Penguins-Hurricanes Storylines
2009-05-15 13:50:00
Now that the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Washington Capitals, we can all focus on the Eastern conference final between the Pens and the Carolina Hurricanes, who defeated the Boston Bruins in a tremendous game seven Thursday night. For those of you seeking storylines for the series, let me be of assistance of what you may (or may not) hear from sportscasters and writers over the next week.- Eric Staal and Jordan Staal are brothers. I feel like you should hear this from me since the announcers will fail to mention this. - Although Tuomo Ruutu is the brother of former Penguin Jarkko Ruutu, Pirate great Turner Ward is not related to Carolina's goalie Cam Ward.- Scott Walker, who scored the series winning goal against Boston, is not a Texas Ranger even though he may think he is after punching out the Bruins? Aaron Ward.- Sergei Samsonov and Simeon Varlamov are not the same person.- It's time for Bill Cowher to decide whether he supports the Penguins or the Canes. - Cam Ward an...
Carolina Hurricanes?post trade deadline
2009-03-08 20:33:00
As usual, I’m a day (or more) late and a dollar (or more) short.  I was supposed to write a pre-trade deadline post about what the Hurricanes could possibly do on Trade Deadline day.  Part of the reason I didn’t write it is because who the heck ever knows what Jim Rutherford is going to ...
Carolina Hurricanes do plenty of favors with loss
2008-04-05 21:07:00
Oh, Carolina. Forget the sprawling tobacco fields dominating the Tar Heel state. Hurricanes' fans are going to need something a little stronger to numb this pain.I mean, it was simple, really. Game 82. Win and you're in. And this wasn't exactly the San Jose Sharks we are talking here. It was the Florida freakin' Panthers, at home nonetheless. And yet the ‘Canes choked, putting smiles on the collective faces of a whole lot of teams. Among those, of course, were the Ottawa Senators, who lost to Boston but still managed to slip into The Dance through the side door.To be fair, Carolina dominated in every aspect of the game, except the most important one.Think Pittsburgh or Montreal wanted the Washington Capitals to sneak into that final spot? I can assure you they did not. Nice reward for finishing first in the conference, huh? A team that won nine of their past ten as the prize? No thanks. But the ‘Canes didn't do their part, saving the Penguins the hassle of having to p...
The Color of Success
2008-04-02 17:20:00
(c) OnFrozenBlog - http://www.onfrozenblog.com/ - My good friend Eric McErlain didn’t pick a good night to play hookie from the hockey rink. But he doesn’t have much red in his wardrobe anyway. But first thing’s first. I asked for one WaPost columnist to attend Tuesday night and George Solomon sent two, including himself. There ...

2008-03-28 09:42:00
(c) OnFrozenBlog - http://www.onfrozenblog.com/ - Four days have passed since our original Stretch Run post, so an update to The Playoff Picture table seems in order. A Stretch Run That Could Yield a Southeast Facelift
2008-03-24 15:17:00
(c) OnFrozenBlog - http://www.onfrozenbog.com/ - Take a look at the records of these Southeast division teams in their last 10 games: Carolina: 8-2-0; Washington: 7-3-0; Florida: 8-1-1 That’s a .766 winning percentage by the division’s top three teams in crunch time. All three have entered March as lions. These seem more like performances by Southbeasts ...

Trade Ovechkin? It May Come to That
2007-12-23 19:15:00
(c) OnFrozenBlog - http://www.onfrozenblog.com/ - The Comcast broadcast booth discussion last night of Mike Cammalleri’s game — Coach Boudreau informing JoeB and Craig that the gifted LA Kings’ pivot was, after Ovechkin, the most gifted hockey player he’d seen up close (Boudreau coached him in Manchester) — was interesting to me, to say the least. Knee-jerks & Notes: @ Carolina, 11/05
2007-11-06 06:28:00
(c) OnFrozenBlog - http://www.onfrozenblog.com/ - Somewhat ferocious and foul fall weather descended upon Washington late Monday evening. A propos given the dark clouds clinging to HockeyWashington these days.   It would have been easy — knee-jerkish, even — to absorb a 3-0 first-period dark well dwelling and react with “Another flat effort from the Caps,” or ...
Update: Carolina Has Diving Penalties Reviewed
2007-11-02 16:36:00

Carolina Hurricanes returning to NHL elite
2007-10-31 20:37:00
If the sheer thought of the Stanley Cup being awarded to another colorless hockey outpost is keeping you awake at night, be prepared to lose a little more sleep. As much as I hate to be the bearer of bad news, the Carolina Hurricanes are back. Now with no offense intended to those fine bumpkins down on Tobacco Road, seeing hockey's grail in Carolina is like, well, seeing Jeff Gordon claim the Nextel Cup in Saskatoon. Try as you might, it just doesn't fit.Or, as they say down there in catfish country, it don't fit. Y'all.Stereotypical, perhaps, but in places where hockey is king, Carolina's sporting culture is generally perceived as some obtuse, beast of a woman in spandex causing the earth to shake as she thunders down pit row, the backwash from an Old Milwaukee splashing all over a cutoff shirt, begging Dale Earnhardt, Jr. to sign her bra.Hockey? Hell, no.But much to the chagrin of so-called traditionalists everywhere, those Hurricanes are back for more.In all fairness, it's ...

The Hurricanes Open Their Doors, Wide
2007-08-07 11:16:00
(c) OnFrozenBlog - http://www.onfrozenblog.com/ - It’s supposed to be about a million degrees today in D.C., so necessarily I’m insulating myself with frigid thoughts. Specifically, I have Sunday, September 16 on my mind. It’ll still be mild-to-warm then, especially in Raleigh, North Carolina, but Hurricanes’ management is doing something wonderfully frosty for the Research ...

Looking for the NHL's 2007 Carolina Hurricanes
2006-08-24 18:00:00
Though they shouldn't be expected to receive much positive billing as the season approaches, the lowly Chicago Blackhawks have also made great strides forward. Talented forwards Martin Havlat and Michal Handzus were imported from Ottawa and Philadelphia, respectively, and should give the offense a significant boost. But the key for the Blackhawks is goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin, a 2005 free agent acquisition who turned out to be ? by a wide margin ? last season's biggest bust. If the "Bulin' Wall" gets back on track, the Blackhawks could once again be a playoff contender. Thanks to Kevin Greenstein
