Dessert Delights gum: Didn't Violet Beauregarde teach us anything?
2012-01-25 06:06:00 When I was at the dentist last week, the hygienist asked whether I wanted chocolate mint polish. Chocolate mint polish? I’m at the dentist; I haven’t just finished a filling meal. No, I don’t want chocolate mint polish. Are you crazy? I politely declined with an “ick” sound. Eventually, though, it did lead us to... Read more »
Palm Sugar Jello (Agar-Agar Gula Melaka)
2012-01-08 16:00:00 I made this Palm Sugar Jello (Agar-agar Gula Melaka) for a Christmas party of Malaysian and Singaporean friends. The theme of food is Malaysian food. The party is on Boxing day and my boys had asked me to go shopping in the morning. I made the Agar-agar Gula Melaka on Christmas day so that I can have time to go shopping and have food to bring for the party. Gula Melaka or palm sugar has a unique fragrance to it that cannot be substituted with other type of sugar. You can find gula Melaka at Golden Summit on Westminster Hwy (across Richmond Public Market). Agar-agar can be found in most Asian groceries store.

Adonia Tea House in Kerrisdale, Vancouver
2011-12-19 16:00:00 Polly and I went to Adonia Tea House for another high tea. We enjoyed the mini high tea at The Secret Garden Tea that we want to try more. Driving past the area, we would not have figured that Adona is a tea house. From the earthy tone building and a name like Adonia, we would have thought that this is a Greek restaurant.

SAY WORD! | ARE KIDS EATING DESSERT FOR BREAKFAST?
2011-12-09 22:15:00 Being one to LOVE our cereal followed by our cereal milk, we kind of knew it, but this report by the Enviornmental Working Group solidifies the fact that most children's cereal contains a lot of sugar! It's not until it's contextualized with hightlight such as: "One serving of Honey Smacks has more sugar than a Twinkie." and... "One cup of any of 44 children?s cereals ? including Honey Nut Cheerios, Apple Jacks, and Cap?n Crunch ? contains more sugar than 3 Chips Ahoy! cookies." That one begins to realize the ramification of what this all means especially with childhood obesity...
Beijing: Fish Tray and Dessert
2011-12-05 16:00:00 After a nap in the afternoon from a long tiring flight, I was refreshed and ready for more food adventures. Ben wanted me to rest some more but I was just too excited. I did not come all the way to Beijing to just sleep! Ben brought me to the Oriental Mall at the south end of Wangfujing for dinner. It was a good idea going there because there are so many restaurants and all of them look so good to me. And they were all packed with customers which tells me that the food must be good. It was so hard to decide ... Sichuanese? Mala Pot? Hairy Crabs? Macau? Cantonese? Ben wanted me to choose one but I don't know. I want to try every single one!

Muscovado Sugar Pumpkin and Apple Pecan Crumble
2011-11-22 11:43:00 The trees have shed their leaves and a thick carpet in hues of burgundy red, rust orange and apple-yellows lie under my feet. They crinkle beneath my battered running shoes as I run along the gravel path towards the stream, shimmering in the early morning sun rays. Taking a seat on the... Steal this restaurant's dessert idea for Thanksgiving
2011-11-16 20:21:00 For my money–especially when you’ve snagged one of their ubiquitous coupons, Sweet Tomatoes is the best buffet restaurant around. With the restaurant’s vast landscape of fresh veggies and soups–some even heart-healthy, your meal can be as good-for-you as you choose. Still, who can eat there and not have dessert? (obviously, not me) For dinner, Sweet... Read more »
Honey Roasted Cardamom Apple and Brown Butter Streusel Crostata
2011-11-15 22:32:00 I?ve led a life of a gypsy for a large part of my years. Together with my family, our wanderlust took us from Cairo to Bali, from Colombo to Kuwait from Houston to Zanzibar. Macau Vanilla Custard Tart
2011-10-24 16:00:00 Complete Disclosure: This post is based on a complimentary newly published book for review. These Macau Vanilla Custard Tart are wonderful treats for tea time. The aroma of vanilla perfumed the whole kitchen when these were baked in the oven. This recipe is from a new culinary and traveloque book by Mary Kate Tate and Nate Tate called Feeding the Dragon. We get a lot of newly published books for review offer but I normally decline the offer. But this book caught my eye because it's a traveloque through China.

World's Easiest Dessert, I Promise.
2011-05-29 04:57:00 Long time, no see? Thanks again for the emails--it's really nice to know that if I ever went truly missing that you'd all send out the Navy Seals to come find me. Makes me feel appreciated! I have another post in the works for later this week but for now I thought I'd share with you the excitement I'm feeling over discovering the world's easiest dessert. I know that's so hyperbolic but truly it is the easiest--just you wait and see. It comes from Apartment Therapy's Kitchn Blog which I faithfully follow and it's banana ice cream with only one--count it one--ingredient. Bananas. Yup, bananas and only bananas. All you do is freeze some bananas (they were on sale this week so I grabbed a dozen or so and popped them directly into the freezer) then peel them (that's important). Then puree them into ice cream in your food processor until they're the proper consistency--something similar to soft serve ice cream which you can then let ripen in the freezer if you want it ...

Chocolate Cream
2011-01-16 18:00:00 For dessert, Cecile made a Creme Au Chocolat or Chocolate Cream in the Caring Place Community Kitchen. This is like chocolate pudding. The Chocolate Cream did not turn out as desired due to excessive cornstarch added which made it looked lumpy and not smooth. Nevertheless, this is a simple recipe with just 3 ingredients. The trick is to add in the right amount of cornstarch to get the right consistency.

Fiadone, A Corsican Dessert & A Giveaway
2010-11-02 14:45:00 I realize that I never posted a recap of my BlogHer Food experience and although work being the primary reason, well...I really don't have another reason. Many bloggers were doing such a good job at putting into words all the feelings experienced during that weekend that I commented on theirs instead of writing mine. I did go to BlogHer Food with some goals such as deliberately meeting some folks to see if my first online impressions matched my second in real life ones but also to let the unexpected guide me to meet new faces or take part in amazing conversations. That's how I met Michael (deliciously devilish), and Stephen (super talented photog), told Aida Mollenkamp I digged her shoes of all things, had an Oprah moment in the conference hotel bathroom with Tami and Jeanne and finally crushed hard on this little firecracker of a woman, Georgia Pelligrini. And I also digged her boots. No I don't have a foot fetish, I just have major crushes on strong women, marrying beauty and f...
