Vegetarianism, the Holocaust and the Myth of Civilization
2009-05-24 08:10:00
By Mark Hand5/23/09Simulposted with Press ActionLierre Keith?s new book The Vegetarian Myth is generating lots of passionate discussion on vegetarian and vegan blogs and message boards. Here are a couple examples of comments recently posted on the Vegans of Color blog:?I was just reading about the book elsewhere. I don?t want to buy it though? I don?t want to support the project. I?ll see if I can get it from my library.??I would be tempted to review it but not if I had to actually support the book by buying it. And I only say tempted because I really wouldn?t want to give this book any more publicity than it already has.?These commenters appear interested in reading The Vegetarian Myth, although they seem more inclined to pick up a copy at a library rather than purchasing one. But does borrowing the book from a library mean you won?t be ?supporting the project??Libraries are more inclined to keep books on their shelves?i.e., not discard them?if they?re getting checked out. And libr...

There was a time when Man the Toolmaker, could be embodied in one man who knew all there was to be known. That guy knew how to make a fire, or a sharp hand held axe rock, and then a spear, and a bow and arrow, some rope, and string. Say there was an Apocalyptic Riot, and we were returned to the

I Give Up: Civilization Is A Bust. Quick, Back To The Caves!
2009-02-04 08:03:00
I'm going to have to assume from now on that the audience I'm blogging for simply hasn't been born yet. So, to the Internet archaeologists of 1000 years from now: I'm sorry, I failed to bring the human race to terms with computers. But just look at what I had to work with! You see, I have a handicap. I don't have Alzheimer's disease. In my time, virtually everyone else had Alzheimer's. That's why they couldn't remember anything that happened before breakfast. Being in a continuous state of having a fresh reboot several times each day, most everybody was quite happy, because they couldn't remember any problems they'd ever had. Everybody was equal, because nobody could keep a train of thought going long enough to learn anything. There was no such thing as history, so every time anybody tried anything, it was always the very first time and the results were a complete surprise, which was talked about briefly and promptly forgotten. Take for instance, the blog post over at ...
Natural Disasters Doomed Early Civilization

The Year of Civilization Begins
2009-01-05 16:22:00
It is time, Sweetie and I have decided, to Civilize the Babies! They don't want to be civilized, and they are fighting it tooth and nail, but we made the decision: they are to be Civilized, without further delay. I proposed that we do that -- Civilize them-- as we were loading them into the car on New Year's Eve to take them on our fun New Year's Eve shopping trips, a shopping trip that now included "trying to find a glass store" because we had to repair the window that Mr F had broken. Before we decided to Civilize the Babies!, one of their hobbies, one of the main things they enjoyed in life, was throwing furniture. It began with the slide they got for their birthday. When they were not sliding on it, they began shoving the slide around. At first, we thought they were trying to slide in new locations, seeing what it was like to slide over there, or slide in the family room instead of the play room. But it wasn't that, or it wasn't entirely that, because they do move t...

The Roles Of Photography In Our Civilization Posted By : Cindy Heller

CARAL SUPE: THE OLDEST CIVILIZATION IN THE AMERICAS
2008-05-28 14:15:00
Location: Peru Length: 12 min. Recent research shows that cities in the New World arose nearly a millennium earlier than previously believed. Radiocarbon dates from the ancient city of Caral, Peru, show that monumental architecture was under construction as early as 2627 B.C., even before ceramics and maize appeared. The site is enormous, with platform mounds (or "pyramids"), sunken circular plazas, and residences. Caral is by far the largest pre-2000 B.C. recorded site in the Andean region and seems to be the model for the urban design followed over four millennia.Watch the video...

