2011-10-11 10:59:00 Yesterday, Kapil Sibal, Minister for Telecommunications and IT released the draft of the National Telecommunications Policy – 2011. In it are some lofty aims. This too is aimed to be allowed. Mr. Kapil Sibal said, “We will seek TRAI recommendations on license framework under the new Telecom Policy 2011. Qualcomm To Lose Broadband License And 1 Billion Auction Dollars
2011-09-22 13:10:00 US-based chipmaker Qualcomm may not get wireless broadband service permits in India as the telecom department has deemed its application to be invalid. The company was the sole technology firm to win wireless broadband airwaves (BWA) in the June 2010 auction and had shelled out Rs 4,913 crore for permits in Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala. After scrutinizing its application, the DoT concluded that it was beyond the validity period for applying and acquiring the relevant licence. An official at DoT said that Qualcomm has been informed over the weekend that its application has been rejected. The cancellation of permits will result in Qualcomm forfeiting nearly Rs 5,000 crore it had paid for its permits. But, a final decision on this amount will be taken only after evaluating the company’s response. Biggest Investor in India The chipmaker also said it had invested $1 billion in India, one of the largest investments made by it so far outside the US. “Since we have followe...

Wireless Broadband Penetration can Unleash $80 billion GDP Growth
2011-08-12 11:30:00 GSMA, the association of mobile phone operators in the country, believe a 10-per cent growth in mobile broadband will add Rs3,50,600 crore ($80 billion) to India’s GDP by 2015. Analysys Mason has prepared this report for GSMA to assess the direct and indirect economic impact of wireless broadband in India. The exclusive findings of the Analysys Mason report reveal that allocating just 5MHz of additional 3G spectrum per licensee could increase mobile broadband penetration by more than 35%, which would increase the number of 3G users to almost 160 million by 2015. This would also increase national broadband penetration by 3.3%, resulting in an INR538 billion increase to India’s GDP by 2015. By this time, mobile broadband could contribute a total of INR2190 billion to the Indian economy. India lags fellow Emerging BRIC Peers due to a weak infrastructure base for wireline based broadband deployment. This is due to various reasons like lack of adequate investment, excessive bureaucr...

In 4 Years Broadband = 2 Mbps+ Speed In India
2011-08-04 11:21:00 If you are the type who accesses internet via broadband connection but gets frustrated because of sluggish speed then this news might cheer you up. The Indian government has accepted TRAI recommendations in the National Broadband Plan with regard to speed of broadband Internet. Its is stated that the definition of a broadband connection as 512 Kbps (Kilo bits per second) is to be revised to 2 Mbps from January 2015. Which means that from January 1, 2015, the stipulated download speed for any broadband connection, either wireline or wireless, will be 2 Mbps. So while this doesn’t necessarily mean that suddenly broadband would mushroom everywhere it does mean that the telecom companies wont be able to peddle slower connections in the name of broadband and the general internet experience will definitely improve. Currently the country has 11.89M Broadband Users as per TRAI. The broadband penetration grew at an an annual growth rate of 35.49 per cent since last year and if it cont...

India In Top 3 For Broadband Growth – Will It Be Via TV Or Mobile?
2011-03-28 10:44:00 India added more than 2.5 million new lines of broadband last year and now stands at No13 in the world. Just 6 years ago it was barely in the top 50 of broadband countries. In terms of growth India is just behind China and US when it comes to broadband. These are good signs for the Indian broadband scene but one has to keep in mind that this growth has taken some time coming. Also the total base of broadband users in India is still small and hence the % growth on that small base might be comparable to others. “There has been tremendous and consistent growth in broadband across India in recent years, yet this is just the tip of the iceberg. Both fixed and wireless broadband options abound, and the Broadband Forum is doing all it can to help India’s providers engineer smarter and faster networks,” said Mr Robin Mersh, CEO BroadBand Forum. The key to India’s growth have been the wireless broadband options and the usb sticks by telecom operators that seem to...

