Jeff Pak Forever comics: Jedi Red Eye
2009-11-16 19:00:00
Jeff Pak comes through with a two panel comic to create a tension when pinning Jedi and Sith Lord together. I like the crisp clear lines, subtle use of color, and symmetrical composition. The use of white space is really effective in creating an atmosphere of the moment, and I also like the classical depiction of good vs. evil accomplished by the horizontal juxtaposition. Airtel Follows Tata Docomo – Launches Mobile Comics Service
2009-10-20 06:08:00
We reported on how Tata Docomo is bringing Manga comics to Indian mobiles. Now it seems Airtel plans to follow suit with the launch of its comics service on via Airtel live. Airtel  has announced the launch of an entire comics portal on Airtel Live. This service would be GPRS enabled and will provide access to more than 300 Indian and international comic characters — from Popeye to the local Nagaraj. The pricing is also very competitive as customers will be charged Rs.10 per week for 10 comic strips (when compared to Tata docomo’s 20 rupees for one comic), which is inclusive of data charges. This move comes right after Airtel’s alliance with twitter to provide Tweetsms. Seems like Saleem Mobhani’s exit from Hungama.com and his consequent entry into Airtel as the Head of Entertainment has got good backing for  entertainment VAS within Airtel. ‘More than a third of Airtel customers in India have GPRS-enabled handsets and with the mobile becoming the on...

Jeff Pak Forever comics - Up Up & Away
2009-10-13 00:15:00
Another Monday comic by Jeff Pak. This one reminds me of my urge to learn how to physically fly. I know it's possible to do. People once lived like the Earth was flat, and the stars were the heavens. It's never too crazy to think that the impossible could one day be possible. P.S. We're in the midst of collaborating on a Limited G tee so stay tuned for that...will be dope.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------W-hat do you think? Create a profile and comment!~ Max G....

Comics: Jeff Lemire?s ?Sweet Tooth?
2009-09-03 16:08:00
Out now from Vertigo Comics is a new little quirky tale from writer/illustrator Jeff Lemire, Sweet Tooth. To borrow straight from the writers mouth: “SWEET TOOTH is the story Gus, a young boy born with deer-like antlers. He has lived his entire life in total isolation in the woods with his Father. ...
First Marvel Comics...now Captain EO?
2009-09-03 01:55:00
Again, the folks over at Geek Tyrant blow my mind with the gems they find.  According to The Playlist, 'Captain EO' the 3D sci-fi attraction that was produced by George Lucas and starred Michael Jackson, will be returning to Disney Theme Parks:"According to usually reliable Al Lutz on Disney website Miceage, "Captain EO" will indeed return. Rumor goes that it will make its way back to California's Disneyland park in January of 2010. (It has yet to be determined if it will also return to Florida's Epcot, but our bets are on the affirmative.)"Being a total Lucas acolyte, I saw Captain EO at Disney World about a year before the attraction was closed.  It was ok, but really no match...

For those who don't know, when I'm not writing for the REDEYE I am also reviewing comic books on my YouTube Channel: Comic Culture Warrior.  Co-hosted by comic shop vendor Jose Melendez, he and I talk about comics, movies, video games and anything else that we feel like discussing.  This week we had a discussion about the new 'ultimate comics' line from Marvel: I'm gonna warn you now, the language on the show is sometimes inappropriate for younger viewers. You bring up Jeph Loeb and the 'Hulk Red' comic book, and Jose just starts dropping 'f-bombs.' So you hereby forewarned. Now, since no one else had stepped up to claim the mantle, I'm gonna do it here: JOSE AND I...

