China Rep Offices, Bankruptcies And The Perils Of Being Chief Representativ
2012-01-26 14:55:00 I know I keep reading how China's economy is just fine, but my firm just keeps getting more inquiries and more work relating to shutting down offices and companies in China. Of those, the most heartbreaking are coming from Chief Representatives of China Representative Offices who are concerned about their own liabilities when their China Rep Office closes. Typically, the Chief Representative tells the Rep Office employees that the Rep Office is going to be shutting down. Naturally enough, the employees ask about their getting paid. The Chief Representative usually tells them not to worry, which causes them to worry more and go to their local government. A local government official then comes by and informs the Chief Representative that he or she is PERSONALLY responsible for paying the Rep Office's employee salaries AND all outstanding taxes. The Chief Representative then contacts my firm and we tell him or her that he or she does indeed run a very real risk of being o...

Indian Chief Election Commissioner Casts Doubts On Online Voting
2011-09-08 07:43:00 In a political environment which is already charged due to the agitation for Jan Lokpal, everyone is either actively participating or has strong opinions towards Government policies . It is imperative that the most basic aspect of democracy must be perfected to accommodate the people who have started taking an interest in Indian Politics. The logical way forward seems to be that the entire voting system should be taken online. This has its benefits as it makes the process easier and more efficient than usual. However, India’s Chief Election Commissioner begs to differ. Mr. S.Y. Quraishi recently remarked that online voting will be a unsafe venture. One of the valid fears that Mr. Quraishi feels is that the anonymity of the web will make it difficult to roll out such a feature in India at the moment. He feels that the government may not always be able to establish the identify the voter. He said, “Technology is not an issue for implementing e-voting. But it is not feasible in ...

Demagogue In Chief Slams Corp. Jets After Spending Stimulus Money on Them?
2011-06-29 19:45:00 -By Warner Todd Huston In his Wednesday presser on the state of the economy President Obama several times attacked those evil rich folks flying about in corporate jets saying that the filthy rich could "afford" higher taxes. But while he spent so much time slamming corporate jets today, back in 2009 the president was pushing a stimulus bill that included tax breaks to corporate jets. In February of 2009, the stimulus package that Obama pushed heavily as the only way to "save" the country included a provision that, as the Associated Press then reported, "sharply reduces the up front tax bill for companies who buy assets like business planes." So, once again we have this president talking out of both...
Former Daley insider takes over as chief of staff for CTA board chair
2011-06-23 14:00:00 After Mayor Rahm Emanuel plucked his own chief of staff out from under his pal Terry Peterson, the CTA's board chairman, Peterson has hired a former Daley insider as a replacement. Call it the city hall revolving door?Joan Coogan, director of former Mayor Richard M. Daley's Office of Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA) , took over as Peterson's chief of staff, reports the Sun-Times. In May, Rahm had hired Theresa Mintle, the former CTA incumbent, as his go-to gal. Coogan in 2009 took over the IGA, which was at the center of the city hall hiring scandal in 2005.Mintle had worked in the Daley administration early in her career, and started her CTA career as the Frank Kruesi's manager of governmental relations....

Will New Chicago Police Chief McCarthy Appoint a Black 1st Deputy?

And McCarthy may score political points with dozens of Black advocacy groups and religious leaders who had been meeting seperately on the issue of Police Chief and were meeting the night before Mayor Elect Emanuel's press conference announcement as they had just decided to have a major press conference that very next day on asking Emanuel to choose between Eugene Williams or Al Wysinger. Where do all of these Black Aldermen, religious, civic...
Ex-Chief Justice of India: Sathya Sai Baba ?dictated my every single judgem
2011-05-04 00:39:00 In The Times of India article - ?Sai Baba, my god, dictated my every single judgment? - TNN | May 1, 2011, 03.22am IST - the former Chief Justice of India, P.N. Bhagwati, makes this extraordinary claim. He says: "As a professional, each time I would sit down to write a judgment at 5 ?o?clock in the morning, I was only writing what my god dictated. Bhagwan held my hand as I put pen to paper" One wonders how the pens of judges the world over ever manage to remain upright .... One may like to pause, then - perhaps with the aid of a soothing Indian tea - just to take in the unexpectness of all this. A Strange Notion: A Judge's Own Guru Is Above The Law One may also wonder what the case if any other judges in India of this or that guru other than Sai Baba (and there are plenty of gurus to more than go around in that land) were to do the same thing. And whether they, like Bhagwati, would also - subscribe to the notion that, since their guru is god dictating to them, that they, ...
On Sathya Sai Baba: Times of India, Ex-Chief Justice Interview. What Judge
2011-05-01 14:14:00 The sort of questions I'd like to be asking ex-Chief Justice of India, P.N. Bhagwati (I'll follow the present spelling), I have put in blue highlight. In his interview just conducted by the Times of India (on which he has long been a director, by the way), Bhagwati, about to head the late Sathya Sai Baba's Central Trust, makes a number of comments which cannot but alienate him from present and former Commonwealth judges, and, indeed, judges, lawyers and citizens far beyond. He says, for example, that for long, in writing his judgements, he has been receiving guidance from Sathya Sai Baba. The account he gives sounds very like automatic writing. If it was not, he needs to have been clear about what he means. Judges are meant to be clear, are they not? He also shows some disconcerting lapses (???) of memory. He clearly say that because Sathya Sai Baba is God, there is no need for investigation of any allegations.

