The 2011 Bridgepoint (?) Holiday Bowl from San Diego started off as a defensive battle for both the California Golden Bears and The Texas Longhorns, and ended with the Texas Defense causing Texas to prevail 21 to 10. It’s a generally accepted view that you can’t win a game by turning the ball over more (Read More...)

College Football Traditions

This is a guest article by author James Ross. Readers know James Ross as an avid golfer, but golf is not his only love. He also likes the world of College Football. I asked James what the denizens of his fictitious Prairie Winds Gold Course had to say on the subject. Enjoy….. ?This is the prettiest ...
For love of the game: My continuing journey as a college football fan
2011-10-14 18:50:00
Last week I had the privilege of attending the Michigan @ Northwestern game with my dad and brother, which is always an experience unlike any other. It is an event that it is always somewhat familiar, but never the same, and an experience that has been a part of my life for two-thirds of my... Read more »
College Football 77 in 77: #74 NIU Huskies
2011-06-21 20:41:00
From a mid-major standpoint, Northern Illinois University has become "Running Back U." (Leshon Johnson, Garret Wolfe, Michael "the Burner" Turner, Chad Spann). Sure, only Michael Turner is the only one from that group to do anything in the NFL, but these rushers all dominated the collegiate level. NIU will look to keep that running game going in spades this season, with mobile QB Chandler Harnish (although he'll likely need to make more plays with his arm than he did in 2010, the Huskies were 85th in passing last year) with Jasmin Hopkins and Jamal Woble filling in for Spann. It's also a regime change campaign, as Jerry Kill parlayed his record setting 2010 (the Huskies won 11 for the...
College Football 77 in 77: #76 Indiana Hoosiers
2011-06-19 00:25:00
To say that Indiana University is a college basketball haven but at the same time a dead zone for college football is kind of like saying that porn star/stripper/target of Anthony Weiner lust Ginger Lee is a bit skanky; an obvious understatement. There's a serious drought going on in Tom Crean's hoops program, but unfortunately for the gridiron Hoosiers, they've done nothing to pick up the slack and get the fanbase interested in sports. At least they were fun to watch last year. They threw the ball all over the place for big yards, but at the same time their running game and defense was a train wreck. (What else is new in Bloomington?) Oh yeah, the head coach...
College Football 77 in 77: #77 Minnesota Golden Gophers
2011-06-17 22:16:00
At the 2010 Big Ten Tournament, I made a joke about how much I wanted to punch the University of Minnesota mascot, Goldy in the head. I'd love to watch his trademark head swivel around, except in this case put into motion by the force of a right-handed uppercut. Three days before the 2011 BTT, a fan did just that. So when I saw Goldy Gopher again in Indy, I gave him a hug and told him "I feel your pain." Because both the college football and the college basketball program have been dealt swift punches to the head this past year. No more reason to inflict additional pain- they have plenty enough in Dinkytown already. Before being fired,...
College Football 77 in 77: Introduction
2011-06-17 21:11:00
Welcome to the most ambitious college football project I've taken on in my life, 77 team previews in 77 days, ranking them all and unveiling one per day with #1 leading you right up to kicking off the season on September 3rd. This project was of course inspired by TSB #2 David Kay and his 99 college basketball teams in 99 days. The success of that feature inspired me to try and equal his college sports nerddom. Why 77?...
Door Opening for College Football Playoff with Department of Justice Ruling
2011-05-12 17:43:00
The Department of Justice is currently investigating the BCS, the OPEC of big money sports, and NCAA President Mark Emmert and BCS Director Bill Hancock are doing little more than playing the denial and ignorance game. The Fiesta Bowl's egregious offenses (and the slap-on-the-wrist ruling that followed) have called attention to the horrible corruption of the BCS. And now the Feds are investigating the cartel's possible involvement in anti-trust behavior. This is very much about economics and markets, and less about football. So this article continues first and foremost in the vein of "the dismal science" not the gridiron. You don't need a MBA to understand this, but since I am one, I'm actually really excited about this story...

2011-03-08 01:35:00

The Hall of Fame class will be announced May 11 and the players will be inducted at the College Hall of Fame's Annual Awards Dinner Dec. 6 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. College Football Bowl System Being Investigated on Corruption Charges
2011-01-11 20:29:00
The BCS (or should I say the BcS, or BC$) has been the target of criticism from fans, the media President Barack Obama. There is an overhwelming mandate for a college football playoff system, yet the college football bowl system remains in place. Now a group with political juice is trying to bring a call to action. An inside the beltway political action committee is on the move....
Picking All 35 College Football Bowl Games...Some in a Snarky Fashion
2010-12-18 16:46:00
TSB's leading resident college football and college basketball nerds pick each and every game; often in very snarky fashion. DK=David Kay, PMB= Paul M. Banks Dec. 18 New Mexico Bowl: BYU vs. UTEP, 2 p.m., ESPN (DK) BYU.  The only bowl game in which neither team has a winning record.  What a way to start the bowl season!  I got the Mormons. (PMB) BYU. It's a good thing Brigham Young has about 20,000,000 descendants, because I can't imagine anyone not related to him having even the most remote interest in this game. I'm picking the followers of Joseph Smith as well. uDrove Humanitarian Bowl: Northern Illinois vs. Fresno State, 5:30 p.m., ESPN (DK) Northern Illinois.  Hey, I actually know...

