Divorce Ban in California could be on the ballot
2009-11-09 16:15:00
Photo Credit:oter via Flickr CC I've been saying for a while now that since they don't want to give gays the right to marriage then at least they should ban divorce - and it just may happen in California. Late last month California Secretary of State Debra Bowen gave John Marcotte the go ahead to start collecting signatures to potentially add a question on the ballot to ban divorce in California.  He will need at least 694,354 signatures. In essence it will remove the ability for people to get divorced but still allow for annulment of marriages - and one of the main reasons given?  It will save the government hundreds of millions of dollars by having fewer cases...

Since winter is upon us in Chicago, I decided to head out to California for a little bit to extend my riding season. Instead of a red carpet, upon my arrival I was given a red 2010 Ducati Monster 696 to use while I am out here. Thanks to Michael Lock, President and CEO of Ducati North America for making that happen. So far the Monster is fun and nimble, and the perfect bike to navigate though LA traffic. I will be riding Pacific Coast Highway tomorrow and will be sure to write about it. Stay tuned.Picking up the Monster from Southern California Ducati...
People: California Foundation Snags School Reform Guru
2009-11-05 16:12:00
First the Carnegie Foundation picked a new president Tony Bryk (instead of Linda Darling Hammond).  Then the foundation came up with a whole new set of priorities (something about community colleges, I think). Now they're bringing John Ayers, one of Chicago's best-known education connectors out to make things really work.  In Chicago, Ayers was longtime head of LQE, a pro-charter nonprofit, and then helped with Greg Richmond's National Association of Charter School Authorizers. Most recently, he helped launch Union Park High Schools, an effort to bring unionized charter schools to Chicago.  Bryk and Ayers know each other from the bad old days when they worked on the Chicago Consortium on School Research, a quasi-independent research outfit that other cities like NYC...

2009-09-19 20:52:00
California has now reached Great Depression unemployment levels.  Many are now calling the end of the recession but there is no sign that California is inching closer to prosperity.  Last month the unemployment rate shot up to a post-World War II high of 12.2 percent.  This is only the official headline number.  The unemployment ...
Mandated Spay/Neuter Fails in California As It Has Here (as it should fail)
2009-09-18 22:55:00
I am NOT a fan of mandated spay/neuter. Listen, I've worked for years as hard as anyone to support the notion of spay/neuter. Absolutely, in general, spaying/neutering is the responsible right thing to do!However, these mandates to spay/neuter carry with them FAR too many unintended consequences. And as a result these mandates do more harm than good. A coalition of groups opposing spay/neuter came together in California where a state-wide proposal for a mandate was recently rejected. Here's the story....

The Cubs wrap up their Southern California trip today and it can't end  soon enough.  These California games this year have been a complete  disaster.  The Cubs have gone 1-8 in the Golden State with 4 more  after this series up in San Francisco on the final trip of the year.   In the 8 losses, the Cubs have plated 10 measly runs COMBINED.  That's  head-scratchingly brutal.  The Cubs today will try to avoid falling  back to .500 for the first time since the All-Star break.  Hard to  believe this team was at 9 over .500 on August 4.  Like I wrote  recently, I've learned to never say never in this crazy game, but  unless this team does a 180 ASAP...

Lunch at Simmzy's Pub in Manhattan Beach, California

SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Walking through the streets of downtown Manhattan Beach is a favorite pastime of ours. The area has a nice beachy upscale feeling and some of our favorite coffee shops, eateries and such. When new establishments come to town we check them out as soon as we can. One such place we observed is Simmzy's Pub, a relative newcomer. I remember this space housing a Japanese restaurant not long ago. We noticed crowds every time we passed by Simmzy's and that only increased our wish to visit it in the near future. We had lunch there last week and here is the verdict.Rate and Review : Lunch at Simmzy's Pub in Manhattan Beach, California
Weekday Lunch at Hank's Bistro in Lawndale, California
2009-08-06 19:21:00
SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: I have not been to Hank's Bistro in several years prior to this last visit. We used to go there for good Persian food all the time. A lunch time meeting with a friend in the area reminded me of this restaurant and the decision was made to have our mid day meal there. We met around noon on this weekday. The restaurant is located on the corner of Hawthorne Blvd and Rosecrans in a mini mall. The signs for the restaurant have faded a bit and the inscription with the name was hard to read. The Persian lettering was more obvious.Rate and Review : Weekday Lunch at Hank's Bistro in Lawndale, California
Hold On, I Gotta Go Fix the California Economy
2009-07-22 14:05:00
FreeDigitalPhotos.com Man! It's like I gotta do everything my damn self. California lawmakers say they've figured out how to close the state's $26 billion budget deficit. Aside from $15 billion in spending cuts, including stripping $9 billion from education, everything should be just peachy! They're also printing IOUs, which is exactly how my friend Ian and I used to handle our borrowing-money-for-candy deficits when we were nine. I've heard a lot of talk recently about how California is basically an ungovernable state, with an absurd direct-vote ballot initiative system that basically lets citizens request all the goodies they want with no way to pay for it all. Cali also requires a two-thirds vote from the legislature to raise taxes, which basically...
California: From Golden State to Foldin? State In One Generation

California Proposes new Method to Standardize Testing for Tires
2009-06-20 22:31:00
Low rolling resistance tires are just now coming into the spotlight with many manufacturers, most likely due to the steadily increasing averages they are required to meet. One issue with the production of these new tires is the lack of a standardized method of testing and rating them based on how much resistance they produce. A new proposal by the California Energy Commission (CEC)hopes to solve this problem and help consumers move toward the new tires by removing all the guesswork.
Biodegradable here--but not in California?
2009-06-19 23:59:00
Have you ever seen this on a label of a biodegradable item: 100% biodegradable! (except as defined by California)?I saw that little "except" message after I came home with a bag of doggie poop bags for Scoop. But I was stumped as to what that meant. Were they not really biodegradable? What were the standards there vs. elsewhere? Naturally, I had to investigate.According to California:Defines "biodegradable" to mean a material which generally will decompose when it is disposed within one year through natural processes into a nontoxic condition, as defined. Now, I can't find any mention of what standards are used to define biodegradability in other states, but I can't say it's looking good for all those products out there that...

Prop 8 Decision Day: California Upholds Discrimination

On YouTube Tuesday, May 26, 2009 will go down as an eventful San Francisco day, sunny, and yet dark, and one that saw a lot of people marginalized who didn’t want to be. But then, who does. Before I turn to who said what, and who got arrested, I stick my head right into the belly of the beast, the California Supreme Court’s decision. Today, in first upholding Proposition 8, the voter-approved initiative to make same-sex marriage illegal that passed in November 2008, and yet protecting the 18,000 same-sex marriages that were done before the passage of the initiative, the California Supreme Court successfully stood logic on its head. I’ve just read the Court’s entire 167-page decision, and while I understand the reasons given by the majority of justices (six supporting the decision, one against it and even then the six judges that agreed were not perfect in their union) I’m concerned with the l...
