Support for biofuel subsidies collapsing in Canadian parliament
2008-05-03 15:40:00 The single most expensive environmental initiative put forward by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper (Conservative) was a biofuels initiative that is now seeing significant new opposition. The CDN$2.2 billion (about a $1 trillion at current exchange rates) was intended to provide incentives for biofuel development north of the border. However, recent spikes in food prices and criticism of using food crops to make transportation fuel has caused some who previously supported the plan to switch sides.Opposition International Development critic (Liberal) Keith Martin went as far as calling for a moratorium on biofuel subsidies until the problems are better understood. NDP members of parliament also opposed the plan while the Bloc Quebecouis officially supports it. However, Bloc environment critic Bernard Bigras is opposed to the use of corn ethanol. Conservative Environment Minister John Baird is arguing in favor of the legislation and says that $500 million of the total is set asid...

Brew your Own BioFuel for $1 a Gallon
2008-05-02 00:00:00 Ethanol is a rather controversial technology. While many automotive companies are heavily investing in developing ethanol production, releasing ethanol vehicles, and building up the ethanol infrastructure, the process has been much maligned by the United Nations and academia. The UN and various professors have released regular statements blasting the technology for threatening to raise food prices on basic food stocks such as corn. They say that this is already happening, and is causing an increase in famine worldwide.

New ethanol sensor could make for safer biofuel refineries
2008-04-30 00:05:00 Every now and again, we hear a report about some dangerous explosion or accident at a biofuel refinery. While there are a variety of causes for these events, one way to prevent at least some of them is to identify when dangerous concentrations of fuel build up and disperse those gases. A new detector by Sensor Electronics of Minneapolis can identify that situation, and Domestic Fuel writes that the device "is thought to be ideal for protecting biofuel refineries." The small sensor can be used anywhere where ethanol will be pumped, processed or stored, and can "sniff" out ethanol and send a warning if the concentration gets too high. The sensor is only eight inches high and 2.5 inches in diameter and quite weatherproof, so it should be able to work in a lot of environments. [Source: Domestic Fuel]
News: UN calls impact of biofuel on food crisis "criminal"
2008-04-29 23:55:00 Jean Ziegler, the United Nations special rapporteur on the right to food, said the United States and the European Union have taken a "criminal path" by contributing to an explosive rise in global food prices by using food crops to produce biofuels.Ziegler stated that last year the United States used a third of its corn crop to create biofuels, while the European Union is planning to have 10 percent of its petrol supplied by biofuels. He called for a five-year moratorium on the production of biofuels.Ziegler also said that speculation on international markets is behind 30 percent of the increase in food prices. (Full)US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice admitted that setting aside farmland to produce biofuels like ethanol may be partly to blame for driving up world food prices. News: When Green Goes Commercial: The Waste of Biofuel Production
2008-04-26 01:06:00 Biofuel is all about blue skies and clean water, a world with less pollution. An ideal like so many, which turns foul when the commercial world gets hold of it. Once the chase for profit comes primary, even the cleanest biofuel turns out to be a culprit to nature. When the Black Warrior River in Alabama got covered with an oily, fetid substance, the source of the pollution was traced to the Alabama Biodiesel Corporation plant, the state's biodiesel plant, a refinery turning soybean oil into earth-friendly fuel. The spills, resembling Italian salad dressing, were 450 times higher than permit levels allow and are similar to others that have come from biofuel plants in the Midwest.According to the National Biodiesel Board, a trade group, biodiesel is nontoxic, biodegradable and suitable for sensitive environments, but scientists say that position understates its potential environmental impact: As with most organic materials, oil and glycerin deplete the oxygen content of water very qui...

Biofuel: filling your tank with hunger
2008-04-23 23:59:00 The UN is calling for action to avoid the "silent tsunami of rising food prices which threatens to push more than 100 million people worldwide into hunger" (http://www.un.org/). Protests against rising costs of basic foods already started in Haiti, Mexico, the Philippines, Bangladesh, South Africa.... Sub-Saharan Africans continue their decades-old silent protest, dying slowly, quietly, dryly.I recall now the bad feeling I had last year when I read about Bush's visit to ethanol-driven Brazil. Biofuel production is said to be responsible for at least one third of the recent increase in food prices. It was already being called ?deforestation fuel?. Now it?s also ?hunger fuel?.But it?s bio. «Quand je dors chez mon copain, on mange tout le temps bio» (Sanseverino, «Cette conne m'ennuie»). Blogging in Luxembourg. In engrish.

