Memo to Phony Doctors Group: Let the President Eat His Hot Dog!
2012-05-09 22:59:00 The evangelical vegetarians at Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (despite the name, only 10 percent of its members are medical doctors) have a habit of attacking President Obama and the First Family for their consumer choices. You see, apparently the President and the First Lady appreciate the occasional cheeseburger, and PCRM thinks that photos of the Obamas enjoying food cause obesity or something. The group intends to petition the White House to forbid pictures of the Obamas or other members of the President’s staff eating what PCRM calls “carcinogenic or obesogenic foods.” Meanwhile, media outlets are eating PCRM’s press releases up. More and more, it seems PCRM is adopting the “press slut” philosophy of its comrades at PETA. What are these evil foods anyway? Given PCRM’s track record, they are any foods with animal products. Whether it is bashing heart-healthy fish, lean chicken, or even milk, PCRM is no stranger to employing junk s...

?The Doctor is in ? Become an Engaged Patient?
2012-03-13 14:27:00 Many of us avoid the doctor for years but there will be a time when all of sudden a family member or even yourself becomes a patient with more than a cold or the flu. You should have information on how best to be a good, no, great patient. As an aircrew member I enjoyed years of doing an annual physical and saying thank you and being on my way. We did deal with a chronic illness for one child but overall we had fantastic health and enjoyed using the military medical care system with few exceptions. When I saw this article on DoDLive, I wanted to see what the author had to say: ?The Doctor is in ? Become an Engaged Patient?. I had just finished my last physical therapy in the morning. After almost a year of care and effort on my part I was feeling pretty confident again. I had learned a new term NED, No Evidence of Disease, and after one positive report after another I wanted to see what I had done right or wrong during the last 18 months of treatment for sarcoma...
Serving the individual: How much do doctors really know?
2012-02-19 16:18:00 You ever look up at the doctor’s sign in a waiting room? I did today. And in English it said “Doctor’s Office Center” and in Spanish it said, “Centro de Oficina Consultorios.” I was reminded of a friend of mine who said that when he goes to the doctor he literally tells them, “You’re my... 2012-01-17 18:51:00 The new guideline to doctors comes amid growing concerns about the number of women delaying childbearing. In Canada, 11 per cent of first births now occur in women aged 35 and older, up from five per cent in 1987.Photograph by: Thinkstock, canada.comMen, and not just women, need to be aware of the "reproductive consequences" of postponing parenthood, new national guidelines on the risks of delayed child-bearing warn.Though women especially should recognize that their "fecundity and fertility" starts to decline precipitously after 32, a man's semen quality and fertility also worsens with age, according to guidelines endorsed by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. In addition, babies born to fathers of "advanced paternal age" — defined as 40 and older at the time of conception — are at increased risk of genetic disorders, as well as schizophrenia, autism and some forms of cancer, according to the authors. The new guideline to doctors comes amid growing concer...
Video: Patients Shouldn't Rate Doctors?
2011-12-22 13:19:00 In the video above, I talk in a TV interview about how some doctors are making their patients sign "gag orders" preventing them from talking about their doctors on social media. Is this fair? I talk about physician's reputation on line and why this is important. The anchor was also nice enough to mention my podcast and ask me what's that about. I mentioned that I talk about social media and medicine topics including the recent failure of Congress to pay a measure to prevent a 27% Medicare physician payment cut as of January 1, 2012. The interview was recorded on Wednesday, December 21, 2011. I invite you to check out some more of my TV interviews at MikeSevilla.TV

AIIMS Starts E-Book Facility For Doctors And Students
2011-06-28 14:03:00 AIIMS, the sixty nine year old finest health institute in the country just set a new example by starting an e-book facility for all resident doctors and students. The service will be accessible via Wi-Fi. Apparently, the concept was in discussion since last year. “We have finally got an e-book facility. We have given the list of e-books and journals to the administration. The list was submitted in May 2010, and at last we got a few e-books for us,” said Dr Debjyoti Karmakar, president, Resident Doctors Association (RDA), AIIMS. Incidentally, the latest buzz in market pertains to the possible entry of Amazon in India. Although, a comparatively low PC penetration of around 35% in Indian households and a mere 9% of the overall internet population form a relatively poor base towards forming a target segment for e-books in India, Amazon’s entry may rightfully change the current scenario. Similar inclination have been shown by Flipkart, a Bangalore based start-up with over ...

Doctors' Diaries on PBS
2009-04-07 23:31:00 The year was 1987 and seven newly minted medical students started their journey to becoming a doctor. I was in high school when the first part of this documentary first aired. I remember it well. I was still unsure whether I wanted to even consider medicine as a career.I mean, back then, my friends and I were just documenting our silly lives on old video tape. Remember this video I posted at Christmas? Anyway, the original airing of this PBS special really impacted me. And, in fact, I do remember thinking about what my first day of medical school would be like. I think I made a VHS recording of this show and played it back right before med school.Anyway, a reunion show is going to take place tonight on PBS. Check out the Doctors' Diaries link on the NOVA website. Also check out the video above for a sneak peak preview of tonight's part one episode. Who knows? I may even share some of my own thoughts on this on The Doctor Anonymous Show this week.
