BY PJ RANDHAWA Liza Whitacre, a 20-year-old barista and Loyola University student, was killed Wednesday in a tragic cycling accident on Chicago's north side. Whitacre was cycling with a roommate on Damen Avenue, when she attempted to pass between a truck and a CTA bus. Whitacre apparently slipped off her bike and fell underneath the passing truck, according to police....

The lurking beast
2009-08-05 07:40:00
It has been lurking for a while now. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Waiting to catch me unaware. This morning it struck. I was left defenseless. This morning, I had my first asthma attack in two months. Not a bad one, but even as I write this entry, I can feel my breath being short and not getting the same amount of oxygen into my lungs that I normally do. I didn't have my asthma pump with me either. Quite stupid of me actually.  read more &raqu-o;
Cycling with my wife
2009-06-19 07:42:00
I don't really want to turn this into a cycling blog, but so far, it almost looks like that is the direction I'm headed. Don't worry, I'll still keep everyone updated on the gaming and coding in my life, but cycling will now just be a part of my blogging, as much as it is now a part of my life. Including Sunday, I must have done about 60km's on the bicycle this week. Believe me though, compared to some of the people out there, it's nowhere as much as you think. Still, it is an impressive looking number For me at least.  read more &raqu-o;
Endorphins pumping!
2009-05-29 07:47:00
Man, I feel good! Remember earlier this week when I told you that I would cycle to work on Friday? Well, self-fulfilling prophecies aside, I did it, and I feel amazing! I left the house at about 5:35 AM and I arrived safely at my destination at about 6:40AM. Not bad for a 15km cycle. I've taken a shower at the company gym now and I am ready to jump into the day's work. For those geeks out there who feel they need a bit of exercise? Cycling is an amazing, low-impact, cardio-based sport. Might be a bit expensive to jump into, but once you have the basics like a bicycle, a helmet and some safety lights, the road (and sidewalks!) are all yours.
Sick over a weekend... At least there was sport
2009-05-25 08:47:00
I hate being sick. What's worse though, is being sick over the weekend. You get two days that you get to rest, unwind and relax before the rat race for the next week starts again. Now, you end up lying in bed, nose all blocked up, ready to hurl at any moment. Lying down watching Top Gear reruns. At least Jeremy Clarkson makes me laugh... even though it hurts to laugh.  read more &raqu-o;

Cycling along the lakes...and the smell of summer
2008-12-10 14:48:00
Not that long ago, anyone going for a little bicycle ride along the lakes ('Søerne') in Copenhagen, which stretch from Vesterbro, past Nørrebro and all the way over to Osterbro, was greeted by very unfriendly gates and 'no cycling' signs. It looked exactly like this:...obviously, not everyone agreed with the messageIt was one of the most nonsensical cycling restriction in Copenhagen. Not only is are the lakes a great place to cycle, but with two enormously wide paths, one running right alongside the water, the other set about a meter higher set in from the water, there is more than ample enough space for both bicycles and pedestrians. But at long last, the restrictions are being lifted and finally the path along the lakes looks as it should. There are still a couple of fences up towards Osterbro, which I assume will disappear soon (or are being left to 'slow' bicycle traffic).no more barriers or bicycle restrictions!An amusing thing about this (above) picture is it is preci...

Economic Cycling Stimulation

Rich Uncle Sam and his IRS drinking buddies are sending everyone a tax rebate check this June.Oh boy, here they come with more band-aids. "Dude, but did you know I have malaria?!"You see, its like a feedzone in a long hilly road race on a hot hot day.Your water bottles are empty and someone hands you a cold drink after 70 miles of painful work. You go another 10 more, and you're still tired, managing a snail's 10mph pace.Well, turns out the big underlying problem is not thirst, its fatigue! Your urine was a weird shade of brown this morning, arrhythmic heart beats are putting bad techno music to shame, the legs are like powerless twigs in a 90mph gust, and your tongue seems like the drought ridden soil of Somalia.Basically, you are going to die so get off the damn bike already.Or.. its like a thick and mercilessly wrapped handlebar tape to solve your wrists' accumulating problems, when the fundamental fitting technique you used on the bike in the first place was completely flawed...

Cycling and Relationships : A Tough Question
2008-05-30 07:12:00
Suppose : Your new life partner, apple of your eye, but obviously not as crazy as you about cycling, tests your commitment in relationship. One day, in a very serious tone, he or she asks you to drop your passion altogether. Its either him/her or bicycles, not both. Its a one way street.You've finally found a perfect mate after years, but cycling is another thing that keeps you alive. How will you reply and act? Will you do the obvious - say yes and keep riding (hehe) or will you give in, either to your urges or their demands .Many, if not some, may already have gone through this situation. Because lets face it - serious cycling is a lot of investment in time. If you have not realized that by now, I don't know what to tell you. You don't necessarily have to be pro to decide to do every race in the local calender or ride 10,000 miles every year, not including the hours that go in training, preparation, reading cycling blogs and magazines, watching bike races and hunting for new eq...

