Join Your Chicago Chefs who Grow, Teach & Feed! by guest blogger : Aman
2009-11-20 18:09:00
A lot of what goes into being a chef is giving something back to others; usually it is in the obvious form of creating wonderful food for guests to enjoy. Another part, is giving back to our community and Chicago is one of the greatest communities out there.  There are so many opportunities to give back to the community throughout the year and many where chefs and restaurants take center stage to help support various causes. Some events that myself and Rockit Ranch executive chef James Gottwald and our entire crew have been a part of have been: Meals on Wheels Chicago (www.mealsonwheelschicago.org),- Grand Chefs Gala (www.grandchefsgala.com),  Taste of the Nation (www.strength.org/) as well as many events and classes supporting...

Debating The Big Ten Title: Ohio State and Iowa Collide... Blogger Style
2009-11-13 18:27:00
With the Big Ten game of the year right around the corner, two die hard fans got together to debate the merits of their two teams. Bret Feddern, a self-admitted Hawkeye Nerd on IowaHawkeyes.net and Bleacher Report Iowa Featured Columnist, will argue for the Hawkeyes. Following Bret's tweets during an Iowa game is fun... give it a shot. I will be arguing for the Buckeyes (as if they need the help.)The Hawkeyes and Buckeyes take the field on Saturday and the winner will be off to the Rose Bowl. We can't match that drama here, but we'll give it a shot....

Guest Blogger: Solidarity Rally on National Coming Out Day
2009-10-12 19:20:00
While I was scheduled to be in Washington DC for the National Equality March, I was concerned about covering the Solidarity Rally that was set for Daley Plaza on the same day.  I asked my friend Valerie Burns if she would be interested in being the first ever "What's A Boy To Do Guest Blogger" and share her feelings and thoughs from the days events.  My thanks go out to Valerie for sharing her words with us. Photo Credit: Valerie Burns I spent my Sunday afternoon at the Chicago Rally of the National Equality March in Daley Plaza , put together by LGBT Change, on October 11th.  The rally, which attracted a small crowd compared to November's Prop 8 rally,...

A Blogger Keeps a Camera Eye on John Carlson
2009-09-23 04:30:00
It seems to me that people who attend a season's very first home exhibition game, on a Monday night, necessarily rank among those who most missed hockey over the summer. I was struck not only by the overall volume attending Monday night's 2-1 Caps' loss to Buffalo -- the crowd was demonstrably larger than those of a good many regular season games in 2005-06 -- but how many on a warm muggy night wore their red sweaters. Yes the Caps are the hot sports ticket in town these days, but it seemed to me that last night there was a palpable urgency on the part of a hungry fan base to be seen on Metro and in Chinatown reaffirming, showcasing an allegiance of which they're distinctly proud.* * * * *I'm not sure this should pass without comment: the Washington Times on Tuesday ran a front-page color photo of the Caps'-Sabres' game in a box announcing the score . . . of an exhibition game . . .on the front page. I mean, that's the stuff you'd expect of a print daily in T...

So Sayeth This Blogger: First Line's Set
2009-09-17 12:35:00
If only Jim Zorn had this kind of offense. Coach Boudreau called out his top line of Ovi-Backstrom-Knuble, somewhat, after Tuesday's Duchesne Cup scrimmage, and on Wednesday the trio apparently got wind of the middling review. The line spent much of Wednesday's scrimmage toying with the opposition, playing keep-away with the puck and more or less humiliating a largely undefended Semyon Varlamov, to the tune of 9-5. The 'A'ces went up 3-0 in a dominant first frame, with tallies from Joel Broda, Kyle Wilson, and Brandon Sugden, the latter Hershey's designated enforcer this season who cleaned up a rebound off of Broda's pipe-pinging. (Broda had a strong scrimmage.)Team 'B' briefly made a rally of it in the second stanza, scoring the first two tallies: Patrick McNeill (a nice camp thus far) and Brendan Morrison. But he 'A'ces went wild thereafter -- Wilson and Oskar Osala (a real solid showing from the big Finn on Wednesday) made it 5-2, and the rout was on. Only an Alexander ...

Stupid Dinosaur Lies .org has returned!
2009-09-10 07:48:00
I had to make it return due to finding a lot of links referring to stupiddinosaurlies.org. To be honest, I wanted to use stupiddinosaurlies.org domain for this blog, but unfortunately Blogger won't let me do that. So I have to setup a blog from a Free WordPress Hosting site which mirrors the blogger version which is this site and mapped the .org domain to that site. Now my .org site is back up and running again. I have 2 blogs mirroring each other. In the event of the wordpress site undergoing downtime, the blogger version will be opened and available for everyone to come by and browse and vice versa, thus I won't lose my readers like I have been doing every time I set up a blog on any hosting site I came across. So whichever you choose, you're more than welcome to either stay and browse this site or head over to the .org version of this site I entitled Stupid Dinosaur Lies .org and visit there. You're choice.
Embrace the Suck
2009-09-09 10:01:00
"Over the course of 10 months in eastern Afghanistan, an Army specialist nicknamed Mud Puppy maintained a blog irreverently chronicling life at the front, from the terror of roadside bombs to the tyrannies of master sergeants.Often funny and always profane, the blog, Embrace the Suck (military slang for making the best of a bad situation), flies under the Army?s radar. Not officially approved, it is hidden behind a password-protected wall because the reservist does not want his superiors censoring it."?What comes out of my blog is the experiences of a soldier right in the middle of all of this,? Mud Puppy (a nickname for military police), who recently returned home to Illinois, wrote in a recent e-mail message. ?I think that people need to hear from us, more than they need to hear from the big whigs. War has a cost, and that cost is paid by soldiers.?Read the story of Pentagon Wary Blog Watch by at NY Times

Much Easier to be a Blogger in Opposition
2009-08-25 23:14:00
One of the things I’ve discovered contrasting the past seven months to my first four years blogging is that it’s much easier to blog in opposition to the party in power than in support of the incumbent Administration (especially when you’re a small government-type defending a President named Bush). Simply put, political leaders don’t live up ...

China Guest Blogger Sought. Must Read AND Understand WTO Rulings.
2009-08-13 07:38:00
Got an email today from a leading finance magazine asking me whether the World Trade Organization's (WTO) ruling today "against" China meant "piracy is now dead in China." I told him I would review it, figure out the answer to his question, then call him. WRONG. I read a few news articles on the ruling and they all said pretty much the same thing. They said the US won on some items and China won on others. They then proceeded to quote someone from some film organization stating this was a huge victory for US film companies and that was pretty much it. So I went to the WTO site and read the "findings and conclusions." and understood pretty much none of it. There were so many cites to various WTO provisions that I realized to understand the ruling would probably take days (I am not kidding) of review and analysis. I briefly checked out the full decision, but that is 491 pages. Hell, if I am going to read 491 pages without billing for it, I am going to read An Evil Cradling, ...

"Lecker"-Blogger-Treffen in Hamburg
2009-08-04 11:10:00
