Six Questions About Miami Dolphins Draft Pick Jonathan Martin
2012-05-11 16:01:00
Earlier this week, we introduced a new series looking at the Miami Dolphins' 2012 draft class. Basically, the Kansas City Chiefs ask themselves six questions about every draft prospect leading up to the draft. These questions come from Michael Holley's book "War Room," which followed three NFL executives, the New England Patriots' Bill Belichick, Atlanta Falcons' Thomas Dimitroff, and the Chiefs' Scott Pioli, as they prepared for the draft several years ago. We are using those six questions to look at the Dolphins' draft picks. Related: Six Questions About Miami Dolphins Draft Pick Ryan Tannehill The questions, which are answered below about second round pick Jonathan Martin, are: What will this player's role be as a Chief? | Will the role change from year one to year two? | How many downs can he be expected to play? | Which current player on the roster will he beat out? | What's his value on special teams? | Does he have positional versatility? Let's take a look at Mar...
Miami Dolphins All-Time Top 100 Players: 13. Mark Clayton
2012-05-11 14:01:00
Mark Clayton was a 5'9" wide receiver from Indianapolis. He played college ball with the Louisville Cardinals. Miami picked him up in the eighth round of the 1983 NFL Entry Draft. Clayton was used sparingly in the offense as a rookie, appearing in 14 games and catching six passes for 114 yards and his first career touchdown, a tiebreaking 14 yard catch from Dan Marino in the fourth quarter. Miami eventually lost the game to the Buffalo Bills, 38-35. He also completed his only career pass that day, a 48-yard touchdown strike to fellow "Marks Brother," Mark Duper. Clayton's real value in his rookie season was as a punt return specialist. He totalled 392 yards on 41 returns, scoring a 60-yard touchdown in a week 12 37-0 victory over the Baltimore Colts. Miami finished 12-4, AFC East Division Champions. Wood-Strock-ino combined for an NFL second lowest 11 interceptions on the season. In 1984, Clayton led the NFL with 18 touchdown receptions, earning his first Pro Bowl invitation. He w...
Brandon Marshall Wishes Miami Dolphins Luck, Takes Another Shot at Quarterb
2012-05-11 00:42:00
Former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall was back in Florida today, promoting his youth football camp at his alma mater, Lake Howell High School, in Orlando. In the publicity rounds, Marshall was interviewed on 740 The Game, during which, the trade that sent him from Miami to the Chicago Bears, as well as his time in Miami came up, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Izzy Gould. Marshall understands why the Dolphins traded him back in March, landing two third round picks in return. "It doesn't make any sense to pay a guy $2 million and only expect him to have 60 or 65 receptions, or 70 receptions, in this new offense," Marshall said. But, being the guy that he is, Marshall couldn't just leave him comments there. He had to get in another dig at the Miami quarterbacks, "Also, if you don't have a quarterback, it doesn't matter who you have out there. You can bring Jerry Rice back, in his prime, and he's not going to be effective." Marshall was vocally ...
Dolphins-friendly prospects litter Mel Kiper's first 2013 Big Board
2012-05-10 22:30:00
The best thing about the NFL Draft is that you can literally begin talking about next year's event just moments after the last one wraps up. As many here on The Phinsider have mentioned over the last two weeks, the 2013 NFL Draft will be a milestone for the Dolphins, as it will be the first draft in over a decade where the quarterback position isn't Miami's top need. That's a pretty exciting notion unto itself. For once, the Dolphins can actually hunker down and focus on bringing in high-round draft picks to bolster the pass rush, solidify the secondary and further add a lethal element to the receiver corps. Cue the heavy applause. With an eye on bettering this team next season, yesterday I took some time to check out Mel Kiper's first 2013 Big Board. Aside from my usual reaction whenever reading an initial big board (I almost always question just how many of the listed underclassmen will actually come out), I have to admit how impressed I was with some of the Dolphins-ready ta...