Creationists vs. Western Civilization

John Derbyshire of National Review wrote this column on Expelled which is highly critical of the creationist/intelligent design movement. Peak Civilization And The Winter Of Our Disconnect
2008-04-25 11:13:00
by Carolyn Baker To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring. - George SantayanaThe appearance of springtime in North America may be more welcome this year than at anytime in recent history. The winter has been long, cold, and dreary-particularly in the Rust Belt where the devastations of housing foreclosures, unemployment, and the resultant blight have left a trail of human misery and degradation not seen since the Great Depression. Ten percent of the population of Ohio now relies on food stamps while hordes of domestic animals abandoned in foreclosed homes endure long and grotesque deaths from starvation. For countless Americans across the nation, this winter has brought with it something far more distressing than brutal, bone-chilling temperatures-horrific, traumatic revelations that the American dream, neatly packaged and sold for decades, has become their worst possible nightmare. Should they happe...
International Conference of Srivijaya Civilization
2008-04-23 06:11:00
BackgroundIt is the general assumption that Srivijaya was an powerful maritime kingdom that played an important role in the political forum in early Southeast Asia for many centuries, from 7th century to the end of 13th century AD. Just as its sudden appearance not very much is known of its decline, for that matter, the extent of this hegemony especially in Insular Southeast Asia during the height of its power. It influenced many social aspects in the region at that time, such as history of political life, beliefs, culture and economy. The remains of Srivijaya civilization, tangible or intangible are still found up to now in many sites in South East Asia countries. The researched about Sriwijaya is being conducted in each country until nowadays, and it was come out with a long term polemic about the center of this huge kingdom. Several sites were presumed as a center of Srivijaya Kingdom and its supported with many written sources and archaeological evidences, such as Palembang and ...

Barkley calls Wizards "dumbest team in history of civilization"
2008-04-17 01:33:00
NBA star turned TNT basketball analyst Charles Barkley referred to the Washington Wizards as the "dumbest team in the history of civilization," notes Cavaliers Insider, for riling up star Cleveland player LeBron James. The Washington Wizards will (again) play the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the NBA playoffs.Normally I might tend to agree with Barkley's concern but since being "nice guys" hasn't worked for the Wizards in taking down Cleveland in recent postseasons, perhaps a change of approach is in order. Anyway, the only NBA player who could regularly reek unholy vengeance for such slights was Michael Jordan. LeBron James may be great but he's not up to that level just yet.----Relevant link: Cavaliers Insider

Twin Isles - Civilization for the Nintendo DS
2008-04-16 15:48:00
I think I found one of my new favourite games and I can't believe it has taken me this long. Twin Isles is an excellent homebrew game for the Nintendo DS. It has the basic gameplay from the original Civilization (in my opinion). I have added it to my Best Nintendo DS Homebrew list, just after Warcraft Tower Defense. Twin Isles is by far the most commercial feeling game I have played yet from the homebrew community. The graphics are clear, there are sound effects, some decent background music, a tech tree, a dozen or so structure that may be built, in game tips (which can be disabled, and just fun to play. I definitely recommend playing it if you were ever a fan of the Civilization series. The game has a number of great features: Free Play Mode where you can just practice by your self. Versus CPU to challenge a computer opponent. First to 100,000 population or destroy the other island. Scenarios where you have to complete a specific task. i.e. Grow the population to 500 b...

Western Civilization: A Value Worth Saving
2008-04-13 09:08:00
Although I find it preposterous that White people themselves need to be saved from extinction, and cannot figure out any lawful way to so anyway, I think that White Nationalists (WN's) like Jared Taylor do make some interesting points. Taylor, like most WN's is a hardcore conservative, but when he talks about saving White civilization, the values he credits White civilization with are positively liberal. To be sure, I do disagree with the WN contention that Euro Whites created these liberal, free and humanitarian structures due to some unique endowment of their genes, though is it is an interesting argument. At the end of the day, it is not really falsifiable. With US Whites at 64% and dropping, a White majority in the US is probably a defeated dream. But a non-White majority in the US need not be the disaster that WN see it as. Even at 64% White, we still have one of the largest economies on Earth. Further, I feel that US non-Whites for the most part assimilate to the basically W...

Intergalactic Civilizations
2008-04-12 04:03:00
This is how I see ourselves, but everyone else thinks I don't make sense. Perhaps because people live on a local scale while I live on a global scale. I consider that my culture is that of Earth's and my religion is individualized or unspecified. I dislike it when people distinguish themselves with their own country's culture (hence, I once said "f#ck the chinese culture if [that's the way it thinks]" in reference to some ridiculous idea that someone brought up). I also dislike it when people are fixated on their religion without an appreciation to other religions different from their own. And similar to others, I don't like war, but I oppose wars not simply between countries, but wars and conflicts between people. I don't hold any favoritism towards any country, any race, any group of people, because to me, we all live on Earth and so we're the same. What distinguish ourselves from others are our current thoughts, our ideas, our future, but never our ancestors and our ori...
