Lesbian Comic: The Legend of Bold Riley (English)
2012-05-18 00:08:00
She has hunted the wildest game and dallied with countless beautiful girls, but still longs to know the world beyond the city wall. Princess Rilavashana SanParite, called Bold Riley, leaves behind her station and sets out to travel through distant lands and find forgotten ruins, fearsome enemies, inscrutable gods, and tragic love. I was brought up on Robert E. Howard's Conan stories. They were so stereotypical - fierce, strong, heavily muscular barbarian swordsman, confronting evil priests and bizarre monsters and bedding wenches of all kinds, that kind of thing. I loved "that kind of thing." I have basically been waiting my entire adult life for someone to write "that kind of thing" starring a lesbian Princess who leaves her home to find adventure, because she can't stop herself, and who confronts gods, creatures, demons and the like. And, of course, beds wenches. Leia Weathington's The Legend of Bold Riley, is, at last, that story. The feeling of "yes, this, this is ex...
Lesbian Comic: she said (English)
2012-05-15 03:27:00
Readers of Okazu frequently see me request more "After the happily-ever-after" manga; stories in which the girl, having gotten the girl, proceeds to make a life with her.  Well, there's a good reason why we don't get that so much. For the presumed male audience who is really only interested in Yuri as fantasy, there's relatively little interest in the building of a real relationship. Take Shizuma and Nagisa out of Miator and their relationship, which is doomed to fail once it hits the real world, is a bore. But, if there's one thing that keeps people from exploring the after the happily-ever-after moment in comics, it's the harsh reality that after happily-ever-after comes, sometimes, not happily, and not ever-after. When the Prince rides off with the Princess, we fade out so we don't have to listen to the Princess wondering why his friends are such losers, or listen to them screaming at their kids. Obviously. Equally, when the girl gets the girl, we often fade out bec...

Yuri Manga: Comic Yuri Hime , March 2012 (???????)
2012-03-19 23:40:00
I am absolutely overwhelmed with work this week (a week I desperately hoped not to be overwhelmed during) so reviews will be thin. My apologies in advance. To start thinner-than-average review week off right, here is a not particularly chunky review of the March 2012 issue of Comic Yuri Hime (???????). ^_^; The new "cover story" is being told in pantomime, with few words. As it is a schoolgirl story with moe designs by Namori, I have already checked out of it and simply do not care what happens. The first story of some note is an absolutely bizarre pastiche by Ohsawa Yayoi, that involves a computer website, two girls and a goat head. I will say no more. Morishama-sensei's "Koibana Valentin"e remains adorable. The balance of older couple (Haha. Older. Like 26) and younger is delightful and never fails to make me smile. Plus, candy and sex. Win."Love Preparation" by Takemiya Jin has left my household with a new phrase "Oppai-o gozaimasu." I wish she hadn't done that. ^_^ In "F...

Yuri Manga: Comic Yuri Hime, January 2012
2012-02-07 00:59:00
Having concluded Fukami Makoto's story about girls and guns in the November issue, the January issue begins inauspiciously with looking in a window at girls getting dressed. This will be the new novel carried in Comic Yuri Hime (???????) and in a mere blink of an eye, I was already uninterested in it. The author will be Namori, creator of Yuri Yuri, so that seals that deal. It's pretty much not for me. The magazine begins with loads of colors pages, this time, asking us to determine which of the 4 Yuri Danshi type we are and suggesting manga based on that. As I am a Yuri Joshi, this pretty much missed the mark entirely for me, but between that, the cover novel and the many pages about Yuru Yuri, it clearly communicated that I am, once again, not their audience. It was with some genuine relief, then, that I found a number of excellent stories within. Kazuma Kowo's "Recalculation" is that moment when you realize that what you thought that the other person thought is not true...

