Miami Dolphins Coaching Search Continues With Packers OC Philbin
2012-01-06 18:01:00 The Miami Dolphins are expected to continue the search for their next head coach with an interview of Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. Philbin has been with the Packers since 2003, initially serving as their assistant offensive line coach for a year. He added responsibility for the tight ends in 2004, then moved up to become the offensive line coach in 2006. Philbin took over as the team's offensive coordinator in 2007, serving in that role for the last five seasons. Since he took over as the Packers' offensive coordinator, the team has never been ranked lower than tenth in points scored and total yards for the season, along with winning the Super Bowl last season. The Dolphins interest in Philbin, and the expected interview, was tweeted by Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: @BobMcGinn Bob McGinn #Packers O-coordiinator Joe Philbin will have another h-coach shot. The #Dolphins will interview Philbin by the weekend. He was in KC Wed. Jan ...

2012 Free Agents: Options for the Miami Dolphins
2012-01-06 11:00:00 I no longer have my fantasy football posts to churn out on Fridays so instead I'll post weekly updates on potential free agents and once free agency begins, I will recap the signings and releases. We have plenty of time before free agency begins and plenty of players will still resign with their teams before the period. Since we have some weeks to discuss, I'll start this one slowly by listing notable free agents for each position. As we move along, I will start discussing potential targets and what the terms of the deals may be in order to land some of the players. Here is the list of notable free agents: QBs: Drew Brees: Don't expect him to be there. I list him because technically, he will be a free agent. If he doesn't receive the franchise tag and hits free agency, every member of New Orleans' front office should be fired. Matt Flynn: His recent outing against the Lions just helped earn him another few million per year. Suddenly he's the highest prospect at QB that legitim...

Patriots 2nd Half Comeback Keys Win Over Dolphins, 27-24
2011-12-25 03:28:00 The first half was ugly. It was ugly offensively. It was ugly defensively. It was ugly on special teams and coaching. It was so ugly this is all I will say about it. The second half though was entirely different story as the New England Patriots rallied from 17 points down to defeat the pesky Miami Dolphins 27-24 Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro MA. Some Patriots players had second half stats that would equal a good full game for most players in the NFL. I just hope heading into the playoffs this team doesn?t think they can turn it on when they need to. With a defense as bad as the one patrolling ?The Razor? these days it?s the last thing they need. They are built to build a lead and hope the prayers of Patriots fan everywhere pull them through to the victory. The 17-point comeback is so unique in Patriots history in the Belichick/Brady era it was the first time all season they were behind by 17 points. They hadn?t been behind by 17 poi...

In The Red Zone: Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots Preview - Week 16
2011-12-23 12:00:00 This Week The New England Patriots host their AFC East Rival Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium on Sunday at 4:15 p.m. The Patriots (11-3) are 5-1 at The Razor, 3-1 against the AFC East and 8-2 in the conference. The Dolphins (5-9) are 2-5 on the road, 2-2 vs. the AFC East and 4-6 against the conference. The Line/Prediction As of Thursday the line on the game from Yahoo! Sports have the Patriots at MINUS 10. The over under is 48. My Prediction is Patriots 35, Dolphins, 27. Take the points (Dolphins) and take the over. I am 8-5-1 against the spread and 10 of 14 on calling the over/under in 2011. Tickets The Patriots are reporting the game as a sell out. It is the 190th consecutive sell out dating back to the 1994 season opener. The record includes preseason, regular season and playoff games. Tickets to the game, if available, can be purchased through Ticketmaster. You can check the availability here. After market tickets are available throug...

