Man United Crash Out Of The Carling Cup
2010-11-30 22:46:00 West Ham have knocked Manchester United out of the Carling Cup after a 4-0 thrashing. Sir Alex Ferguson made 10 changes to the side who beat Blackburn 7-1 at the weekend. Anderson was the only player not to make way with Tomasz Kuszczak, John O?Shea, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans, Fabio da Silva, Darren Fletcher, Ryan Giggs, Tiago Bebe, Javier Hernandez and Gabriel Obertan all coming into the side. The Hammers thought they took the lead with 16 minutes on the clock, a strike by Victor Obinna took a deflection off Johnathan Spector and flew past Kuszczak. Mark Clattenberg took a few minutes to speak with his assistant, resulting in the goal being disallowed. Replays showed that Spector was just offside when the ball hit him. Minutes later, West Ham did take the lead. Luis Boa Morte burst forward, his cross into the area found Carlton Cole, he laid the ball off to Obinna and his ball in was headed past Kuszczak by Spector. Spector had his second eight minutes before half time aft...

Carling Cup Preview: West Ham V Manchester United
2010-11-30 15:00:00 Tonight Manchester United take on West Ham at Upton Park in the Carling Cup Quarter-Finals. A win tonight would keep United on course to win the Carling Cup for a third successive year. The last time United lost in this competition was back in September 2007 in a shock defeat to Coventry. Man United go into the game with their unbeaten record in all competitions still intact after hammering Blackburn 7-1 at the weekend. West Ham go into the game off the back of a 3-1 win over Wigan, which was their first win in six matches. Hammers boss Avram Grant will be without the injured Jack Collison, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Mark Noble, Manuel da Costa, Anthony Edgar and Peter Kurucz. He will also be missing Scott Parker, who has been suffering from a virus and defender Lars Jacobsen is cup-tied. Sir Alex Ferguson will make wholesale changes to the side who beat Blackburn with players such as Chris Smalling, Fabio da Silva, Federico Macheda and Javier Hernandez expected to start. The two cl...

Late Winner From Hernandez Takes United Through To The Quarters
2010-10-27 00:30:00 Substitute Javier Hernandez scored a very late winner against Wolves to take Manchester United through to the Quarter-Finals of the Carling Cup. Sir Alex Ferguson made 11 changes to the side with Ben Amos starting in goal, and Bebe made his first start for the club. Wes Brown, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans, Fabio Da Silva, Gabriel Obertan, Michael Carrick, Darron Gibson, Ji-Sung Park and Federico Macheda all came into the side. Youngsters Ravel Morrison, Magnus Eikrem and Robbie Brady were named on the bench along with Tomasz Kuszczak, Gary Neville, Hernandez and Rafael Da Silva. A very forgettable first half was overshadowed by a much brighter second half, which saw five goals scored. The first of the five came in the 56th minute after Bebe's strike took a deflections off Wolves defender George Elokobi and over keeper Wayne Hennessey to give United the lead. The ball was cleared by Kevin Foley but the ball did go over the line and the goal was correctly awarded. United's celebr...

Manchester United v Wolverhampton Wanderers Preview
2010-10-26 08:00:00 This evening current holders of the Carling Cup, Manchester United will take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the fourth round of the competition. United faced Wolves last year in the third round of the Carling Cup, with the tie being decided by a Danny Welbeck second half goal. Mick McCarthy returns to Old Trafford for the first time since last Wolves lost 2-0 last December. After fielding a weakened side against Man United during that game, Wolves were fined £250,000. Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to field some of the younger players, with Federico Macheda, Darron Gibson, Bebe and Chris Smalling all expected to play a part. Michael Owen has reportedly recovered from a hamstring injury, which could mean that he may start up front. Antonio Valencia, Wayne Rooney, Owen Hargreaves, Ryan Giggs and Jonny Evans will all be unavailable for the clash. Wolves will be without Ronald Zubar, Michael Knightly and Jody Cradock, who are all injured. They will also be without the suspended K...

Fergie Misses 5-2 Win Over Scunthorpe
2010-09-23 00:11:00 After an early scare, Manchester United came from 1-0 down to beat Scunthorpe United 5-2 at Glanford Park. Sir Alex Ferguson was absent after flying out to Spain to watch Champions League opponents Valencia play Atletico Madrid. United made 11 changes to the team who beat Liverpool- Tomasz Kuszczak, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Chris Smalling, Rafael Da Silva, Ji-Sung Park, Anderson, Darron Gibson, Javier ?Chicharito? Hernandez, Michael Owen and Federico Macheda all came in. Scunthorpe got off to the better start with five efforts in the first 15 minutes and deservedly took the lead in the 19th minute. Josh Wright hit a brilliant 25-yard strike, which flew past Kuszczak and into the top corner. The dream start only lasted for four minutes; a long ball from from Smalling was lobbed over the keeper by Gibson. The equaliser for Man United didn?t phase the home side, who continued to attack; forcing some less than convincing saves from Kuszczak. A great finish by Smalling from a cro...

