Swimming with dolphins is for assholes
2009-08-11 04:30:00
When he speaks about the impact of captivity on the mammals, he doesn’t sound like a showboater, and what might seem like New Age-y talk about dolphin intelligence is pointed up with footage that left me haunted, too. That smile, says O’Barry, is nature’s greatest deception. Dolphins smile even when they’re crying on the inside. Living in Florida, I am used to certain theme-and-water-park douchebaggery. Comes with the heat, bugs, and old people driving 30-mph down the highway. But there is something vastly disturbing about certain aquariums and water parks. And not only in Florida. Most of the places where you are allowed to swim, pet, and kiss dolphins are getting these self-aware and beautiful creatures from the seas of Japan. Trainers from all over the world flock to a little town called Taiji where about thirteen fisherman use loud noises to frighten hundreds of dolphins every year and force them into a tiny cove. Once there, trainers pick only the cutes...

Welcome a new TBOE Reader-- dolphins!
2009-03-20 15:46:00
Dolphins do amazing things -- including, now, reading my blog. It wasn't so long ago that I proposed people using the phrase "shoulda put a ring on it" to describe something liked or to rub in the loss of something someone else liked... and now I find out that dolphins (maybe all of them, maybe just some) are, somehow, reading my blog. That's what I surmise from the new dolphin bubbles phenomenon which I just found out about today and which blew my mind. Watch this:Isn't that amazing? I had never even heard of this before -- and we even went to Seaworld last year on vacation. We went, but never got to see that, and I'm sorry we didn't get to see it live. But even having missed it live, it's cool enough watching it on video. Dolphins blowing ring shaped bubbles and then playing with them -- bubbles that don't act like ordinary bubbles, either. I could watch that video all day; I wish they'd posted more of them (or videos of dolphins maybe using a laptop computer to read my...
Who Killed Flipper?
2009-01-28 12:08:00
(Artist credit: Christian Lassen)What's been happening with Sea Shepherd since my last update? I can summarize it in just a few sentences.(1) Japan's Yushin Maru #2 got chased into some thick ice floes while running from the SS ship. Seems they were more afraid of SS than the ice. Which leads to #2 ...(2) Yushin Maru #2 sustained propeller damage caused by the icebergs and had to limp to Indonesia, seeking repairs. It took them a little over two weeks to get there.(3) While docked in Indonesia, they were refused service and repairs. The officials in Indonesia, after confirming with Australia and others that the Yushin Maru was, indeed, a whaling ship, told them to leave. Turns out Japan lied to Indonesia about who and what they were about.== Go Indonesia! :: wild applause :: ==(4) So the Yushin Maru limps away from Indonesian waters after being ordered to leave and Sea Shepherd had no idea for awhile where they were and what was going on .. until a few days ago. They ...

(Artist credit: Christian Lassen)I think I may be having a relapse in my bronchitis :-( Was feeling all gung ho last evening but my roommate started getting sick about two or three days ago and now I feel like maybe whatever she had has been passed on to me too. :: sigh :: I don't feel downright awful, but it's been hitting more more in the last few hours. I decided that before I'm down again for the count, to put fingers to keyboard and get at least a New Year's message out :-) The Sea Shepherd crew has been quite busy in the Southern Ocean. In their first week out, they caught up with the whalers and put them immediately on the run. That's pretty impressive - to catch up with them so quickly. I do recall last year, Captain Watson had mentioned something about the possibility of bugging the Japanese whale ships in order to keep track of them. I wonder if he was able to accomplish that this year somehow? After all, that's one helluva big-assed ocean down there and it...