Comics: beyond capes and tights
2009-08-15 00:39:00
Terry "Doc Midnight" Gant, owner of Third Coast Comics. Photo/Tiffiany TateNot many people think of comic books when they think of the various forms of literature. I know because I will be the first to admit I, for more years than I care to admit, thought comic books were little more than dudes in capes and tights flying around and kicking butt. That's all well and good, but if I want to see dudes in tights, I'm far more likely to go to the ballet, truth be told. So it goes....
Lesbian Comic: Detective Comics
2009-08-12 22:33:00
What a week here at Okazu! Not only did we get to read that breathtaking interview with Nakamura Ching-sensei, but today I have a guest review written by none other than David Welsh of Precocious Curmudgeon. I'm all a-quiver with excitement at today's review. Some weeks ago on Twitter, David mentioned that he had gotten the Detective Comics series with the new Batwoman (zOMG a lipstick lesbian who never has a steady relationship! That's NEVER been done!) and I asked if he'd like to review it for us here at Okazu. This may well be the first mainstream American comic ever reviewed here. History in the making. Anyway, not to delay a moment longer, David, they are all yours...)When I consider comics, the binary that comes most readily to mind is what drives the book. Is it plot, or is it character? I tend to favor character-driven stories, where the events spring from who the characters are, and they couldn't happen in quite the same way to anyone else. The binary is too limiting...
A 2 Minute Set by 23 of Chicago's Best Comics...
2009-08-04 20:47:00
Producer and set-editing guru Elizabeth McQuern put together a new promo for Chicago Underground Comedy this past weekend.  Some of those folks, like Mike Bridenstine and Renee Gauthier are Chicago ex-Pats, but they will still turn up for a set at ChUC when back in town.  It plays like a teaser-trailer, featuring mostly punchlines and audience engagement, but I think the individual clips showcase each comic's style in mere seconds. ...

Women Make Comics...dammit!
2009-07-26 21:46:00
You may remember that, at the end of June, I mentioned that Deb Aoki, editor and writer of manga.about.com, had spearheaded a program to make the point that women and girls not only read and buy, but also make comics, after a particularly bad media backlash about female fans of the Twilight series "invading" San Diego Comic-Con.There are two entirely different issues being addressed by people writing articles on both sides of this discussion. Most of the women seem to be saying that, Twilight and the fans are not the issue - the issue is the serial dismissal that female comics fans have always gotten from the male fans. Partly because of social and emotional retardation and partly because men simply dis women so unconsciously that when women point it out, we're being over-sensitive. Male writers seem to be saying that they aren't dissing "women" in general, just the not "real" fans, the Janie-come-latelys, who they perceive as being only into one thing - obsessed with the mainstre...

This Saturday, June 27, at Jim Hanley's Universe I, Rica Takashima, Abby Denson, Ariel Schrag, JD Glass and a bunch more LGBTQ comics artists, writers, publishers and distributors will be doing a Prism Comics book signing for Gay Pride. Seriously, don't miss it - it's going to be a star-studded event!Deb Aoki, the highly engaging editor and writer of manga.about.com, was on Twitter yesterday, musing about several recently articles in the mass media that were severely demeaning to women planning on attending San Diego Comic Con. These articles implied everything from "women are only coming for cute boy actors" to "women go to get laid, because as we all know, no women are into comics." None of these articles mentioned the many women and girls who draw, read or publish comics. Deb was musing about a "protest t-shirt" against invisibility of women in the comics industry and market. The conversation took on a life of its own and viola! a "Girls Read Comics" project was born. Deb is l...

Yuri Doujinshi, Lesbian Comics and Other Neat Stuff
2009-06-15 20:12:00
Well, the first two event-filled weekends of my event-filled June are over and I thought I'd take a moment to review some stuff I have sitting here that doesn't fit into neat categories and, incidentally, ramble on a bit about related things.Let's start with the concept of Doujinshi. As you can see, we defined this in the Okazu Glossary as: Small-press or self-published works. Doujinshi are sometimes parodies of existing anime, manga, novels, games and even popular celebrities, but are also often original works. In Japan, there is a well-accepted undermarket of these works which often violate copyright as it is understood in the west. Here in the west, we also have doujinshi, which we often refer to as "Indie comics" or sometimes "Comix." Indie, short for Independent, which is shorthand for saying "Marvel and DC aren't hiring." lol Kidding, kidding. Comix are often meant to be alternative, underground or otherwise not for kiddies. The best Indie comics are incredible. Good or bad,...