May 2012 Miami Dolphins Approval Ratings
2012-05-10 21:13:00
After three days of voting, we can now take a look at the first ever Phinsider fan approval ratings for Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, general manager Jeff Ireland, and head coach Joe Philbin. These approval ratings will become a monthly series on the site, and we will track how the ratings change for each member of the team's leadership. Since this is the first month in which we are doing these approval ratings, we don't have anything to compare them to, yet. But, each month, we will see what the trend is for each of these guys. The trend for the Dolphins right now seems to be going up, so it will be interesting to see how each of the Dolphins' top guys come out on the approval ratings. I am excited to see that at least 1,192 votes were cast for all three members, with Stephen Ross' rating having the most with 1,539 votes. Thank you for taking the time to vote in these polls. First up, we had owner Stephen Ross. He came out with a 55% approval rating, with another 24% se...
Miami Dolphins Early 2012 Odds
2012-05-10 19:00:00
I just turned and checked my calendar (okay, I checked the calendar on my phone, but either way, it still works), and saw that today's date is May 10. Yep, the 2012 NFL season is getting close - only 4 months until games start. Better see if the Miami Dolphins are favored in their upcoming games. Which games you ask? Well, the first 15 of course. You see, despite it being way too early for this sort of thing, Cantor Gaming - which operates several of the Las Vegas sportsbooks - released the odds for the first 16 weeks of the NFL season yesterday. You know, just to beat the rush of guys trying to get their bets in before the Week 1 action begins. And, because it's what we like to do here, we take the way too early betting lines, and discuss them anyway. Week 1: Miami Dolphins at Houston Texans -6.5Week 2: Oakland Raiders at Miami Dolphins -3.5Week 3: New York Jets at Miami Dolphins -1Week 4: Miami Dolphins at Arizona Cardinals -2.5Week 5: Miami Dolphins at Cincinnati Bengals -2.5W...

Miami Dolphins All-Time Top 100 Players: 14. Sam Madison
2012-05-10 14:01:00
Sam Madison was a 5'11" defensive back from Monticello, FL. He was a three-year starter and a second-team All-American in his senior season for the University of Louisville Cardinals. Miami drafted him in the second round of the 1997 NFL Entry Draft with the 44th overall pick. He would wear the number 29 throughout his Miami career. As a rookie, Madison started three of the 14 games in which he appeared at right cornerback. He finished the season with 21 tackles and one interception in a week 13 victory over the Oakland Raiders, 34-16. He also forced a fumble. Miami finished the campaign with a wildcard earning 9-7 record, only to bow out to the New England Patriots, 17-3. Miami's rush defense ranked fourth in the NFL, allowing nine touchdowns. Madison started every game for Miami in 1998, ranking second in the NFL with eight interceptions. This includes two games in which he picked off two, a week three 21-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers and a week 11 26-23 loss to the Pat...
Most successful Dolphins draft pick in 2012?
2012-05-10 11:00:00
Welcome to the NFL doldrums, everyone. We're officially in the phase of the offseason where it's acceptable to get hung up on roster moves that will have absolutely no effect on training camp, preseason or regular season. Wait, hold on ... I think I actually hear some activity going on. Let's take a closer look. (Tumbleweed blows across a dirt street; horse neighs; sound of Omar simultaneously cooking his wife a "man's dinner" and belittling his Twitter followers can be heard in the distance) Okay, so we're in full-blown hibernation mode. That's fine. It's never easy to go from the most exciting point of the offseason (the NFL Draft) to the least exciting point in one fell swoop. It's like going from 120 mph to 0 in 1.7 seconds on a high-powered motorcycle. For now, all we can do is continue critiquing the Dolphins' 2012 draft--one that has slowly become the darling draft among analysts over the last two weeks (who knew Jeff Ireland had it in him?). Thus, it's time to tell...