2011-04-25 02:27:00 Naperville, Illinois (April 24, 2011) - Naperville Moms Network announces change of leadership, continued support and development programs for area mothers. Naperville Moms Network, or NMN, broke onto the scene in July of 2009 as an online community for Naperville area moms and quickly gained popularity. Founded by Kelli Thompson, a 29-year-old Florida native, its subheading reads, "Naperville Area Moms Connecting to Support and Empower Each Other In All Aspects Of Life." The fast-growing network has accomplished that, and more. Kelli created the network to provide local moms a place to meet each other online, create and join small-interest groups, post blogs and photos, learn about upcoming community events and activities that may interest them, and facilitate in-person...

Nat'l Teachers Union Chief Steals Reporter's Story for Speech Wit
2011-04-12 17:20:00 -By Warner Todd Huston I guess being the president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) means not having to do your own homework. Just ask AFT President Randi Weingarten. Weingarten was caught using verbatim and without attribution the work of a journalist from New York in a speech she gave a week ago. Usually this is called plagiarism and people get fired for doing it. Apparently, though, the president of a national teachers union... a teachers union... isn't held to the high standard that others (including students her union members supervise) are held to! When a journalist, politician or student uses someone else's words without attribution in a speech or a paper, it's called plagiarism - and it's often...

VIDEO: Interview With Chief Dep. Whip, Congressman Peter Roskam
2011-03-11 19:56:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Illinois Congressman Peter Roskam (R, 6th District) has really climbed the ladder of leadership since the 2010 elections. He went from Congressman in the minority party in DC to the Chief Deputy Whip of the majority Republican Party riding the GOP wave that overtook the Hill last November. Roskam is the go-to man for the budget debate. He handles this like an expert and, with his role of Chief Dep. Whip, is part of the leadership team. But I peg him as one of the best guys on that team where it concerns the budget. Some of the things he's talking about here are already in play, but the one thing I'd like to focus on...
UPDATE: NPR Chief Resigns Under Pressure Because of Video
2011-03-09 20:00:00 -By Warner Todd Huston As of yesterday's debut of James O'Keefe's video showing NPR executives revealing their hatred for Americans while cozying up to enemies of the country by schmoozing with what the execs thought were radical Muslims willing to donate money to NPR, the CEO of NPR has now resigned. Vivian Schiller, the woman responsible for the hashed-up firing of Juan Williams last year, has resigned in the face of pressure from NPR's board. After meetings yesterday evening the board told Schiller that it would be best if she resigned and so she did. Good riddance to bad rubbish. NPR itself did a good job of covering the situation in a series of updates to its The Two-Way blog....
Anthony Batts, Oakland Police Chief, And Fear Being Of Backstabbed
2011-01-21 00:25:00 The advantage of living in Oakland off and on since 1974, and the experience of having worked for two mayors of this town, is that one gets to know a lot of people, and they talk a lot, especially about Oakland City Hall. The topic of the week, aside from Mayor Quan's trip to The White House with San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, is the possible departure of Oakland Police Chief Anthony Batts. Frankly, this blogger can't blame Batts for seeking an escape hatch from the City of Oakland. His police force has been cut down to 656 officers (and it could go lower once the new deficit information hits the streets). The overall civic regard for Oakland's police force is at an all-time low. The Oakland Police Department is looking at a possible Federal takeover (due to issues with its compliance with the consent decree related to The Riders Case). Oh, and, on top of all of that, Oakland now has a mayor in Jean Quan that many Oakland Police officers - those remaining - just don't trust...
Ariz. Shooting Victim Issues Death Threat to Tea Party Chief
2011-01-16 00:38:00 -By Warner Todd Huston One would think that once you were the collateral damage of an assassination attempt, you'd be much less apt to be issuing death threats of your own to people. Sadly, shooting victim J. Eric Fuller was not so sensitive as one might think his experience would make him. At a townhall meeting Saturday, an incensed Fuller issued a death threat to local Tea Party leader Trent Humphries. Fuller is a liberal that has been heard in interviews claiming that Sarah Palin and conservatives are at fault for the Arizona shooting. Fuller was one of those present in front of the grocery store in Tucson when crazed murderer Jared Loughner began indiscriminately shooting at people after his...

