Champ Serena Williams Heads To China Open, Sony Ericsson Championships
2009-09-23 14:44:00
By Kelly Jad'on Within this last week we’ve seen a side of Serena Williams that’s been long forgotten emerge from the dark side of international competition.  Though hotly criticized, it pales in comparison to Mike Tyson’s ear-biting episode against Evander Holyfield or the attack on Nancy Kerrigan by Tonya Harding’s ex-husband’s friends. Williams, a tough competitor on the line, apologized and will return another day to battle it out on the court.  Serena has fought against difficult days in her past as well.  Usually she bites her tongue, staves off anger and calls upon her inner strength and faith to see her way through a game. The youngest of five daughters, Serena found her way onto the tennis court, propelled by her father, encouraged by her mother, and trailing her older sisters.  The entire family coalesced on the courts, practicing daily.   Venus and Serena really excelled, and were finally allowed to participate ...
Beijing outskirts
2009-06-26 15:59:00
While cruising along the outskirts of Beijing (getting back from a tiring Mutianyu trip with my family)…we saw an array of fruits being sold. I read somewhere that the fruit farms were popular nearby the city. It actually reminds me of one of the outskirt county here in Manila called Tagaytay…but in Tagaytay it’s cooler and more relaxing (seeing the lake with the smallest volcano at the middle) We actually stopped by to buy some local fruits along the way. My mom acted coolly as she tried to manage her way to haggle..even oblivious to the local pricing, she used her instincts (which I envy I do not have in terms of buying food) Peaches…that were the best buy! The sweetest thing they were! Too bad we didn’t go straight back to the hotel thus some peaches rotted. Some rare blueberries were also found there. Somehow, the place doesn’t look so lively though…maybe it was because of a foggy weather.
China Power Summit 2009. May 22-23, 2009 In Beijing.
2009-05-01 20:57:00
The China Power Summit is going to be in Beijing from May 22-23 this year and China Law Blog's own Steve Dickinson will be a featured speaker. Steve will be reprising (and updating) his speech on how foreign companies can best protect themselves when getting into Chinese joint ventures. Steve spoke on this last year at "JPMorgan’s Hands-On China Series" and at JP Morgan's China Conference. Joint ventures are a very common (and sometimes necessary) vehicle for foreign companies seeking to enter into China's energy and cleantech fields. I forgot to ask Steve if he would be speaking in Chinese or in English, but due to the nature of the topic, I am guessing it will be English. If you want to read more on Chinese joint ventures, check out Steve's AmCham China Brief article, "Avoiding Mistakes in Chinese Joint Ventures" and my Wall Street Journal article, "Joint Venture Jeopardy?" In addition to Steve, other speakers at this event will include the following: Shu Yingbia...

Acrobats ? Dance-Kung Fu-Acrobatic Drama: Journey to the WestAnyone wanting to see an amazingly energetic show of acrobatics/dance should not miss this incredible performance based on The Monkey King story.Highlights of the show included a mind boggling scene of strength and flexibility by a male and female gymnast clad in body hugging white costumes as they performed acrobatic dance using incredible feats of strength and balance. This was the human body at its best! The final scene based in 'Hell' was another highlight of the show where the stage filled with incredibly fit acrobats bouncing all over the stage on trampolines performing truly inspirational acts as they spun in all directions while flying through hoops.Complimenting this incredibly diverse acrobatic/dance show was the staging of the where no expense has been spared on costumes, props and backdrops.Tickets can be bought online through http://www.piao.com.cn/ Ends 31st January 2009.http://www.piao.com.cn/en_-piao/ticke...

Beijing Gourmand Blog: China Through The Food Door.
2008-10-27 05:33:00
There are two kinds of people. Those who hate going grocery shopping, and those who love it. I fit into the second category. I love it for various reasons. I love food. Going to the grocery store is for me what going to a stereo store is for an audiophile or going to a book store for a bibliophile. But I also like grocery stores for what they reveal. A Whole Foods executive once told me that Whole Foods chooses locations with a high level of educational attainment. So just seeing a whole foods tells you there are a lot of people with advanced degrees living nearby. But going into one will tell you a whole lot more. My "home" Whole Foods here in Seattle has a massive seafood selection. The one in my brother's Houston neighborhood has a smaller fish section, but a much larger meat section. From this I conclude that educated Seattleites eat more fish than educated Houstonians, while the reverse is true for meat. The other day, I went into "my" Whole Foods this evening...