The European Commission says no to reviewing biofuel percentage goal
2008-04-15 22:42:00 As you might know, the EU has plans to make a 10 percent blend of biofuels mandatory in 2020. However, not everybody agrees that it's a good measure. In fact, lots of voices have been raised in warning about using biofuels to reduce our dependence on oil. Nevertheless, the European Commission said on Monday that there is no intention to review such the 10 percent target. Barbara Helfferich, European Commissioner for Environmental Affairs, stated that even though the EC knows that biofuels are associated with "problems," the EC is developing legislation to guarantee their sustainability. Moreover, the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Environment said that Europe expects to assign 17 percent of available farmland for biofuels to reach the 10 percent goal. These acres wouldn't affect food production, he said. He also said that the some of the newest European Union members, such as Bulgaria, Bulgaria and Romania, could even help reduce this global percentage due to the...

New study quantifies differences in biofuel crops, impact on environment
2008-04-01 23:12:00 There are plenty of flex-fuel capable cars on the roads, but there is not nearly enough ethanol available to power all of them on the gasoline alternative. It's no secret that corn-based ethanol is not the answer to our oil woes, but if that's the case, what alternatives should we be looking closest at? Regular readers are surely aware that cellulosic ethanol is the way to go when it comes to alcohol-based fuels, but even with that process, a crop of some sort is required. Additionally, biodiesel offers plenty of advantages over petroleum-based diesel fuel, but an oil-rich crop is required for its creation as well. A new study from the University of Washington was commissioned to find the most desirable crops for biofuels which suggests that algae and fast-growing trees be considered as the cream-of-the-crop, so to speak."While some biofuels may be an improvement over traditional fuels, we believe we should focus much more on the biofuels of the future that can be developed in sma...

News: One tank of biofuel could feed one person for one year.
2008-03-06 21:13:00 To fuel our discussion about "The Global Food Crisis- A Perfect Storm", here is an interesting article about the efficiency of biofuel. Or rather the lack thereof:Corn is being diverted from human consumption, kicking off a domino effect of problems tied to food prices. It starts with ethanol produced from corn, which optimists hope will help solve the U.S. reliance on foreign oil, as well as provide a fuel that burns cleaner. "The U.S. is now using more corn for the production of ethanol than the entire [food] crop in Canada".And it is going to get bigger. In 2000, world production of ethanol totalled 20 billion litres. In 2007, world production climbed to 60 billion litres. In the month of January 2008 alone, six billion new litres of ethanol were produced in the United States. Scores of ethanol plants are under construction and as a result, it is predicted that the United States will produce 52 billion litres of the fuel in 2008.When all the plants are running, the United States ...

Deputy and former minister Antonio Palocci now supports a new international certification entity to guarantee the sustainable provenance of biofuels around the world.[Source: Diariohoy via Econoticias]
?Misleading? Saab TV biofuel ad yanked in UK

According to the UK's Advertising Standards Agency, Saab's "Release Me" commercial (watch it below the fold) incorrectly states that using bioethanol-capable cars reduces your carbon footprint. The ad said carbon is reduced thirty percent when you drive with bioethanol. Unfortunately for Saad, it's closer to carbon neutral if you measure from seed to tail pipe. California to Pump More E85 Biofuel
2008-02-26 10:53:00 Today, the Los Angeles Times reported that California is undertaking ambitious plans to curb greenhouse gas emissions by boosting access to alternative fuels, such as E85. E85 is a biofuel blend made from 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. E85 gets worse mileage than gasoline and generally costs more per gallon. This costly combination has made E85's adoption sluggish throughout the country. However, Californians are often environmentally-minded and some are willing to pay the extra price. read more in hotstocked.com
BIOFUEL: Thailand worries over food shortages amid palm oil debate
2008-02-26 00:37:00 Thailand has started requiring that all its diesel fuel include a component made from palm oil, a move that could reduce costly energy imports but is driving up prices for the commodity, experts say. From February 1, the kingdom began requiring that diesel vehicles run on a blend that includes two percent biodiesel, and is considering raising that to five percent within five years. The switch has sent prices for palm oil soaring, leading to shortages of the commodity that is widely used for domestic cooking and in the food industry.Palm oil is among the products for which prices are controlled by the government, but as prices have risen globally, traders stopped selling to stores or began ignoring the fixed price. That sounded alarm bells for producers and consumers, who urged the government to ban exports of palm oil and to adjust its price controls. Instead, the Commerce Ministry allowed a one-time import of 30,000 tonnes of palm oil to boost supplies until March, when production ...