Does anyone other than the '72 Dolphins want an 18 game schedule?
2011-02-11 23:25:00 It may be just a bargaining ploy, but NFL Commish Roger Goodell and the owners are proposing an increase in the number of regular season NFL games from its current slate of 16 to 18 as part of any new collective bargaining agreement. The current CBA expires on March 4th, and as usual, the issue is all about the money. While millionaire (and even billionaire) owners grapple with millionaire players over how to split the pie of a thriving and very healthy NFL, you can expect cooler heads to prevail and eventually come to a comprimise without forfeiting the entire season. But will that season be 16 or 18 games and do you care? ...
Bears Make Tuna Out of The Tuna-Less Dolphins
2010-11-20 04:10:00 Former GM Bill ParcellsBy now we are all unanimously praising our Bears for a job "well-done" in Miami. Also, to add more injury to insult for the fish, we "RUINED" Shula's "Ring-Of-Honor" night. We also got a good look at the "sad" state of affairs that The Tuna (Bill Parcells) has left that Dolphins in.In this entry however, I only want to touch on a few things (on a positive tip) that we "did-not" see.We did not see an offense out of balanced, but a well rounded attack which resulted inMatt Forte running for 97 yards on 25 carries. We did not see Cutler sink deeper into the quick-sand of throwing the ball to the other team after one mistake throw. ...
Bears win their 700th game against the Dolphins
2010-11-19 06:34:00 The Dolphins' stadium, whatever you call it now, has been a house of horrors for the Bears but not tonight. The Bears completely dominated the Dolphins in a 16-0 shutout victory.
Bears Can Handle The Dolphins
2010-11-18 03:31:00 Honestly, I almost forgot that the Bears were playing the Miami Dolphins on Thursday. Nonetheless, this is a game we can win as well, and get some payback from 1985. The Dolphins are playing in a very strong division and (at this point in the season) are hanging-on by a thread. They were very lucky to get a win over the Tennessee Titans last Sunday, but I don't think they'll be as luck with us.The Dolphins offense is ranked 16th out of thirty two teams (one ahead of the Minnesota Vikings who we "shut-down" last week). The Miami defense is ranked 8th (one behind the Vikes), but our defense is ranked 4th. We should be able to blitz Tyler Thigpen...

2010 Dolphins Week 7 Game Balls
2010-10-26 19:00:00 Marc Serota - Getty Images View full size photo » This week's Game Balls are brought to you courtesy of Sprint. Tough game. Tough loss. But, we already are discussing that this week. I'll let that discussion continue somewhere else. Here, we will award Game Balls for those Dolphins who played well this past week. And, as I said in the Game Thread, I did not get this week's game on TV. So, I am going off what I saw on the Red Zone Channel, the Game Thread comments, the box score, and the write-ups you all have made since the game. If I miss someone, please let me know in the comments, which will result in the Fan Game Ball next week. First, a look back at last week's Fan Game Ball: Week 6 Fan Game Ball. Last week's Fan Game Ball was pretty much a consensus pick. Everyone wanted to see Dan Carpenter pickup more yards than the two he was o...

Leadership and resiliency of Dolphins to be put to the test
2010-10-26 11:00:00 More photos » Wilfredo Lee - AP Browse more photos » It became clear this past offseason that the Dolphins had an obvious leadership issue in 2009. The team's captains were injured or insubordinate (I'm looking at you, Joey Porter), leaving the players in that locker room with little leadership to turn to when the season stood on the brink. This was clearly a large part of the problem late in the season as the Dolphins collapsed and failed to reach the postseason when they essentially had destiny in their own hands. The quick fix to this problem was to jettison the guys who were creating some of the issues while allowing new voices to take charge inside the locker room - whether it was a tenured Dolphin (Yeremiah Bell, for example) or a newcomer (Karlos Dansby). The long-term answer was to draft guys who were proven leaders on their college...

And now the Dolphins sit at .500 once again and face a very tough road ahead if they hope to make the playoffs in the very tough AFC. After the game, most of the talk obviously centered around that controversial call. Linebacker Karlos Dansby told the media, "They took that game from us, man" - r...

Refs decide to hand Steelers a win over Dolphins
2010-10-24 22:15:00 More photos » Wilfredo Lee - AP Buy Photo » Browse more photos » I'm not one to blame losses on referees. The Dolphins had their chances today. But the bottom line is that the Steelers were handed this win. It's that simple. The refs made up their mind - that they wanted the Steelers to win. So they made the ridiculous call and that was that. Three quick thoughts on today's loss: Everybody but the referees know that Ben Roesthlisberger's fumble was recovered by the Dolphins in the enzone. It's that simple. I expect Tony Sparano to get a letter apologizing from the NFL. But a letter won't change the fact that the Dolphins should be 4-2 right now. That play, though, is a perfect example of why refs need to let the play go through completely, assume it's a fumble and decide who recovered, ...