Miami Dolphins All-Time Top 100 Players: 43. Roy Foster
2012-04-05 14:01:00
Roy Foster was a 6'4" offensive lineman out of USC. He was a two time member of the All-America Team, a consensus selection in 1981. Miami chose him with their first round pick of the 1982 NFL Entry Draft with the 24th overall pick. Foster appeared in all nine regular season games for Miami in the strike shortened 1982 campaign as a rookie. The team finished with a 7-2 record, as the offense gained an NFL third best 1,344 yards. Miami advanced to Super Bowl XVII, losing to the Washington Redskins 27-17. In 1983, Foster appeared in all 16 games for Miami, including his first career start at right tackle, in a week three loss to the Los Angeles Raiders, 27-14. The Dolphins posted a 12-4 record, making it to the AFC Divisional Playoff before bowing out to the Seattle Seahawks, 27-20. Continue reading after the jump. 1984 would see Foster assume the starting role at left guard for all 16 games. The Dolphins finished at 14-2, easily cruising through the playoffs to represent the AFC in...
Kiper is officially on the Tannehill-to-Dolphins train. Choo Choo
2012-04-04 23:50:00
ESPN this afternoon released Mel Kiper's second-to-last mock draft of the 2012 pre-draft season. As you're all certainly aware, Kiper's three previous mock drafts this year had the Miami Dolphins selecting Iowa tackle Riley Reiff. Not so, this time around. Kiper took a cue from fellow ESPN draft puppet Todd McShay and the majority of analysts at NFL Network and slotted Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill into the Dolphins' selection at No. 8 overall. Kiper justified the pick by pointing out that Miami "lacks a long-range plan at quarterback," but said he wouldn't endorse Tannehill as someone who can start right out of the box. Kiper notes that Tannehill has an enormously high ceiling and makes sense in a situation where he can develop behind a starter who is already in place, especially considering the rate at which Tannehill developed during his brief time as a starting quarterback for the Aggies. "Tannehill's already sound mechanics and skill set imply a bright...

Miami Dolphins All-Time Top 100 Players: 44. Mike Kolen
2012-04-04 14:01:00
Mike Kolen was a 6'2" linebacker for the Auburn Tigers in college, and was drafted in the 12th round of the 1970 NFL Entry Draft by Miami, with the 289th overall pick. He joined the team as they joined the NFL, and as a rookie started all 14 games at right linebacker. He made around 85 tackles as the Dolphins qualified for their first ever postseason with a 10-4 record. The defense was middle of the road, statistically speaking, but the "No-Name" defense had yet to make a name for itself, so to speak. Continue reading after the jump. In 1971, Kolen started 10 of 14 games for Miami, registering around 65 tackles. Miami posted a new franchise best 10-3-1 record, advancing to Super Bowl VI. The defense ranked as the second best in the AFC, allowing 174 points, second only to Baltimore. Ironically, Kolen made his first career interception in the AFC Championship off of Johnny Unitas as the Dolphins beat the Colts, 21-0. Of course, Miami was trounced by Dallas in the title ga...

Miami Dolphins Coaching Search Continues With Packers OC Philbin
2012-01-06 18:01:00
The Miami Dolphins are expected to continue the search for their next head coach with an interview of Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. Philbin has been with the Packers since 2003, initially serving as their assistant offensive line coach for a year. He added responsibility for the tight ends in 2004, then moved up to become the offensive line coach in 2006. Philbin took over as the team's offensive coordinator in 2007, serving in that role for the last five seasons. Since he took over as the Packers' offensive coordinator, the team has never been ranked lower than tenth in points scored and total yards for the season, along with winning the Super Bowl last season. The Dolphins interest in Philbin, and the expected interview, was tweeted by Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: @BobMcGinn Bob McGinn #Packers O-coordiinator Joe Philbin will have another h-coach shot. 2012 Free Agents: Options for the Miami Dolphins
2012-01-06 11:00:00
I no longer have my fantasy football posts to churn out on Fridays so instead I'll post weekly updates on potential free agents and once free agency begins, I will recap the signings and releases. We have plenty of time before free agency begins and plenty of players will still resign with their teams before the period. Since we have some weeks to discuss, I'll start this one slowly by listing notable free agents for each position. As we move along, I will start discussing potential targets and what the terms of the deals may be in order to land some of the players. Here is the list of notable free agents: QBs: Drew Brees: Don't expect him to be there. I list him because technically, he will be a free agent. If he doesn't receive the franchise tag and hits free agency, every member of New Orleans' front office should be fired. Matt Flynn: His recent outing against the Lions just helped earn him another few million per year. Suddenly he's the highest prospect at QB that legitim...
