Censorship

YOU CAN'T DO THIS ON TWITTER
2012-02-03 19:03:00
Twitter is in the spotlight because of its new and controversial per-country blocking system--the power for governments to censor and withhold public tweets that violate local laws. Although the specifics are a bit murky, according to Foreign Policy magazine, here are 5 things that you can't/shouldn't do on Twitter in the United States, for they can lead to some serious legal trouble: Cyberbullying, pranking police, coordinating unlawful behavior, threatening violence and not removing tweets by request. Check out the full implications of each here and stay out of Twitter trouble!
Special Feature: Is Twitter Flirting With Self – Censorship?
2012-01-27 08:45:00
Twitter has established itself as the poster child (social network) of Rebellion against Governments. The evil one’s anyway! When you look at the uprisings last year in Egypt and Libya, you will realize the role Twitter played. In India, Twitter was used to drive awareness about Jan Lokpal and Anna Hazare. It has established itself as the safest bastion of free-speech and anonymity. Twitter allows anonymous accounts as opposed to Facebook and Google+. Everyone feels that even though these other social networks are getting carried away by this whole ‘real name’ thing, Twitter is the safe hideout for those who wish to remain anonymous on the Internet. Looks like this is going to change soon.Twitter has now announced via its blog that they have affected certain changes on its network which will allow it to remove certain sensitive tweets coming from a country if asked to do so by law. This is pretty shocking! They are assuring us before we take umbrage to this, that they will ...

Anti-SOPA Fire Spreading; This Time Mozilla Opposes The Censorship
2012-01-20 07:12:00
The Anti-SOPA movement has gathered considerable momentum & is reaching millions & urging them to sit-up, take notice & get into action. We had recently witnessed how Wikipedia had chosen a simple, yet strong Anti SOPA message by “blackening-out” their website. Well, Mozilla’s start-up page, which statistics shows is displayed on 30 Million PCs in US alone was effectively used by the Mozilla foundation to spread the Anti-SOPA message to users of its (not-so-popular) Browser! Combine that with Mozilla’s presence in the Social Networking sphere, the message reached around 40 Million people in the US. Well, they surely got the message across. What is the “Action” part? Reassuringly, even this action, was effectively elicited from the users from across the group who chose to protest: From Mozilla’s efforts, 3,60,000 emails were sent to Congress. Google’s users responded more aggressively, with 7 million signatures to its petitions. Twitter, though backed-...

Google Replies Strongly Against Censorship
2012-01-19 08:30:00
It seems the entire world is struggling to break free from the slowly tightening grips of censorship on the Internet. We had our very own Kapil Sibal a few weeks back, and now we have a new villian called Mr. Vinay Rai who wants to censor “objectionable” content on Google, Facebook and other sites which harm the harmony of a nation. It’s not just India, even the USA is buckling under sudden new Internet regulations like SOPA which are against piracy. Popular websites like Wikipedia, and Reddit, etc. have shown their support against the bill by shutting down the sites and going on a blackout. And, Barack Obama today announced that he is against any such bills. And it looks like Google India is our hero against the censorship crusade! Google’s advocate and spokesperson have made it completely clear that India being a democracy, can not have any censorship on the Right to Freedom. In the official release, Google says - The issue relates to a constitutional issu...

Have you been paying attention to all the hubbub online about the proposed U.S. legislation (SOPA/PIPA) that threatens internet freedom? I wrote about it last week over on WordPress.org, but the gist is this: there’s a bill in the U.S. Senate that if passed would put publishing freedom severely at risk, and could shut down entire sites at the whim of media companies. Fight for the Future created this nifty video to sum it up better than I can. On January 18, 2012, sites all over the internet will be blacking out to protest and try to mobilize more people to speak out against this bill coming up in the Senate next week — S. 968: the Protect IP Act (PIPA) — in an attempt to let U.S. lawmakers know how much opposition there is. WordPress.org, Wikipedia, and even WordPress.com VIP I Can Has Cheezburger? will be participating in the blackout to raise awareness and spur you to action. Here on WordPress.com, we want to participate as well. Freshly Pressed will be bl...
Internet Censorship in India
2012-01-07 05:07:00
Blocking of websites in India for political considerations has been in news for some time. The fact that this power is being politically misused is confirmed by the incident where the website of a political cartoonist, Mr Aseem Trivedi participating in the Anna Hazare protest in MMRDA grounds has been blocked. Indirect Censorship: Reliance Communication Heading The Crusade As Per Gove
2011-12-26 10:02:00
Hundreds of users connecting to the Internet through Reliance’s internet gateway (Reliance broadband), found themselves unable to access file-sharing websites. Reliance has come forth saying the Government of India made them do it. The ISP Reliance Communication has blocked many popular websites like: Megaupload and Filesonic. People trying to access these are greeted with a “This site has been blocked“, & the insult continues, with a line saying that the message has been “copyrighted” by Reliance Entertainment! The method may be a small step to curb piracy, but, it ironically violates the law itself as the authority to block websites in India rests only with Department of Information and Technology (DIT) and even if a court has ordered blocking of a website, the procedure has to be initiated by DIT officials. Though Government’s pal Reliance is sheltering itself “Under Section 79 of the IT Act”, it’s agenda is to stop the rampant piracy of...

