Inviting friends to church: Ruh-roh!
2009-11-03 22:46:00 Dear Mel, I got to church three times a week. I'm really involved with the youth group at my church. However, I have this group of friends... None of them ever go to church. I'd love to bring them to my youth group, but I don't want to freak them out. What do you think I should do?-Church Girl...
Freedom Baptist Church sued for defamation by former member
2009-10-26 23:33:00 A drill team director is suing his former church for alleged false and defamatory statements that he inappropriately touched one of the youth. Charles Coleman was a drill team director at Freedom Baptist Church of the Greater Chicago Area before resigning- from the position and joining another church in 2008. The following summer, in June of 2009, while Coleman was attending the National Baptist Training Union Conference, he greeted and hugged one of the youth from his old church. Former friends and parishoners then- allegedly confronted Coleman about the incident, stating among other things "The next time you touch one of our kids, we are going to f--k you up." According to the complaint, Coleman did not know what these comments were based on and at a meeting later that month...
CNN's 'Latino in America' and Holy Trinity Catholic Church b
2009-10-22 05:02:00 I have been looking forward to CNN's "Latino in America" for months, but while watching tonight's episode and hearing both sides of the divide in St. Ann, Missouri's Holy Trinity Catholic Church (nicknamed Holy Trinity Hispanic Church), all I could do was shake my head. Neither group seems to be making a great effort to know the other--the Latino side because some are uncomfortable that they aren't fluent in English and the English side because they feel like Latinos should learn English. I disagree with both. They both need to meet in the middle. English is not the official language in the United States, and we're constantly bragging about being a big melting pot but then contradicting ourselves by...
Catholic church in 'stunning' move
2009-10-20 23:59:00 The number of Bingo players could grow sharply as the result of the Vatican's epochal decision today to add another free space to Bingo cards. At press conferences in Rome and London on Tuesday, Vatican officials also announced that any time anyone makes Bingo on 0-67 that the winner will receive an autographed baseball from former White Sox catcher Ron Karkovice, who used to be urged by the announcers to "hit a little bingo," and indeed he was hitting for an average of .067...BINGO! "It's a stunning turn of events," says Lawrence Cunningham, theology professor at Notre Dame University. "At the very least, it takes our mind off the fact that we were never really in the USC game on...

World?s tallest church in Ulm, Germany
2009-09-22 09:05:00 I’m easily drawn to tourist attractions that are the biggest, longest, narrowest or best for some reason or another – so when a friend in Germany raved to me about Ulm’s cathedral (known locally as the Ulmer Münster), I had to see it. It’s recognised (at least by my friend, and by Wikipedia) as the ...

Church of Latter Day Saints sued for "therapeutic negligence"
2009-09-12 00:20:00 A Lincolnshire couple is suing the Church of Latter Day Saints for "therapeutic negligence" related to counseling their minor daughter received from the church. According to the complaint, plaintiffs Brian and Marcy (surname concealed) brought their daughter Karen to therapist Suzanne Daines, also a defendant, for counseling when Karen was 15. During the session, Karen relayed that four years prior she felt that her father would "watch" her inappropriately but the issue was resolved and there had been no similar behavior in the past four years, the complaint states. The complaint further states that the issue was discussed by Brian, Marcy and Karen with their clergy and a former therapist and that it was determined that a report of possible abuse was not required. Still, according to...