Patriots 2nd Half Comeback Keys Win Over Dolphins, 27-24
2011-12-25 03:28:00
The first half was ugly. It was ugly offensively.  It was ugly defensively.  It was ugly on special teams and coaching. It was so ugly this is all I will say about it. The second half though was entirely different story as the New England Patriots rallied from 17 points down to defeat the pesky Miami Dolphins 27-24 Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro MA. Some Patriots players had second half stats that would equal a good full game for most players in the NFL.  I just hope heading into the playoffs this team doesn?t think they can turn it on when they need to.  With a defense as bad as the one patrolling ?The Razor? these days it?s the last thing they need. They are built to build a lead and hope the prayers of Patriots fan everywhere pull them through to the victory. The 17-point comeback is so unique in Patriots history in the Belichick/Brady era it was the first time all season they were behind by 17 points.  They hadn?t been behind by 17 poi...

Does anyone other than the '72 Dolphins want an 18 game schedule?
2011-02-11 23:25:00
It may be just a bargaining ploy, but NFL Commish Roger Goodell and the owners are proposing an increase in the number of regular season NFL games from its current slate of 16 to 18 as part of any new collective bargaining agreement. The current CBA expires on March 4th, and as usual, the issue is all about the money.   While millionaire (and even billionaire) owners grapple with millionaire players over how to split the pie of a thriving and very healthy NFL,  you can expect cooler heads to prevail and eventually come to a comprimise without forfeiting the entire season. But will that season be 16 or 18 games and do you care?      ...
Bears Make Tuna Out of The Tuna-Less Dolphins
2010-11-20 04:10:00
Former GM Bill ParcellsBy now we are all unanimously praising our Bears for a job "well-done" in Miami.  Also, to add more injury to insult for the fish, we "RUINED" Shula's "Ring-Of-Honor" night.  We also got a good look at the "sad" state of affairs that The Tuna (Bill Parcells) has left that Dolphins in.In this entry however, I only want to touch on a few things (on a positive tip) that we "did-not" see.We did not see an offense out of balanced, but a well rounded attack which resulted inMatt Forte running for 97 yards on 25 carries. We did not see Cutler sink deeper into the quick-sand of throwing the ball to the other team after one mistake throw. ...

Honestly, I almost forgot that the Bears were playing the Miami Dolphins on Thursday.  Nonetheless, this is a game we can win as well, and get some payback from 1985.  The Dolphins are playing in a very strong division and (at this point in the season) are hanging-on by a thread.  They were very lucky to get a win over the Tennessee Titans last Sunday, but I don't think they'll be as luck with us.The Dolphins offense is ranked 16th out of thirty two teams (one ahead of the Minnesota Vikings who we "shut-down" last week).  The Miami defense is ranked 8th (one behind the Vikes), but our defense is ranked 4th.  We should be able to blitz Tyler Thigpen...
Miami Dolphins: Playing tough; playing scared

It was bitter because they lost. We've heard all the cliches: "They came in second in a two horse race."  "Second place = first loser."  "Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades".... yada y...
