World of Chocolate Draws a Sweet Crowd for Charity
2009-12-08 03:43:00
The sweetest place to be last week was at the World of Chocolate at the Chicago Hilton!  Benefitting the Aids Foundation of Chicago, this event attracted over 1,500 chocolate lovers and raised over $200,000.  28 of the city's finest restaurants, hotels, caterers and chocolatiers competed in five categories. The Peninsula walked away with three top prizes: the Locoa Cocoa Award for most creative use of chocolate, the Sweetbooth Award for best presentation as well as the People's Choice Award.  Terry's Toffee won the Hot Chocolate Award for overall tastiest treat and the University Club won the Chocoholic's Dream Award for most visually enticing dish. Check out these fun pics and I hope you all put this fun and worthy event...

Ice Bowl Great For Charity, Bad For Fans
2009-11-16 19:51:00
It's always a good thing when a charity event is sold out. More bodies equals more tickets equals more money for a good cause. Brent Seabrook's Charity Ice Bowl on Saturday afternoon was not only sold out, it was oversold. The event raised tons of money for I.C.E. (the Inner-City Education program) but left a lot of disappointed Blackhawks fans. At last year's event, Hawks players were available for photos and autographs from beginning to end. Players and fans could move from the lounge area to the lanes freely, allowing for a ton of interaction and a very relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. This year, for the first hour or so of the event the players were sequestered in a private room...

The Center for AIDS Prevention nonetheless launched an advertising campaign to solicit charitable donations, "including but not limited to on the websites of the Chicago Tribune and the Daily Herald," according to the complaint filed today in the Circuit Court of Cook County. Both the Center and its president, Morrell S. The newest person I've asked to Take a Book For Charity is...Dave Eggers. Why Dave Eggers? A couple of reasons, as I said in my email to him (care of McSweeney's.)Here's what I said:Why you? Because I saw that you autographed a book for a X-Prize blogger, which is enough of a link to get you invited to do this; and because I loved both "Heartbreaking Word" and "You Shall Know Our Velocity," and because I admire what you've done with McSweeney's... so I am asking you...And it's true. He did, for some reason, autograph a book for a guy who writes on a blog about the "X Prize" -- that's that prize that will be given out for private, manned space flight -- and he did, in fact, write two very good books that I've read. (He's probably written more, but I'm behind on my reading.)While we wait to see what Dave Eggers has to say about helping out the Shaw twins, don't forget to go bid on the book that's already up for auction!Take a Book For Charity is my program in which I a...

Do Good For Debt: Student Loans Traded For Charity Work
2009-05-17 12:00:00
Most students who complete a post-secondary education find themselves overburdened by the abundance of student loans they were forced to take out to finance their educations. As a result, they find themselves struggling to pay their bills as they try to start building their careers, which leaves little time or money to do anything else; finding the time to contribute to charity just is not a reasonable possibility. To make both things possible, Do Good for Debt was created to allow those with looming student loans to trade their debts for charity work.

After looking up the Paradigm Research Group for my post yesterday on The Best of Everything (it was about aliens!), I decided they might be interested in helping Mateo and McHale Shaw, so here's a copy of the email I sent out this morning:Mr. Stephen Bassett Executive Director Paradigm Research GroupMr. Bassett, I am writing to request that your group help raise funds for twin boys in Wisconsin who need help paying their medical bills. The boys are Mateo and McHale Shaw. They were born conjoined twins and need ongoing medical care. They have exhausted their insurance coverage and rely on donations to continue to pay for medical care. To help them, I have started a program called "Take a Book For Charity," in which I ask people to use a donated copy of my novel, "Eclipse" and do something interesting or charitable with it, after which I will auction it off and donate all proceeds to the Shaw twins. Steve From The Cubs Wants a Letter (Take a Book For Charity, 5)

Steve from the Cubs called me back -- remember, I'd emailed them and then they said to call Community Affairs, so I did, and left a message for Steve. When I got Steve on the phone, he was very polite. I explained to him, again, why I was calling and what it was all about."Well, you know, the players are hard, sometimes to get to sign stuff," Steve told me, preparing me for disappointment.I plugged on: "It doesn't have to be all the players," I said. "Whoever will sign."(Besides, I didn't add but wanted to, Besides, don't you, um, boss them around and can't you just say hey, sign this? But I didn't say that.)"We already do a lot for charity," Steve said. "And we only have so much merchandise we can give away or autograph."So I explained again: "I'm going to send you the books," I said. "You don't have to supply anything.""Yes, that's right," Steve said... agreeing that I in fact knew my own plan."So, what do you think?" I asked."Tell you what. Send us a letter," Stev...
The Cubs May Still Be Cool: (Take a Book for Charity, 4)
2009-04-20 20:18:00
There's a lecture here, and an update. Read on! As I continue trying to get people to Take A Book For Charity, a question arose: Lisa Pepin -- who writes Lost in Provence and reads Proust and takes long walks through gorgeous French countryside (that's right: envy her. A lot) asked how I got involved in this charity. The answer is that I'm not really involved. The Shaws are involved in the charity: they set up their own website to help with fundraising for Mateo and McHale's medical care. The Shaws have, as I understand it, exhausted their medical coverage because of the ongoing medical costs for their boys. -- And, you long time readers will understand my disgust that we live in a country that's rich enough to spend $72 million dollars in a weekend watching Fast & Furious, and yet parents have to beg for money to pay for necessary medical care. -- The Shaws then also set up a second charity to build a handicapped accessible playground in their neighborhood. I ...

McHale Shaw is recovering from surgery. His Mom, Angie, reported he and his brother Mateo and doing well. She also shared, on the Caring Bridge Website, this story from the day before surgery:One last thing we forgot to tell you - Tuesday, the day before McHale's surgery...I took the boys to the boys for a walk and to the nearby playground. I was alone, so since they can't walk -I put them both in the swings. Mateo looked at me and asked to go on the slide....hmmm....impossible with just me. There were a bunch of toddlers there so he asked time after time to go and play and to go on the slide...then McHale started asking to go play. As much work as this playground project is, it was a huge reminder why this playground is so important not only for Mateo and McHale but for every child. The more I read about Mateo and McHale Shaw, and their parents, the more I become grateful for all the good luck I've had, and the more I want to help them out. Which is why today I did another in...

Someone once said "All charity begins at home." Or maybe someone SHOULD have said that. Or maybe I just said that. Hang on... Imagine a person getting up and walking somewhere to check on something, like people used to do before Google... Apparently, the person that said that was "American Muslims," saying it to Obama, judging by Google results. Anyway, with that in mind, I'm turning to my long-standing desire to help out Mateo and McHale Shaw, and coupling that with my longstanding desire to write, and I am starting my "Take A Book For Charity" program, in which I will offer a copy of my book "Eclipse" to various people or groups and ask that they do something spectacular or interesting with it, then return it to me for auctioning off, with the proceeds of the book auction going to help out Mateo and McHale Shaw, the two little boys who defied the odds doctors gave them at birth and who serve as inspirations to us all. Here's the first try, the email I sent NASA this morn...
