When the war ended, all the coal mine whistles blowed
2010-10-13 07:00:00
My father was a coal miner back in the…well, he went into the coal mine when he was 12 years old, and he came out when he was 47. And he worked through the First World War, well he worked, that’s all he ever done, ’till he came to the farm. But he worked through the First World War, but he was down here in the other one. Everything was rationed back there, just like in the Second World War. You had to take sugar, you had to take cornmeal, and a whole bunch of stuff to get other things, you know. And tea and coffee and all that was rationed. But my dad went in when he was 12 years old. ‘Cause it was a big family of them and he had to work. Well, bread was ten cents a loaf. And when you could get a dollar—you couldn’t get a dollar hardly ever—but if you got a dollar you could buy something with it. And you can’t now but whenever you made a dollar, and you’d save to get groceries, well, then you could get stuff; but we baked our br...

Sukanto loses legal battle over major coal mine
2007-09-23 04:21:00
Tycoon Sukanto Tanoto lost his legal battle in the Singapore High Court on Friday against businessman Edwin Soeryadjaya over control of a multibillion dollar coal mine in South Kalimantan. But he did receive one very small consolation; the court ordered Deutsche Bank to pay Sukanto's company S$1,000 for its failure to carry out its pledge to its borrower.Sukanto, as a borrower to the bank, insisted the bank failed to carry out its obligation as the money lender to get his approval before the bank acted to settle its debt. However, the war between the two business tycoons is probably still far from over. Sukanto can appeal the court decision or pursue another lawsuit in Indonesia.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
Is Drywall Maker USG The Canary In The Coal Mine
2007-08-07 15:53:00
Old time miners used to take canaries down into their mineshafts to let them know if the ventilation was bad. Today, the canary very well could be the sales of USG, a major sheetrock provider. The company is not well diversified so their fortunes will be tied directly to new home construction and the price ...

Antidepressants, a Canary in the Coal Mine
2007-06-29 00:39:00
Antidepressants, one of my favorite topics, are once again in the news. I"ve already explored the connection between antidepressants and a number of personality disorders, but the new studies take us in an entirely different direction and only add fuel to the fire. Two studies released today indicate that Infants born to women taking prescription antidepressants during the first trimester of their pregnancies have an increased risk of serious birth defects. At first glance, the results seem chilling. For example:
Do you know the housing canary in a coal mine?
2007-06-26 10:56:00
You know, someone who bought at the peak, in 2005 through this year, as a "can't miss" investment, or someone who owns a collection of negative-cash-flow properties, or someone who is urging you now to either not sell, or maybe even partner with him on some deals? Someone whose home is filled with "Make Money Flipping Houses" books, and who watches "Flip This House" religiously? Or someone who got their real estate license in the past few years? Or the worst one, someone in their twenties whose last real job was working at Best Buy who didn't go to college and who runs around town blabbing that he or she is a "real estate investor"?In other words, and more importantly, do you know the guy who at the very bottom of the housing crash cycle (in 2010 or 2015 or whenever that is) will throw in the towel in disgust and capitulation (at which point HP'ers will know it's safe to buy again).

Gazprom forms power firm with russian coal miner
2007-02-09 23:34:03
OAO Gazprom, the world’s biggest natural-gas producer, will become Russia’s largest coal miner once it completes a deal to pool assets with OAO Siberian Coal Energy Co., also known as SUEK. The agreement, announced yesterday, makes Gazprom the main supplier of fuels to Russian power plants, as the gas monopoly diversifies into the oil, nuclear and coal industries. ?The creation of a new joint venture confirms the fact that SUEK is actually being transferred under the control of state-controlled Gazprom,? Moscow’s Trust Investment Bank said in a note to clients today. President Vladimir Putin said earlier this week that coal should replace gas as the main fuel for Russia’s power plants. Such a shift will let Gazprom sell gas - still sold domestically at regulated prices - to European customers at a premium. Gazprom’s entry into the coal business comes as national utility OAO Unified Energy System is broken up and sold to investors. Link to this article.
Australian Court Blocks Coal Mine on Climate Grounds
2006-12-19 15:12:01
This is a story dating from a couple weeks ago but well worth bringing to attention.A court in New South Wales Australia, has ruled that a proposed coal mine must take into account its impact on climate change in its environmental assessment before being allowed to go forward. The ruling could impact a wide range of Australia's mining, energy and manufacturing industries, as well offer a lesson to Canadian business leaders. The ruling occurred despite the fact that Australia has not ratified Kyoto, and was made on the strength of Australia's existing public interest laws - something that will become an increasing factor as evidence grows about the harmful human impacts of unchecked global warming. Such precedents have already occurred here in Canada as well.Three years ago BC Hydro planned to build the GSX pipeline, an underwater natural gas supply line to run along the floor of the Georgia Strait to Vancouver Island where it would fuel gas powered electricity generation. A fede...