2010 Dolphins Week 7 Game Balls
2010-10-26 19:00:00
Marc Serota - Getty Images View full size photo » This week's Game Balls are brought to you courtesy of Sprint. Tough game.  Tough loss. But, we already are discussing that this week.  I'll let that discussion continue somewhere else.  Here, we will award Game Balls for those Dolphins who played well this past week. And, as I said in the Game Thread, I did not get this week's game on TV.  So, I am going off what I saw on the Red Zone Channel, the Game Thread comments, the box score, and the write-ups you all have made since the game.  If I miss someone, please let me know in the comments, which will result in the Fan Game Ball next week. First, a look back at last week's Fan Game Ball: Week 6 Fan Game Ball.  Last week's Fan Game Ball was pretty much a consensus pick.  Everyone wanted to see Dan Carpenter pickup more yards than the two he was o...
Leadership and resiliency of Dolphins to be put to the test
2010-10-26 11:00:00
More photos » Wilfredo Lee - AP Browse more photos » It became clear this past offseason that the Dolphins had an obvious leadership issue in 2009. The team's captains were injured or insubordinate (I'm looking at you, Joey Porter), leaving the players in that locker room with little leadership to turn to when the season stood on the brink. This was clearly a large part of the problem late in the season as the Dolphins collapsed and failed to reach the postseason when they essentially had destiny in their own hands. The quick fix to this problem was to jettison the guys who were creating some of the issues while allowing new voices to take charge inside the locker room - whether it was a tenured Dolphin (Yeremiah Bell, for example) or a newcomer (Karlos Dansby). The long-term answer was to draft guys who were proven leaders on their college...
Dolphins suffer tough loss to Steelers, fall to 3-3

Buy Photo » Browse more photos » Tough. That's the word of the day. Two tough teams went toe to toe on Sunday at Sun Life Stadium. It was a tough, physical game. In the end, the Dolphins suffered a tough, heart-breaking loss (with some help from a tough call by the officiating crew). And now the Dolphins sit at .500 once again and face a very tough road ahead if they hope to make the playoffs in the very tough AFC. After the game, most of the talk obviously centered around that controversial call. Linebacker Karlos Dansby told the media, "They took that game from us, man" - r...
Refs decide to hand Steelers a win over Dolphins
2010-10-24 22:15:00
More photos » Wilfredo Lee - AP Buy Photo » Browse more photos » I'm not one to blame losses on referees. The Dolphins had their chances today. But the bottom line is that the Steelers were handed this win. It's that simple. The refs made up their mind - that they wanted the Steelers to win. So they made the ridiculous call and that was that. Three quick thoughts on today's loss: Everybody but the referees know that Ben Roesthlisberger's fumble was recovered by the Dolphins in the enzone. It's that simple. I expect Tony Sparano to get a letter apologizing from the NFL. But a letter won't change the fact that the Dolphins should be 4-2 right now. That play, though, is a perfect example of why refs need to let the play go through completely, assume it's a fumble and decide who recovered, ...

Dolphins vs Steelers: Prediction Time
2010-10-23 11:00:00
On Sunday the Dolphins will host one of the two or three best teams in the league when the Steelers march into Sun Life Stadium. Though I have a feeling there won't be many picking the Dolphins, let's see who the media is picking: Adam Schefter - Pit Chris Mortensen - Pit Tom Jackson - Pit Ron Jaworski - Pit Peter King - Pit Mike Florio - Pit Gregg Rosenthal - Pit Pete Prisco - Mia Jason Cole - Pit Sterling Sharpe - Pit Brian Billick - Pit Brian Baldinger - Mia This is about what I expected. And it's fair, I suppose. The Dolphins are 0-2 at home against very good teams. The Steelers are another very good team. Many are calling Pittsburgh Super Bowl contenders - and for good reason. That's why the Dolphins have a chance to really make a statement. But if they come up short, we're all going to be wondering if this is just what the 2010 version of the dolphins are - an above average team that hasn't beaten the league's best teams. With that said, I'm expecting a str...