Miami Dolphins Playoff Information
2008-12-22 01:29:00
About five years ago, I bought a Dan Marino jersey for my friend who is a HUGE Dolphins fan. Ever since then, I receive periodic e-mails from the Dolphins. When I checked my Inbox this evening, this is what I saw:Dear Dol-fan, All of us at the Miami Dolphins and Dolphin Stadium are excited about the performance of the Dolphins under the leadership of Coach Tony Sparano. The team?s outstanding play has put us in playoff contention as we head into the final game of the regular season. As a result, the National Football League has authorized us to make plans for a possible post-season game to be played at Dolphin Stadium on Saturday, January 3rd or Sunday, January 4th. Our players and coaches have appreciated our fans? support all season long and the home-field advantage they have provided will be even more critical in the post-season. If the Dolphins defeat the Jets on Sunday, the Dolphins will host the AFC Wild Card Weekend game at Dolphin Stadium on Saturday, January 3rd or Sunda...
Sea Shepherd Making a "Splash"
2008-12-06 08:34:00
(Artist/Image credit: Howie Cooke)I've been battling either the flu or a very bad chest cold :-( I am recovering though and doing much better than the past couple of days. I don't get sick often and usually when I do, I've been likely to get over it within a day or two ... but this time around it's really kicked my butt. Seems yesterday (or was it the day before yesterday, Australia time?) the Sea Shepherd departed Brisbane for the Antarctica. Many of the crew from last season are back along with a number of new members as well.Among the new members is actress Daryl Hannah. She's long been involved in environmentalism and is well known for roles in movies such as Splash and Roxanne. You can read more in the latest update at Sea Shepherd. In my opinion, Japan is hypocrisy personified. They have stated they will arrest anti-whaling activists if they interfere with their hunts this year. For all their talk about killing whales for "research," Japan has resumed importing whale ...

Whale Hunts About to Begin Again
2008-11-10 10:37:00
In briefly continuing the spirit of my last post about Proposition 8 .... We've certainly come a long way in the past 48 years, haven't we?(Artist credit: Christian Lassen)Did you know that Greenpeace, just two weeks before the Japan whale hunt is slated to begin, has surrendered their fight out in the Southern Ocean?Sea Shepherd's Captain Paul Watson said:"As a Greenpeace co-founder, I am deeply offended that Greenpeace has been raising millions of dollars in the name of defending whales all year and now two weeks before the Japanese whaling fleet is scheduled to depart, they announce they will not be going," said Captain Paul Watson. "In my opinion they collected funds under false pretenses and now they have abandoned the whales. Shame on them."You can read Sea Shepherd's version of this here: Greenpeace SurrendersHowever, Greenpeace claims they are taking the fight directly to Japan this time.Greenpeace also claims credit for one of Japan's ships, the Oriental Bluebird, be...
NFL Week 3: Dolphins deflates the Patriots.
2008-09-21 21:59:00
The New-England Patriots' consecutive regular season winning streak was stopped at 21 this afternoon as the Miami Dolphins completely dominated the matchup to win by the score of 38-13.Miami's runing back Ronnie Brown had a phenomenal game. He participated to every Dolphins touchdown, rushing for 113 yards and four touchdowns and added a touchdown pass to his already very productive day on a tricked pass play. The Dolphins' head coach exploited Brown all game long as he received a total of three snaps in this game.Brown's four touchdowns broke the Dolphins record for most touchdowns in a game, previously held by Paul Warfield since 1973.Incidently, bofore today's game, the last regular season loss for the Patriots was against those same Miami Dolphins late into the 2006 season.(Picture: Ronnie Brown, Getty Images.)

Top 5 Miami Dolphins Moments of Past 15 Years
2008-06-05 06:16:00
So a couple of days ago I was watching the classic Dolphins/Jets game from 1994 on NFL Network and I got to thinking (which I try not to do too much).  And what came from my thinking was deciding to take a break from all the recent Dolphins news and take a trip down memory lane. So today, I present to you all the top 5 moments (in-game moments, that is - not as in when the Dolphins drafted "X" player or traded for "X player) of the past 15 years, in my own personal opinion.  And that's the fun of this.  Some you might agree with.  Some you probably won't.  But it makes for a fun debate and is something to help past the time until this weekend's mini-camp, which the media is able to access (meaning we'll have some good reports on what is going on). So let's get into my top 5 moments of the past 15 years: Number 5: Dolphins vs Raiders, Week 2 2001 Some might be wondering why an early season game is up this high.  Well the Raiders were coming off of a...