Dolphins vs Steelers: Prediction Time
2010-10-23 11:00:00 On Sunday the Dolphins will host one of the two or three best teams in the league when the Steelers march into Sun Life Stadium. Though I have a feeling there won't be many picking the Dolphins, let's see who the media is picking: Adam Schefter - Pit Chris Mortensen - Pit Tom Jackson - Pit Ron Jaworski - Pit Peter King - Pit Mike Florio - Pit Gregg Rosenthal - Pit Pete Prisco - Mia Jason Cole - Pit Sterling Sharpe - Pit Brian Billick - Pit Brian Baldinger - Mia This is about what I expected. And it's fair, I suppose. The Dolphins are 0-2 at home against very good teams. The Steelers are another very good team. Many are calling Pittsburgh Super Bowl contenders - and for good reason. That's why the Dolphins have a chance to really make a statement. But if they come up short, we're all going to be wondering if this is just what the 2010 version of the dolphins are - an above average team that hasn't beaten the league's best teams. With that said, I'm expecting a str...

Pittsburgh Steelers (Last Week: 1) - A 28-10 win over a scrappy Cleveland team with Ben Roethlisbeger just returning from suspension could- be bad news to the rest of the league. 2. New York Jets(3) - Heading into the bye, the Jets now have time to run their mouths about how great they are. The problem? They're right. 3. New England Patriots (4) - The Patriots beat the Ravens after trading away Randy Moss. Shouldn't they have taken a step back? 4. Dolphins vs Steelers: Recipe for victory

View full size photo » 4-2. That's what the Dolphins are going for on Sunday. To get there, they'll have to knock off one of the most physical teams in the league. That's where our weekly recipe for victory begins: 1. Out-bully the bullies. The Dolphins pride themselves on being a tough, physical football team. Last week the Dolphins went into Lambeau Field and left with a win because they were the tougher team. In the locker room during the post-game celebration, head coach Tony Sparano basically told his team just that - proclaiming, "They eat the weak. They praise the strong." This week, though, one of the historically strongest and toughest teams in the league come into Sun Life Stadium. R...

Dolphins vs Steelers: Key Matchups
2010-10-21 11:00:00 More photos » Don Wright - AP Browse more photos » A couple of weeks ago, we needed to talk some Dolphin fans off the ledge. After back-to-back division losses at home, morale among fans was low. Luckily the players didn't have the same mindset - bouncing back off the bye week to knock off the Packers at Lambeau Field. Now the Dolphins have a chance to make a big statement on Sunday. Following up a win up in Green Bay with a win over the Steelers would be as impressive a two game streak as we've seen this team pull off in recent memory. It'll be no easy feat, of course. Dolphins Red Zone Report: Week 6
2010-10-21 00:00:00 This post is sponsored by XFINITY from Comcast. Interesting note as we sit here six weeks into the 2010 NFL season. The Dolphins have the 12th ranked offense in the league, averaging 347 yards per game. But the Fins are only ranked 24th in scoring, averaging 17.8 points per game. What's with the difference? One of the local writers claims that it's a reflection of the team's efficiency in the red zone. But that's not the case at all. This week the Dolphins were in the red zone only once, resulting in a Chad Henne touchdown pass to Davone Bess. That put the Dolphins at 6 for 9 on the season. Their 67% red zone success rate is actually tied for the second best success rate in the league, trailing only the Texans. Say what you want about Miami's troubles scoring touchdowns. You can talk about bad play calls and untimely turnovers. But one thing you can't do is question this team's efficiency inside the 20. On the flip side, the Dolphins are also one of the better red zone d...