Girly Comic, Volume 3 (English)
2011-12-17 00:30:00
Volume 1 was getting Otra and Winter sorted out as a couple and Volume 2 was them dealing with being a couple...so what on earth could Volume 3 of Girly even be about? That's a darn good question and the book itself had a really hard time getting around to answering it. Volume 3 starts with 4-color pages, that probably took a very, very long time to draw, and the art is actually quite decent. But you know, I don't look at the art in a comic, except as an afterthought. (I know, I know, reading the words first, then looking at the pictures is a really strange way to read a comic, but it's what I do. So sue me.) So the art is sort of wasted on me when the story is focused, basically, on there being no story. Or, no story as far as we, the readers are concerned. There *is* a story of course, and eventually we get around to being told it, then it ends and we all have a good laugh and move on. Volume 3 has some of the best individual comics Josh drew for Girly. I probably laughed ou...
Batwoman Comic, Issues 1-4 (English)
2011-12-15 02:53:00
As a present for being a good girl all year and working hard at my three jobs, I bought myself a tablet as a replacement travel computer. Objecting as I do to Apple's content-censoring decisions, I chose a Samsung Galaxy Tablet, which is now named Tabibito. I spend the first few days getting the hang of the interface, downloading a few apps and rearranging the screen the way I like it. You know, normal stuff. Once I got myself up and running, I loaded up with a bunch of books - first things first. (Over My Dead Body by Nero Wolfe and The Calculus Diaries by Jennifer Ouellette, in case you care.) Then I decided that, if I had the chance, I'd try my hand at reading Batwoman as a digital download. As I've said before, I never was a DC comic reader. And I've been out of American comics for a very long time now. This was as much a way to test out the tablet as to read the comic, but what the heck, while I went through all the steps, I might as well get a review out of it. ^_^ Comi...
Girly Comic, Volume 2 - Girly & Friends (English)
2011-12-06 01:54:00
I'm still making my way through Josh Lesnick's collection of Girly and find myself closing the pages of Volume 2 of the new collection with some reluctance. In Volume 2, Otra and Winter's adventures become more epic, and involve way more people in town than they did previously. In good chapters, this has the effect of giving Cutetown a more 3-D feel. In less good chapters, it feels like a Benny Hill routine. Luckily there are more good than bad chapters. Highlights of volume two are: the rather inexplicable appearance of Collette, Winter's half-sister, the resolution of the Chupacabre story (which turns out to be kind of unpredictably sweet) and the beginning middle and end of HappyCo, the manufacturer of arch-enemies. As I write these down, I'm having a hard time finding things to say about each one...but they were all entertaining when I read them, honest! Well, except for Collette, who I still don't know why she's in the story. Some of the side characters are intriguing...
Once Upon A Time...Or, How to Make a Great LGBT Comic (and Contest!)
2011-12-05 13:46:00
Today I intended to write a review of an indie comic I supported through a crowdsource program. I thought, well, even if it wasn't to my taste, there ought to be some good qualities right? Well...no, there weren't. I was appalled through and through at how utterly sub-par the conception and execution were. Obviously, I won't be reviewing (or even naming) the book, because that wouldn't help anyone. What I can do, though, is talk about why I felt the comic was so underwhelming. Because that can be generalized into a discussion of representation of lesbians and gays in comics and manga. And that is certainly worth discussing. The more I thought about it, the more I thought today we might - together - start to create a tutorial for not only independent comic artists, but also large companies on some things to consider when approaching diversity, and LGBT representation in comics as whole. So, with that, let me talk first about creating a really good story. A really good story do...