Tottenham wins Carling Cup
2008-02-25 16:55:00 Tottenham fightback with an extra-time winner over Chelsea in the Carling Cup final at Wembley. A first-half goal from Didier Drogba, his 10th of the season, put Chelsea on the brink of a second successive Carling Cup triumph but a second-half penalty from Dimitar Berbatov sent the game into extra-time. Then just four minutes into the extended period, a somewhat fortunate header from Woodgate

Tottenham win carling cup
2008-02-24 19:24:00 Tottenham came from a goal down to beat Chelsea at Wembley and win the Carling Cup after extra-time. Jonathan Woodgate won it when Petr Cech disastrously punched the ball on to his head from Jermaine Jenas's free-kick. Pascal Chimbonda had hit the bar for Spurs, before Didier Drogba's 20-yard free-kick gave Chelsea the lead with Paul Robinson badly out of position. Spurs levelled when Wayne Bridge handled in the box and Dimitar Berbatov coolly rolled in the resulting penalty. Spurs' success is their fourth League Cup win and first since 1999, the last time they won a major trophy. It also means their boss Juande Ramos has still never lost a cup final as a manager after five triumphs in Spain with Sevilla. It ends Chelsea's quadruple hopes in Avram Grant's first season as Blues boss, though they are still in the hunt for the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup. Spurs set their stall out early on and began in a positive fashion in the first League Cup final at the new Wem...

FA Carling Cup: Chelsea 1-0 Everton
2008-01-24 04:35:00 Joe Cole's decisive second-half strike broke Everton's hearts and sent Chelsea to their third Carling Cup final in four years following a 1-0 win at Goodison. Spurs vs arsenal - Carling Cup Semi Final, 2nd Leg: Que sera sera
2008-01-23 09:32:00 Prologue Writing a match report for me is thoroughly involved affair. I’m not even sure why I do it the way I do. It was never a conscious decision. I’ve tried in the past to cut them down, to give the facts and more than anything to keep them brief, but I can’t. I just can’t and believe me, they take plenty of time to compose. But don’t for one second I do it expecting any kind of rewards. I have my selfish motives, because every word I type takes me back to those 90 minutes and I get to relive it all over again. It’s 1.28am - a few hours after referee Howard Webb sounded the final whistle, not that anyone actually heard it. I’m sitting at the desk of my night job ready to spend the shift telling my tale. The only problem is I don’t know if I can handle going through it all over again. Football fans die early, I’ve always said that. We stand there week after week being put through the mill by our chosen clubs dear to our hearts,...
FA Carling Cup: Tottenham 5-1 Arsenal
2008-01-23 04:34:00 Tottenham ended more than eight years of failure against arch-rivals Arsenal in some style with a resounding 5-1 (6-2 agg) win at White Hart Lane to book a trip to Wembley in the Carling Cup final. Robbie Keane and Aaron Lennon added more in the second half to extend the remarkable run of Spurs

The Mail gets into a tangle ahead of the Carling Cup
2008-01-22 12:32:00 We all know journalists are specialists at taking a quote and then creating a story out of it, generally missing the whole point (perhaps deliberately). But sometimes, the contradictions are just too blatent. Check out the Mail's preview of the Arsenal-Spurs tie: The bad news for the Tottenham skipper is that Arsene Wenger is set to abandon his policy of fielding his reserves and play a near full-strength team in tonight's Carling Cup semi-final second leg at White Hart Lane. Really? That would be against everything Wenger's said, so I wonder if they've got any quotes to back that up? Scroll down a little, and you find Wenger's comments: "I will rotate the squad which means those that didn't play on Saturday will play at Tottenham. I will put the younger players out and have experienced ones on the bench because the squad has been reduced. On the bench you might find a high number of Premier League players." So not a 'near full-strength team' at all, then. Glad we've clea...
carling cup: arsenal v tottenham, referee did ok for once
2008-01-11 02:16:00 A little bit of a late posting, however I feel I really ought to do this later than never. I know in the past he hasn't been an Arsenal fan's favourite (are referees ever anyone's favourite?) for obvious reasons, however for the sake of being fair, I should point out that the man-in-the-middle for Arsenal's game against Tottenham in the Carling Cup, Mike Dean, did a fair job. They say the best referees are those that you do not notice and for the first time in a long time, I saw a game where I don't remember the referee getting in the way of the game. In fact, I don't even recall...

carling cup: arsenal v tottenham
2008-01-09 23:52:00 For a few days now, I've had a somewhat irrational feeling that tonights game could be the one where Tottenham did the unthinkable, having not done so in a very long time indeed. Being a football supporter, I'm just as superstitious as your next fan and watching the omens, things weren't looking good. The game was delayed 15 minutes - can't remember the last time that happened. The Arsenal website (in spite of reports to the contrary) still had tickets to this game available to Red Members up to the cut-off point at 11am this morning - that doesn't happen very often. In recent North London derbies, Wenger has had a sprinkling of the old guard on the bench, just in case - today, there were only one or two of them. So the game started, and for the first half hour or so, we were very positive. However once it settled down, Tottenham started...

Match Preview: Arsenal vs. Tottenham (Carling Cup)
2008-01-07 23:39:00 After Arsenal’s 2-0 over Burnley in the FA Cup, with easy goals by Eduardo and Bendtner, tomorrow’s game is a further chance for the young guns to prove themselves. The Burnley game was not particularly pleasant - Kolo Toure’s defensive greatness coupled with the class of Eduardo being the only highlights - nor particularly entertaining. Burnley certainly showed their spirit in the game though, and due to Diaby’s and Traore’s abysmal play, generated a few clear chances. (more…)

carling cup: wenger’s english players impress
2007-12-20 04:21:00 A couple of days have passed since the Young Guns dispatched Mark Hughes' Blackburn from the Carling Cup, and it strikes me that I haven't heard much in the news regarding the impressive display of the young English players that featured in that game. I thought it only fair that I should attempt to correct what is clearly an anomaly. Wenger named four English boys in the 16-man (16-kid?) squad that travelled, with the able Justin Hoyte (aged 23) and Mark Randall (18) in the starting line-up, along with Kieran Gibbs (18) and Justin's younger brother Gavin Hoyte (17) providing cover on the bench. The four lads...
