Doctors' Diaries on PBS
2009-04-07 23:31:00 The year was 1987 and seven newly minted medical students started their journey to becoming a doctor. I was in high school when the first part of this documentary first aired. I remember it well. I was still unsure whether I wanted to even consider medicine as a career.I mean, back then, my friends and I were just documenting our silly lives on old video tape. Remember this video I posted at Christmas? Anyway, the original airing of this PBS special really impacted me. And, in fact, I do remember thinking about what my first day of medical school would be like. I think I made a VHS recording of this show and played it back right before med school.Anyway, a reunion show is going to take place tonight on PBS. Check out the Doctors' Diaries link on the NOVA website. Also check out the video above for a sneak peak preview of tonight's part one episode. Who knows? I may even share some of my own thoughts on this on The Doctor Anonymous Show this week.

Doctors Test Newly Invented Gestural Interface During Brain Surgery
2008-06-19 07:52:00 The new and growing field of gestural computing got a serious field test during brain surgeryGestural interfaces are a hot new field of computing. Microsoft announced that its upcoming OS -- Windows 7 -- will rely heavily on gestures and touch. In a most basic sense, a gestural interface is controlled by movements of the hands or arms, allowing users to gesture to literally scroll around images on screen. Sometimes this is coupled with touch in devices such as the iPhone, where a pinching gesture can shrink or expand items.Continuing the progress in the field of gestural computing, researchers at Israel's Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) developed a new gestural computer system specially designed for medical use. In the past, doctors used touch screens or mice to navigate about images during surgeries. However, by touching the screen, they risk compromising sterility and introducing infection into the surgery site. The new system is purely gestural and requires no touch...

Hinckley Jr. have petitioned for an easing on his current restrictions including obtaining a driver's license, spending more unsupervised time in the community and having extend visits to his mother's home in Virginia. Hinckley, 53, has been held at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C. since his March 30, 1981 shooting of President Ronald Reagan. In addition to the shooting of the President, Hinckley also severely injured Press Secretary James Brady and wounded two Secret Service agents. At present, Hinckley is allowed to visit his mother in Williamsburg, Virginia area for six-day periods and is also allowed to leave the hospital with groups of patients. Doctors are seeking to extend these visits to ten-day periods and to double the time Hinckley is allowed to spend unaccompanied in the Virginia community each day, according to prosecutors. The doctors have asked for Hinckley to be allowed more time to do volunteer w...

Indonesian doctors receive casualty training in Israel
2008-06-03 03:06:00 When Magen David Adom Chairman Dr. Noam Yifrach told Foreign Ministry officials that he had received an entry visa for Indonesia, he was told that entering the country wouldn't be the problem."They told me, 'We're sure you'll be able to go in,'" he said with a smile. "It's getting back out that we're concerned about."Indonesia, which is home to the largest Muslim population in the world, has no official ties with Israel, and contact between the two countries, while not completely unheard of, is certainly rare. But that didn't stop Yifrach and MDA coordinator to the Red Cross and Red Crescent David Abadi from traveling to the country's capital, Jakarta, last month to finalize plans for 23 Indonesian doctors to take part in a two-week-long seminar in Israel on the "management of multi-casualty incidents" - something for which the two countries sadly share a need."It's easier to order a pizza in Indonesia than an ambulance," Prof. Aryono D. Pusponegoro said to the laughter of ...

Doctors Attempt to Re-Grow Soldier's Missing Finger
2008-05-27 18:01:00 In a major new medical study of regenerative medicine, Pentagon researchers, Army doctors, and a team of researchers at several of the nation's top medical facilities are attempting to help a soldier re-grow a finger that was lost to a bomb attack in Baghdad last year, according to a top story from CNN. The procedure, which involves applying a specially formulated powder to the wounded body part, was inspired by the regenerative abilities of salamanders. The powder—nicknamed "pixie dust" by some of the people at Brooke Army Medical Center—is made from tissue extracted from pigs, and works by forming a microscopic lattice that attracts stem cells and convinced them to grow into the tissue that used to be there. The researchers consider re-growing a finger to be the first step which, if successful, could lead to further tests to grow replacement organs for patients in need of transplant. This is another example of technology being developed for the U.S. military that ...

Cosmetic Medicine: A Tale of Two Doctors
2008-05-27 03:16:00 Article and Photos by Jay Fermin www.PinoyWired.comGlendale, California: I have been very busy seeing doctors lately. No, I am not sick at all. I met up with doctors representing the 'Feel-Good' medical tourism explosion that is now happening in the Philippines. Even a major Philippine newspaper summed it all up with the headline: "RP is the Next Beauty Capital of Asia." I was invited to a press conference last May 3, 2008 of Belo Medical Group on their new partnership with United HealthCare, Inc. (U.S. Healthcare) at a restaurant in Glendale together with civic, business, and media representatives. Belo Medical Group's very own young CEO Enrique Soriano III was on hand to weave us thru the process, amid the chuckle and smiles of those present, and explained what the 'Beauty & Wellness' part of Healthcare is all about. You see it's all very simple. 'Feel Good' clinics are the favorite first 'Stop-over' of Balikbayans to the Philippines. They make arrangements in advance, t...

Doctors should be alerted when combining western, TCM treatments - Singapor
2008-05-21 04:21:00 Doctors should be alerted when combining western, TCM treatments - Singapore By Liang Kaixin & Heather Tan, SINGAPORE: With one in ten married couples facing fertility problems, more are turning to western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for help. Doctors said it is all right to combine both types of treatment, but couples need to inform their doctors accordingly so that accurate prescriptions can be given. Treatments under TCM such as acupuncture and foot reflexology are commonly used, and TCM fertility treatment encompasses many segments. Colin Chan, a registered physician at Ideal Clinic and lecturer at College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said: “There are mainly four categories. The first one would be the blood category. The second would be dampness-heat category and the third type would be deficiency in kidney category. “The two main points (in the third category) are the deficiency of the ‘yang’ energy and the deficiency of ... |