United Methodist Church Daycare Sued for Abuse

Wednesday news round up: the church of public housing?
2009-08-26 16:10:00 Photo by Sarah Jane RheeGreensboro North Carolina is all a-twitter over the local housing authority is applying rules on religion. The Fair Housing Act prohibits organizations receiving HUD funds from "engaging in inherently religious activities."In Greensboro, officials have interpreted that to mean that residents can't use common areas for Bible study or a voluntary religious service. What do you think? Is it a violation of residents' freedoms? Or is it ensuring government-owned property isn't used to spread religion?U.S. housing, confidence data points to recovery - WaPo says we're shaking off this recession and housing numbers prove it.Looking to divide the pie more fairly - Philadelphia public schools are considering a measure close to my heart: changing the way we fund...
Fired Church Pastor Refuses to Acknowledge Termination
2009-08-25 23:46:00 Trustees of a church in Maywood filed a complaint today seeking a temporary restraining order against their former pastor because the pastor refuses to acknowledge her termination and has changed the locks on the church doors. Plaintiffs Sam Gadsen, Dorothy Gadsen and Marion Anderson, in their official capacity as trustees of the Alpha Baptist Church of Maywood allege in the complaint that defendant Rev. G. Rozetta Foster did the following: - Attempted to exert unauthorized control of the church and circumvent plaintiffs in their capacity as trustees by placing co-defendant Reginald Godfrey in the position of CEO. - Attempted to remove Marion Anderson and Dorothy Gadsen from their positions even though they were elected to three year terms. - When the removal failed,...
Ida B. Wells says goodbye to historic church
2009-08-18 21:22:00 Photo by Flowery LuzaNormally, I would describe myself as a bit of a goody-two-shoes. I asked my sister the other day how my mom and dad used to punish me when I was a little kid. "You know," she said, "I really can't ever remember you getting in trouble."Me neither. That's why I asked. In high school, I got in trouble once and only once. My friends and I put "Honk if you like Education" on the school marquee on a day we had a substitute. I didn't even get a detention. So it was a bit of a surprise to me on Saturday morning when I realized I was sort of a bad ass....
The Church of Derek Webb
2009-08-17 11:17:00 Over the last few years, one consistent ‘pastoral’ voice in my life has been the music and  lyrics of Derek Webb. Derek used to play with Caedmon’s Call, a band I was introduced to and thoroughly enjoyed during my high school years. Several years back Webb started doing his own solo albums, all of which have been great, but the last three of which have spoken words of encouragement, conviction and compassion into my life. Most of his lyrics these days would be considered too political, too controversial, or too explicit for most churches, he doesn’t seem to be getting invited to many christian concerts or worship services either. But, if he had a church, I’d go to it. I’ve struggled a lot with faith over the last nine years, and amidst that struggle I’ve grown a lot in my awareness of the world, my understanding of the Bible and what Jesus said and did while he walked the earth. I find myself in this mysterious place, trying to reconcile my...

Is the church a safe place to repent?
2009-08-05 04:01:00 The Internet Monk wrote in an article called, Is there a Place to Repent?I Corinthians 6:9-116: 9 Don?t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don?t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people?none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. 11 Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. -Paul the Apostle, First Letter to the CorinthiansHe spoke of how we have heard this scripture stated many times, and how you have heard if you don?t repent of those sins you will not inherit your place in Heaven. What he does say that makes a lot of sense to me is that the church at isn?t to welcoming to those on that rocky road to repentance. Once yo...
How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Westboro Baptist Church
2009-08-04 06:39:00 Westboro Baptist Church is back in Chicago and our good friend Michael Lehet has video and pictures of their shenanigans over at What's a Boy To Do? Personally, I don't fret anymore over the Westboro Baptist Church because in an interview we did in 2008 with Shirley Phelps, she presented us with TWO choices for America: ONE, first imprison and then execute the gays because that's what the Bible says or TWO, give gays all the same rights that every other American enjoys....

Westboro Baptist church of hate set to protest in Chicago
2009-08-01 17:48:00 Photo Credit: Michael Lehet via Flickr The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, KS - best known for picketing US military funerals has set it's sights on Chicago once again with scheduled protests at several synagogues around the city starting Monday morning. Late last year the WBC felt it necessary to bring their particular brand of hatred to the Center on Halsted baring their signs of 'God Hates Fags' 'Fag Xmas' among others. At that time the WBC did not follow through on their promise to protest directly in front of the Center on Halsted, instead they sought refuge in front of the police station located at the corner of Halsted and Addison so they could make a quick getaway. Up to 94% of teens leave Church after high school
2009-08-01 11:35:00 Great news! "Studies show between 64 and 94 percent of Christian teens leave the Church within a few years of graduating high school." Says, who? A bunch of atheists? No. The Church Communication Network ("CCN") says so, in this press release. The real question, here, is: What's wrong with the other 6% of Christian young people, that they don't see the light? In response to having the vast majority of their flock waking up and leaving the church, shortly after graduating from high school, CCN, a satellite and internet provider of training and ministry content to churches, and Focus on the Family, the ultra-conservative religious organization based in Colorado Springs, are holding a "Christian apologetics" seminar for teens called Big Dig, later this month, to try...

