Just how terrible is college hoops in the city of Chicago?
2012-02-08 16:26:00 By far, the best college basketball team in the state of Illinois right now is a program where most of the people involved with the team want to fire the coach. Speaking of the Illini and Bruce Weber of course. That says a lot about the state of college hoops in the Land of Lincoln... Read more »
Stages of Pulling The All-Nighter For College
2012-02-01 09:00:00 Remember back in your college days right before an exam, or perhaps during the final weeks of class and the big 30 page compare and contrast paper was due? Did you begin preparing for the exam when the professor told you about it? Hells no! Did you begin researching your paper when it was assigned right after mid-terms? Screw that! Nope, you did what everyone else does. Wait until the last friggin? minute, then try to pull an all-nighter to get it all done. It?s a strenuous game of choking back Red Bulls and trying not to give into exhaustion from the huge weekend kegger you went to the night before. That?s okay because you?ve done it before right? OUTSOURCING COLLEGE EDUCATION
2012-01-31 07:43:00 Foreign Policy magazine recently published an eye-opening article about the economic value of an education abroad. What they did was compare the median cost of one year of an American undergraduate education ($9,000 USD) with that of an average international one ($4,000 USD). While money wasn't the only factor explored (there's also the question of quality, of course), the article does point out some rather startling examples, like how even though South Africa's University of Cape Town has a higher QS ranking than The University of Notre Dame, attending the latter is a whopping $32,000 USD more. Incredible! Check out the full piece here.

For-profit college:The slippery slope and student loan debt
2012-01-20 13:41:00 As much as the general public wants to blame for-profit universities for false promises, the people who apply to these schools should shoulder some of the blame. People should look into the school that they apply to before they are crushed by student loans. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is suing local for-profit university... Read more »

Saving Money In College: You Don’t Need that Thing Edition, PART 3
2011-12-27 13:34:00 Still having trouble with saving money in college after the 2 great articles, that we have already posted? Then check out the last article in this series and, maybe this time, you’ll get it right:) With college costing so much, a student needs to take a hard look their expenses and pare away the excesses. The money thus saved can be crucial later. In earlier articles, we discussed doing without a car, and saving on one’s appearance. The following are some thoughts on more places to save. While a computer is almost always a necessity for a student these days, the kind of computer is a matter of discretion. The recommendation here is for a great deal of RAM, and scrimping on everything else. Unless you are in a graphic arts program or music course, forgo the super video high definition and massive sound speakers. What academic users need is to be able to have open programs use is a combination software to display documents in .pdf format, plus word pro...
Saving Money In College: You Don’t Need that Thing Edition, PART 2
2011-12-22 10:10:00 College is hideously expensive today, and the extra costs mount up swiftly. Lab fees, gym fees, books, equipment for science lab courses, parking fees, and heaven knows what else all add to the truly unbelievable cost of a degree. Students need to be comfortable, safe, well-shod, properly clothed, and decently fed, but there are many areas where savings can be realized in the four years of a college career. We addressed one of the most profligate sources of expense in an earlier article, that money hemorrhaging item known as the car. Let us see where we can save some other funds for the future. A student needs a really good haircut at the beginning of the semester. This is crucial for several reasons. Yes, this article is about saving money, but saving also means investing in what will pay off in the future. First, this is your introduction to the other students. They will form an instantaneous impression of you that will remain with them for, literally, ye...
Rain Rain, Go Away... My Poor, Starving, College Students are Here!
2011-12-21 17:00:00 Rain rain, go away.... I feel like all it's done since moving here is rain. We get a brief respite from it for a day or two (of clouds) and then it's back. No wonder there is so much mold down here. This house finally has a real family in it. Yes, the two older kids arrived last night. Being poor, starving college students, all they could talk about, text about and think about was food. The texts started while they were still on the plane;"Do you have lots of food?""No. We have cookies. And milk. But that is for Santa. We have some Ramen noodles though.""Noooooooooo!"*grin*The- drive home made my son insane as I would announce that we still had 5 more miles to go. Still had 2 more miles to go. LOL. All he could do is talk about how hungry he was. (They had not ate all day as he only had $6 in his pocket and didn't want to spend it on an airport sandwich!). In reality, I broke our budget 2 days a...
Saving Money In College: You Don’t Need that Thing Edition
2011-12-20 08:19:00 College and graduate school are so horrifyingly expensive these days that any extra expenditure must be looked at with care. Unless your parents are rolling in money, the cost of tuition is a massive drain on family or personal resources. The money you save now is going to be your cushion for job-hunting later when you graduate. What are the ways we can avoid breaking the bank and ruining ourselves or our families financially? The student car is probably the most expensive and often least useful and indulgent ongoing expense. Unless you have a serious job that requires commuting, this should be a non-negotiable sacrifice. The expenses associated with a car are manifold. There is the purchase price, the interest on any loan, the insurance, the registration, the tags, and regular required inspection. That is before one single gallon of gas or motor oil goes in. Maintenance of a car at college is an immense inconvenience, unless one is a superb mechanic....
THE COLLEGE CONSPIRACY
2011-12-14 18:30:00 According to the National Inflation Association (and some very disturbing numbers), America's higher learning institutions are the biggest scam in U.S. history. A very bold claim to make, we know, but just check out their documentary, which breaks down everything from the current state of inflation to the hyper-inflated student loan bubble, and you might wind up agreeing. Frightening stuff.