Report: Dolphins sign rookie Shawn Murphy
2008-05-30 19:22:00
[Editor's Note by Matty I] As I type this note, it's currently 4:30 pm EDT.  And right now, there are no other reports of the Dolphins signing Murphy.  So take the below KFFL report with a grain of salt and wait to hear further confirmation.  And if anyone sees, hears, or reads a report that talks about Murphy potentially having his deal done with the Fins, please post it in the comments. [end note] [UPDATE 4:49 pm] The Miami Herald is now also reporting that the Dolphins have signed Murphy with an official announcement coming shortly. [end update] According to a report on KFFL.com, the Dolphins have signed rookie guard Shawn Murphy to a contract.  The terms are unknown at this point. This isn't surprising, considering the Dolphins had 2 new roster spots cleared following the waiving of Tab Perry and the retirement of undrafted free agent Kory Robertson (which still hasn't been officially announced by the team).  Murphy, a 4th round pick, is expected to ...

Olympic Swimmers Learn From Sharks, Dolphins
2008-05-27 03:20:00
When winning an Olympic gold medal in swimming is the goal, it helps to take inspiration from some of the best swimmers in the world -- sharks and dolphins -- and that is exactly what U.S. Olympic team swimmers have been doing as they train. From suits to strokes, coaches, researchers and other advisers are making sure that their athletes benefit from fish and marine mammals' natural swimming abilities."Some of our athletes are now wearing what are called 'shark skin suits,'" Russell Mark, biomechanics coordinator for U.S.A. Swimming, told Discovery News."These aren't made of actual shark skin, of course, but they are slippery in feel, like sharks, and they make the wearer move faster than normal in the water by reducing friction and drag," he explained.Mark also indicated that excelling at the dolphin kick can make or break a swimmer's race."This is when swimmers push off walls and swim underwater without moving their arms, very similar to how a dolphin swims," he said. The move...
Dolphins sign Donald Thomas
2008-05-24 01:27:00
[Editors Note by Matty I] This was originally posted by "JMFlyer" as a fanpost, but I bumped it up to the front page.  Also, here's the official story from MiamiDolphins.com. [end note] Miami signed rookie 6th round pick Donald Thomas to a 4 year contract according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.  Thomas is expected to compete for a starting guard spot this season.  Thomas was a former walk on at Connecticut.  He is the 5th of the Dolphins 9 picks to sign.  Only Phillip Merling, Chad Henne, Kendall Langford, and Shawn Murphy remain unsigned.  No other NFL team has more than 1 player signed.  Nice work by the front office! Jason Taylor Mad with Bill Parcells, Tony Sparano and The Miami Dolphins?
2008-05-22 04:49:00
Folks I’m MAD...what the HELL is this new Miami Dolphins organization doing? Why is my homie, Jason Taylor upset? What is Bill Parcells and the new head coach, Tony Sparano, doing to Jason Taylor? They must be saying or doing some rather brutal things for this loyal and All Star, Pro Bowl Defensive player to not want to participate with his beloved Miami Dolphin teammates. Jason Taylor is a true gentleman and has always been 100% with the Miami Dolphins - a true warrior. Something ain't right folks. Now, I almost lost it when they relaesed Zach Thomas, another true Dolphin...now there after Taylor. I’m telling you, this mess happens every year with this troubled team and I am so tried of it. I do trust Bill Parcells, he’s a proven winner, I feel he is needed here, but what’s going on? Could Bill Parcells be antagonizing, harassing my buddie, Jason(Superman) Taylor? Well, that’s what’s floating around in my Miami Dolphin mind, somebody saying something or somebody doing ...
6 new Dolphins I'm most excited to see: Defensive edition
2008-05-20 06:15:00
