Change is hard
2012-01-08 13:45:00
Organizational change is hard – like the way a diamond is hard. So, don’t try to change the organization. It’s too big anyway. Instead, focus on changing one person at a time – that’s hard enough. Don’t necessarily take the “one person as a time” too literally, though. You don’t need to completely and utterly have one person won ...
Breaking News: McDaniels to Rejoin Patriots Coaching Staff Immediately
2012-01-07 17:46:00
The New England Patriots will hire former Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels as an offensive assistant this weekend and he will join the coaching staff immediately and help with the offense in the playoffs. McDaniels, who was the St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator this past season, was allowed out of his contract with the NFL club without compensation. He returns to Foxboro after leaving three seasons ago to become head coach in Denver where he was fired after one and half seasons.  McDaniels was formerly the Patriots offensive coordinator when they put up NFL record numbers in 2007. It is expected he will regain the offensive coordinator position for the 2012 season replacing current OC Bill O?Brien who is leaving to take the head coaching job at Penn State University. McDaniels, 35, started in New England a decade ago as a personnel assistant, in 2002 he was a defensive coaching assistant before becoming the quarterbacks coach in 2004.  In 2006 he added offensive...

Miami Dolphins Coaching Search Continues With Packers OC Philbin
2012-01-06 18:01:00
The Miami Dolphins are expected to continue the search for their next head coach with an interview of Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. Philbin has been with the Packers since 2003, initially serving as their assistant offensive line coach for a year. He added responsibility for the tight ends in 2004, then moved up to become the offensive line coach in 2006. Philbin took over as the team's offensive coordinator in 2007, serving in that role for the last five seasons. Since he took over as the Packers' offensive coordinator, the team has never been ranked lower than tenth in points scored and total yards for the season, along with winning the Super Bowl last season. The Dolphins interest in Philbin, and the expected interview, was tweeted by Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: @BobMcGinn Bob McGinn #Packers O-coordiinator Joe Philbin will have another h-coach shot. The #Dolphins will interview Philbin by the weekend. He was in KC Wed. Jan ...

It?s not about you

The first rule to keep in mind about getting what you want is: It’s not about you. How’s that for counter-intuitive. In fact, the more you focus on yourself and trying to get what you want, the more you end up pushing away exactly the thing you’ve been trying to get. A big part of the reason is: If what ...

They will be a person of high integrity, experience, and will have either Midwestern roots or a proven track record of effectively recruiting the Chicago area. Loyola is making significant investments in athletics with the recent opening of the Norville Center for Intercollegiate Athletics and the planned renovations to the Gentile Arena. Part III: Development of a Coaching Philosophy - "Achieving the Vision
2011-02-25 14:00:00
Whether it is a business, a team, or just some individuals' personal goals, we can get buried in information, knowledge, terminology, and jargon and lose sight of what's really important. We sometimes neglect what the real "bottom line" is. As I realized the need for my philosophy to be shorter, I thought of the slogan I used for years, "Play Hard - Play Smart - Play Together."
Part II: Development of a Coaching Philosophy - "Manifesto to Mantra&
2011-02-23 14:00:00
What I've come to learn in coaching is that most of the time when I felt a sense of frustration it was because I was asking players to do something that was beyond what they were capable of doing, or at least something they were incapable of doing, on a regular basis, at that time. This is usually solved by...
Part I: Development of a Coaching Philosophy - "Beginnings"
2011-02-21 14:00:00
Coaches are always looking for the secret to a team's success, and many of them generate long laundry lists of qualities and attributes that they want the team to strive to refine. These values that are most important to them are really the seeds of a coach's philosophy, and if they are tended to properly, the coach can establish a consistent approach to leading his team. When developed with some intention early...
Coaching Staff is to blame for Bears NFC Championship loss to Packers
2011-01-25 17:28:00
Without Jay Cutler for two quarters, or a score in the first three, the Bears were in this game till the end. How did that happen, and why weren't they able to squeak by and secure the win? Do not blame Jay Cutler, the refs, the offense, or the defense; this loss goes on the coaches.

Michigan's coaching fiasco rings familiar
2011-01-09 04:37:00
My initial reaction to the firing of Rich Rodriguez was not one of overwhelming joy. Now, a lot of that was because I felt that RichRod was more or less botching the coaching and recruiting for the Michigan defense, turning a program once reliably robust into a team reliant on outscoring their opponent week-in, week-out. As a Notre Dame fan, hearing that the coach of Michigan is crying at team banquets and blasting Josh Groban at top volume is a good thing....but I knew that crazy ride had to end The real reason to be somewhat sobered, is remembering that just a year ago, this was Notre Dame. If anything, the Irish have had the market cornered on angrily axing would-be saviors of the program after a few years of mediocrity. In these years of tumult, Notre Dame has learned an unwanted lesson that Michigan could be about to learn; that firing a head coach has to be carried out just as carefully as hiring one, because it might have an equal effect on the product on the field
One Ex-Bear Removed From Head Coaching, With Another In Trouble...
2011-01-01 16:00:00
As many of us already know, ex-Bear Mike Singletary was fired by the 49ersSingletary & T. Smith Lock-Horns from his position as head coach (after their loss to St Louis last week).  What made matters worse was a sideline altercation with QB Troy Smith (after Smith threw an interception that look so-bad that a senior citizen could made that catch).Singletary took-over as interim coach in 2008, succeeding former HC Mike Nolan.  Singletary posted a 5-4 record to close the season.  Ownership then Singletary With Ravensretained Mike as HC permanently in 2009 where the team went 8-8 that year.  Despite Singletary's "in-your-face-style" of coaching, ownership felt optimistic about the teams chances this year.  However in the end, Mike's inability to win...

