In this South Arm Seniors Kitchen, Colleen introduced yet another new ingredient for dessert. The dessert is Baked Plantains. Plantain cannot be consumed raw. It is used for cooking. When buying plantain, look for those with darken skin which indicate that it's ripe. Colleen had a hard time finding ripe plantain when she went groceries shopping for the kitchen.

Rum Cake Recipe
2012-04-25 15:26:00
Moist Rich Rum Cake Company is coming! Now there?s a reason to make dessert. A box yellow cake fancied up creates a cake rich in flavor and pretty as a picture! Back in the storage closet I have a Bundt pan that I save for special occasions? or just when I can THINK of some way to use it. This is perfection. Cake serves 12 Cake ingredients: 1 c chopped or walnuts 1 (18 ½ oz.) yellow cake mix 1 (3 ¾ oz.) package Jell-O vanilla instant pudding & pie filling 4 eggs ½ c cold water ½ c vegetable oil ½ c rum Glaze ingredients: 1 stick butter ¼ c water ½ c dark rum 1 c sugar Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour 10? tube pan or a 12 c Bundt pan. Sprinkle nuts over the bottom of pan. Mix all cake ingredients together, and pour batter over the nuts. Bake 1 hour. Cool. Slide a knife down side to ease the cake out, then invert onto a serving plate. Prick top in several places (so that the glaze, when applied, goes down into cake). Drizzle and smoot...

Marketplace IGA Bistro on West Broadway, Vancouver
2012-03-25 16:00:00
It's ladies' meet again with Polly. We did not have a plan of where to go. We just drove along west Broadway to look for a place to hang out because we remembered seeing a lot of places that we can go during our way back on our previous cake meet . But now that we want to look out for a place, we just can't find one.
Black Forest Pavlova: Quark, Cherries, Kirsch & Chocolate
2012-03-21 11:49:00
?Life is uncertain.  Eat dessert first.?  ~Ernestine Ulmer. And if I may complement this piece of prudent wisdom ?? start with a pavlova!? Because after you have tasted this true piece of heaven, whatever may come after that will just be consolation in the form of dessert. I can... [Read the rest of this post on my website]

Mexican Flan
2012-03-09 16:00:00
Minoo asked me to demonstrate the Japanese Purin, a kind of custard for dessert along Lez Mexican dishes. I thought Mexican dishes and Japanese dessert does not jive. So, I looked up from the internet a Mexican Flan recipe instead. The Mexican Flan is more dense than the Japanese Purin. Nevertheless, it's a great dessert to go along the Mexican theme.
Uprising Breads Bakery on West Broadway, Vancouver
2012-03-02 16:00:00
Polly and I were able to resume our cake meet after a month of break since the winter break. Polly had been busy at work since the beginning of the year. It's been a while we did not go for sweet treats. So, we went to Uprising Breads Bakery on West Broadway to satisfy our sweet tooth. Street meter parking is available along west Broadway. We noticed that the meter parking is strictly enforced because we saw a parking enforcement officer going around checking the meter and issuing ticket for those who violated the parking.

Quarkkeulchen with Cranberries and a Cinnamon Blueberry Compote - A German
2012-02-08 09:46:00
The icy grip of winter holds us firmly. Just as I was thinking we were going to get the mildest winter in years, things took a turn and we are now facing the coldest winter in decades. It totally amazes me how we are at the mercy of Mother Nature. The temperatures have dropped drastically and... [Read the rest of this post on my website]
Yeh?s Bakery Curry Pastry (ga li jao)
2012-02-03 04:05:00
As a food blogger I sometimes get caught up in the excitement of new restaurant openings, which happens enough in NY to always keep you on your toes.  As a result, occasionally the value of writing about old places is overlooked.  What’s more valuable than a tried and true place or product that my family ...
Dessert Delights gum: Didn't Violet Beauregarde teach us anything?
2012-01-25 06:06:00
When I was at the dentist last week, the hygienist asked whether I wanted chocolate mint polish. Chocolate mint polish? I’m at the dentist; I haven’t just finished a filling meal. No, I don’t want chocolate mint polish. Are you crazy? I politely declined with an “ick” sound. Eventually, though, it did lead us to... Read more »
Palm Sugar Jello (Agar-Agar Gula Melaka)
2012-01-08 16:00:00
I made this Palm Sugar Jello (Agar-agar Gula Melaka) for a Christmas party of Malaysian and Singaporean friends. The theme of food is Malaysian food. The party is on Boxing day and my boys had asked me to go shopping in the morning. I made the Agar-agar Gula Melaka on Christmas day so that I can have time to go shopping and have food to bring for the party. Gula Melaka or palm sugar has a unique fragrance to it that cannot be substituted with other type of sugar. You can find gula Melaka at Golden Summit on Westminster Hwy (across Richmond Public Market). Agar-agar can be found in most Asian groceries store.
Adonia Tea House in Kerrisdale, Vancouver
2011-12-19 16:00:00
Polly and I went to Adonia Tea House for another high tea. We enjoyed the mini high tea at The Secret Garden Tea that we want to try more. Driving past the area, we would not have figured that Adona is a tea house. From the earthy tone building and a name like Adonia, we would have thought that this is a Greek restaurant.