Girly Comic, Volume 1 (English)
2011-11-29 22:39:00
After revisiting Cute Wendy, I admit to questioning my faith in the entertainment value of Josh Lesnick's Girly. ^_^ I mean, I liked it loads when it ran online and my original review of the first volume was positive enough to be included as a pull quote on the second volume. But times change and I change and things change.... I'm very glad to say that my opinion of Girly has not changed. I found myself putting other (probably more important) things aside to keep reading this first volume of the new collection, which encompasses both the original Book 1 and 2. Otra and Winter are utterly un-normal, which makes them charming, and their adventures are utterly un-normal enough that one has to actually pay attention to what is going on in order to follow what is going on. In fact, reading Josh's post-volume notes, we realize how much of the apparent randomness and haphazard happenstance is carefully plotted out in advance. For Yuri fans, the real draw here is Otra and Winter. There...
Yuri Manga, Comic Yuri Hime (???????) November 2011
2011-11-22 02:20:00
The The November issue of Comic Yuri Hime (???????) starts off, as it has for the past issues since its rebirth, with a chapter of "Girls Uprising" by Fukami Makoto. In this chapter, the (relatively) happy couple of Sayaka and Chisato are split so Chisato can go play prince to Hyoko's Rapunzel...even though she's not in the tower anymore. Oh, and of course she and Tatsuki were a couple previously, because this entire world only has 6 people in it. /facepalm/ This chapter thoroughly ve-xed me. I would very much like to see one of the many guns mentioned in the story take Chisato out. Unfortunately, this appears to be the last chapter of this story. Both cover art and layout change with the next volume. Meh. In "Fu~Fu," Kinana and Su-chan are about to celebrate their first anniversary together. Kina and Hayase head out to buy some food, when inexplicably (and I mean that sincerely) a strange woman approaches Kinana and tells her that she's fallen in love with her. Kina r...
Cute Wendy Comic (English)
2011-11-18 01:14:00
This summer I contributed to Josh Lesnick's Kickstarter for the publication of his webcomic Girly in a spiffy hardcover, limited edition box set. I did this entirely because he had a premium of an Otra and Winter figurine set and I'm helpless before the offer of relatively obscure webcomic figurines. (I'd be the first one lining up to by figurines of Yuriko and Midori, our Yuricon mascots, but as I can't draw and have no toy industry contacts, it's kind of a non-starter.) In any case, I knew once I saw the figurines, I had to be part of the Kickstarter. Who wouldn't be helpless in the face of this? Okay, fine, lots of people who are not me. Anyway, with my very awesome hardcover limited edition box set and the figurines, I received a copy of Cute Wendy, Josh's side comic to Wendy. Where Wendy followed the adventures of Wendy and her sidekick, Cute Wendy was the product of many hours of anime watching, potato chip eating, video game playing, masturbation and exhausti...
Dolltopia Comic (English)
2011-11-16 02:19:00
Abby Denson's Dolltopia is a light allegory about the plastic dolls we grew up with and what happens when they question their life of plastic conformity and consumerism. I first encountered Dolltopia back in 2008, when Abby gave me a copy of the mini-comic (that's western indie comicspeak for doujinshi) of the series. I was captivated by the idea of toy dolls rebelling against their intended fate, and their desire to be unique and independent. Dolltopia is, as I said, an obvious outsider allegory, that is nonetheless charming for being obvious. Colored brightly in black, white and hot pink, the art speaks of punk roots, and a childhood of cutting and dyeing doll hair. (Which Abby admits to.) For Yuri fans, there is one established girl-doll couple in the series - Candy O and Candy X. They are shown providing emotional support for one another, even in the most stressful times. Honestly, they are a very cute couple. There's also a little guilt-inducing chapter about the way we ...
Yuri Manga: Comic Yuri Hime (???????) September 2011
2011-10-27 01:01:00
The September 2011 issue of Comic Yuri Hime (???????) is filled with many interesting things. And I've read about 5/6ths of them, so I'm going to punt on some of the stories, particularly the novels...it's just been crazy and I really haven't had time to read them. In terms of the manga, I'm actally going to begin at the back of the book with a chapter of Uso Kurata's Yuri Danshi. Hanadera-kun is in ecstasy - he's going to a Yuri-only doujinshi event! Surely there he will see the Yuri behavior he so desires to see, the beautiful and pure love between girls that is Yuri! (Quick digression: I have NO IDEA AT ALL what you guys mean when you write me and tell me you love the "pure love" between girls. I never have and frankly, I don't delve into it too deeply. Love between girls is pretty much just as messy and complicated as love between a girl and a boy or two boys. No clue what you're thinking it's like...) So, imagine his shock when Hanadera-kun realizes that the girls ...