We're now just 3 days away from the first veteran mini-camp under the new regime, which begins on Friday and runs through Sunday.  The next round of OTAs are also underway.  So with that in mind, it's time to talk about the new defensive players that I'm most excited/anxious to see on the field. You'll remember that I gave out my offensive list last week, and you can click here to revisit that.  Below are the 6 new Dolphins on the defensive side of the ball that I can't wait to see: Phillip Merling - Besides just being the Dolphins top 2nd round pick (and the 32nd overall), there are other reasons to be excited or anxious to see him on the field.  He was widely regarded as the best run-stopping defensive end in the draft and now he'll be attempting to learn a new position: the DE in a 3-4 scheme.  Some also think Merling might be able to transition to the pass-rushing OLB spot in a 3-4.  While I really don't see this as an option, it'll be inter...
Dolphins sign 3 rookies
2008-05-20 00:16:00
As "JMFlyer" points out in this diary, the Dolphins today signed 3 more rookies, bringing their total of signed draft picks to 4. The 3 they signed today are RBs Jalen Parmele and Lex Hilliard, and DE Lionel Dotson.  Parmele and Hilliard were 6th round picks, while Dotson was a 7th rounder.  The terms of the contracts weren't disclosed, but it's likely they each signed 3 year deals.  As soon as I hear or read any figures, I'll pass them along. The Dolphins now have 4 draft picks signed while no other team in the NFL has even signed one.  Kudos to this front office forworking quickly. The Dolphins also added an undrafted free agent, center Matt Spanos.  Spanos is out of USC and started 9 games for the Trojans last season.
Dolphins waive Drew Mormino
2008-05-16 22:47:00
Today the Dolphins announced that they have waived guard/center Drew Mormino after failing his physical.  Mormino was entering his 2nd season and was expected to compete for the starting guard spot opposite of Justin Smiley. Instead, Mormino (who spent the '07 season on IR) will be searching for a new job.  For the Dolphins, this means a couple things.  First, it shows that this new regime has no tolerance for players who are often injured.  So everyone better get in shape and stay healthy.  Second, it means Jake Long will get to wear the #77 that he wore at Michigan that was previously worn by Mormino. Most importantly, though, it means that, as of now, the two players competing for the remaining starting spot along the offensive line will be two rookies, Shawn Murphy and Donald Thomas, and the inexperienced Ikechuku Ndukwe.  I'd also expect a veteran or two to join the competition by the time training camp rolls around. Thoughts on this move?
6 new Dolphins I'm most excited to see: Offensive edition
2008-05-16 06:15:00
Well in one week, the Dolphins will be holding their 2nd mini-camp.  Though it is "voluntary," it's expected that most of the veterans will be in Davie for the camp.  After all, with Bill Parcells in town, "voluntary" means "you better be there."  This will be our 2nd chance to see the rookies and our first opportunity to see the other new players that this regime has brought in.  So what I wanted to do was just talk about some of the players I'm most excited/anxious to see in a Dolphins uniform as we head towards training camp in July.  Today we'll look at the offensive side of the ball and then we'll talk about the defensive side of the ball some time next week.  The list isn't in any particular order and I'm sure everyone's list would be different, which is why I encourage you all to tell us who you are most excited to see.  My offensive list is below: Chad Henne - Just because I'm a very vocal John Beck fan doesn't mean I hope Henne fa...
First over/under for Dolphins win in 2008
2008-05-14 03:37:00
Sportsbook.com has released their over/under win totals for all NFL teams for the 2008 season.  The Dolphins come in with the 2nd lowest total, with the win total for 2008 set at 5 1/2 wins.  They are tied with the Chiefs, who are also pegged at 5 1/2 wins.  The lowest total belongs to the Falcons, with 4 1/2 wins. As for the rest of the AFC East, the Patriots' total is set at 12.  The Bills and Jets are both pegged at 7 1/2 wins. But back to the Dolphins.  Five and a half is a tough play and both the over and the under pay out less than even money.  I think most realistic Dolphin fans would tell you that 5 to 6 wins is probably what we should expect.  So what do you think?  If you HAD to bet, would you take the over or the under for the Dolphins in 2008? Poll Place your bets: Will the Dolphins go over or under 5 1/2 wins in 2008? Over Under   39 votes | Results

