Bon Appetit's Choice for Thanksgiving Dinner
2009-10-27 02:29:00
Do you want to come to my house for Thanksgiving dinner?  Well it's not really my house but I live at Prairie Grass Cafe more than anywhere else.  It is where my family is going to spend the holiday! I'm cooking for my mom. George and I are going to make sure our dinner rocks.  All joking aside, I want her to be proud of me.   What I like best about Thanksgiving is just how grateful people are on that day.  They appreciate that someone else has cooked for them.  That someone else has made the effort to cook the turkey so it's moist and juicy on the inside and crispy skin on the outside.  They appreciate that the mashed...
Seville: A Slow Day Before the elBulli Dinner
2009-09-23 04:42:00
Brunch was at hotel recommended restaurant called Al Alcantina. This is located around the central square in Seville historic city center. We had a table outside the restaurant. Our waitress was really friendly and helpful. No bread here ... they served us those thingy above. It was rock hard and definitely on the dry side. We took a couple and then left it alone. The waitress recommended the Ensaladilla La Alcantina which she said was the prize winner of the Best Classic Tapas in the 2003 Seville Fair of Tapas. Sure, we said ... it was worth a try. ?8.70 is how much it costs. It was creamy, served cold and refreshing -- absolutely marvelous. We had never had these before. I think it is made with mayo with potatoes and some vegetables. The puzzling thing is how could this have been classified as tapas? So I did some research and indeed it is considered as SPANISH tapas despite the Russian word in the name.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner
2009-09-21 02:52:00
We have two OFB contest winners to announce! MWEIMER won the Duchesne Cup Cup-a-joe contest for an OFB mug. The actual Duchesne Cup final saw Team A win 9-5... MWeimer's guess of Team A winning 7-3 was the closest. Second, thanks to all the OFB readers who submitted photos and stories about their favorite hockey sweaters. It was a tough choice, but our winner is TEKA and her Andrew Gordon Hershey Bears jersey. Gordon's been having a terrific camp/preseason, and we wonder if Teka has been diligently wearing Gordon's sweater; Teka's sweater may be Andrew Gordon's lucky charm:[Gordon's] first pro hat trick? I was wearing the jersey unpersonalized and wavering as to whether I was going to get Beagle or Gordon on the back (that night pretty much sealed it). First game after personalization? His second hat trick as a pro. Ridiculous comeback from behind by the Bears, GWG scored by Gordon? Jersey was inside out, leading the rally. Gordo getting the AHL Player of the Month award? Yup,...
Homemade Mushroom Pizza for Dinner
2009-09-21 00:22:00
Happiness can be to spend a day in the woods and arrive home again in the afternoon with baskets filled with wild mushrooms. I am a mushroom hunter and never ever have I seen so many different varieties in colors, shapes and sizes. Now I have more porcinis (penny buns), yellow chanterelles and shrimp mushrooms than I can possibly eat in a year. So, what type of food did we have for dinner yesterday? The answer is, of course, inevitable - it had to be mushroom pizza. Make and bake a large pizza with lots of sliced mushrooms on it is a pleasant thing. PIZZA DOUGH RECIPE: * 2 teaspoons dry yeast * 2 pinches salt * 280 ml warm water (40-45°C/104-113°F) * 360 grams high-gluten flour * 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil FOR THE PIZZA TOPPING: * 1500 ml fresh wild mushrooms, cleaned and sliced * 2 onions * 1 green or red bell pepper * 150 grams smoked ham * 100 - 200 ml chopped parsley * butter * 1 teaspoon salt * ½ teaspoon black pepper * 100 ml Heinz chili sauce * 2-3...

Progressive Insurance Just Bought Me Dinner
2009-08-14 22:59:00
I just saved $35 that I was about to put on my credit card with a five-minute phone call to Progressive auto insurance. I even changed a poopy diaper while I was doing it, which makes it the first time I have earned money while doing that since my high school babysitting days. The reason I called Progressive was to ask them why, since my old car becomes cheaper to replace every single day, my auto insurance premium doesn't go down every time I renew. Think about it -- if I bought a new, more expensive car, the premium would certainly go up. I bought my car for $12,000, and it say right on Progressive's site that it's now...
Homecoming Dinner For Euna Lee & Laura Ling
2009-08-05 04:46:00
Over his first 200 days in office, the thing I've learned most from watching President Obama is his ability to delegate. This is my biggest weakness in the kitchen. Coming up the ranks as a chef, I was always able to "Figure It Out." So as I took charge, my mantra became "Figure It Out." It's a failing mantra of a weak leader. As I watched Euna Lee and Laura Ling board the plane out of North Korea, and back to their families...3 things dawned on me:Barack Obama is a fantastic leaderHe understands the fine art of delegationWhen Bill Clinton thinks with his big head, instead of his small head, there's no one better...

