Kam Gok Yuen in Chinatown, Vancouver

When Lorna and I went to Chinatown Vancouver to buy red dates, we did a little exploration of Chinatown. It was a nice sunny fall day. The Vancouver Chinatown Millennium Gate is the most prominent structure in Chinatown. Lorna told me that the Chinese characters on the gate was written by a famous calligrapher whose is a friend of her.
New Town Bakery and Restaurant in Chinatown, Vancouver
2011-01-18 17:43:00
It seems that calling this restaurant sketchy and dodgy did not deter some of us from showing up for this impromptu chowdown. I made sure that I set the expectations clearly up front with those who responded to my call to join Suanne and I for lunch in the New Town Restaurant in Chinatown. I did not want people to look at me funny for choosing a place like this. I am saying this because I was once here some years ago when I saw needles in the washroom. We also came here after our lunch at Maxim?s to buy some buns and we noticed that some of their customers were down and out (if you know what I mean). So that formed an impression in me that this is not exactly a family restaurant. To me I am no snob when it comes to food. I will go where there is something to learn about even if the food is nothing great. Sorry you gotta take this blog as it is ? warts and all. I don?t usually got to fancy schmancy places. I am just fascinated with the New Town Bakery and Restaurant because it...
Chinatown condo sales, median prices slide over three-year period
2010-12-10 22:23:00
Chinatown's a small neighborhood to begin with, so its not a shock to learn that just 12 condos, townhomes, and single-family homes have sold there since January 1. By comparison, the South Loop has seen more closings than that since Thanksgiving. Chinatown is a condo market, and condo sales and median values were both down in 2010 compared to 2009 and 2008. In 2008, 27 condos sold at a median price of $245,000, according to Redfin's records. In 2009, 19 condos sold at a median price of $223,000. In 2010, seven condos have already sold at a median price of $210,000. One more, a three-bedroom / 1.5-bath listed at $264,900, is under contract; if it closes by December 31,...

Siempre había pensado que los bares eran como cafeterías. La gente va, se sienta, viene un camarero, te pregunta que deseas tomar, y vuelve al poco tiempo con las consumiciones. Al final pides cambio para tabaco o sin más pagas la factura. Probablemente he entrado en muchos suburbios, pero no he frecuentado ninguno. En la ...

Destination Washington DC: Jackey Cafe in Chinatown
2008-05-20 03:30:00
While in Washington DC, I decided to make a trip to Chinatown. Wow, I was completely intrigued. This Chinatown is so different from the New York City one. This Chinatown is so clean and modernized. Unlike the New York City Chinatown, there's no smell of fish and there's no unidentifiable liquids leaking on the floors. There's no loud street vendors or people trying to sell you fake purses or bootleg DVDs. To my surprise, I found a Regals movie theater there and also a Washington Sports Club. There were tons of big name restaurants like Legals Seafood, Fuddruckers, and much more. There was even a Hooters!!!One of the tourist attractions here is this Friendship Arch, which is this traditional Chinese brick gate archway that hovers over the road.Well, it was about lunch time and I wanted to go try out some local Chinese food joint. I came across a Wok n Roll Chinese and Japanese restaurant. This place was pretty cool. According to the sign at the door, it was once the boarding house...

Royal Peacock Hotel in Singapore Chinatown could fetch around $38m
2008-05-09 02:17:00
Royal Peacock Hotel in Singapore Chinatown could fetch around $38m  GOOD LOCATION: The hotel, which opened in 1995, occupies 10 restored shophouses in Keong Saik Road. Room rates are from $105 to $185 a night. — ST PHOTO: EDWIN KOO   THE Royal Peacock Hotel in Chinatown’s Keong Saik Road is likely to be sold soon - with a potential price tag of about $38 million. The owners of the boutique hotel called for expressions of interest, which closed on Wednesday, after attracting at least five bidders. The keen interest underlined rising interest in the hotel sector in Singapore, analysts said. The 74-room hotel’s marketing agent, Cushman & Wakefield, said the property’s guide price is $38 million, or more than $500,000 a room. While the wider property market is quiet, as many buyers and sellers are remaining on the sidelines, the hotel sector offers a different picture. With rising tourist arrivals and room rates, investors are more than happy to pay ‘...