Comic Book Review: Action Comics #874: New Krypton
2009-02-12 17:45:00
Action Comics #874 paves the way for the new direction of this title in the wake of Superman's departure. It should be interesting to see how reader's react to Superman's exit. For the most part, I have enjoyed the New Krypton story so I expect that Robinson will deliver another dependable read with Action Comics #874. Let's go ahead and hit this review. Creative Team Writer: James Robinson Artist: Pablo Raimondi and Renato Guedes Inks: Pablo Raimondi, Walden Wong and Jose Wilson Magalhaes Story Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Art Rating: 6 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 7 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with Superman being overwhelmed by numerous members of the Kryptonian military guild. Superman rants and screams that they are all crazy to have freed Zod and made him their General. The military men subdue Superman and hold him down to the ground. Some Thoughts on the Economy and the Web Industry and Independent Comics
2009-02-09 13:45:00
I promise that the new webcomic won't take over my whole blog, but temporarily the webcomics medium is on my mind a lot. So I chanced upon this heart-tugging message by Max Cannon, creator of the strip "Red Meat". Now, I adore Red Meat and all, and I agree with many of the points here, but I'd just like to re-assure those of you who are worried that the recession is going to nuke all of your favorite content online. Specifically, neither my website nor my comic pays for itself directly, nor do I expect it to. But it's so cheap, I can go on doing it for a hobby indefinitely. I don't know how it is for anybody else out there, but for me I spring (I think I remember) $15 per year for domain registration and then $10 per month for hosting. Granted, not the luxury package that can handle infinite traffic, but adequate for my needs. Compare my other vices: I blow about $30 per month on coffee (grinding my own for homemade espresso) and $15 per month, tops, on pipe tobacco. Just tre...

Comic Book Review: Action Comics #873: New Krypton
2009-01-21 00:00:00
The end of the New Krypton story is finally here. For the most part, The Revolution has enjoyed this story. Johns and Robinson have done an excellent job handling this multi-title story and making sure that the story is incredibly consistent no matter which writer was handling a specific issue. Many multi-title stories tend to get a bit disjoined and schizophrenic. Not New Krypton. Johns and Robinson clearly spent the time and effort plotting out and drafting a story that would remain consistent between all of the titles impacted by the New Krypton story. I am confident that Johns will deliver a solid ending to the New Krypton story. Let?s do this review for Action Comics #873. Creative Team Writer: Geoff Johns Artist: Pete Woods, Renato Guedes & Wilson Magalhaes Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with General Lane and Lex watching news reports of Supergirl turnin...

The book reads as if that past doesn’t exist–and, of course, it doesn’t anymore–so why dwell ...

Comic Book Review: Action Comics #871: New Krypton
2008-11-13 16:50:00
The Revolution has certainly been intrigued with the beginning of the New Krypton story that is snaking through all the titles of the Superman family. I fully expect Johns to keep the ball rolling with Action Comics #871 and crank out another quality read. The New Krypton story has so much potential and I am interested to see what new twist Johns throws at the reader with this issue. Let?s go ahead and hit this review for Action Comics #871. Creative Team Writer: Geoff Johns Artist: Pete Woods Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with Commander Gor and Lieutenant Mur walking through New York City with a look of disdain for the humans around them. Comic Book Review: Adventure Comics Special #1: New Krypton
2008-11-07 16:45:00
There have been rumors swirling that DC was going to start printing Adventure Comics once again as a regular monthly title. While that remains to be seen, we did get Adventure Comics Special #1 this week. This issue features the Guardian and also has a cameo appearance by a C-list Legionnaire. I have enjoyed the New Krypton story so far so I fully expect Adventure Comics Special #1 to be a quality read. Let?s go ahead and hit this review. Creative Team Writer: James Robinson Artist: Pere Perez Art Rating: 8 Night Girls out of 10 Story Rating: 9 Night Girls out of 10 Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10 Synopsis: We begin with being told that Adventure Comics Special #1 takes place in between pages 53 and 54 of Superman?s Pal, Jimmy Olsen Special #1. Comic Book Review: Detective Comics #849
