We Preview the DOCTOR WHO Christmas Special: The Doctor, The Widow and The
2011-12-22 22:39:00
Every since the return of DOCTOR WHO in 2005, we have been given a bright, gaily wrapped Christmas present in the form of a special DOCTOR WHO episode celebrating the holiday season.  In 2005, there was “The Christmas Invasion”; in 2006, there was “The Runaway Bride”; in 2007, there was “Voyage of the Damned”; in 2008, there was “The Next Doctor”; in 2009 there was “The End of Time”; in 2010, there was “A Christmas Carol” and this year, it is “The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe.”   Just like last year’s whimsical look at the meaning of Christmas in “A Christmas Carol,” this year’s episode is another chance to travel back into our childhoods and revisit a time when life was simpler, more colorful and full of magic.    In 1938, after a young widow (Claire Skinner) comes to the aid of The Doctor (Matt Smith), he promises her a Christmas wish.  Three years later, as the widow escapes into the country with her two children, seeking refuge f...

Doctor Who, Season 6, Episode 2 Recap
2011-05-02 00:49:00
The Season 6, Episode 2 of Doctor Who was entitled “Day of the Moon”. As we last left the Doctor in the previous recap, he and companions Amy, Rory and River Song journeyed back to 1969 after an Apollo astronaut killed an older version of the Doctor. Of course, the current Time Lord is unaware of this event. The TARDIS lands inside the Oval Office where President Richard Nixon is briefing a former FBI agent, Canton Delaware III about strange phone calls he gets every night from a little girl, claiming to be attacked by a spaceman. After a brush with the Secret Service, the Doctor, companions and Canton take the TARDIS to a deserted warehouse near Cape Canaveral to find the girl. River and Rory discover tunnels that run across the entire planet and some alien technology. Amy tells the Doctor she?s pregnant, then shoots somebody in an Apollo spacesuit, who turns out to be the little girl. Confused? Well, even the Doctor is taken a back as the aliens they are threatened by ...
Some Doctor Who Fans Need A Better Defense For Their Show
2011-04-28 17:45:00
Ratings.Appreciation Indexes. The word "millions".I strangely used one, or all three of these types of answers in a blog post on someone else's site who got pissed off with all of the attention that last Harry Potter film received. That blog post however was about the money people put towards fantasy films, it was not about the Harry Potter films themselves. Stupid as the three answers are as to why a film franchise or television franchise doesn't suck, they are seemingly the most common defenses against any criticism. Some Doctor Who fans are no different. Some people would believe that after reading my article that I am simply someone who has moved on from the show. This is true. I have moved on.The...
Why The BBC Should Cancel Doctor Who
2011-04-26 06:09:00
(I have made two attempts to explain why this show should be put to rest. This will be my last attempt to do so.)Before I go on as to why I believe Doctor Who should be canceled, I should let it be known that I actually liked a few episodes of the new series. As anyone who actively watches a show with any kind of sense knows, a television show has good moments and bad moments. Doctor Who fans who watch the show with a passion understand this fact well. By the end of the 1980's during the show's original run, Doctor Who had begun to look worn out and no longer seemed to have the fire that made it...
Doctor Who Season 6 Premier Review
2011-04-24 13:53:00
Last night?s premier of Doctor Who season 6 was pretty bizarre, to say the least. The good Doctor (Matt Smith) had season 5 regulars newlyweds Any (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill), along with River Song (Alex Kingston) meet him somewhere in Southwestern America. They received invites delivered in blue envelopes, each which are numbered. Another is also invited, Canton Delaware, an elderly man who comes bring a large can of gasoline. While enjoying a picnic, the Doctor tells them about going to visit space in 1969. Amy notices a somebody looking on from a distance that nobody else sees. At which point, somebody wearing an Apollo-style spacesuit emerges from a lake and kills the Doctor! Really kills him this time. The spaceman escapes and the others burn the Doctor?s body with the gasoline. The Time Lord obviously brought them all there for a reason, now they have to figure out why? Confused in the first 5 minutes of a new season? Welcome to the Universe of Dr. Who! Matt Smith...
Memo To The BBC: Cancel Doctor Who!
2011-04-24 08:30:00
So here we are. Series Six.or Season 32.Or whatever.Doctor Who is back.Matt Smith helms the Tardis once again as The Doctor with Karen Gillan returning as companion Amy Pond and Arthur Darvill as her boyfriend/fiancee Rory. The title for this opener? "The Impossible Astronaut". I don't mind the show's rather goofy titles for stories as they usually don't make or break a story.A few minutes into it, under the pen of current executive producer Steven Moffat, I came to realize one thing. The people behind the scenes of Doctor Who are beginning to run out of energy. As a result, they have run out of ideas.I stuck with this episode trying to curb my judgement. Then when I reached the...
The Doctor Who cast sing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
2010-12-22 21:13:00
I already loved Matt Smith (The 11th Doctor) and Karen Gillen (Amy Pond) of the BBC's Doctor Who sci-fi series, but this rendition of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by the duo -- with Arthur Darvill (Rory) on piano -- is just too charming:Be sure to check out ShowPatrol's spoiler-free review of the Doctor Who Christmas Special 2010!...
"Doctor Who" Open from "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson&q
2010-12-01 23:39:00
When Matt Smith recently appeared on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, the host griped that the opening musical number had to be cut because they couldn't get approval for use of the Doctor Who theme music. "I sure hope it doesn't leak out onto the internet" Ferguson joked, knowing perfectly well that it would.  And here it is: I really need to stay up later and watch this show!...

The Daleks are back, and Doctor Who has been invited to, um, meet them. As "The Beast Below" ended Saturday, Amy Pond took a call from Winston Churchill. Below is that same clip and two more from BBC that I found on YouTube. Enjoy, and leave a comment to let me know what you think of Matt Smith and Karen Gillan as the Doctor and Amy....

Doctor Who teaches Shakespeare?
2009-12-20 19:45:00
As I watched the Doctor Who Special "Waters of Mars" last night on BBC America, knowing that it was the harbinger of the end of David Tennant as the good Doctor, I got kinda choked up. I was cheered up, though, by twitter friend @Pippsta who sent me a link to this video!  In it, David Tennant plays a Scottish English teacher taking on former 'companion' Catherine Tate who plays a student.  If you've seen Tate's comedy show, it's a character that she revisits frequently. The skit was put on for the UK's Comic Relief 2007 and is a classic:...

David Tennant of 'Doctor Who' the love at Comic-Con
2009-07-26 22:21:00
One thing was obvious when David Tennant came onstage for the "Doctor Who" panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday: Fans do not want his time as the Time Lord to end. Fans shouted "We love you!" and "Don't go!" and "Love your hair!" They stood and shrieked and cheered as Tennant, not unlike is quirky Doctor, ran in front of the stage with his arms in the air. "I love you too, each one of you, but in a slightly different, individual way," Tennant, wearing a sparkly Stormtrooper T-shirt, said at one point to the crowd's pleasure....

Call me a soppy sod but I was very touched that the bloke in this picture mentioned me in the acknowledgments section of his Ph.D Thesis 'Concepts and Calculations in Cryptography'. Of course, I know nothing about such things but it is nice to be mentioned for just being a nice geezer. So, cheers Dude. Whilst I really like this photo, it pains me a little to post it as it was shot with his Canon 1v and as a Nikon Fanboy this is really against my religion. Still, I gotta say, the Canon 50mm f/1.4 on the 1v with some Tri-x film is a lush combo. Go Nikon!

For example, throughout ...
