Chess game begins on CTA budget; let your voice be heard
2009-10-15 13:00:00
The CTA has played the opening gambit in what could be a long chess game. There's still much more chess to be played. This game is not over. For openers, the CTA announced last week that it had found $122 million of the $300 million needed to plug the 2010 budget gap. Then Monday, the CTA announced a big fare increase and cuts in service hours, scheduled to take effect Feb. 7, 2010.Now the fun begins. The CTA has clearly stated it wants its operator and other unions to come to the table to negotiate wage cuts. The CTA has announced 1,000 union layoffs due to cuts in service hours. But it says some or all of those jobs could be saved...
10 Greatest Chess Players in History
2009-09-16 15:26:00
There is no doubt that throughout the history of chess there have been many superb players who have reshaped and redefined the way the game is played. This list is an attempt to examine and categorize the greatest of those. No doubt there are many worthy names that could be added, but here is the Top 10 who I believe have rightly earned their places as the greats. The criterion used is based upon a number of factors including dominance over contemporaries, length of career at the top, contributions to chess and individual flair and brilliance. Please note this is not a head to head of who would beat who, as most modern professional players would dominate the forefathers of yesteryear due to developments in Chess Theory, but a historical look at the greats10) Viswanathan AnandViswanathan Anand (pronounced [?i?????n???t???n ??n??nd?], Tamil: ?????????? ??????) (born 11 December 1969) is an Indian chess Grandmaster and the current World Chess Champion.Anand held the FIDE World Chess Ch...
Murders in the Rue Morgue: Play chess online
2009-09-01 20:32:00
I enjoy the precise prose, Marx-free themes, and sense of decency of the pre-modern writers, even though things can get stuffy at times. Murders in the Rue Morgue, sometimes called the "first detective story," begins with a somewhat lengthy and difficult-to-follow discourse (below the fold) on which mental faculties are best tested by checkers in contrast to chess. Poe seems to think that the more constrictive rules of checkers better tests a man's analytic ability than the more varied move options in chess, although comprehending the exact reasoning would require me to think, and it's Saturday. Murder in the Rue Morgue is odd because the focus of the story isn't necessarily the mystery at hand, as the characters involved are barely present, but the inductive/deductive powers of C. Auguste Dupin. The reader can't possibly participate in the story: he's merely along for the ride. Or, the reader isn't given the information or time necessary to make a problem-solving guess and ...

Chinese Chess Is Finally Accessible To Blind And Visually Impaired Persons
2009-05-06 05:30:00
Chinese chess (Xiangqi) is centuries old; some historians date the game back to 400 BC. All this time, blind and other visually disabled persons have been unable to play one of China's most popular games.  But last year, design professor Michael Siu, of Hong Kong Polytechnical University (PolyU), created a Chinese chess set  for blind persons and others with varying levels of visual impairments. The set  has opened up a new sport to millions of vision impaired persons that allows them to be included in a very popular national game.
Little Walter: His Best The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection
2009-03-07 10:00:00
His Best:Little WalterIf you read SML often you probably know that I love harmonica players. And the harmonica player that I love listening to the most is Little Walter. And the Little Walter album that I like listening to the most, is His Best :(Little Walter)The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection. I am serious when I tell you that if I was placed on a desert island, and could only have one album, this might be the album. And I bet someone is wondering how could I pick a Little Walter album over say a Muddy Waters album, or maybe a Howlin' Wolf album. Well part of it may be my mood right now, if I pose this question on another day, I might come up with a different album, but right now this is how I feel.I agree with Robert Gordon's assessment of Little Walter when he said;Marion "Little Walter" Jacobs is perhaps the most influential harmonica player on contemporary blues, and his collection is a great place to start. He was trained by Muddy Waters, but brought a more swinging feel...
NPR Reports on Chess Records Movies
2008-12-06 14:00:00
I heard an interesting report by NPR's Neda Ulaby, which I thought you all would enjoy listening to and or reading. The radio report titled A Hollywood Makeover For Chess Records brings up details about the recent movies about Chess Records, Cadillac Records and Who Do You Love.A couple of the points that I found most interesting was how both movies take some liberties with the facts. One question I had was did Lenored Chess really fool around with some of his female musicians? And what happened to Phil Chess in these movies? I found the following quote by Leonard Chess' son, Marshall, to be very interesting; He says the family's history is distorted in both films. Marshall Chess more or less grew up at Chess Records and worked there before the label was sold in 1969. He went on to become managing director of Rolling Stones Records. He's most upset that the bigger movie, Cadillac Records, cut out his uncle Phil entirely."That's horrible," Chess says. "It's like you make a mo...

