New Study Shows Simple Task at Six Months of Age May Predict Risk of Autism
2012-05-20 21:53:00
A new prospective study of six-month-old infants at high genetic risk for autism identified weak head and neck control as a red flag for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and language and/or social developmental delays. Researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute concluded that a simple “pull-to-sit” task could be added to existing developmental screenings at pediatric well visits to improve early detection of developmental delays. “Research aimed at improving early detection of autism has largely focused on measurement of social and communication development,” said Dr. Rebecca Landa, study author and director of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders at Kennedy Krieger Institute. “However, disruption in early motor development may also provide important clues about developmental disorders such as autism.” Dr. Landa will present this and other new research on motor delay and how it impacts development of language and social skills at the In...
Developmental Woes Common in Siblings of Children With Autism
2012-05-16 11:46:00
One in three children with an older sibling who has an autism spectrum disorder, or problems with social interaction and communication, shows signs of developmental delay or autism-related behaviors by the age of 3 years, according to a new study. “It is clear that the younger siblings of a child with an ASD [autism spectrum disorder] may face challenges even if they are not themselves identified with an ASD,” study author Daniel Messinger, a professor at University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences, said in a university news release. “This new work identifies classes of outcomes in these children. We found that the majority of these high-risk siblings appear to be developing normally. However, a higher-than-expected proportion of the children face challenges related to higher levels of autism-related behaviors or lower levels of verbal and nonverbal developmental functioning,” Messinger added.

Autism Awareness Month
2012-04-10 13:00:00
April is National Autism Awareness Month. In this short interview above, I briefly mention the new data from CDC which states that now, 1 in 88 children have been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I did not get to mention this, but some parents are concerned about a possible redefinition of autism. In addition, just yesterday, there is a possible association with autism and maternal obesity. If you found this video helpful, I encourage you to check out other TV interviews at MikeSevilla.com. Also check out my twitter feed and follow me on twitter. Autism Redefined?
2012-04-06 05:24:00
April is Autism Awareness Month, and I'm going to be talking about this on local TV next week. As I was doing some background information on this topic, I found that experts are looking to redefine the diagnosis of Autism. One of the articles I read was "Parents Worry As Doctors Seek To Redefine Autism," from April 5, 2012 on MSNBC.com. (Also check out the news report above) Familiar terms like "Asperger's Disorder" and "PDD-NOS" would be eliminated and lumped into a new category. The traditional term "Autism Spectrum Disorder" would be redefined to only encompass those with more serious symptoms now. "Social Communication Disorder" is a term that will be a new category. Many parents are very concerned with the proposed definitions and re-definitions, mainly because they are concerned that their child will lose services. Frankly, I would be concerned as well. These new defintions are not permanent yet. So we'll have to see what happens...

Autism not diagnosed as early in minority children
2012-02-28 05:29:00
Early diagnosis is considered key for autism, but minority children tend to be diagnosed later than white children. Some new work is beginning to try to uncover why - and to raise awareness of the warning signs so more parents know they can seek help even for a toddler. ?The biggest thing I want parents to know is we can do something about it to help your child,? says Dr. Rebecca Landa, autism director at Baltimore?s Kennedy Krieger Institute, who is exploring the barriers that different populations face in getting that help. Her preliminary research suggests even when diagnosed in toddlerhood, minority youngsters have more severe developmental delays than their white counterparts. She says cultural differences in how parents view developmental milestones, and how they interact with doctors, may play a role.
Black Children and Autism: The Difference Is Black and White
2012-02-16 14:50:00
African-American children with autism are being diagnosed almost two years later than children of any other ethnic group, holding up their treatment, and in turn, their quality of life, according to research. The average white child is diagnosed around six years old, while Black children are not diagnosed until they?re almost eight. It may only seem like a small difference in time, but early treatment is the key to reducing the challenges parents stand to face ahead. It?s been found that though most Black parents start asking their pediatrician questions around the two years old mark, they?re usually brushed aside and told that the child will be fine or that they are just a late bloomer. Autism is a disorder that causes children to lag behind other children in terms of speech, behavior and the way they develop, as well as dealing with everyday tasks. Common early warning signs are noticing your child seems to have trouble with hearing you or talking to you. It can be diagnosed ...

Talking things through in your head may help autism
2012-01-25 19:54:00
Teaching children with autism to ?talk things through? in their heads may help them solve tricky day-to-day tasks and could increase the chances of them living independent lives when they grow up, British scientists said on Wednesday. Psychologists who studied adults with autism found that the mechanism for using ?inner speech,? or talking things through in your head is intact, but they don?t always use it in the same way as typically developing people do. The researchers found that the tendency to ?think in words? is also strongly linked to the extent of a person?s communication skills, which are rooted in early childhood.
Anxiety, other disorders more common in autism
2012-01-23 14:34:00
Autism tends to go hand in hand with a variety of other mental and behavioral conditions in kids, suggests a new study that highlights the fuzzy nature of autism diagnoses themselves. Researchers said that other disorders that often go along with autism - such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity- disorder (ADHD) or learning disabilities - may complicate the diagnosis, or slow down any improvement in kids who do get diagnosed and treated early. ?The most important message that (the study) underscores is that these children tend to have multiple disabilities, not just autism,? said Johnny Matson, who studies autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge but wasn?t involved in the new research.