Dolphins sign 2, waive 4
2008-05-05 22:50:00
The Dolphins today have announced the signings of CB Scorpio Babers and LB Keith Saunders.  Both were undrafted free agents who were given the opportunity to workout at the team's recently concluded rookie mini-camp. Also, the Dolphins have waived 4 players, two of which were with the team last year.  Those two are LB Abraham Wright and DE Derrick Robinson.  Wright, you'll remember, was a training camp standout last year under Cam Cameron and Dom Capers.  Many thought he would make an ideal pass-rushing outside linebacker in Miami's 3-4.  Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland clearly disagree. The two other players Miami has let go are WR Marcel Reece and CB Aaron Lane, both of which were undrafted free agents who the Dolphins signed last week after the draft.
Dolphins Minicamp: Day One Notes
2008-05-03 01:47:00
As you all know, the Dolphins have their first minicamp this weekend and it features just rookies.  Below are some of the highlights from the day courtesy of the local papers: First are some notes from Edgar Thompson: -Henne does have a long windup at times, but was accurate on many of his passes in windy conditions. He definitely throws a nice long ball. Henne also was the victim of a lot of drops. That’s to be expected for a QB working with a bunch of jittery rookies hoping to make a good impression. -One of them did stand out - Hawaii WR Davone Bess. He didn’t get drafted despite catching 108 passes last season and scoring 41 TDs in his college career. Bess (5-10, 195) is a little small and a tad slow (4.63 in 40), but he catches everything thrown his way. He made the best catch of the day, a diving grab on a down-and-in route thrown by Henne. -Jayson Foster also looks like he’s pretty dynamic. But at 5-foot-7, 170 pounds, the former Georgia Southern star ...
Dolphins Minicamp
2008-05-02 00:07:00
[Editors Note by Matty I] This was originally posted by Little Nicky.  I just edited it for front-page posting.  Also, here's the link to some more info on each player.  [end note] I'm disappointed that the rookie minicamps aren't open to the public.  I'm not sure how they've done it in years past, but I would definitely attend this year's if they allowed it.  My question is, how can we get Matty a media credential? lol.  Any ideas?  I want a first hand account of how the rookies look instead of getting a recap on the radio from a clueless Joe Rose or a drunk Jim Mandich.  Anyway..  Here's the final list of signings and tryouts for the rookie minicamp this weekend.  The team officially announced 14 signings and 4 tryouts through UDFA. Signings Davone Bess WR (Hawaii) Titus Brown LB (Miss. St.) Mike Byrne OL (Delaware) Dan Carpenter K (Montana) Jayson Foster QB/WR (Georgia Southern) Dan Gore OL (Boise St.) Daren Heerspink OL (...
Quick Hits: Dolphins cut 2; Ginn off return duties?
2008-04-30 02:45:00
GINN BEING REPLACED AT KR? There's an interesting little piece of information buried deep in a Sun-Sentinel article about the recent signings of a couple of undrafted free agent: Hawaii WR Davone Bess and Georgia Southern QB Jayson Foster.  The quote from the paper says: Foster and Bess have been told they will compete for kick return roles, an indication the Dolphins are intent on lessening the workload of second-year receiver Ted Ginn Jr. Foster is an electrifying runner (see here ) who is being brought in as a wide receiver and return man.  I'm a little surprised to see Bess was told he'll also compete for kick return duties, as he isn't as fast.  But he is quick, reminding me of a Wes Welker kind of return man.  The good news here is that this new regime does seem to want to lessen Ginn's workload, allowing him to focus on being the team's #1 receiver.  I just wonder if we are losing some value in Ginn because of how dynamic of a return man he ca...
Jake Long: Miami Dolphins 1st Round Pick Meets The Media

I'm still uploading videos from the NFL Draft. For more, visit my YouTube channel Zennie62 and our NFL Draft blog. Here we see Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long get selected "number one" by the Miami Dolphins, then meet the media in the Interview Room downstairs. This is more of a kind of behind the scenes video for those who've never seen the process with the media. I also included his Mom holding up his Dolphins "Number One" jersey.

After falling further than the original projections, UConn Huskies offensive lineman Donald Thomas was finally taken by the Miami Dolphins with the 29th pick (195th overall) in the 6th round. Thomas had a good NFL Combine and it had been thought he would have gone in the 4th or 5th round today. Thomas will give the ...
