Box office blog: 'Twilight' devours 'Dogs,' 'Assas
2009-11-30 19:37:00 Vampires. Werewolves. Teen hormones. There's just no stopping 'em.Over the highest-grossing Thanksgiving weekend of all time "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" continued its box office domination, taking in another $42.5 million to bring its domestic total to $231 million. Wow. Not too bad for a movie with some sulking, more sulking and then a little more sulking, with a tiny bit of obviously CGI action on top. Holding strong at No. 2 was "The Blind Side," earning $40.1 million to become Sandra Bullock's second movie this year (including "The Proposal") to reach the $100 million mark. Now if only either of those movies were funny or moving. The new, not-so-great movies released Thanksgiving didn't do a lot, thankfully. The horrible, horrible...
I Wish I'd Been at the Meeting Where Disney Greenlit 'Old Dogs&ap
2009-11-30 14:32:00 Photo courtesy of DisneyThe ad campaign for the John Travolta-Robin Williams vehicle "Old Dogs" begs a very important question: Is the tagline "From the Director of 'Wild Hogs'" really a good thing? That's why I wish I had been at the meeting where a team of snazzy-suited executives from movie studio and Orwellian corporate dynasty Disney greenlit the screenplay for "Old Dogs." Exec 1: Yeah, we got this screenplay from the director of "Wild Hogs" called "Old Dogs." Whaddya think? Exec2: Wait, which one's "Wild Hogs?" Exec3: The motorcycle one. With Tim Allen and Travolta. Exec2: [Blank stare] Exec3: Martin Lawrence. William H. Macy. They ride on motorcycles and get in a jam with Ray Liotta's biker gang and...

In Defense of Dogs: Markley Misses the Mark
2009-10-17 18:15:00 It's like two countries at war - &-nbsp; &n-bsp; &nb-sp; &nbs-p; A couple of days back, ChicagoNow blogger Stephen Markley posted on why he hates dogs. Then, of course, I post a response, Barking in Defense of Dogs. This morning - a historic moment, which reader Mr. Brown Thumb called "The Milk Bone Summit," Steve and Stephen meet - I invited Markley on my WLS Radio Show, Steve Dale's Pet World. (We'll archive for those who missed the historic moment and once posted on the WLS website, I'll let you know). Sure, Markley (who calls himself the greatest writer you've never...
Barking In Defense of Dogs On-the-Air
2009-10-17 02:06:00 Chicago Now blogger Stephen Markley posted that it's a ruff world if you hate dogs....I posted a reply, barking in defense of dogs. Many of you commented. Now you can hear the dog hater himself on the air. Stephen appears on my WLS Radio show tomorrow (Oct. 17) morning, just after 6 AM on WLS-AM (890 AM or at www.wlsradio.com). We will all hear why the guy - who has never been bitten or attacked (by all accounts) growls about canines. How can anyone hate a face like this? Also, on the show the irrepressible Miss Meowsky of Barker & Meowsky: A Paw Firm. She has the latest on the trendiest costumes for our pets. Miss Meowsky also tells about a...
Barking In Defense of Dogs
2009-10-15 04:37:00 This is my reply to fellow Chicago Now blogger Stephen Markley's post about why he simply doesn't like dogs, or for that matter - it seems - animals.Poor Stephen (odd we share a very similar name) begins by talking about the barking dog ordinance recently passed in Chicago (which i don't believe is a bad thing), cheering that it makes him happy that dog owners' experience just a sliver of the grief he has by not liking dogs. Wishing grief on others is an odd trait to be proud of...As he continues in his post, it becomes clear that he isn't writing about the city ordinance, after all, but rather why he hates dogs.Hate is a pretty strong word...and...
It's a Ruff World If You Hate Dogs
2009-10-14 14:09:00 Photo: MorguefileChicago recently passed an ordinance that would fine dog owners from $50 to $250 if they fail to control their pets from making "excessive noise." To which I say, "great"--not because I have a dog in my neighborhood that particularly annoys me, but because it generally makes me happy when dog owners have to experience even a sliver of the inconvenience and grief that I have taken my whole life simply for not liking dogs. That's right. I'll say it again and again. Even though I know it makes me the least popular guy since I was the least popular guy in 7th grade: I. Hate. Dogs. I hate the way they smell, the way they eat, the...