Monster.com Targets Students With Monster College. A Boon For Companies?
2011-11-04 08:34:00 After invading the Social Networking circuit, Monster has launched another initiative into India’s Campus Placement Market. Called as Monster College, this is an integrated placement platform, which is aimed at seamlessly connecting colleges, students and companies. Under this noble initiative, Monster will work with educational institutes across the country to help companies make campus recruitment’s possible right from the comfort of their offices. Sanjay Modi, Managing Director, had this to say,”With Monster College, our goal is to convert the art of campus hiring into a science. There is a war of talent and this concept will help companies in saving costs and time. It also eliminates the concept of day zero or day one on college campuses.” The response is great; over 2,400 colleges and 180,000 students across India have registered. Mr. Modi further revealed,”The concept of this integration arose out of Mumbai-based IT company Syntel’s recruiting dr...

Historic Homecoming for GLBT Alumni at Wheaton, an Evangelical College
2011-10-24 22:08:00 Wheaton College in Illinois has been called the Harvard of the evangelicals. Longtime readers of this blog may recall my reports from their theology conferences on the Trinity and spiritual formation. Though at one time I felt nourished by immersion in a community of serious Christian intellectuals, my shifting political sensibilities eventually made me too uncomfortable to return to an environment where non-heteronormative lives were (at best) erased. That's why I was particularly happy to receive the latest Soulforce e-newsletter, which featured a report on OneWheaton, "a community of LGBTQ's and allies at Wheaton". This month, some 600 members took the bold step of attending Wheaton's homecoming weekend as openly queer alumni and allies. Here's an excerpt from the newsletter: "This is a real coming out, being here, being ourselves," said Frances Motiwalla, a 2000 Political Science graduate. "That's what this weekend is all about. This was a reassertion of our whole...

The Upside Down Chair In A Sathya Sai Baba College
2011-08-08 01:59:00 A few times, in moments of fun, I turned a chair upside down, leaving it uncomfortably propped against the window wall that looked on the fields where the strong farmers faced every weather. A traffic of boys on the lookout to do a good deed would turn the chair right side up. When they had departed I inverted it again. And again. Now and then I asked: "Why is it that chair reminds me of the state of the world"? But only one boy .... I said only one ..... probed deeper. He was not from the residential college, ostensibly full of the future leaders of India. Nothing so choice. He was a 'day boy' who lived down at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited colony. Only that one boy ever asked: why IS the chair upside down? I told him that it is to remind me that the world is upside down, and that what is useful and good has been turned upside down, legs kicking in search of Heaven but the head stuck in the ground.

