Antibodies to strep throat bacteria linked to obsessive compulsive disorder
2009-08-11 15:11:00
A new study by researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health?s Center for Infection and Immunity indicates that pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourette syndrome and/or tic disorder may develop from an inappropriate immune response to the bacteria causing common throat infections. The mouse model findings, published online by Nature Publishing Group in this week?s Molecular Psychiatry, support the view that this condition is a distinct disorder, and represent a key advance in tracing the path leading from an ordinary infection in childhood to the surfacing of a psychiatric syndrome. The research provides new insights into identifying children at risk for autoimmune brain disorders and suggests potential avenues for treatment. OCD and tic disorders affect a significant portion of the population. More than 25% of adults and over 3% of children manifest some features of these disorders. Until now, scientists have been unable to convincingly documen...

Why Eat Kimchi?
2008-05-28 21:01:00
Kimchi, also known as 'gimchi' or 'kimchee' is a fermented Korean food, equivalent to our sauerkraut.  Eaten as a side dish, its main ingredient is cabbage.  Kimchi has been eaten for the last 3000 years, and only recently (12th century) began to be prepared with the addition of chili peppers.  Other variations today include kimchi made of radishes, scallions, or stuffed cucumber.  Kimchi is seasoned with ginger, garlic, onions, and sometimes brined shrimp or fish sauce (anchovy based).Fermented foods like kimchi are known as healthy foods, and not just for the vitamin content (Vitamins A, B1, B2, Calcium, C, Carotene). Ann Louise Gittleman, author of The Gut Flush Plan writes that it's because they "feed and sustain the probiotic population in our digestive tracts," keeping our guts in good shape.  Named one of the top five "World's Healthiest Foods" by Health magazine, kimchi contains lactic acid bact...

Mother Spreads Bacteria, Viruses to Her Baby
2008-03-12 09:08:00
Bacteria and virus can be disseminated by mother to the baby when giving birth to the baby and in the first week of his/her life. Although many of it does not threaten baby’s health, there are some that could cause serious problems including involving death. When in the womb, baby grows in 'sterilized' environment, but as the amniotic membrane crack, microbe starts to enter the environment. It then exposes the baby to bacteria and viruses for the first time.As the baby comes out from womb and enters the birth canal, baby now been encased by organisms that stay in the mother’s vagina or skin. This includes bacteria that cause venereal disease.Body fluids including blood that protect the baby expose them to infection like HIV or hepatitis B and C.Baby bowel route then will be 'colonized' as he is birth. In a few days, bacteria as E-coli, enterococcus and bifidobacterium emerge in his excrement. This state is important because it helps in stimulating the development of the babyâ...

Researchers with LSU along with Montana and France, have recently found that the snowflakes your catching on your tounge are filled with bacteria. Their results were published Feb 29th in the Journal of Science. After examining several global locations, the team has found that the snow filled bacteria is most prevelant in France, although it's been located all over the world. The research can potentially reduce the droughts from Montana to Africa. The bacteria, however, is not only helpful , but has been found to sicken and kill plants by freezing injury in plants, which can result in horrible economic effects.