Comic Con 2011 Jeff Fahey, Tony Todd, Mark Hamill On Sushi Girl The Movie
2011-07-25 21:17:00
Sushi Girl is a "grindhouse" style movie best, which this blogger is dying to see, and is best described as a dinner over a naked chic that ends badly. My objective at the Sushi Girl Red Carpet held at Comic Con 2011, was to find out how badly the movie ends! Getting an answer out of Jeff Fahey, Tony Todd, and Mark Hamill was as hard as the abs on its lady star, Cortney Palm. But I did learn that, according to Mark Hamill, Sushi Girl will make Tony Todd a "really big star." Todd plays the lead role, a guy named Duke, who he says has the kind of "switch" in his head such that if you say the wrong thing, he will "just snap," but who, Todd says, is "charming." In other words, Tony Todd plays a lovable sociopath. Unlike the epic, must-see Bellflower movie meetup, this was a standard Red Carpet, which was fine, but the problem was once you got into a talk with, say, Mark Hamill, a PR rep would come by winding her hand as if to say "wrap it up." And while she's doing that...

Yuri Manga: Comic Yuri Hime Rebirth, Volume 1
2011-01-12 22:46:00
And thus, the fourth era of Yuri has begun. Ichijinsha has re-launched Comic Yuri Hime (???????), with an entirely new look, a slightly new feel and a new bimonthly publishing schedule. Gone is the sweet snuggliness of Fujieda Miyabi or Hibiki Reine, gone is the stoic Eiki/Taishi look, gone is the moe-moe of Tsubaki Asu. Comic Yuri Hime Rebirth is heralded with violence and darkness... ...there is something so very, very wrong about this that I immediately loved it. ^_^ The whole experience begins immediately on the cover where, buried in the art, begins a short story by Fukami Makoto (writer of Vertigo, which I reviewed a few months ago), illustrated with slightly more blood than, maybe, strictly necessary, by Kazuaki - a tale of girls shooting each other with guns in sexy and pointless ways. It was great, but then, you know I love stories about homicidally violent women. I laughed like a loon at the first page after the color art page, in which we are trained in the proper a...

W. has been stressed with homework and studying. T. and R. have been stressed with each other. And I? Well, I've been stressed about EVERYTHING.There have been few laughs exchanged with one another. We have been at each other's throats and it's really getting on my last nerve.Dinners around here are a nightmare. I hate planning meals because SOMEONE will always complain about the menu. R. can't sit long enough to eat her food while it's still warm. The boys can't stop being obnoxious and rambunctious. Its enough to make me want to scream. Well, I do scream. A Lot.So last night I sat down, determined to have a nice conversation with my family, while we ate."Mom," said W., "Guess what I'm reading about for school."I took a few guesses and then asked him to tell me."The witch trials!""Very cool!" I said.He talked a little mo...

Image via WikipediaBy BOB ANDELMAN (email) Any book in which Goosebumps author R.L. Stine writes the introduction is gonna be scary. But The Horror! The Horror! Comic Books the Government Didn?t Want You to Read! is a different kind of frightening. It?s about government censorship, federal abuse of the First Amendment, hypocrisy and hype and, frankly, an unwillingness of comic book publishers such as EC in the 1950s to show a little restraint.  --------------Listen to my JIM TROMBETTA interview!-------------- Jim Trombetta?s four-color coffee table book full of blood, gore, science gone awry and nightmarish things that crawl, slither and kill is gratuitous fun now for adults but it also details an era when America was overrun with Communist scare tactics, paranoia, conspiracy theories and a long-since discredited knucklehead named Dr. Frederic Wertham and his book, Seduction of the Innocent. Ah, the good old days. This book ? which I would not at all recommend for youngste...

Lesbian Comic: Batwoman Elegy
2010-10-19 17:27:00
Two years ago, I had the pleasure of a guest review by David Welsh on the issues of Detective Comics in which the Batwoman arc ran. This week I read the collected volume of Batwoman: Elegy by Williams and Rucka for myself and I find that I don't have a substantially different opinion than David did. I was an American comics reader for decades before I discovered manga. However, I was almost exclusively a Marvel reader. Not for any philosophical reason - Marvel series were just more appealing to me. So this was probably the first comic in the Batman world that I had read in more than 30 years. Batwoman Elegy tells the story of Kate Kane, the daughter of soldiers, who has been busted out of West Point and ripped from an exemplary military career for being gay. This section is poignant, as Lt. Dan Choi was consulted. I expect that the conversation Kate had with her C.O. was not unlike the one he had with his. Lost, flailing for purpose, she has a relationship with Renee Montoya (wo...
