social Media – Will It Shout about Autism ?
2010-10-11 11:59:00 Well, frankly speaking, I have reached a stage of insecurity, wherein if I don’t check my emails, facebook & twitter before I board a flight or a train, it makes me nervous. I try to repeat the act in a train, when I find suitable signal for my datacard to work. If I am a wee bit good in guessing, I would be sure that there would be a plethora of souls like Me, too. Staying incommunicado with the world, for an hour, a day or an entire lifetime seems an impossible task for people like You & Me, who tend to think that we can’t survive without Social Media. As an initiative to create awareness about Autism, Social Networking Enthusiasts & Addicts, have decided to stay offline from Facebook, Twitter & other Social Media sites on Nov 1; and create a ‘Silent Virtual World’. The number of such users is expected to be approx 4.5 billion, worldwide. This act seems justified as the people who suffer from Autism face the major challenge of overcoming So...

Breaking News:CDC Concedes Vaccines can (and do) Result in Autism.
2010-09-12 03:11:00 ... vaccines didn't cause Hannah's autism -- the condition just "resulted" from the vaccines. The totally twisted and unsustainable United States government approach to vaccines and autism was on full display today. A few months after the federal vaccine court laughed at the idea that one has anything to do with the other, tossing out more than 5,000 cases at once, CBS reports HERE "Family to Receive $1.5M in First-Ever Vaccine-Autism Court Award" that the government awarded Hannah Poling $1.5 million for regressive autism that followed vaccination.

Holland Sucks: Autism is Medical and Unacceptable to Accept As Is.
2010-07-02 02:02:00 Not the actual country of Holland, mind you. I have nothing against it. In fact, I've never been there. Removing the barriers of autism
2009-08-31 15:30:00 Autism can build a wall of poor communication between those struggling with the condition and their families. While a personal computer can help bridge the divide, the distraction and complexity of a keyboard can be an insurmountable obstacle. Using a unique keyboard with only two ?keys? and a novel curriculum, teachers with Project Blue Skies are giving children with autism the ability to both communicate and to explore the online world. At the heart of the project is a device called the OrbiTouch. Human-factors engineer Pete McAlindon of BlueOrb in Maitland, Fl., conceived of the concept behind the OrbiTouch more than a decade ago as a way to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome and provide computer access to people with limited or no use of their fingers.

Art, Ambiguity, and Autism
2009-08-17 21:43:00 For reasons I won't disclose, I know more about Autism than I'd like to. A couple months ago, I said to a therapist in passing, "Working in the arts, trying to explain experimental art to normal people, it starts to feel like everyone has Autism, to some degree." Unfortunately for those of us around it, Asperger's/Autism is "the hot" disorder right now, from tons of awful films to former Playboy bunnies speaking nonsense about vaccines on Larry King. But the fascination in the disorder, and the incorrectly used term "the spectrum", piques the public's interest about a sometimes gifted, yet linear, mindset, and world view of absolutes. "The spectrum" model begs the question of how much ambiguity you can handle, to what degree do...
