Video: Patients Shouldn't Rate Doctors?
2011-12-22 13:19:00 In the video above, I talk in a TV interview about how some doctors are making their patients sign "gag orders" preventing them from talking about their doctors on social media. Is this fair? I talk about physician's reputation on line and why this is important. The anchor was also nice enough to mention my podcast and ask me what's that about. I mentioned that I talk about social media and medicine topics including the recent failure of Congress to pay a measure to prevent a 27% Medicare physician payment cut as of January 1, 2012. The interview was recorded on Wednesday, December 21, 2011. I invite you to check out some more of my TV interviews at MikeSevilla.TV

AIIMS Starts E-Book Facility For Doctors And Students
2011-06-28 14:03:00 AIIMS, the sixty nine year old finest health institute in the country just set a new example by starting an e-book facility for all resident doctors and students. The service will be accessible via Wi-Fi. Apparently, the concept was in discussion since last year. “We have finally got an e-book facility. We have given the list of e-books and journals to the administration. The list was submitted in May 2010, and at last we got a few e-books for us,” said Dr Debjyoti Karmakar, president, Resident Doctors Association (RDA), AIIMS. Incidentally, the latest buzz in market pertains to the possible entry of Amazon in India. Although, a comparatively low PC penetration of around 35% in Indian households and a mere 9% of the overall internet population form a relatively poor base towards forming a target segment for e-books in India, Amazon’s entry may rightfully change the current scenario. Similar inclination have been shown by Flipkart, a Bangalore based start-up with over ...

One wonders how the patients they have left behind in other parts of India are faring.

Doctors' Diaries on PBS
2009-04-07 23:31:00 The year was 1987 and seven newly minted medical students started their journey to becoming a doctor. I was in high school when the first part of this documentary first aired. I remember it well. I was still unsure whether I wanted to even consider medicine as a career.I mean, back then, my friends and I were just documenting our silly lives on old video tape. Remember this video I posted at Christmas? Anyway, the original airing of this PBS special really impacted me. And, in fact, I do remember thinking about what my first day of medical school would be like. I think I made a VHS recording of this show and played it back right before med school.Anyway, a reunion show is going to take place tonight on PBS. Check out the Doctors' Diaries link on the NOVA website. Also check out the video above for a sneak peak preview of tonight's part one episode. Who knows? I may even share some of my own thoughts on this on The Doctor Anonymous Show this week.

Future Doctors Could Sniff Out Cancer
2009-01-17 12:24:00 Skin cancer is on the rise in this country. The disease is currently diagnosed by taking a tissue sample of suspicious moles or lesions on the skin, which can be a slow & painful process. In cases where there are no outward signs of skin cancer, the disease can be difficult to detect, leading to a delayed or missed diagnosis.Doctors in the future could detect the most common form of cancer in US just by waving a wand-like scanner over patients, researchers claim."We're the first to identify & quantify the compounds involved in skin cancer odors," said researcher Michelle Gallagher, an analytical chemist at specialty materials company Rohm & Haas in Spring House, Pa.Recently, scientists found that dogs can actually be trained to sniff out skin tumors. This suggests the disease leads to changes within ill cells that release telltale chemicals. Medical tools that could detect these differences could give doctors a critical lead in fighting skin cancer."Knowledge of a link between odo...