DoT To Invite Bids For Rural Broadband
2010-11-24 08:15:00 India’s technological growth story will remain incomplete unless the necessary steps are taken to ensure that it is inclusive. Rural areas in the country have to see connectivity – at least virtual – on the same lines as urban centres. In 2004, when the Department of Telecommunications announced the Broadband policy it set itself the lofty target of having a 20 million subscriber base for broadband. As of October 2010, India had 10 million which is only half that number. Wireless broadband was expected to be a major part of this revolution. But due to the incessant delays – first with the auctions and then with the rollout -wireless connectivity is yet to come to the party. In an earlier post we highlighted that since India’s telecommunication policy is not based on Network Neutrality, the onus is on the telecom operator to develop infrastructure. We also debated their willingness to do so given the heavy costs involved. Now, it seems as if the Departm...

Bharti Airtel currently has 3.1 million fixed-line telephone subscribers out of which 1.3 million have broadband connection. With this move, are Airtel trying to convert the remaining subscribers? Does fixed-line broadband have enough potential? Airtel says According to Airtel, three years ago the revenue from voice alone was 80% for fixed line broadband subscribers. However, the number has now changed to 50-50 between voice and data, and this number is rising increasingly in favor of the latter. Airtel believes that this transition is happening due to the increased speeds that fixed line broadband users can achieve today. From almost 95% subscribers getting a speed of less than 256 kbps a few years ago, today no subscriber gets a speed of below 512 kbps and this has ...

National Broadband Plan: India Collaborates With US
2010-06-01 09:48:00 With the Broadband Wireless auction already in full swing, India will very soon be all set to boost its broadband outreach and capabilities. In view of this Trai (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ) is expected to come out with a consultation paper on a broadband policy for India within a week. Discussions and talks will mainly happen through the ICT joint working group which is under the US Social Forum. This collaboration with US comes at an opportune time because US has also recently released its ambitious National Broadband Plan in March and faces a broadband deficit currently. “We can share the ideas on priorities and cost-effective methods with India,” said Mr. Genachowski. Day 1 – Broadband Wireless Bids Reach Rs.2,353 crore
2010-05-25 07:18:00 The auction for broadband wireless access (BWA) began yesterday with the bids moving up by 34.4% on day 1 itself. The base price of the BWA auction was at Rs.1,750 crore which moved up to Rs 2,353 crore. There are 11 biddes for two slots of 20 Mhz each. This means that this auction might go on for a longer time than the 3G auctions which had 9 bidders for 3 slots. The bidders include Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar, Tata Communications, Reliance Communications and Idea Cellular, Qualcomm and Augere, from France. Similarity With 3G auctions The affinity towards metro circles is a similarity between bids in the BWA when compared to the 3G auction. So while Delhi, Mumbai, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat reached Rs 232 crore compared to the initial base price of Rs 160 crore there was little interest in category C circles such as Orissa, Assam and North East. Hi-Speed Broadband In Indian Villages – Dream Or Reality Soon?
2010-04-26 10:48:00 Politicians make promises and thats their job. But this one time I hope that the promise made by Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot at a recent media briefing turns out to be worth its words. Sachin has promised that Indian villages could see hi speed broadband very very soon. India is a diverse country and we have discussed how bridging the digital divide is one of the biggest problems it faces. There have been innovative solutions in terms of mobile apps for farmers which is powered by reuters. But the main issue still remains the broadband penetration in Indian villages which could solves issues of communication, education and several others that prohibit the growth of these villages. Sachin Pilot in his statement made to the media pointed out that though the teledensity in Metros like Mumbai and Delhi was soon to touch 130-140% the same wasn’t the case in rural areas. In rural India the teledensity is still 18 to 20 per cent.As pa...