SAY WORD! | ARE KIDS EATING DESSERT FOR BREAKFAST?
2011-12-09 22:15:00
Being one to LOVE our cereal followed by our cereal milk, we kind of knew it, but this report by the Enviornmental Working Group solidifies the fact that most children's cereal contains a lot of sugar! It's not until it's contextualized with hightlight such as: "One serving of Honey Smacks has more sugar than a Twinkie." and... "One cup of any of 44 children?s cereals ? including Honey Nut Cheerios, Apple Jacks, and Cap?n Crunch ? contains more sugar than 3 Chips Ahoy! cookies." That one begins to realize the ramification of what this all means especially with childhood obesity...
Beijing: Fish Tray and Dessert
2011-12-05 16:00:00
After a nap in the afternoon from a long tiring flight, I was refreshed and ready for more food adventures. Ben wanted me to rest some more but I was just too excited. I did not come all the way to Beijing to just sleep! Ben brought me to the Oriental Mall at the south end of Wangfujing for dinner. It was a good idea going there because there are so many restaurants and all of them look so good to me. And they were all packed with customers which tells me that the food must be good. It was so hard to decide ... Sichuanese? Mala Pot? Hairy Crabs? Macau? Cantonese? Ben wanted me to choose one but I don't know. I want to try every single one!
Spiced Advocaat Custard

25 days till Christmas. Can you believe it? I say that every year, don?t I? I have a feeling it creeps up just a tad bit earlier each year. Not that I am unprepared but somehow I manage to block out all signs of Christmas, of which they first begin to appear at the markets as early as... [Read the rest of this post on my website]

Muscovado Sugar Pumpkin and Apple Pecan Crumble

Steal this restaurant's dessert idea for Thanksgiving
2011-11-16 20:21:00
For my money–especially when you’ve snagged one of their ubiquitous coupons, Sweet Tomatoes is the best buffet restaurant around. With the restaurant’s vast landscape of fresh veggies and soups–some even heart-healthy, your meal can be as good-for-you as you choose. Still, who can eat there and not have dessert? (obviously, not me) For dinner, Sweet... Read more »

Macau Vanilla Custard Tart
2011-10-24 16:00:00
Complete Disclosure: This post is based on a complimentary newly published book for review. These Macau Vanilla Custard Tart are wonderful treats for tea time. The aroma of vanilla perfumed the whole kitchen when these were baked in the oven. This recipe is from a new culinary and traveloque book by Mary Kate Tate and Nate Tate called Feeding the Dragon. We get a lot of newly published books for review offer but I normally decline the offer. But this book caught my eye because it's a traveloque through China.

World's Easiest Dessert, I Promise.
2011-05-29 04:57:00
Long time, no see? Thanks again for the emails--it's really nice to know that if I ever went truly missing that you'd all send out the Navy Seals to come find me. Makes me feel appreciated! I have another post in the works for later this week but for now I thought I'd share with you the excitement I'm feeling over discovering the world's easiest dessert. I know that's so hyperbolic but truly it is the easiest--just you wait and see. It comes from Apartment Therapy's Kitchn Blog which I faithfully follow and it's banana ice cream with only one--count it one--ingredient. Bananas. Yup, bananas and only bananas. All you do is freeze some bananas (they were on sale this week so I grabbed a dozen or so and popped them directly into the freezer) then peel them (that's important).  Then puree them into ice cream in your food processor until they're the proper consistency--something similar to soft serve ice cream which you can then let ripen in the freezer if you want it ...