However, the necessary role of environmental factors has been well documented. Prior research suggests that parental characteristics, such as age and level of education, may be associated with a risk of autism. Parental age has been shown to be associated with many disorders, such as schizophrenia, childhood cancer and fetal death. However, results from studies of parental age and autism are inconsistent.METHODS: In the present study, we investigated the association of autism with parental age in 179 autism cases and 1611 matched cohort children from Iran. [Epub ahead of print]Advancing paternal age and simplex autism.Puleo CM, Schmeidler J, Reichenberg A, Kolevzon A, Soorya LV, Buxbaum JD, Silverman JM.SourceTemple University, Philadelphia, PA, USA.AbstractDe novo events appear more common in female and simplex autism spectrum disorder (ASD) cases and may underlie greater ASD risk in older fathers' offspring. This study examined whether advancing paternal age predicts an increase in simplex (n = 90) versus multiplex ASD cases (n = 587) in 677 participants (340 families). Whether or not controlling for maternal age, results support a significant interaction of linear paternal age and sex of the child on simplex family type. Female ASD cases were significantly more likely to be simplex as paternal age increased, but the increase for males was not significant. Findings suggest that ASD arising from non-familial, de novo events may be far less prominent in males than in females, even if more prevalent in males, due ...

Although individuals probably have a genetic predisposition to develop autism, researchers suspect that one or more environmental triggers are also needed. One of those triggers might be the battery of vaccinations that young children receive. Using regression analysis and controlling for family income and ethnicity, the relationship between the proportion of children who received the recommended vaccines by age 2 years and the prevalence of autism (AUT) or speech or language impairment (SLI) in each U.S. state from 2001 and 2007 ...

Vaccines do not Cause Autism.
2011-02-05 03:12:00
Okay. I give up.Vaccines do not cause autism.  Autism is a behavioral diagnosis. In order to receive the diagnosis of "Autism" a child must exhibit a certain number of behaviors over a certain time frame. If he or she does not do so, the diagnosis of "autism" is not warranted. There is no blood test for "autism.""Autism" can't be confirmed or "ruled-out" by laboratory analysis. It's strictly a behavioral diagnosis. Therefore, anything that causes physiological damage cannot directly "cause" autism.Ergo... vaccines cannot "cause" "autism." Vaccines cause other stuff. Vaccines cause encephalitis.Vaccines cause seizures.Vaccines cause immune system deficiencies.Vaccines cause gastrointestinal problems. Encephalitis causes mood swings.Encephalitis causes extreme pain.Encephalitis causes inattention and impulsivity.Encephalitis causes aggression.Encephalitis causes balance problems and difficulty relating to one's environment. Seizures cause mood swings.Seizures...

The Long Term Impact of Vaccine/Autism Fraud Study

This physician was stripped of his medical license in May. I, along with other people, are trying to get people to let go and move on from the false assertion that vaccines are linked to autism. But, what will be the long term impact of not only this fraudulent study, but its affect on the public? On a daily basis, the press hammers physicians for accepting as much as a pen from pharmaceutical companies. Oh yeah, accepting even a pen is against the law. Maybe that's why I haven't seen anymore pharma pens around. Hmm... Children with autism lack visual skills required for independence
2010-12-21 14:02:00
The ability to find shoes in the bedroom, apples in a supermarket, or a favourite animal at the zoo is impaired among children with autism, according to new research from the University of Bristol. Contrary to previous studies, which show that children with autism often demonstrate outstanding visual search skills, this new research indicates that children with autism are unable to search effectively for objects in real-life situations ? a skill that is essential for achieving independence in adulthood. Previous studies have tested search skills using table-top tasks or computers but none, until now, has tested how children with autism fare in a more true-to-life setting. In a unique test room, 20 children with autism and 20 typical children of the same age and ability were instructed to press buttons on the floor to find a hidden target among multiple illuminated locations. Critically, these targets appeared more on one side of the room than the other.
What Magic Reveals About Autism
2010-10-28 03:11:00
To trick an audience, magicians often misdirect social cues, drawing attention toward one action and away from another. People with autism, a neural development disorder, have impaired social interactions. Therefore, one would assume that they would be less susceptible to a magician?s social manipulation than people without autism.  However, a new study published in Psychological Science shows that children with autism spectrum disorder may actually be more likely to be fooled by a magic trick than children without autism. As people with autism have trouble interpreting social cues, Gustav Kuhn of Brunel University and his colleagues wanted to compare how teenagers with and without autism spectrum disorder react to the vanishing-ball illusion. In this magic trick, a magician throws a ball in the air a few times and on the last throw, only pretends to throw the ball (making a tossing motion and looking upward), while the ball remains concealed in his hand (see SciVee pubcast b...
Autism rates stabilize in Wisconsin schools: study
2010-10-25 06:24:00
Autism rates could be leveling off at just above one percent of children, Wisconsin researchers suggest. Between 2002 and 2008, they found the number of kids in the state?s special education autism category nearly doubled. But the increase was only seen in those schools that started out with very few autistic kids, hinting that the statewide rates may be stabilizing. Autism spectrum disorders, which range from mild Asperger?s Syndrome to severe mental retardation and social disability, affect about one in 110 children in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Rapid Rise in Medicaid Expenditures for Autism Spectrum Disorder Treatment
2010-10-24 03:51:00
Autism was described as early as 1940, but a marked increase in the prevalence for the broader class of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) during the past decade highlights the demand for treatment of affected individuals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the prevalence of ASD was one in 110 children in 2006 and increased at an average annual rate of 57% between 2002 and 2006.1 The rising prevalence has heightened concern about the financial impact of treating ASDs in the private and public health care systems.[1] The escalating health care expenditures associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in state Medicaid programs is the subject of a study by Penn State College of Medicine researchers in the November issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (JAACAP).[2] In the article titled ?Health Care Expenditures for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Medicaid,? The Silence In Social Media – Will It Shout about Autism ?
