What's Monique Bond Hiding -- And Who Cares?
2009-12-10 19:26:00
The Reader's Michael Miner goes after Monique Bond in this story sent to me by an eagle-eyed reader (thanks!).  I'm glad Minder wrote the piece.  But it's frustrating that he  doesn't come away with all that much by way of vivid instances (and spends so much time comparing Bond to sweet-talking Peter Cunningham).  Hubermand doesn't give out his email or cell phone number. There's no org chart.  Some report isn't online.  Principals are scared to talk. But there are much better examples, and readers would probably be more interested if the complaining journalists had been willing to give THEIR names. (No beat reported did.) Man up.  Cover the stonewalling.  Stop covering things that are being spoon-fed.  Access is over-rated. ...

We believe in supporting our kids in anything they want to try, as log as it's a healthy/positive activity, why not. This past Summer while we were at the Gurnee 4th of July parade and Little Miss Gurnee went past in a car, our daughter looked up at us and said, " I want to do that dad, I want to ride in a fancy car and be in a parade.""No harm no foul," is what I thought.  We explained to her that she had to enter a pageant to be able to do have the chance to be Little Miss Gurnee, and that pageants were a lot of work.  She didn't care, and after some research, we found out that...
Debt bets: Top picks in bond funds
2009-09-16 06:00:00
"There is never really a time to stop thinking about risk management and proper portfolio structure," says Keith Fitz-Gerald. In Money Map Reporter, he eyes a trio of bond funds."Among the more conservative positions we call our 'base builders' is Nuveen Quality Income Municipal Fund (NYSE: NQU). "This fund’s ability to demonstrate stability by continually delivering equal or increasing dividend payments through the current global economic mess is why we have it in our portfolio. It’s trading at a 1.98% discount to NAV and is currently yielding 6.10%. Another base-builder is PIMCO Strategic Global Government Fund (NYSE: RCS).  Diversification doesn’t just mean having several different stocks in your portfolio. It also means looking at different asset classes and different geographic regions. "And that’s exactly what RCS provides us. RCS is a bond fund of international holdings from Mortgage-backed secu...
A trio of muni bond funds
2009-07-16 14:00:00
"Think munis are a risky deal?" asks income expert Neil George. In his Stocks that Pay You, he states, "Don't. Instead, buy them now." However, rather than buying individual bonds, the advisor suggests that investors focus on buying closed-end muni bond funds. Here, he looks at a trio of favorites."The muni market isn't for the uninformed or the novice. Unlike the treasury market and much of the corporate market - when it comes to munis - you have to know each bond inside and out before you buy, and keep tabs on it after you buy."Everything - from visible supply, calls, sinking funds, and underlying backing and assets, to who is trading them - comes into play. I know - I've traded them professionally. This is why I like the closed end funds."I continue to recommend three very specific closed-end muni funds that have proven out to pay and perform: they are the AllianceBerstein National Muni Income (NYSE: AFB), the Nuveen Quality Inc...

Plus, James Bond shouldn't drink so much.
2009-06-12 13:35:00
Two things bug me about spy movies.First: WHY ON EARTH would a spy need to excel at everything and draw attention to himself? When James Bond goes and dances a tango and then plays that video game against the host and has EVERYONE in the room looking at him, doesn't that blow his mission?Second: CELL PHONES DON'T WORK THAT WAY, Jason Bourne. In the movies, spies need to make a call and not be traced, so they walk up a mall kiosk and buy a prepaid cell phone, tear it open, and start calling. Have you ever actually SEEN someone use these, though? Not only does it take roughly three hours for the bored college kid to ring up your order, and not only do you have to use a machete to open that package, but then you have to put in the battery, charge the phone, program the little card, and probably log online to start up your account. The Boy got himself a prepaid cell phone and it was TWO DAYS before he could use it, and then he's always going to get new cards to "re-up" his min...

Senator Kit Bond Weekly Republican Address 05/09/09 VIDEO TEXT
2009-05-09 22:23:00
Full Text Transcript:?This is Missouri Senator Kit Bond.?As the senior Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, I understand that protecting the American people is the government?s highest priority and most important responsibility.?And keeping our nation safe should not be a political issue, it?s an American one.?I hope my colleagues in Congress keep that in mind over the next couple of weeks as we debate the troop funding bill.?Guantanamo Bay ? known as GITMO ? doesn?t house middle-of-the-road, white-collar criminals.?Instead, this detainee facility houses deadly terrorists, including 9-11-mastermind Khalid Sheihk Mohammed.?While President Obama has no plan for what to do with these killers, he has pledged to close the terrorist-detention facility in January to fulfill a campaign promise.?This is a dangerous case of putting symbolism over security.?Or as I like to say ? this is a classic example of a ?READY, FIRE, AIM? strategy.?When it comes to national security decisions...