I miss Beijing!
2008-09-17 08:50:00
I know this post has arrived weeks overdue, but you have to understand the pain of setting up bank accounts, buying a new mobile phone, getting your alien registration sorted and going to various orientations. The first week I arrived in Japan I went to Numazu, Shizuoka to visit my old host family. It felt like I had never left. All the feelings of being thankful and slightly uncomfortable at the same time came rushing back at me. It was great to be able to see everyone again, but also knowing I would be out on my own in weeks time really kept me energetic and happy. So now I'm alone in Tokyo (besides the new friends I made in my apartment) and I really love it. I love being able to do what I want, whenever I want without really needing to consider anyone else besides my own selfish needs.I've been to Keio University several times for orientations and an exam. It's a small campus (compared to my USYD) but it's a beautiful place (especially the East gate) . The past few days I've...

Mid Autumn Festival
2008-09-15 05:03:00
China?s Mid Autumn Festival was celebrated on 14th September this year. Visitors will not only notice temperatures moderating as summer starts to wane, but will see locals loaded with beautiful looking bags and boxes exquisitely decorated as they exit crowded shopping centers. It is traditional for families to come together at this time of year. In China the full moon has always been a time for family gatherings. Some families visit local parks to view the moon, enjoy the cool night air, pray for a good year ahead and share mooncakes. The tradition is said to have started with the ancient ceremony of sacrificing to the Moon Goddess. These days mooncakes come in many shapes and flavours. There are snowy moon cades filled with mung bean paste, tea moon cakes containing tea and fruit combinations like black tea and lychee, tea and pomelo, green tea and plum or butter tea. Other harder to find mooncakes contain chocolate with hazelnut, kumquat paste, milk and egg yolk and even plum. Many ...
Beijing Olympic Traffic Restrictions
2008-09-06 02:14:00
With traffic on Beijing?s previously overcrowded roads now moving freely there has been much debate about the idea of keeping the odds and evens vehicle use law in place permanently. Website forums are awash with tens of thousands of people debating the traffic regulation. Many concede it will help improve Beijing?s air quality and traffic movements, however it is also pointed out that most of Beijing?s pollution comes from the factories.Whatever the outcome it is exciting to see so many people concerned to improve the environmental conditions in Beijing. The city has been a beautiful place to visit and live during the Olympic and Paralympic period.Do note that with the opening of the Paralympics tonight that tight traffic control measures are in place around Olympic Park. Expect the same conditions for the closing ceremony.Hotels in BeijingBooks on China and BeijingBeijing PersonalsTagsBeijing China Beijing 0lympicsBook the Fujian Hotel Beijing Book the Beijing Qianyuan Internation...

China For Business Goes Beyond Beijing And Shanghai.
2008-09-04 17:52:00
China Business Blog just did a post on China's best cities for foreign business, appropriately entitled, "New Cities On The Block." Beijing 7. Suzhou 8. Wuxi 9. Shaoxing 10.Shenzhen The Economist Magazine's Business Intelligence Unit, did its own China city ranking, based on economy, "market opportunities," labour market, infrastructure, and environment (mostly air quality) and its top ten ranking was as follows: 1. Shanghai 2. Guangzhou 3. Beijing 4. Hangzhou 5. Nanjing 6. Shenzhen 7. Tianjin 8. Qingdao Xiamen 10. Ningbo 11. Suzhou 12. Fuzhou Chengdu Dalian 15. Beijing musical traditions
2008-08-31 12:24:00
Park Music Beijing provides many parks for people to escape the confines of their apartments and enjoy a more natural environment while socializing with family and friends. One of the many favourite past times in Beijing parks is to practise music. People can be found playing traditional musical instruments or singing their favourite songs in many of the parks. Amateur and professional musicians can also be heard around some of the famous historic landmarks like the Temple of Heaven. Jingshan Park is awash with mass choirs each Sunday, along with many smaller groups or individuals enjoying their time outdoors. New Hotels in Beijing
2008-08-31 12:23:00
Beijing Hotels Update Beijing continues to have a high rate of new hotels being developed in preparation not only for the Olympics but also for the ever increasing numbers of tourism and business travelers visiting the city. The massive expansion in the hotel industry is not just in five star hotels but includes three and four star hotels along with the slow to develop boutique hotels. Increasing numbers of hotels will continue to be built after the Olympics to cater for growing demands of travelers. Enticingly stylish boutique hotels can be found developing in some of Beijing?s ancient hutongs among the courtyard homes and busy street life that characterizes the hutongs. Other boutique hotels have been newly built and prove more popular with the Chinese market than hotels developed from poverty associated courtyard homes. New Five Star Hotels include: The Opposite House www.theoppositehouse.com Building 1#11 Sanlitun LuChaoyang DistrictBeijing 100027Tel:...

