And while I've warmed up to Ubuntu - heck, I even like it at times! - I'm still cold on Gnome. For reasons like this: Such a simple thing! I want to hit F11 and have Emacs open. Gnome's set-up already has slots for starting web browser and terminal, so I'm able to have half of the default key scheme I've had for going on a decade now. F12 starts gnome-terminal and F10 starts Firefox, leaving the F11 key dead like a missing tooth. As you might guess at this point in the whine, try it yourself. No emacs! Changing the command to just plain 'emacs' doesn't work. Restarting Gnome doesn't work. Disabling every single other keyboard shortcut doesn't work. 2009-05-19 17:05:00 I finally upgraded to a new computer. My last new desktop was purchased in November of 2002, which is a long time ago in the computer world. I have done a couple of upgrades, but for the most part it was pretty original. It was a Pentium 4 2.4GHz with 1GB RAM, an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 128MB video card, 160GB hard drive, DVDRW, and that was pretty much it. It didn't even have USB 2.0 on it. That being said, I could still photo edit with it, do some video editing, watch videos, and even play WoW. I sold it for $80 the first day I listed it in the Buy 'n' Sell. The New Machine I am quite impressed so far with my Studio Slim. I found it used in my city for only $400 so getting a bit of a deal was even a better find for me. Anyhow, here are the specs. Yes, we've all dropped this anvil before, myself included (in only my second post on this site!), but we need to keep dropping it again and again. So here's a few thoughts to add to the points raised: 1. The problem of cross-distro compatibility. To add to that point: Big business needs to meet some actual Linux users and watch them for a day. For instance, I run Slackware, so packages made for my system are few and far. That doesn't bother me in the least. I regularly grab Debian DEB and Red Hat RPM packages and convert them. I get source tarballs an compile them. If something needs a library, I'll find it soon enough on my own. What I'm saying is, Linux users require much less hand-holding than the users of other platforms. Make it for any Linux system in any form, and we'll handle it from there. 3. Hardware support.