"We see some opportunity in investment-grade bonds as well as in junk bond," says Nilus Mattive, who adds, "In his Dividend Superstars, he looks at two income funds from Vanguard."The concern about investment grade bonds -- debt carrying ratings of BBB or higher from S&P and Baa or higher from Moody’s -- is that an all-out Armageddon scenario will punish all companies, even the very strongest. "With some forecasts calling for more defaults in 2009 than we saw during the height of the Great Depression, I can see why! "At the same time, when I survey the landscape, I see some decent risk-reward scenarios. For example, I am an unabashed fan of Vanguard’s low-cost funds, and when I look at the Vanguard Intermediate-Term Investment Grade Bond Fund (VFICX), I am intrigued. "At the end of February, 22.6% of the fund’s holdings held the highest rating of Aaa! Another 50% had at least one ‘A’ in their rating. &quo...

Those looking for a core bond fund won't find a better choice.""Few bond funds have a track record that can rival that of Pimco Total Return, especially during 2008, when the fund was up 4.3% while all other competitors were in the red. The fund has a 5-star rating from Morningstar."Pimco's investment strategy is simple: focus on high-quality, intermediate-term fixed-income securities, including inves...

Favoring junk: A Trio of high yield bond ETFs

Unless you foresee a lengthy period of deflation coming up (and I don't, despite the latest U.S. CPI numbers) then Treasuries aren't the long-term answer."In the recent b...

No Mr. Bond, I Expect You To Fly (In A Car I Stole From TV's Rob Petrie)
2009-01-04 02:11:00
Now you may have realized the title above is the bastardized version of a great James Bond quote, but you probably have no idea why I stooped so low. That's what I will be spending the rest of this 'essay' explaining. I should first preface all of this by stating that I am a simple person, a simple minded person to be more exact. But lest you confuse my simple mindedness for stupidity, let me remind you that I came up with the idea (after a little inspiration from my Facebook and real life friend Beau) of one of this year's soon to be biggest clothing fads ? The GoodHood®. It's an attachable jacket or sweater hood that is waterproof and lined with my new eco-friendly multi-fiber blend called Flaneece, which is a wonderful flannel/fleece blend. (GoodHood® - Because if you aren't keeping your head warm, you might as well be naked) See, no simple minded idiot could come up with that. Right? Wait, let me rephrase that. I mean: NO, a simple minded idiot could NEVER come up with tha...

Dr. No (James Bond) [Blu-ray] (1962)
2008-11-30 00:18:00
Released in 1962, this first James Bond movie remains one of the best, and serves as an entertaining reminder that the Bond series began (in keeping with Ian Fleming's novels) with a surprising lack of gadgetry and big-budget fireworks. Sean Connery was just 32 years old when he won the role of Agent 007. In his first adventure James Bond is called to Jamaica where a colleague and secretary have been mysteriously killed. With an American CIA agent (Jack Lord, pre-Hawaii Five-O), they discover that the nefarious Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) is scheming to blackmail the U.S. government with a device capable of deflecting and destroying U.S. rockets launched from Cape Canaveral. Of course, Bond takes time off from his exploits to enjoy the company of a few gorgeous women, including the bikini-clad Ursula Andress. She gloriously kicks off the long-standing tradition of Bond women who know how to please their favorite secret agent. A sexist anachronism? Maybe, but this is Bond at his purest,...

The "I Just Saw A James Bond Movie And It Reminded Me Of This Repost" Repos
2008-11-14 07:58:00
Ok, I just saw the new James Bond movie and it got me all excited (that's what she said) and reminded me of this 2 year old post. Perhaps what I remember most about it is that it took longer to make the little graphic there than it did to write this...and it shows, but I'm ok with that because I like to settle. It keeps expectations down, like 'Dow Jones plunging' down. So, as I go back to punch this up so it's not so 2006, please keep in mind that I am doing so at 2:30AM and long ago surrendered my faculites and better judgement...I joked last week (OK, 2 years ago for those scoring at home) about wanting to do a story based on a radio commercial I heard about the fact that the CIA is hiring, but I was too afraid of Big Brother. They're like HR only with weapons and wiretapping, though unlike my HR, they probably let you surf the web. Although I'm sure it's in the name of National Security, which really isn't a good name. I prefer something more traditional like Dale o...