William Daley For Chief Of Staff?
2011-01-05 05:59:00 President Barack Obama has other real options to be considered for his new Chief of Staff, like former Labor Secretary Alexis Hermann, Valerie Jarrett, or Donna Brazile as well as others. As we look at the fact women are the majority of registered voters in this country, that t would be a boost to garnering women if a strong woman was in this key position. Former Labor Secretary is not just a capable women, but a woman who as Labor Secretary kept sense of direct communication with rank and file members of the workforce as she governed as Labor Secretary and this would be a plus in President Obama's goals of reconnecting with his constituent base. President Obama could...
President Obama About to Name Another Chicagoan Chief of Staff?
2011-01-03 23:36:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Julianna Goldman of Bloomberg News is reporting that President Obama may be about to name Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's brother, Bill, to become the next White House Chief of Staff. That will make yet another Chicago crony working for the Obama White House. Bill Daley will be joining the ranks of Chicagoans Rahm Emanuel, Valarie Jarrett and several others whom the Obama's worked with in Chicago before Barack became president. Bill Daley, 62, was once the U.S. Commerce Secretary under Bill Clinton and chaired Al Gore's presidential campaign in 2000. Daley co-chaired Obama's transition team as he prepared to take office and also served as an economic adviser. If Daley takes his place as Obama's Chief...
India, Corruption and Sathya Sai Baba and His Chief Servitors
2010-12-27 02:07:00 The person who wrote to me the following apparently comes from Andhra Pradesh, the State in South India where Sathya Sai Baba has his chief ashram in Puttaparthi. They commented on my previous blog: Wikileaks and Indian Troops Atrocities Reports. Sai Baba Fails To ?Clean Up Own Backyard?. In regard to India's endemic corruption, the person speaks of my 'inferring' by some convoluted logic that it parallels the causes for India's many sicknesses. It strikes me that the writer uses the notion "that it (the corruption) parallels" in a systemically misleading way. Surely a more helpful contextualization of the corruption issue to be seen in Sathya Sai Baba and his core servitors is a notion not of 'parallel' but of symptom. This is to say that - apart from the fact that corruption can be found in any social system - many of the Sai Baba-related corruptions are rooted in aspects deep-rooted in the Indian social system. It would, of course, be absurd to say that all the co...

FBI Investigating Obama Confidant and Union Chief Andy Stern?
2010-09-28 21:00:00 -By Warner Todd Huston This is pretty momentous information. According to two people interviewed by federal agents the FBI and the U.S. Labor Dept. are investigating former Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Andy Stern. The two organized labor officials met with federal agents this summer to answer questions about a six-figure book contract that Stern landed in 2006 and his role in approving money to pay the salary of an SEIU leader in California who allegedly performed no work. It should be remembered that Andy Stern has been one of the most frequent visitors to the White House and has served as a close adviser to President Barack Obama. Stern unexpectedly resigned in April as president of one of the...

2010-09-28 17:00:00 -By Warner Todd Huston One might think it would be big news that a Chief Steward for a Local chapter of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is being investigated by the FBI for possible connection to overseas terror networks. Apparently, though, several Chicago news outlets didn't see a reason to add this little fact to their stories. And even if it wasn't big news that the FBI is investigating a union member, one would think that his profession would at least make an appearance somewhere in properly formulated coverage of the story... right? Over the weekend the FBI announced that it was investigating Joseph Iosbaker for possible connections to overseas terror groups. Iosbaker and his wife Stephanie Weiner, both... |