Where Dogs Can Be Dogs
2009-10-10 16:09:00 They tout Camp Dogwood is where dogs can be dogs. Having participated in camp there, I agree. It's also where where people can play with their dogs, but enjoying what the dogs want to do first and foremost. Younger dogs (depending the season) can partake in agility, lure coursing or go swimming...among a long a list of possibilities...while older dogs can just hang out and get a massage. Hopefully some campers will share their experiences. Sunday (tomorrow) Robin and I will take Lucy and Ethel for the day (couldn't go earlier because I had to work on the radio Saturday). Here are some photos from an earlier camp session. Terry was on my WLS radio show, she's been to about...

Lie down with Dogs, Get up with Fleas
2009-09-20 15:57:00 I cannot do Fox News. They have anointed themselves the Tea Party outlet, and they are welcome to front that group. But I will not get my news there. Ever. Chris Wallace can say he is not "like Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity" but he is tied to them by his FOX affiliation. He went there- he has to take the backwash. FOX is in the business of imagery, not news. They have created and fanned a movement because it suits their ratings mongering delivery. It is resulting in all heat, no light- paralysis. I concur that the Tea Party clan should be validated for their love of country, excoriated for the shallow knowledge. There is so little cohesion to...

Latest Lyme Disease Info and Treatment for Dogs
2009-08-23 21:04:00 Cait’s little boy hasn’t been feeling so well. Feverish, tired and achy, all Wink wants to do is rest quietly. It’s sad to see this normally effervescent little guy so under the weather. (Though, in a day or so, he should be back to his normal self because he’s been started on Doxycycline, the antibiotic of choice for Lyme.) Wink has been unlucky enough to contract Lyme Disease. I say unlucky because once a dog is infected with Lyme, it can never be fully cured of it, at least at the present time. Let’s hope that changes in the not-too-distant future. Since I live in an endemic area, and every dog I’ve had since living in this house (going on two decades) has become infected–despite my best efforts–I’ve made it a mission to keep up with the latest research and effective protocols. For the Cliff Notes Version (continue reading after this section if you’re interested in more in-depth info below) First! Statistics indicate th...

A kid's cooking class, minor league sluggers and $1 hot dogs come to W
2009-08-03 03:34:00 Photograph used via creative commons license.Taking the whole family to a Cubs game can be a seriously pricey proposition. The tickets prices, transportation costs, and food really add up quickly -- which is why I think that Chicago-area families will be thrilled to hear about this great (and super affordable) opportunity to visit Wrigley Field. On Sunday, August 9th, Wrigley Field is hosting a minor league game between the Iowa Cubs and the Las Vegas 51's. Tickets start at $5 (can't beat that). Throughout the game, hot dogs are $1 each (another deal!).But wait, that's not all. Before the game, Levy Restaurants is offering a kid's cooking class in the stadium where the first 100 kiddos can learn how to make...

But it seems, that there is someone out there who has put some serious thought into the psychological and physical affects that neutering can have upon a male dog, and they've come up with a very specific kind of prosthetic.
Hypocrisy from the Blue Dogs
2009-07-28 21:37:00 Fiscally conservative Democrats...So called "Blue Dogs" are all but working WITH the Republicans in an effort to kill health care reform.HYPOCRITICAL bastards! Virtually all voted in FAVOR of George Bushes BAILOUT of the financial industry. It appears they are only "conservative" with our money, when spending it means "we the people" will directly benefit. They are free wheeling, big spending Republicans when that money is meant for Wall Street & banks. I wonder how much that has to do with their personal investments? Sure, they grumbled, but ultimately they voted in favor of this ridiculously unpopular move by the Bush administration. They have the best health care the nation can offer as members of the House; and at the best rate: FREE! So why should they care about those millions of Americans without care, or worse, those that lost their homes because they had to pay medical bills? Where is the conservatism there? Absent. Probably cowering in some corner with "compas...