Hello From Toronto - Exploring Chinatown and Kensington
2008-03-21 17:51:00
SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: In all my explorations of Toronto over the last few years I have learned that in addition to numerous world-class sights and attractions, Toronto has many lesser known nooks and crannies that are full of history, interesting stories and anecdotes. One of the best people to learn from about the twists and turns of Toronto's history is Bruce Bell, a well-known author, playwright, actor, standup comedian who is also a passionate historian and has become one of Toronto's most well-recognized history experts. The story of how I met Bruce is also quite intriguing: my brother, who happens to live in Austria, was reading a German travel magazine that was featuring a story about Bruce, so he called me up and said that there is this guy that is doing all these neat walking tours through Toronto and that's how I connected with Bruce - through a European detour. Over the past couple of years I have taken two of his tours, covering the downtown area and featu...

Review: Phnom Penh Restaurant in Vancouver's Chinatown
2008-01-26 20:10:00
Another week of work gone by, and more encounters with Korean students at work! I taught at a high school on the westside this week, and two ESL social studies classes consisted of 50% Korean students. When I mentioned to the class that I had previously taught English in Korea for a year, their immediate reaction was "WOW (throw in a few golf claps)! Do you like Korea?"Ahhh, the joys of teaching Korean students once again. My answer to their question was "I love all countries," haha. Most of them where here studying and living with homestays, some were here with their mothers (which they are still scared to death of) while their "salary-man" fathers are back in the motherland, and some have been living in Vancouver for quite a while. What I find humorous is how these students come over here to learn English, but they end up hanging out with other Koreans, which impedes their ability to practice English 24/7! I even caught a few of them dropping some "18's aka shee-pal's" in class,...

Chinatown light-up gets off to a flying start
2008-01-20 03:36:00
Chinatown light-up gets off to a flying start  CHINATOWN was aglow with lights yesterday after Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong launched the annual Chinese New Year light-up. The highlight of the 90-minute celebration was the release of Kung Ming lanterns by Mr Goh and MPs Zainudin Nordin and Lily Neo. The release of the lanterns is a symbol of good luck. The event also saw a fireworks display and 148 strings of firecrackers go off from the top of People’s Park Complex. A massive lion dance display and dazzling wushu performances kept the crowds, which had thronged Eu Tong Sen Street, cheering with joy. Asked what his wishes for the Chinese New Year were, SM Goh, replying in Mandarin, wished everyone ‘a smooth year ahead blessed with good health’. In line with the Year of the Rat, this year’s street light-up and celebrations will feature, for the first time, Disney icons Mickey and Minnie Mouse. On Location: Chinatown and Lower East Side, NYC
2008-01-09 00:44:00
by Naomi Nevitt While the Lower East Side has savored its fair share of hype over the past few years—from the rebellious beginnings as a skate-punk mecca to its recent emergence as a blue chip design destination—the area south of Delancey has always been somewhat on the cusp of the real action. But with the recent opening of the New Museum, i.e.: the area's new beacon of the arts, the Lower East Side (and its bustling neighbor Chinatown) is undergoing yet another renaissance. The quarter is now being steered by the emerging art scene and is frequently being touted the next Chelsea. Yet, never one to welcome homogeneity—especially the white cube variety—the neighborhood succeeds in preserving its rough-and tumble, under-the-radar persona that makes it a downtown stalwart. James Fuentes LLC At just a year old, wunderkind gallery James Fuentes has pushed the limits of the Lower East Side art scene with his off-the-radar Lower Manhattan storefront and super-hi...
