BLACK AND WHITE PEOPLE FURNITURE
2012-05-23 18:24:00
Although we're not exactly sure about the case of race relations down in the American state of North Carolina, the following commercial for The Red House Furniture Store certainly raises our brows. If the jingle alone doesn't blow your mind, just wait until it gets to "black" or "white" furniture. And to think--all this time and historical tension--and racism will ultimately end with the purchase of a brand-new couch or bed. Epic!
Service To See Who Googled You: Personal Branding Or Heights Of Narcissism?
2012-05-14 14:16:00
First we had Search Engine Optimization, a series of steps to be undertaken to ensure that your content is available on the holy grail that is the first page of a Google Search Result. Then we came across Online Reputation Management, a way for brands to monitor what is being said about them and to reach out to customers. Both are used by almost every enterprise who has an online division. Now, in a step further, it seems that people have begun treating themselves as brands, and curating their Online Persona. With the advent of Facebook and almost everyone being on it, people have begun to be more careful of what they say online. Nowadays, it is a known practise for employers to perform online searches of potential or current employees. These searches are very thorough and often can throw up unpleasant or forgettable instances in an employee’s life. According to a 2009 study, almost 70% of U.S. hiring managers said they had rejected a candidate based on what they found in h...

FROM MARCY TO FACEBOOK
2012-04-26 18:24:00
Pop icon, Jay-Z, is back at it with another digital deal, this time it's with Facebook and the beta release of his game app, Empire. Loosely based on the rapper's humble beginnings and rise to fame, the RPG-style franchise allows players to make their own "come up" via decisions involving music, family and money. Add another notch to the Brooklyn mogul's belt. He's competing with Super Mario now!
SNOOP DOGG SMOKABLE BOOK
2012-04-20 06:42:00
Yes, its 4/20 and yes, we do have stoner readers. Or maybe just a handful of "creatives" that pull a few in between brainstorm sessions? That being said, here's a sweet branding move from none other than "King Stoner" himself, Snoop Dogg. It comes in the form of a book. Rolling Words are a series of lyric-ridden, hemp-covered, pages that double as rolling paper for your "tobacco." Oh and did we forget to mention the matchstick striker binder? Thank San Francisco-based agency Pereira & O'Dell, the crew that created the book as promotional strategy for Snoop Dogg Kingsize Slim Rolling Papers.

DISNEY'S WATERMELON PRINCESS?
2012-03-08 18:26:00
Disney's got a rather peculiar way of categorizing their candy princesses. For their "Dig 'n Dip" candy series, Tiana, the animation giant's only black princess, is placed on the watermelon flavor pack while Sleeping Beauty is on the vanilla. Not sure how much social, racial, or maybe just marketing implications this has, but it does raise some brows. Thoughts?

The intended purpose of the new look will allow the letters to fit into distinctive character branding like the Green Lantern's glow, for example. We dig it!

China Marketing And Branding. Reading The Tea Leaves.
2009-09-20 22:08:00
The DragonBeat blog has a great post, entitled, "Why foreigners are beating China’s tea-makers on their home turf." The post is on why China has none of the leading tea brands worldwide, but what it says pretty much applies across the board to Chinese branding in general. The comments are interesting as well, with many of them complaining about how bad Lipton tea is and how the Lipton market is completely different from the market for Chinese tea. Wrong. If anything, Lipton is a classic example of great branding and of how a Western company has managed to take a ho-hum product (in this case, Lipton tea) and market it in such a way as to trump the market. When will there be a Chinese Lipton and who will that be?

ASE09 Meet Market Observations
2009-08-21 20:00:00
Guest Post by Dominic Fawver. During Affiliate Summit I visited both the Meet Market and the exposition hall to see the booths.  I was impressed at how good some of the booths and tables were, and also at how bad some were.  If I could recognize they were bad as a first time attendee, they must have stood out to veterans.  Here are some general comments based upon my experiences. Have a banner behind the table, giving your name and hopefully an idea of what you are (network, merchant, etc.) Have a give away: this is something that will make people remember you later.  It is even better if it ties in with your company name, slogan, or something of that nature.  It never hurts to be unique. Have people at the booth (I would have assumed that was obvious). Be friendly (again, obvious). Don’t have several people working the crowd and handing out stuff (I got asked if I wanted Perfect English at least 10 times) and no one at the table. If you have a giveaway or are doing a contest...

5 Tips for Integrating Technology and Branding
2009-06-03 13:10:00
This week?s Quirk newsletter topic is ?Branding in the Digital Age.? If you ask me, this sounds like one of those classic phraseologies that enthusiastic marketing geeks types scatter about wherever they go. In other words: codswallop. Despite how it may sound however, this term is not an entirely meaningless utterance ? it relates to creating, protecting and promoting your corporate identity; a vital component of any company?s reputation and a crucial factor in securing a competitive advantage.
Branding in the Digital Age
2009-06-02 10:43:00
If this title makes you feel like you?ve just won a game of Jargon Bingo, you are not alone. Us Web types are quick to latch on to names for things ? Web 2.0 (and 3.0), LAS, ?The Online Conversation? ? and it?s easy to talk about a concept without really thinking about what it means. Most people, by now, understand that a brand is a sum of perceptions; what do you, your staff, your business partners and your customers think about you and what collective meaning is then ascribed. So, when you apply this to the digital or information age, what exactly are we talking about? I sought out the perspectives of people smarter than me ? Mr. Academic guy, Dave Duarte and Mr. Cutting Edge Branding Stuff guy, Matt Riley. Dave teaches at the UCT Graduate School of Business and founded Huddlemind ? a community of online learning. Matt is the guy behind Idea Bounty, our innovative crowdsourcing platform and is also a senior planner here at Quirk.
