Broadband Internet A Legal Right In Finland – When Will India Have On
2009-10-20 09:33:00 (With inputs by Abhishek Kapoor) In the era of stringent Tweeting bans compared to performance drug tests, this news will not come as a shock to many. An unshakable belief in something without need for a proof or evidence could be the importance of internet in each one’s life today. With India working up their internet penetration in the rural areas, it would achieve 20 million broadband users by 2010. Now we are at the end of 2009 and the TRAI latest numbers suggest that broadband penetration in India has just about managed to reach 6.8 million subscribers. Even countries of the European Union seem to be deeming high-speed internet as a vital human right. Recently in news, Finland legally mandated fast internet access to all it’s citizens and is the first to do so. Even the United Nations have okayed this particular move, where a universal service should be every citizen’s right. The minimum mandatory speed in Finland currently needs to be 1 megabit per second, b...

Broadband Still Lacking in the U.S.!
2009-10-19 14:20:00 I have to admit, my Comcast cable DSL is pretty darn fast, fast enough for me to get things done but it’s never fast enough as the fiber-optic networked 300Mbps that virtually every household in South Korea is getting. Every year, I talk to one of my friends in South Korea. 3 years ago, I asked ...

Broadband tax ‘to be made law’
2009-09-23 15:01:00 A broadband tax, which will see everyone with a fixed telephone line paying 50p extra a month, "will be law before the next election". This is according to the Stephen Timms, the Minister for Digital Britain. Speaking at a debate in London, Mr Timms said the tax will be presented to parliament as part of the Finance Bill. But the Tory MP John Whittingdale said the tax, which could raise up to £175m a year to fund high speed networks, would be opposed by the Conservatives. "I’m confident the Conservative party will oppose it. I object to it on the basis that it is another tax and is aimed at people who are using old technology," said Mr Whittingdale, who is also chair of the DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) select committee. Speaking at a debate organised by BCS (The British Computer Society), Mr Timms reiterated the government’s commitment to the levy and the other recommendations of Lord Carter’s Digital Britain report. ...

20 Million Broadband Users Will Take 5 Years While Govt Approves Broadband
2009-09-15 08:04:00 The Broadband Policy of 2004 stated that India would achieve 20 million broadband users by 2010. Now we are at the end of 2009 (almost) and the TRAI latest numbers suggest that broadband penetration in India has just about managed to reach 6.8 million subscribers! At this rate the target of 20 million broadband subscribers would be reached by 2014 so said Mr Manoj Kohli,Chairman, CII National Committee on Telecom and Broadband and CEO and Joint Managing Director of Bharti AirTel Ltd. Inspite of this slow growth the CII is aiming for 214 million connections by 2014 i.e. in the next 5 years. A tall ask if you ask us. The wire line infrastructure in India is certainly not equipped to provide this growth. What may give it the impetus is the upcoming wimax auctions which may lead to India being connected via Wimax. We have reported earlier on how 20% of the worlds wimax internet connections might be in India by 2012 and that could be the way broadband penetration could grow. There are a...

MTNL Joins In Broadband Price War – Now Offers Double Speeds At Same
2009-08-18 12:14:00 It seems Indian broadband scenario is finally headed for a rigid price war. MTNL has announced doubling of speeds for existing users in Mumbai circle at no extra cost. The slashed prices constitutes more than 40 percent reduction as now subscribers can get 512 kbps connection only for Rs.999 against earlier tariff of Rs.1599 a month. Airtel just recently took a 40 percent reduction in broadband prices and currently offers 512 kbps unlimited connection at Rs 1,099 a month . It has approximately 1 million subscriber in telemedia segment with Average ARPU of Rs.1000 per subscriber. MTNL would be upgrading current speeds of 256 kbps to 512 kbps and will also upgrade the speed of 512Kbps, 1Mbps and 2Mbps users to 1Mbps, 2Mbps, 4Mbps respectively without any extra cost. MTNL move is clearly to negate the impact of price reduction taken in by other broadband players like You Tele, Sify and Airtel. The move is also precursor to TRAIâs recommendation to redefine broadband ...

Airtel Slashes Broadband Tariff By 40 per cent, Also Offers Freebies
2009-07-28 13:17:00 Bharti Airtel seems to have taken cues from its results and has thus decided to focus more on its telemedia customers. WATBlog earlier predicted the future focus area - the telemedia services like broadband and DTH would see renewed focus and could do wonder for the telecom giant. Mr K. Srinivas, Joint President, Telemedia Services, Bharti Airtel, told Business Line, âOur internal survey has revealed that subscribers are using more and more bandwidth. From just an average usage of 4Gb a month, broadband users are now using up to 8 Gb. Clearly this kind of usage needs higher speed. The reduction in tariffs is to present âtrue and richâ broadband experience by making high speed broadband more affordable and offering VAS content on broadband that enriches the customerâs experience.â Bharti Airtel currently has a million broadband users and its Telemedia division logged revenues of Rs.856 crores in June quarter. The ARPU was in excess of Rs.1000 per subscriber. De...

TRAI Says, “Minimum Broadband Speed = 2 MBPS”
2009-07-24 13:03:00 Inaccessibility to fast internet is probably the greatest problem faced by Indians. Cheap, easily accessible, fast Internet connections are a rarity in India. An associate of mine was boasting how he had downloaded around 200 GB in 4 days, all due to Wi-Fi and a dedicated internet connection of 16Mbps. This was in the USA. Here, in India, most regular users scarcely get more than a 2Mbps connection. Hence, this ruling comes like a breath of fresh air. The Hindu Business Line published this : The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today indicated that the Government should redefine broadband services making it mandatory for operators to offer at least 2Mbps speeds. As of now, broadband speeds are still defined from 256kbps onwards. A look at MTNL’s tariff plans will show you how companies like MNTL have no major dreams of taking it further. The government has acknowledged the need for broadband, and has emphasized on the importance it has in “inclusive growth&r...