Lovie Smith is Coaching Scared
2010-09-14 05:18:00
The Calvin Johnson non-TD dominated most of the talk after the Bears 19-14 win over the Detroit Lions but it overshadowed one of the most bone-headed coaching decisions in recent memory.  It is beyond me how a head coach could pass up the opportunity to kick the go-ahead field goal with his team trailing by a point.  A lot of people look at that and applaud Lovie Smith and say how he's got "big balls" for making the hard decision and taking a big risk to try to convert a 4th and 1 from the goal line instead of kicking the chip shot field goal to take the lead.  At first glance, that's what it might seem like, but if...
Bears Beat Lions Despite Major Coaching Mistake
2010-09-13 06:02:00
Lovie leaves the field after escaping with a 19-14 win over the Detroit LionsThe Bears' 19-14 win over the Detroit Lions was a really strange game.  The Bears dominated the stat sheet but the Lions led throughout much of the game.  Then the Lions seemingly make the game-defining play only to have the referees pull the rug out from under them.  A win is a win, so the Lovie Hot Seat cools slightly, but from Section 443 where I was sitting, the FIRE LOVIE chants rained down early and often.  (No, I wasn't leading them either!)The entire game could have swung on one critical decision midway through the fourth quarter.  After an amazing play by Lance Briggs, where he perfectly...

2010-09-09 19:20:00
Per the press release I got in my email, and also likely up at Bulls.com somewhere:The Chicago Bulls announced today that Ron Adams, Andy Greer, Rick Brunson and Adrian Griffin have been hired as assistant coaches on Tom Thibodeau's coaching staff.  In addition, Randy Brown has been named Special Assistant to the General Manager and Pete Myers has been named a Scout.  In accordance with club policy, terms of the contracts were not announced. Brunson, 38, a former Bull, returns to Chicago as he makes his transition to the sidelines of the NBA.  In 2009-10, he served as an assistant coach at the University of Hartford.  Prior to his year in Hartford, he spent two seasons at the University of...

In Part I - Private Coaching and Private Club Sports: What Parents Need to Know, we examined the reasoning behind signing your young athlete up at a private club for training and competition and/or hiring a private coach to improve on their abilities. In Part II of this piece I would like take this to the next level and give some basic principles and concepts for you to draw on. The following guidelines can be of immense help in finding such a performance expert (private coach), or a private sports club.
Part I - Private Coaching and Private Club Sports: What Parents Need to Kno
2010-04-13 01:31:00
It has become much more common today for parents of aspiring athletes to seek private "lessons" (coaching), or join private sports clubs, to enhance their child's sports training. Rather than debate the existence of an appropriate age for, or even the importance of, traveling this path, let's discuss the topic from a more objective standpoint. One where we consider the underlying purpose first, and then move forward to detail how best to go about such a task.

Educomp Ventures Into Engineering Entrance Prep – Coaching Booming An
2010-03-26 12:16:00
A few years ago the IITs brought major changes in the way entrance exams were conducted for their admissions. Back then this move was, widely thought of by many experts, to “eradicate” the coaching institute culture in the student community. But when we look at the current day’s engineering entrance exam prep scenario, it is very clear that the eradication failed bigtime. A few months ago we had told you about Educomp (A Delhi based learning solution provider) joining hands with Karnatake Govt. to impart computer aided education in the schools of the state. The same Educomp has now launched a VSAT-based training programme for students that will help them prepare for engineering entrance exams. This engineering entrance exam training programme has been branded as Leap, by Educomp. The company initially plans to open 75 Leap centers all over the country which will gradually open up until the next financial year. These Leap centers will aid them to train the student...

The Latest College Basketball Coaching Rumors
2010-03-25 05:55:00
DePaul is continuing their search for Jerry Wainwright's replacement and has an extensive list of candidates that they are studying. Contrary to a TV report that ran in Chicago last week, Pitt coach Jamie Dixon was never a serious candidate for the job. He is a good friend of DePaul athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto and the two keep in touch but Dixon never was offered the job and he never seriously considered it. UCLA coach Ben Howland did consider the DePaul opening but decided on Tuesday to stay in Westwood where he feels his program is poised for a rebound season after a difficult 2009-10 campaign. Other names that have surfaced in connection with the job include Kansas State...

A bonanza of Bulls coaching search tidbits guest staring Doug Collins
2009-12-28 12:54:00
Per ESPN:The decision to fire head coach Vinny Del Negro has already been made, according to sources with knowledge of the Chicago Bulls' thinking. The fact that the Bulls' front office has not been able to settle on a replacement is the main thing keeping the embattled Del Negro employed, the sources said. There were discussions recently within the organization about having John Paxson, Chicago's executive vice president of basketball operations, take over the team, but Paxson ultimately decided against it. Then, according to sources, Chicago contacted former Bulls coach Doug Collins, a candidate for the job two years ago when Del Negro was hired, but Collins was not interested in coaching the club.''''''The Bulls would prefer not to promote an...

Wynalda interested in Fire's head coaching position
2009-12-12 21:03:00
I've learned that Eric Wynalda, the 2nd all time leading scorer in U.S. National Team history and current co-host of Fox Football Fone-in on FSC, is strongly interested in the Fire's head coaching position.  I would be very surprised if the Fire hired Wynalda, who was notorious for his brashness both on the playing field and in the broadcast booth throughout his career.  That said, I'm currently working on gauging the Fire's interest in Wynalda, who played for the club in 2001.  Going off of Wynalda's reputation, I don't think he would be a good fit for the Fire.  The Fire just parted ways with a tempermental coach in Denis Hamlett and conventional wisdom would suggest that they'll try and...