Slow Cooker Dinner Kits: The Fastest Way To Cook A Real Meal

Seven Reasons Why Beef Is Not Ready For The Dinner Table
2009-06-15 22:59:00
Despite its many advocates, whenever I buy some beef and try it, I always end up going back to chicken. Chicken has what I want, and beef doesn't. The latest releases of beef got my hopes up, but I was again disappointed. Now, don't get me wrong. I like beef and I was one of the first people in my family to try some - I was even eating beef decades ago! And I have a tattoo of a cow on my back! But I think, for most diners, beef isn't ready for the dinner table, and here's why: 1) Too many cuts. Should I get loin, tenderloin, sirloin? Ribs, T-bones, tripe, tongue? Consumers are confused by all these choices; they want a wing, a drumstick, a breast, and a thigh in a bucket. 2) Lack of recipe support. Nobody knows how to cook it, except for those geeky elitist specialists who went to chef school. 3) Too complicated for Joe Sixpack. You have to cook it to a certain temperature, or else you could get some foodborne illness like "Campylobacter jejuni" or "Salmonella" or "E.Coli". L...

Wedding Rehearsal Dinner Games
2009-04-25 04:53:00
Wedding rehearsal dinners are a time to relax, calm down and enjoy a quiet evening before the big event the next day. But adding some fun and games into the rehearsal dinner isn't such a bad idea. It's a great way to help everyone let off some steam, calm down and enjoy each other. If you're planning a sit-down formal dinner, fun games and activities can still be on the menu. In fact, if a formal dinner is part of the plans, having some interesting activities on the agenda is not only a good idea, but also an excellent one. There's been a lot of planning, and a lot of stress and the wedding party and close friends and family will welcome the opportunity to have a little fun.The success or failure of any games or activities largely depends not just on the planning but your venue. If you're having a sit-down dinner in a restaurant, try to get a private room. Then a myriad of fun activities can be planned, such as "pin the veil on the bride", in which blindfolded guests spin around...

Beef: It's What's For Dinner Part 3

You'll want to stop in then for details on how to win one of 3 copies of 'The Healthy Beef Cookbook' and a $100 gift card to make your own healthy beef recipe.Today's recipe is Balsamic Marinated Steak & Asparagus. I loved the dual use of the marinade for both the steak and the asparagus. It really brought to two together and made this more of a special meal rather than a usual weeknight dinner.Balsamic-Marinated Steak & AsparagusMarinade time: 15 minutes to 2 hoursTotal recipe time: 25 minutesMakes 4 servingsIngredients: 1. 4 beef round (sirloin) tip side steaks, cut 1 inch thick (about 8 ounces each) 2. 1 pound fresh asparagus 3. 1/2 teaspoon salt 4. 1/8 teaspoon pepper Marinade: 1. 2/3 cup prepared balsamic vinaigrette 2. 2 tablespoons Dijon-style mustardInstructions 1. Beef: It's What's For Dinner Part 2
2009-03-24 05:00:00
Easy Steak DianeThe second recipe in my Beef Week set is something I really love; Steak Diane. Using a smaller, leaner cut and adding more veggies to the plate is the perfect way to keep this meal healthy without losing any flavor. The sauce was perfect and although I wasn't able to fine the medallions called for, the still lean sirloin steak worked very well here. The steak was fork-tender and the seasonings right on. Yes, the kids all loved it and several of their growing tummies needed refills.A note on steak doneness; when I was in culinary school we were taught to check for doneness in several ways. The most common is to use a thermometer to make sure the internal temperature of the meat is correct before serving. We also learned how to check by 'feel'. Although I still do it this way, I recommend using a thermometer for safety reasons. The way that meat looks inside is not always an indicator of proper doneness; a piece of beef can look 'done' and still be under temp and,...