Safety ideas for night-time cycling
2008-05-29 03:41:00
Most motor vehicle accidents involving cyclists happen at dawn and dusk. The reason for this is that there are more commuters out there on the road at these times. At the same time, the road visibility is far less than during the day, so the chances of being hit are relatively high. I’ve taken the ...

Meet USA Cycling President Mark Abramson
2008-05-27 10:17:00
Picture courtesy : Cycling NewsNow I've seen Mark Abramson a number of times in some of my collegiate Easterns. I was pretty surprised when I learnt that he took over the new role this March (Read this cyclingnews article). I think his personality and passion for the sport will fit very well for the governing body of cycling in this country. Congratulations!I didn't tell many people this but I'll put it out here anyway. Funny resemblance, and sometimes a little scary - When Abramson puts on his sunglasses, he has this uncanny ability to look like Lance Armstrong. You won't tell the difference from the crowd. I've been fooled pretty well on a couple of occasions.
How to save your energy while cycling up a slope
2008-05-27 09:04:00
When I was still studying, I used to visit my buddy, Yong who lived in Balik Pulau. There were many slopes we had to climb with our bicycles. Yong had a way of doing it easily. It is really quite simple. All you have to do is to cycle diagonally to the left and diagonally to the right alternately. The pull of gravity helps to move our bicycles and we need just a little bit of energy to move our two-wheelers forward. If you don’t believe me, you can always do the experiment yourself to prove my claim. At that time, traffic was not heavy as there was hardly any vehicle coming up the hilly road. Hence we cycled up slopes using the above method, saving a lot of our energy. We took our own sweet time to do an uphill job.

Carb Cycling:The Smart Alternative To Low Carb Diets
2008-05-10 01:16:00
As a sports medicine nutritionist, I am concerned about the lack of awareness and confusion people have over the best way to lose weight. In the 1990?s, we were erroneously told that all fat was bad for us. Now, carbs are being blamed for America?s increasing waistline. Even some athletes have fallen into the low-carb trap. I urge you not to make this same mistake. If you want to lose weight, build muscle, have tons of energy, and even improve your skin and sex drive ? you need to eat carbs. It?s true ? carbs are good for you! You just need to know when and how to eat them.First, let?s dispel some myths about low carb diets like the Atkins diet. It is estimated that nearly 60 million Americans have tried to avoid carbohydrate-rich foods, such as bread, pasta and cereal. Even Burger King is cashing in on this trend by selling a bunless burger! Still, the average person?s weight in this country continues to increase.What is going wrong? Low-carb diets do not work long-term because the...

The Pee-Cycling Business
2008-05-10 00:00:00
Urine is the main source of some of the chemical nutrients that have to be removed in sewage treatment plants if they are not to wreck ecosystems downstream. Despite making up only 1 per cent of the volume of waste water, urine contributes about 80 per cent of the nitrogen and 45 per cent of all the phosphate. Peeing into the pan immediately dilutes these chemicals with vast quantities of water, making the removal process unnecessarily inefficient.

Ideas for New Cycling Products : Part 2
2008-05-05 20:43:00
Continued from the past post, Part 1.7. Adaptive Stiffness - Wacky idea. A bike that will adapt its stiffness the more you ride it. Say Sam is a new bicyclist, knows nothing about bikes and goes out an purchases a new road bike model. Initially, for say the first 500-1000 miles, the bike is very compliant and accommodating, hence it is comfortable and he loves it. The more he rides it and perhaps races on it, the more the bicycle's stiffness adapts to his riding patterns. I'm thinking that the material of construction is a "smart" material that detects how the stresses it is subjected to changes as a function of time and then suitably "adapts". A cyclist knowing this, may perhaps be inclined to put more miles to get his bicycle to 'change'. This is the most perfect symbiosis I can think of in any sporting equipment - as a cyclist gets stronger and is able to ride more, the bicycle adapts too, yielding the rider more confidence in sprints and climbs.8. The Smart Bicycle - Oh boy,...
Ideas for New Cycling Products : Part 1
2008-05-05 20:29:00
There's a fair number of people out there who think that the bicycle industry is stagnant. That there is no engineering, no new ideas and not enough, you know that certain something compared to other industries which I don't know how to define. I have come up with some of my own ideas for possible new cycling products/ideas. Some of this may be practical, some over the edge and wacky and some swims in the realm of science fiction (hey, but look what Arthur C. Clarke did for space exploration!!)I haven't gone too much into the technicalities of any because that will defeat the purpose of me writing this. They are simply ideas and I hope they will influence, stimulate or even inspire your own thinking. If you're willing to contribute more, do drop in comments. If you have a winning idea, keep it for the patent office.1. On the go tire inflation/deflation system - A monitoring system mounted on the handlebars detects tire pressure while riding. If pressures are too low and in orde...

Re-cycling Electroporation Cuvettes

If you have ever worked out the price of an electroporation cuvette you will realise that, at several dollars each, they are worth recycling.