Sathya Sai Baba College Teachers Angry At ?Illegal? Non Payment And Sacking
2011-07-12 12:35:00 News Flash - Today ...... Scarcely a few days pass before there is yet another series of revelations about the Sathya Sai institutions. In the past, Sai Baba devotees have been extremely remiss to speak out about the negative experiences they have had of the various sections of his organization as being e.g., "Baba's Leela", "Swami's Test of our faith", "Bhagavan's Lesson", etc., etc., ...... Anything that is remiss, ugly, cruel and unusual, irregular, and so forth, has long been passed over with a profound sense of psychological denial, or, in other cases, because those who have been outraged have not wanted to cause difficulties to themselves, families or friends. Sai Baba would commonly say - don't criticize, see your own reflection in what you like to criticize. In other words, a teaching which, in certain applications, may have sense, but was repeatedly perverted in a way supportive of cover up, suppression and the climate of fear that attends authoritarian rule. The outc...
Dave Reffett: should I go to music college?
2011-07-05 23:38:00 For today?s column, I have a really good reader question from Tyrone Darnell in Wolf Point, Montana. The question reads, ?Dave, I want to know if going to music school is worth it. I have thought about it but I?m not sure; I might want to take the Hendrix or Dimebag route. My goal is to play heavy metal on the stage. What do you recommend?" This is a great question. When I was younger I had a decision just like this to make. I had been in some bands and had success on the local scene, had played some big venues where I had seen my heroes play such as Motorhead. I had put out an album with and almost got signed with a band that fell apart. We were clueless about how the music business actually worked and were doomed to fail from the start. Then I moved to Denver and started to build a reputation with my then band playing at cool venues all over the city. But still I wanted more.
Personal Savings: My Kid's College or My Retirement?

Staring at them is a stack of unopened and unpaid bills they have to tackle after the couple's finished washing the dishes and putting the kids to bed. When they've paid the last bill, they glance at each other with raised eyebrows because they'd hoped to have enough money left over to save toward their kids' college education. More so is Marcus and Krisha's desire to leave their jobs one day and live their dream of owning a restaurant together....
College Football 77 in 77: #74 NIU Huskies
2011-06-21 20:41:00 From a mid-major standpoint, Northern Illinois University has become "Running Back U." (Leshon Johnson, Garret Wolfe, Michael "the Burner" Turner, Chad Spann). Sure, only Michael Turner is the only one from that group to do anything in the NFL, but these rushers all dominated the collegiate level. NIU will look to keep that running game going in spades this season, with mobile QB Chandler Harnish (although he'll likely need to make more plays with his arm than he did in 2010, the Huskies were 85th in passing last year) with Jasmin Hopkins and Jamal Woble filling in for Spann. It's also a regime change campaign, as Jerry Kill parlayed his record setting 2010 (the Huskies won 11 for the...
College Football 77 in 77: #76 Indiana Hoosiers
2011-06-19 00:25:00 To say that Indiana University is a college basketball haven but at the same time a dead zone for college football is kind of like saying that porn star/stripper/target of Anthony Weiner lust Ginger Lee is a bit skanky; an obvious understatement. There's a serious drought going on in Tom Crean's hoops program, but unfortunately for the gridiron Hoosiers, they've done nothing to pick up the slack and get the fanbase interested in sports. At least they were fun to watch last year. They threw the ball all over the place for big yards, but at the same time their running game and defense was a train wreck. (What else is new in Bloomington?) Oh yeah, the head coach...
College Football 77 in 77: #77 Minnesota Golden Gophers
2011-06-17 22:16:00 At the 2010 Big Ten Tournament, I made a joke about how much I wanted to punch the University of Minnesota mascot, Goldy in the head. I'd love to watch his trademark head swivel around, except in this case put into motion by the force of a right-handed uppercut. Three days before the 2011 BTT, a fan did just that. So when I saw Goldy Gopher again in Indy, I gave him a hug and told him "I feel your pain." Because both the college football and the college basketball program have been dealt swift punches to the head this past year. No more reason to inflict additional pain- they have plenty enough in Dinkytown already. Before being fired,...