SOPA Internet Censorship: What you need to know and why you and I must act
2011-11-19 02:46:00
On November 16th, the US Congress held hearings on the first American Internet censorship system knows as the “Stop Online Piracy Act,” or SOPA. This bill can pass. If it does the Internet and free speech will never be the same. Imagine a country where the government is able to shut down Web sites at the slightest provocation, where elected representatives invoke fears of “overseas pirates” to defend the interests of domestic industries, and where Internet companies like Google must cave in to the demands of government censors or risk being shut down. No, we are not talking about China, North Korea or Iran — we are talking about the United States, where legislators in both the House and Senate are attempting to push through new anti-piracy legislation by year-end that would benefit Hollywood at the expense of Silicon Valley. Some of the most powerful players in Silicon Valley — Google, Facebook, Zynga, eBay, Twitter, Yahoo, and LinkedIn — have made thei...

SOPA: Internet Censorship
2011-11-17 23:30:00

SOPA ? This New Censorship Bill is a Job Killer
2011-11-17 21:49:00
SOPA Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the deceptively named Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). Representative Lamar Smith (R-Tex.) introduced the bill on October 26, 2011 as H.R.3261. SOPA expands the Internet censorship provisions of the Protect IP Act, a bill Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) shepherded into law earlier this year. These ...

V.P.B. Nair Told BBC Sai Baba Bedroom Killings Were ?Coldblooded Murder?
2011-01-06 11:49:00
In mid 2004, former Andhra Pradesh Home Secretary, V.P.B. Nair spoke to the BBC about the official corruption that attended the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba's bedroom in June 1993. He said he intended to take steps to get the case re-opened. But has he done anything of the sort? It is an odd irony that exposure of these killings at Puttaparthi, and the subsequent profound suppression of investigation, have been effectively left up to two individuals gifted with cussed unstoppableness - the late Basava Premanand in India and Robert Priddy in Norway.

Blogs and Censorship: Crossing The Line on Freedom of Speech? Who Decides? As a blogger for a syndicated site, one must constantly worry about "crossing the line" of the sites guidelines. Sadly, it dilutes the passion of the blogger, who by the definition of "form, fit and function" are simply adhering to the premise of the concept. Blogging is about sharing personal ideas and thoughts....Personal opinions on politics, religion, race relations or society in general should be freely debated without fear of censorship.

The two posts in question outlined a "template" for the aftermath of urban police murders, generalizing witness statements and standardizing legal fallout as it specifically related to the recent police murder of George Lash.Critics of the Arresting Tales posts accused Joe The Cop, the blog's author, of being insensitive to the plight of young black America, in addition to more serious accusations like racism and ignorance. The posts received numerous reader comments, most in support of the post. Links to the Arresting...

One reason why censorship won’t work 100% — not even in China — is that people will always look for a way around it. People have an intrinsic drive to be free, and to freely avail of information. To satisfy this, technology is readily available to anyone who needs it. I was fortunate to have ...
Nityananda Scandal. Police Seize Indicting Material. Why No Raids On Sathya
2010-04-25 23:34:00
Why are Indian authorities and the Indian media so selective in exposing errant religious figures in that country. Anyone who knows a wide cross-section of Indians is well aware of the great shame they feel for the corrupt institutions in their country? Non-resident Indians (NRI's) are freely able to read exposing investigations in major western media such as the BBC, Times of London, Daily Telegraph, Guardian, and newspapers in Europe, Canada, Australia, etc., but are prohibited from doing so in their own country. In short, why is Nityananda being investigated and not Sathya Sai Baba too. In short, someone far more powerful and influential than Nityananda, and who commands almost unimaginable wealth?
Google Takes Steps To Secure Gmail After China-Censorship-Gmail-Hack Issue
2010-01-14 05:26:00
Yesterday we told you how GMail’s servers were almost hacked as Google discovered an attack originating from China which got through its security measures and compromised some intellectual property. Google also expressed their unwillingness to continue censoring results on Google China Search. Today, Google went one step ahead and has taken a step that might well affect GMail users all over the World. According to a blog post, from now on GMail will switch you over to the secure version of itself automatically once you login. They also have said that this has been rolled on to almost all GMail accounts all over the world. So from now on whenever you log into GMail, you might start seeing https://www.gmail  instead of http. (HTTPS stands for HTTP Secure, a protocol that helps protect data from being snooped by third parties, such as in public wifi hotspots) How will you be affected by this change? As https involves encryption and decryption of data, so using the https version...