The Church Of Lance Armstrong
2009-07-29 00:08:00 Over the past couple of years, I have been sort of a silent surveyor of the emotions people have for Lance Armstrong. You need not go to Austin, Texas for this privilege. Its right here on the internet. While Mr. Armstrong's Twitter account is bludgeoning with over 1.5 million followers, fierce wars are being waged in forums, blogs, news websites, sports commentaries, opinion columns and even video sites like Youtube and Metacafe. I wonder if the numbers of people and the sheer amount of time spent/wasted in these 'word battles' make any sense to a casual observer at all.To give you a small perspective, take Yahoo Sports for example. On stories such as this one in YS, the number of comments from people who were interested in trading and exchanging the war of words on the topic of who was right and who was wrong is easily over 1900. Yes, you read right. One thousand nine hundred comments. Now, if you go through such comments like you slowly flip the pages of a fat book, you can sort...

2009-06-30 18:22:00 Before you leave the sanctuary, make sure you drop some money in that plate. "We like the kind that jingles, but we prefer the money that folds." Does the Doctrine of Penal Substitutionary Atonement Promote Torture?
2009-05-26 18:33:00 Not for the first time have I been perplexed by the Church’s long affair with torture. Church of Scientology facing dissolution in France as members go on trial a
2009-05-26 16:15:00 The Church of Scientology, which many view as a commercial enterprise masquerading as a religion, is in trouble again. While the movement is considered a 'religion' in the USA, many others countries view it as a cult whose sole aim is to separate gullible people from their money by selling quackery and false promises. In France, the cult is now on trial for fraud and practicing 'medicine' without a license.

A CRITIQUE OF THE SO-CALLED "EMERGING" CHURCH
2009-04-12 05:29:00 A CRITIQUE OF THE SO-CALLED "EMERGING" CHURCH By Forrest W. Schultz I have been wanting to read up on the so-called "Emerging" church for a LONG time. I finally got the opportunity via reading the book below. My critique is in the form of a review of this book. Reading about this stuff is sad, but, as always, it is loads of fun to critique when you are a Van Tillian. I can do this not because I am brilliant, because I got the right tool from the thinking of Cornelius Van Til. And, of course, it is God Himself Who deserves to be praised, because without His providence, I would not have encountered the Van Til Perspective and without His providence Van Til would not have seen the principles of the VTP.Sincerely,ForrestAN EXAMINATION OF THE "EMERGING CHURCH":THE POST-CONSERVATIVE EVANGELICAL COMPROMISE WITH POSTMODERNISMA Review of G.L.W. I Feel Like Going To Church - Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down
2009-04-05 10:00:00 Johnny Cash God's Gonna Cut You DownAccording to Wikipedia;"God's Gonna Cut You Down", also known as "Run On", is a traditional folk song which has been recorded by numerous artists representing a variety of genres. The lyrics are a warning to sinners that no matter how hard they try, they will not avoid God's judgment; in the chorus, God Himself tells the narrator of the song to "Go tell that long tongue liar, / go and tell that midnight rider, / tell the rambler, the gambler, the back slider, / tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down", with some versions inserting slight variations in lyrics. The song has, in the past, been modified to fit the boundaries of genres like country, folk, gospel and techno. As "God's Gonna Cut You Down", it was performed by Odetta on Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues (1956) and Johnny Cash on the posthumously released American V: A Hundred Highways (2006). As "Run On", it was recorded, among others, by Elvis Presley. A version featuring vocals by Bil...
