Chicago's NATO protest fizzle

Apparently, there are not many people who oppose the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or the war in Afghanistan. Chicago police estimate that there were less than 2,500 protesters at the largest march on Sunday. Organizers say it was double that number. Even if we give the protest organizers the benefit of the doubt and say... Read more »

The Bell Tolls for the Pop Tax in Chicago (for Now)
2012-05-03 22:51:00
The soda tax has long been the food police’s favorite thin end of the fat wedge. So it’s not surprising that when the City of Chicago went looking for some extra cash, it considered the misguided policy. Yesterday, a city council committee held a hearing on a proposal by Alderman George Cardenas to raise soda taxes by 15 to 35 cents per drink. We hope Kelly “Twinkie Tax” Brownell didn’t get his hopes up, because the council decided not to adopt the drink tax—at least not yet. Chicago already puts Illinois’s maximum sales tax on soft drinks. And now the Chicago Sun-Times has weighed in and said that that maximum sales tax is more than enough “sin” taxing: ... a big tax on sugary drinks isn’t the answer. That’s a nanny-state solution, one that says government must protect us from ourselves, one that doesn’t harness the power of everyday Americans to solve [weight problems] for themselves. When the food activist community is trying harder than ever to convinc...

The ABC's of the 2011-2012 Chicago Blackhawks
2012-05-03 14:08:00
A: Andrew Brunette Brunette came over in the offseason as someone who could add plenty of experience to the Hawks’ third and fourth lines.  He had played for Joel Quenneville before, so it was an easy decision for him to come to Chicago.  Much maligned for being old and slow, Bruno played all over the place.  He scored 12 goals, but was far from an impact player (not that he was expected to be). B: Bolland, Dave The Rat was coming into the season having played a huge role in the Blackhawks’ near incredible comeback against Vancouver in the first round of last year’s playoffs.  This year he scored 19 goals while playing a lot of second and third line center.  He netted seven on the power play, and three goals while shorthanded.  He’s been better, but Bolland had a solid season... Did you know that the management and execution of the City’s garbage collection, snow removal, and recycling programs are segregated by ward?  The Department of Streets and Sanitation operates largely independently from fifty separate depot yards, each responsible for the aforementioned activities within their respective ward boundaries.  This design is archaic and inefficient, to put... Obama’s Chickens Come Back to Poop Over Chicago
2012-04-22 13:45:00
Sad. but sadly far less than shocking, from Chicago Sun-Times: Suspect: I Beat Up White Man Because I Am Mad About Trayvon Martin Case Maywood, Ill. – Alton L. Hayes III, a west suburban man charged with a hate crime, told police he was so upset about the Trayvon Martin case in Florida that he beat up a white man early Tuesday. Hayes and a 15-year-old Chicago boy walked up behind the 19-year-old man victim and pinned his arms to his side, police said. Hayes, 18, then picked up a large tree branch, pointed it at the man and said, “Empty your pockets, white boy.” What say you merchants of hate, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Spike Lee, Eric Holder, Barack Obama and NBC News?    As loathsome as the so-called aforementioned black leadership is,  I generally impressed by the linked article’s comments. I don’t seem to recall any whites claiming that they assaulted a black because they were upset over O. J. Simpson murdering two whites, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronal...