Dolphins 2010 Perspective VII - The Power Rankings Only Edition
2010-10-22 19:52:00
Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you like my ramblings), I am having some computer issues this week.  As such, I wasn't able to write or publish a Perspectives yesterday.  In order to keep my power rankings up-to-date, I am going to publish this week's Perspective a day late - and only with the Power Rankings.  Please enjoy: Power Rankings 1. Pittsburgh Steelers (Last Week: 1) -  A 28-10 win over a scrappy Cleveland team with Ben Roethlisbeger just returning from suspension could- be bad news to the rest of the league. 2. New York Jets(3) - Heading into the bye, the Jets now have time to run their mouths about how great they are.  The problem?  They're right. 3. New England Patriots (4) - The Patriots beat the Ravens after trading away Randy Moss.  Shouldn't they have taken a step back? 4. New Orleans Saints(7) - The Super Bowl Champs seem to be getting themselves straight.  5. Atlanta Falcons(5) ...
Dolphins vs Steelers: Recipe for victory
2010-10-22 11:00:00
Scott Boehm - Getty Images Ronnie's prepared for a physical matchup. He says you have to stand up to the bully that is coming into their house on Sunday. View full size photo » 4-2. That's what the Dolphins are going for on Sunday. To get there, they'll have to knock off one of the most physical teams in the league. That's where our weekly recipe for victory begins: 1. Out-bully the bullies. The Dolphins pride themselves on being a tough, physical football team. Last week the Dolphins went into Lambeau Field and left with a win because they were the tougher team. In the locker room during the post-game celebration, head coach Tony Sparano basically told his team just that - proclaiming, "They eat the weak. They praise the strong." This week, though, one of the historically strongest and toughest teams in the league come into Sun Life Stadium. R...

Dolphins vs Steelers: Key Matchups
2010-10-21 11:00:00
More photos » Don Wright - AP Browse more photos » A couple of weeks ago, we needed to talk some Dolphin fans off the ledge. After back-to-back division losses at home, morale among fans was low. Luckily the players didn't have the same mindset - bouncing back off the bye week to knock off the Packers at Lambeau Field. Now the Dolphins have a chance to make a big statement on Sunday. Following up a win up in Green Bay with a win over the Steelers would be as impressive a two game streak as we've seen this team pull off in recent memory. It'll be no easy feat, of course. The Steelers are as tough and as talented as any team in the league. With that said, let's discuss three of the most important matchups of the game. Jake Long vs James Harrison Some people didn't like the fact that I called Harrison an idiot on Twitter yesterday after rep...
Dolphins Red Zone Report: Week 6
2010-10-21 00:00:00
This post is sponsored by XFINITY from Comcast. Interesting note as we sit here six weeks into the 2010 NFL season. The Dolphins have the 12th ranked offense in the league, averaging 347 yards per game. But the Fins are only ranked 24th in scoring, averaging 17.8 points per game. What's with the difference? One of the local writers claims that it's a reflection of the team's efficiency in the red zone. But that's not the case at all. This week the Dolphins were in the red zone only once, resulting in a Chad Henne touchdown pass to Davone Bess. That put the Dolphins at 6 for 9 on the season. Their 67% red zone success rate is actually tied for the second best success rate in the league, trailing only the Texans. Say what you want about Miami's troubles scoring touchdowns. You can talk about bad play calls and untimely turnovers. But one thing you can't do is question this team's efficiency inside the 20. On the flip side, the Dolphins are also one of the better red zone d...
Miami Dolphins: Great? Not yet, but they have potential!
2010-10-20 11:00:00
More photos » Scott Boehm - Getty Images Browse more photos » I especially enjoyed watching the Dolphins play this past Sunday! Of course, there were the obvious reasons; great game, Miami win, etc...  But also because I got to share this Miami win with some friends of mine in Denver.  When you live outside of Miami, it is sometimes challenging to find other Miami fans to sit down with, have a beer, watch the game, and root for our Fins.  So I left Southern California on Friday evening and rolled into Denver just in time to catch the game with some real, live Fin Fans! And how sweet a victory it was! But something else that is interesting is that when you are actually watching the game with friends, you talk about stuff more than if you just happen to be sitting next to some guy in a sports bar.  You know, "stuff...