Google To Take On China On Censorship Issue – Reacts After Data Theft
2010-01-13 09:43:00
Google has posted an elaborate blog post on its official blog titled ‘A new approach to China‘. Most people know that Google had compromised its freedom of speech stand to enter the chinese markets in 2005. The blogosphere was abuzz with multiple proofs of Google’s double standards and censorship of search results when it came to the chinese markets. Google in china has been involved in several controversies over the last 3 years. So much so that there is a wikipedia page dedicated to Google’s troubles in china. But now it seems google has made up its mind to take on the Chinese government. Google elaborates in a blog post stating ‘ We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google....

India Joins Censored List On Flickr – Start Of Internet Censorship?
2009-12-18 10:03:00
Well I for one was surprised when I came across this post about India joining the censored list of countries on Flickr. Im not sure how recently this was done but from what I know India was certainly not on the list last year. What this means is that if you access flickr from India you won’t be able to view moderate or restricted content. As the post continues to showcase there are discussions happening on why this was done? India joins a list of countries like Singapore, Hongkong and Korea who have the similar content censorship enabled on Flickr. Internet censorship is not new in the world. China has been at the forefront of this and even the Big Google has had to kneel down to their demands. My take on this is that censorship need not really be content specific but more a user specific approach. I mean based on age and personal preference one  can continue to censor what one wants to show or see on the web. Blanket censorship for a country is not something I completely agree ...

Heinlein on censorship by government
2009-11-23 15:44:00
?When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, ?This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know,? the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free. No, not the rack, not fission bombs, not anything?you can?t conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him.?Robert A. Heinlein (If This Goes On 1940)~:~Work with me, people, I'm thinking of the threat to Net Neutrality with this quote. Definitely I'll say that Stranger in a Strange Land is my favorite of Heinlein's novels. You?~:~Update: Mystery of the Sleepwalking Turkey has returned as a Thanksgiving cautionary tale!

Let Censorship Begin! (or not...)

In case you have missed any of the thrilling saga of the White House trying to burn the 1st Amendment of the constitution he is a quick recap of Obama's foray into press censorship via the White House War on Fox News:The war began when White House Communications Director Anita Dunn said that Fox News is "opinion journalism masquerading as news." And “Fox News often operates almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party, We’re going to treat them the way we would treat an opponent. As they are undertaking a war against Barack Obama and the White House, we don't need to pretend that this is the way that legitimate news organizations behave.'' Now this is the same Anita Dunn that just a few weeks ago admitted that during the campaign the Obama team "controlled" the press. And it is the same Anita Dunn who recently told a gymnasium of high schoolers that her most admired political philosopher is none other than Chairman Mao. And not to out...

Muzzling social media - Censorship by the Medium?
2009-07-14 10:41:00
As someone involved with Social Media, how comfortable are you with pushing the boundaries of the channel? Are you the sort who takes a look at what you can do and then plod along doing just that? In which case, there is enough and more already available to keep you happily occupied for the rest of your lifetime. Or are you the sort who, having quickly discovered the possibilities, pushes on to innovatively make the medium your own? In the second case, how would you feel if the medium in question (or its representatives) took you on or worse, censored your innovation? I’m guessing here, but you are likely to end up as a rather bitter user (make that an ex-user)! It doesn’t have to be something illegal or expressly banned. Any marketer or even user who goes down that route is clearly courting controversy, trouble or both. But what if it is a fresh new approach or a revolutionary new usage which was not intended by the founders? In the sense that although it was not part of the or...

They have a point. Enough already with the military’s ridiculous “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. And it’s about time we legalize gay marriage. Yet after the stunning parades this weekend and the first official recognition of the movement by a sitting working US President, I’m filled with more hope than ever before. Which is why I didn’t allow my blood pressure to rise when WFLA/News Channel 8 aired an “it would be disturbing if it weren’t so silly” documentaryinfomercial Saturday night about wicked gays trying to silence Christians. China's Netizens Declare they will Fight Back vs Censorship
2009-06-24 02:16:00
With the protests in Iran, there has been a lot of discussion in the news of late about the power of technology in circumventing government control and censorship. Of course no one knows this kind of censorship better than Chinese netizens, especially after these past few weeks that saw the blocking of popular social media sites and the introduction of the 'Green Dam' filtering software.in the face of such censorship, some more creative Chinese netizens (I have no idea who, or how many) have used Google Docs to release a declaration of war against this government imposed internet filtering.

Censorship Comes To Online Classifieds
2009-05-14 06:37:00
Craigslist, a dominant player in online classified segment would soon get rid of its “erotic services” section. This would in turn be replaced by a section called Adult Services with heavy moderation. This means all ads under the section would attract moderation before being published which in turn would lead to higher costs and slow postings. This comes in the wake of serious charges being framed against craigslist as various cases cropped up revealing the use of online classified as brothel and murder centric purposes despite the use of social moderation on site. The major heat turned on the craigslist when cases of violent crime erupted recently and was even termed as “the single largest source of prostitution in the nation” by a Illinois sheriff. Craigslist currently serves billions of page views and has till date published some 1.15 billion classified ads much bigger in size even to print ads. This type of government scrutiny is to make web safer but wou...