Weekly Vitriol: Money, College Football and the Pampered Athlete
2010-10-28 06:15:00
Apparently there's an epidemic in college football right now. College football players don't have enough money! Oh no! How different that makes them from other college students! You see, after a college goes out and pays for the privilege of having football players come to their school, they aren't providing them with enough walking-around money to satisfy their needs on a day to day basis. Goodness. Gracious. Me.

Best Place to Watch College Football? Notre Dame ranks #2
2010-10-13 16:35:00
I love arguments like these. The latest issue of Sporting News ranks Notre Dame second best among "places to watch college football," as voted on by a panel of 70 former coaches, current coaches and broadcasters (including current Head Coach Brian Kelly and Lou Holtz, as well as Notre Dame alumnus Gerry DiNardo). If you've ever watched ESPN College Gamenight, you know there's nothing objective about Holtz's coverage of ND. But then again, if they had erected a statue and named a gate after me at their stadium, I'd be a media cheerleader too. It also helps that the greatest football movie of all-time, "Rudy" happens to also double as a 110 minute infomercial for the University and football...
Triple Dog Dare: Hawks, college football predictions
2010-10-13 03:29:00

Blackhawks vs. Nashville, 7:30 p.m. CSN Hawks 4, Predators 2. And the Hawks don't even need Arnold Schwarzenegger's help. Marshall vs. Central Florida, 7 p.m. ESPN Thundering Herd 30, Knights 20. Even though MU used to be known as the Boogercats. Washington vs. N.Y. Islanders, 6 p.m. Vs. Capitals 3, Islanders 0. Alex Ovechkin is so good, he might as well play goalie too. Chicago Tough College Football Picks Of the Week 9/4
2010-09-04 04:35:00
Listen here, tough guys. It's that time of the year again. Grab the neighborhood boys, roast some brats, and exchange some paper...get out the chalkboard and line up the names. Time to throw down some cash old school. Nothing like spending your children's lunch money on some college football. So, here's our three picks:
Adopt a college football fan (me)
2010-09-03 00:55:00
USC is out to an early lead.College football season is here and I'm welcoming it with one big "MEH." And for one reason: I went to DePaul and they don't have a football team (or basketball team for that matter). So every fall, I spend my Saturdays outside in the park taking in nature, watching the leaves change, and relaxing as the sun sets. It's awful.I want all of that to change. I'm looking to be adopted by a college football team. Basically, I'm a skeptical college football fan. All of my life I've been much more of a pro sports fan than college. But I've always feel like I've been missing out on something. It's awkward talking with all my friends about...
Illinois' Miami Thomas: the most unlucky man in College Football
2010-08-21 16:35:00
It's hard to find anyone else in college football who's spent a greater percentage of his career on injured reserve than Illinois defensive back Marcus Laron (better known by his nickname Miami, the city he grew up in) Thomas. In the 2009 preseason, Thomas was a projected starter, but he suffered a season-ending injury; a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. In 2008, he got only 62 plays in on the season before tearing the ACL in his right knee, forcing him to miss pretty much the entire year. In 2007, he started one game (vs. Northwestern) as a freshman during Illinois' Rose Bowl "Champaign Campaign." His glory moment came that year during the Illini's historical upset...

On Wednesday night, President Obama presented his State of the Union Address, in which he spoke about the successes and struggles this country has faced in the last year. He also approached a number of issues that he wants the government to work on in the coming 12 months. It appears that one subject the administration will work on this year was left on the cutting room floor....
USC Football: No Norm Chow For Now

It was previously reported that Norm Chow would be joining Lane Kiffin at USC.  Apparently Chow is not interested in moving across town to USC, he will remain at UCLA. Norm Chow declined the chance to switch teams again in Los Angeles’ fierce football rivalry. Chow said Thursday he’ll stay at UCLA for his third season ...

Morrissey big coup for Sun-Times; BCS big joke for college football
2009-12-06 19:36:00
The Bald Truth Once Jay Mariotti's fiefdom, the Sun-Times now is populated by the two columnists (Tribune defector Rick Morrissey and Rick Telander) who ripped Jay a new one - justifiably and almost always entertainingly - at every opportunity.   Anyway, best of everything to Morrissey in his new endeavor. Big score for the Sun-Times; big loss for the Trib. The Balder TruthWhen I hit the button on this post, I officially will be off for a week. And by off, I mean completely off. I will not be blogging or answering e-mail or even watching ESPN. Just need to recharge the old brain and reconnect with my loved ones, so I'm giving up sports and writing for a week. Thanks for being...