BSNL Introduces 24 MBPS Broadband & Blackberry Services In India
2010-02-24 05:53:00 BSNL the state owned telecom giant has started making giant strides in the services its providing. The latest one is the launch of 24 MBPS broadband connection that will now be available to consumers. But wait a minute! there is a catch this would be provided only to those consumers who reside close to BSNL’s broadband exchange nodes. The 24 Mbps broadband will be available to customers who are at a distance of up to 500 metres and 16 Mbps broadband will be available to customers up to around 1 km from the exchange. The cost of both these high speed broadbands is quite high too 24 MBPS at 9999 per month and 16 MBPS at 4999 per month. There have been reports of BSNL launching connections of upto 500 MBPS even earlier but nothing has seen the light of the day. Infact India is pegged to hit a meagre number of 20 million broadband connection in the next 5 years which means that such high speeds with such expensive tags rarely have a ready market out there just yet. This shows your bandwidth and your the speed of ping or packet loss(something that should never happen). How to save Maxis Broadband bandwidth usage
2009-11-04 07:55:00 I have already registered the Maxis Broadband RM78 plan (3 GB modem included) for couple of month now. As far as I can say, this plan is good for non-heavy user to just checking their email, browsing web etc. It’s also best solution for those who travelling a lot. Those who often to watch videos on YouTube and other streaming sites, I advised you should avoid this plan. It’s impossible for you to use 3 GB in a month. Majority of Maxis Broadband users who opt for this limited data transfer plans usually end up exceeding their bandwidth caps. Most Wireless Broadband in Malaysia has some limit on the amount of bandwidth you can enjoy a month before they start throttling your line. So, don’t get cheated to Maxis Broadband salesman! =D Here are few tips which will helping you to save your bandwidth while using Maxis Broadband. 1) Disable the function to load images and sound 2) Turn On Pop-Up Blocker 3) Turn off the automatic update settings in Windows. 4) Disable all soft...

Broadband Internet A Legal Right In Finland – When Will India Have On
2009-10-20 09:33:00 (With inputs by Abhishek Kapoor) In the era of stringent Tweeting bans compared to performance drug tests, this news will not come as a shock to many. An unshakable belief in something without need for a proof or evidence could be the importance of internet in each one’s life today. With India working up their internet penetration in the rural areas, it would achieve 20 million broadband users by 2010. Now we are at the end of 2009 and the TRAI latest numbers suggest that broadband penetration in India has just about managed to reach 6.8 million subscribers. Even countries of the European Union seem to be deeming high-speed internet as a vital human right. Recently in news, Finland legally mandated fast internet access to all it’s citizens and is the first to do so. Even the United Nations have okayed this particular move, where a universal service should be every citizen’s right. The minimum mandatory speed in Finland currently needs to be 1 megabit per second, b...

Broadband tax ‘to be made law’
2009-09-23 15:01:00 A broadband tax, which will see everyone with a fixed telephone line paying 50p extra a month, "will be law before the next election". This is according to the Stephen Timms, the Minister for Digital Britain. Speaking at a debate in London, Mr Timms said the tax will be presented to parliament as part of the Finance Bill. But the Tory MP John Whittingdale said the tax, which could raise up to £175m a year to fund high speed networks, would be opposed by the Conservatives. "I’m confident the Conservative party will oppose it. I object to it on the basis that it is another tax and is aimed at people who are using old technology," said Mr Whittingdale, who is also chair of the DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) select committee. Speaking at a debate organised by BCS (The British Computer Society), Mr Timms reiterated the government’s commitment to the levy and the other recommendations of Lord Carter’s Digital Britain report. ...

20 Million Broadband Users Will Take 5 Years While Govt Approves Broadband
2009-09-15 08:04:00 The Broadband Policy of 2004 stated that India would achieve 20 million broadband users by 2010. Now we are at the end of 2009 (almost) and the TRAI latest numbers suggest that broadband penetration in India has just about managed to reach 6.8 million subscribers! At this rate the target of 20 million broadband subscribers would be reached by 2014 so said Mr Manoj Kohli,Chairman, CII National Committee on Telecom and Broadband and CEO and Joint Managing Director of Bharti AirTel Ltd. Inspite of this slow growth the CII is aiming for 214 million connections by 2014 i.e. in the next 5 years. A tall ask if you ask us. The wire line infrastructure in India is certainly not equipped to provide this growth. What may give it the impetus is the upcoming wimax auctions which may lead to India being connected via Wimax. We have reported earlier on how 20% of the worlds wimax internet connections might be in India by 2012 and that could be the way broadband penetration could grow. There are a...