FlashChess3.com - Play Online Chess Game

Flashchess3.com on this quick loading flash-based chess board, you’ll be able to put your skills to the test against three different difficulty levels. I fashion myself something of a chess expert, and the AI on this is really amazing. It won’t take it more than 15 seconds to come up with a move, and sometimes its strategizing is better than that of the human mind. Since it loads so quickly, you’ll be able to play this from anywhere at any time.

The Chess King of Atlanta
2008-07-20 20:56:00
I was out until three in the morning last night, which has become kind of a rarity for the Old Man of the Hills here, and had a couple of set-fast beliefs turned on their end. First off, I ended up at the Ballroom Lounge in the basement of the Highland Inn, a place I'd avoided since it opened -- I was certain, despite friends' protestations to the contrary, that I'd hate it, that it would be claustrophobic and awful. Instead, it's spacious, a bit quirky, and really pretty cool. Then I ended up playing a game of drunken chess (like regular chess, except you're drunk) against a friend. Chess is a game that I've always thought you take up when you're tired of life -- the golf of board games. But I was completely wrapped up in the game, found myself thinking the moves through (when I've played chess in the past, it's with all the reserve and subtlety of a suicide bomber), and had a great time (and won). Am I actually a born chess player? Or have I just quieted down so much that ...

Chess Champion for the First Time
2008-05-24 23:11:00
Finally, for the first time in my life, I won the chess tournament recently held in Roxas City, Capiz. The said tournament is participated by several strong players of the province including the last year's champion. My practice and my losts in chess really become fruitful. After losing several chess games in my life, I finally win this one. It's both honor and cause satisfaction. See Mr. Arlo Gilbert [1], as I told you, in our lives you can't lose everytime sometimes you can also win! I want to post the pictures here of the tournament but I'm not that photogenic so I've changed my mind. Maybe after I edit and blur a little my pictures. :D [1] http://bleuken.i.ph/blogs/bleuk-en/blogs/bleuken/2008/05/03/arl-o-gilbert-as-a-coach/

Mound Chess: A Look at Greg Maddux?s Pitch Sequencing
2008-05-08 22:34:00
A game of chess is not won with a single move but rather through the ability to see strikes and counters well in advance. Garry Kasparov, not-so-arguably the best chess player in the world, has the ability to see dozens of moves before they take place. This is not clairvoyance. Instead, it is a skill learned through ...

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INITIATIVE IN CHESS
2008-04-30 05:28:00
In chess, there are two basic principles that must be respected:1.Without blunders, only the attacker can win the game. A game is always won by an attack. As long as your opponent is attacking you are occupied by parrying that attack. 2.Only the player with the initiative can successfully attack! The player that does not have the initiative can often bring forth a sortie, but in order to gin up a successful attack the player must have the initiative.Couple this thinking with the fact that white has an initiative by virtue of the first move. Thus, white is favored to win. He will win if he can hold the initiative. He can lose if he loses the initiative. In many games the initiative changes hands, sometimes it changes often: perhaps because it is not respected; or because both players value it and fight for it.Statistically, White wins 54% of games decided, Black wins 46% of those games. It seems clear that White has an 8% advantage due to the first move! This is the initia...

Strategic Internet Marketing - More Than Just Chess Pieces
2008-04-18 17:00:00
Message on home page: "Our strategic Internet marketing services are designed to help you leverage your resources in a way that maximizes your response while ensuring optimum performance at all times." [Usually supported by a stock photo of chess pieces on a board] Jargon-free translation: "Our Internet marketing services are designed to work." If you've been operating a business website for any length of time, you've probably encountered an example of jargon-infused puffery like the one I've translated above. Perhaps it came to you in a spam email from some company that claimed to take your online success "into the stratosphere." Or perhaps you read it on the home page of a web marketing firm, right above the ubiquitous stock photo of chess pieces on a chess board. But what is "strategic" Internet marketing anyway? If you ask me, it's one word too many, because the first word is a given and therefore completely unnecessary. Strategic marketing is the only kind worth pursuing, o...