Ancho Chili Rubbed Roast - that beautiful dark color is not burn - it's the delicious rub. It's 'Beef Week' here at Cooking with Anne, but not like you may be thinking. Be sure to stay tuned all week long for your chance to win one of 3 copies of The Healthy Beef Cookbook and a $100 gift card so you can make your own fabulous beef dinners.I bet you're thinking what I've always thought; "Beef can't be good for you, no matter what." Well, I have been delightfully proven wrong. Consider this: A skinless chicken breast has 3 grams of fat and a skinless chicken thigh has 9.2 grams of fat. There are 29 cuts of beef that fall within the 3 gram to 9.2 gram fat range. No ... really. Go on and check it out for yourself! Amazing, isn't it?And, if you want to know more about eating beef and your health (beyond just the fat label) check out Healthy Eatin...

Sunday Dinner: BBQ-Fried Chicken
2009-02-22 14:56:00
This photo is one of the little one's plates - I always cut the tenders from the chicken breasts as they are easier for tiny hands to grasp. This week's Sunday Dinner is a combination of things my family loves. Declan (our 9 year-old son) could probably live on barbecue sauce; he puts it on almost everything. The rest of the family is crazy about fried chicken so I put the two together and it was a hit.I was able to find boneless, skinless chicken breasts at Valley Farm this week for $1.99 a pound - hard to beat these days - and along with homemade breadcrumbs (I never, ever buy them) from a leftover French batard I had, this was quite the frugal dinner.BBQ-Fried Chicken Smashed Potatoes Steamed BroccoliCarrot CupcakesBBQ-Fried ChickenServes 4The larger crumb on these makes them crunchier but can be harder to work with. Be sure to press the breadcrumbs onto the chicken well before frying.4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves - pounded or cut to even thickness1/2 cup barbecue sa...

Conservatives? Dinner with Obama
2009-01-15 22:18:00
When I heard that the president-elect had dined earlier this week with a number of leading conservatives, it seemed to confirm an impression I had formed of Barack Obama during the Democratic primaries: He reminds me of those liberal activists I encountered in college, those who would come to hear visiting conservative speakers, ask questions in ...
Obama has Dinner with One Conservative And Three (At Best) Centrists
2009-01-14 13:04:00
This would be laughable, were it not so very tragic. Ben Smith: The president-elect tonight is having dinner with some ideological adversaries: four of the most widely-read conservative columnists. He’s dining at the Chevy Chase home of Washington Post columnist George Will with the Post’s Charles Krauthammer and the New York Times’s David Brooks and William Kristol. All three wrote, at times, both kind and scathing things about Obama, though Kristol in particular pushed sharp attack lines against him in the waning days of the race. So, he collects four fairly widely read people, all of which are labeled by the left as ‘conservatives’, and yet the majority of them demonstrably have been spending the last several years, each tilting center-left, and it’s supposed to be this great sign that Obama is making great bipartisan effort? Sorry, no sale. George Will is, as I’ve stated here several times, utterly useless.    The last twenty years or...

Dinner Party Disaster!
2009-01-07 08:56:00
My man wants to have more dinner parties this year at our apartment in Malta, all good and well for him but major stress for me! I have to stress about making the food (we hardly have any good pots pans etc here!) keeping the guests happy and having everything look nice! The problem is that we don't have nice plates or bowls for serving. The plates are white with horrendous blue designs on them and the only big bowls we have are plastic!Totally shit right??? For a man this is probably no problem, who cares about the plates? Unfortunately my brain doesn't work like that and wish we had some nice white plates and interesting serving bowls...Well, maybe i will go see if i can find a catering shop with plain white items and if we ever had to move apartments then the owner would just have to buy them from us or something because those blue plates need to be put in a box in a dark cupboard!

Sunday Dinner: Chuck Roast
2009-01-04 20:59:00
Chuck RoastPotatoesCarrotsGravyGreen- Salad with Tri-Colored PeppersDinner RollsI do believe chuck roast is one of the finest foods known to man. It fits my new 'slow' outlook on life and is well worth the wait. It absolutely takes me home - simple, delicious and hearty. I was able to pick up a boneless chuck pot roast for $1.99 a pound yesterday. That's a huge savings over what they normally cost, and right now I was very grateful for that find. Chuck comes from the shoulder area of a steer and gets more exercise than the nether regions of the animal, so it can be tough if not cooked properly. Chuck benefits from a long slow roast in liquid, also known as braising. Add vegetables toward the end of cooking time for a one-pot meal you can't go wrong making.Chuck Roast and VegetablesServes 8 (or in our case, 9!)1 4-pound boneless chuck pot roast2 tablespoons oil6 cloves garlic - chopped2 teaspoons kosher salt1 teaspoon large grind pepperherbs such as thyme or rosemary - as desired...