Olympics
2008-08-28 11:25:00
Okay, I wrote this post about two weeks ago before I left to go to Suzhou and Shanghai, so it may seem a little old, especially now that I'm back in Beijing.Studying Chinese in Beijing during the 2008 Beijing Olympics is probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. The atmosphere is great. I love the Olympics, it's the only time I can spend all day watching sport without anyone nagging me, as everyone is doing the same thing. My favorite things to watch are of course my favorite sports, the Men's Basketball, Women's Volleyball and the Men's Tennis. I also always watch the Diving, Gymnastics and Track & Field but I've also developed a new liking to Fencing. A few day ago my friend Han and I went shopping at the Dongwuyuan Fuzhuan Pifa Shichang (the Zoo Fashion Markets). Although there was a large selection of clothes and everything was super cheap (20, 30RMB anyone? = AUD$3.5, $4.70), the clothes were so horrendously ugly that I wouldn't wear any of it even if they ...

Make sure and let everyone know what a wonderful place China is -- with so many people eager to help at all transit points! Oh, but please hand carry everything that you've purchased here, because forget about trying to ship anything. Not so easy for me, as I was dead set on shipping my computer (along with some random clothing that I wasn't planning on carrying around with me for the next 6 weeks, and a pair of running shoes -- doesn't seem noteworthy, but stay tuned). I had figured that shipping a computer (anywhere) wouldn't be easy, so I went in expecting to have some hassle. But there were many more surprises to come...

Beijing Olympics Quote Of The Day
2008-08-26 08:35:00
Of course this one is late, but I just heard it on The Daily Show, where Jon Stewart refers to the little girl who sang the opening night song, but whose face did not make it on TV: You thought your middle school days were tough? Imagine if your government got together and decided yohttp://calpolymbatrip.com/200-8/china/jon-stewart-is-still-a--god/u were not cute. UPDATE: Some consider Stewart worthy of deification and use him as part of their graduate level syllabus. On a somewhat related note (using pop culture as a learning device), while listening to Bruce Springsteen's, The Rising, this morning, I concluded that if one listed to every song by Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Marvin Gaye, one ought to get at least 16 hours college credit in sociology, political science and US history, 1965-2008. Do you agree?

Beijing Olympics - The beginnning of a 24 days penance
2008-08-24 02:51:00
It was 08:08 PM on the 8th of August 2008. A point in the day when all counters of life were at '8' - a number some considered auspicious and yet others not so auspicious, the reason for which, I really do not know. Beijing was lit up with fireworks and lightings and the Bird's Nest hosted the grand opening ceremony of the Olympics Games. China has spent a huge amount of money on hosting this Olympics which is going to be an event spanning 24 days in the month of August. There are quite a few gold medals to be won in the games. The total cost of the celebrations in the opening ceremony of the Games was about $70,00,000. The next 24 days is going to be festive season for everyone. Television news channels which had not had any scoops for the past few days will have plenty of things to cover. They would for sure make huge money covering the entire event. So will the sponsors, not to talk about the participants, who have spent their lives waiting for this event. It i...