Tata Indicom Launches Photon+ in Delhi - A Look At Wireless Broadband Oppor
2009-06-25 06:32:00 Tata Indicom seems to be on the path to change the broadband scenario in India as it has launched photon+ in Delhi. Tata is treading carefully by launching the photon+ service in a phased manner as earlier it was launched in Chennai, Mumbai and some other cities. The Photon+ service claims to be 20 time faster than the existing wireless data card connections, and approximately 10 times than the availability of average broadband connection speed in the country. The service is said to be offering a speed of 3.1 mbps and many other wireless internet operators have already started to match its speed. The plan charges are a tad heavy for normal users as it involves one-time installation charge of Rs.3500. The plans however ranges between Rs.299 to Rs.1250 per month. The company currently provides photon+ internet connection by two technologies-USB modem and Router. The Router is capable of enabling simultaneous Internet use by multiple computers unlike the restriction imposed by other IS...

Using multiple broadband links from one system
2009-06-20 02:30:00 This is a piece I wrote a while back and lost when my hard drive died. Just found it again in one of the backups These days, it's not uncommon to have multiple ways to access the Internet. It is quite likely that you have a home DSL connection and another wireless connection via your mobile device, albeit a lot slower than the DSL. But if you're anything like me, you had better keep a backup connection or two. Until the recent disaster that wiped out most of my devices, I had DSL (from PTCL), a fiber-to-the-home connection (Nayatel) and a trial WiMax one (from Wi-Tribe that I'll soon have to start paying for), all without any limits on how much I could download (at least after 8pm). (I wrote the above part right after the burnout, but things have fully recovered since then) The simple way to deal with that is to maybe use your laptop with one link and your PC with the other (assuming you have more than one system). However, there's another, geekier way which I discovered afte...

Why net neutrality regulation would undercut Universal Broadband progress
2009-01-23 14:06:00 -By Scott Cleland The start of robust broadband deployment in the U.S. was delayed for several years in the late 1990’s because of regulatory uncertainty over whether broadband investment could earn a competitive return. House Approves Financing for Rural American Broadband Network
2009-01-19 20:51:00 Source: MarketingVoxThe House Appropriations Committee just approved financing up to $6 billion to develop broadband networks in rural America."For every dollar invested in broadband, the economy sees a 10-fold return on that investment," the Committee preached. The $6 billion-for-broadband is part of an $825 billion stimulus package that was posed to Congress.Advocates for the bill remain cautiously celebratory."Let's make sure the details are right," said Policy Director Ben Scott of Free Press. "You want to spend money on networks that aren't obsolete by the time you build them."Policy-makers were admonished to ensure the new networks are fast, affordable and compliant with net neutrality principles (which posit that internet should not be terraced or filtered, especially based on the interests of a broadband company or advocates for morality)."Tax dollars should not be used to fund closed, proprietary networks that shut out content providers, control consumer behavior, and enco...

BBC Rolls Out AIR iPlayer, Ditches Kontiki P2P, Proposes Tiered Broadband S
2008-12-23 12:00:00 The BBC has just rolled out a new desktop version of its popular iPlayer service based on Adobeâs AIR platform. The new client is available for UK residents as part of the BBC iPlayer Labs beta test, and it will be released to the public some time next year. BBCâs iPlayer client previously only offered downloadable content for Windows PCs. The new client will also be available for Mac and Linux users. The launch of the new client is a big blow for the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based content delivery service startup Kontiki, whose P2P technology powered previous iPlayer versions. Beep Online media exec Anthony Rose cited falling broadband prices as a reason to shift away from P2P. But the move could also be part of a new approach to appease local ISPs that are increasingly voicing concerns about the growing iPlayer bandwidth footprint. The original incarnation of the BBCâs iPlayer was based on a combination of Windows Media DRM and Kontikiâs P2P delivery technology. However, the br...

High speed broadband will create energy bottleneck and slow Internet
2008-12-07 20:38:00 "Increased services like Video on Demand will put pressure on the system and create an energy bottleneck," said Dr Kerry Hinton of the University's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the ARC Special Centre for Ultra-Broadband Information Networks (CUBIN).In a world-first model of internet power consumption, University of Melbourne researchers have been able to identify the major contributors to Internet power consumption as the take-up of broadband services grows in the coming years."It has now become clear that the exponential growth of the Internet is not sustainable, "said Dr Hinton. The result indicates that, even with the improvements in energy efficiency of electronics, the power consumption of the Internet will increase from 0.5% of today's national electricity consumption to 1% by around 2020.Dr Hinton says the growth of the Internet, IT broadband telecommunications will provide a wide range of new products and services.New home services include Video o...

Broadband factors into real estate decisions
2008-11-13 02:37:00 Source: SFGate.comBy Peter SvenssonAdam and Anita Paulk had a nice home outside Temple, Texas, with a big yard and a 10-minute commute to his job. But in Internet terms, the house was on Slow Lane. There was no high-speed Internet connection available. So the Paulks pulled up stakes in 2005 and built a home in a new subdivision. It was a little farther from his job, but at least it could get broadband."It was worth it," Anita Paulk said, not to hear her husband gripe about the connection anymore. In less than a decade, broadband has gone from a luxury to a must for many people, and for some of them, it has started to influence their real estate decisions. Homes that have broadband are winning out over more-remote ones that don't. Areas with better and faster broadband are becoming more desirable than ones with slower access.Edward Redpath, a real estate broker in Hanover, N.H., said he has seen deals fall through once the buyer realizes a home doesn't get broadband.