Miami Dolphins: Great? Not yet, but they have potential!
2010-10-20 11:00:00 More photos » Scott Boehm - Getty Images Browse more photos » I especially enjoyed watching the Dolphins play this past Sunday! Of course, there were the obvious reasons; great game, Miami win, etc... But also because I got to share this Miami win with some friends of mine in Denver. When you live outside of Miami, it is sometimes challenging to find other Miami fans to sit down with, have a beer, watch the game, and root for our Fins. So I left Southern California on Friday evening and rolled into Denver just in time to catch the game with some real, live Fin Fans! And how sweet a victory it was! But something else that is interesting is that when you are actually watching the game with friends, you talk about stuff more than if you just happen to be sitting next to some guy in a sports bar. Swimming with dolphins is for assholes
2009-08-11 04:30:00 When he speaks about the impact of captivity on the mammals, he doesn’t sound like a showboater, and what might seem like New Age-y talk about dolphin intelligence is pointed up with footage that left me haunted, too. That smile, says O’Barry, is nature’s greatest deception. Dolphins smile even when they’re crying on the inside. Living in Florida, I am used to certain theme-and-water-park douchebaggery. Comes with the heat, bugs, and old people driving 30-mph down the highway. But there is something vastly disturbing about certain aquariums and water parks. And not only in Florida. Most of the places where you are allowed to swim, pet, and kiss dolphins are getting these self-aware and beautiful creatures from the seas of Japan. Trainers from all over the world flock to a little town called Taiji where about thirteen fisherman use loud noises to frighten hundreds of dolphins every year and force them into a tiny cove. Once there, trainers pick only the cutes...

Welcome a new TBOE Reader-- dolphins!
2009-03-20 15:46:00 Dolphins do amazing things -- including, now, reading my blog. It wasn't so long ago that I proposed people using the phrase "shoulda put a ring on it" to describe something liked or to rub in the loss of something someone else liked... and now I find out that dolphins (maybe all of them, maybe just some) are, somehow, reading my blog. That's what I surmise from the new dolphin bubbles phenomenon which I just found out about today and which blew my mind. Watch this:Isn't that amazing? I had never even heard of this before -- and we even went to Seaworld last year on vacation. We went, but never got to see that, and I'm sorry we didn't get to see it live. But even having missed it live, it's cool enough watching it on video. Dolphins blowing ring shaped bubbles and then playing with them -- bubbles that don't act like ordinary bubbles, either. I could watch that video all day; I wish they'd posted more of them (or videos of dolphins maybe using a laptop computer to read my...
Who Killed Flipper?
2009-01-28 12:08:00 (Artist credit: Christian Lassen)What's been happening with Sea Shepherd since my last update? I can summarize it in just a few sentences.(1) Japan's Yushin Maru #2 got chased into some thick ice floes while running from the SS ship. Seems they were more afraid of SS than the ice. Which leads to #2 ...(2) Yushin Maru #2 sustained propeller damage caused by the icebergs and had to limp to Indonesia, seeking repairs. It took them a little over two weeks to get there.(3) While docked in Indonesia, they were refused service and repairs. The officials in Indonesia, after confirming with Australia and others that the Yushin Maru was, indeed, a whaling ship, told them to leave. Turns out Japan lied to Indonesia about who and what they were about.== Go Indonesia! :: wild applause :: ==(4) So the Yushin Maru limps away from Indonesian waters after being ordered to leave and Sea Shepherd had no idea for awhile where they were and what was going on .. until a few days ago. They ...
Whalers = Arrogant Wankers
2008-12-30 10:26:00 (Artist credit: Christian Lassen)I think I may be having a relapse in my bronchitis :-( Was feeling all gung ho last evening but my roommate started getting sick about two or three days ago and now I feel like maybe whatever she had has been passed on to me too. :: sigh :: I don't feel downright awful, but it's been hitting more more in the last few hours. I decided that before I'm down again for the count, to put fingers to keyboard and get at least a New Year's message out :-) The Sea Shepherd crew has been quite busy in the Southern Ocean. In their first week out, they caught up with the whalers and put them immediately on the run. That's pretty impressive - to catch up with them so quickly. I do recall last year, Captain Watson had mentioned something about the possibility of bugging the Japanese whale ships in order to keep track of them. I wonder if he was able to accomplish that this year somehow? After all, that's one helluva big-assed ocean down there and it...

Miami Dolphins Playoff Information
2008-12-22 01:29:00 About five years ago, I bought a Dan Marino jersey for my friend who is a HUGE Dolphins fan. Ever since then, I receive periodic e-mails from the Dolphins. When I checked my Inbox this evening, this is what I saw:Dear Dol-fan, All of us at the Miami Dolphins and Dolphin Stadium are excited about the performance of the Dolphins under the leadership of Coach Tony Sparano. The team?s outstanding play has put us in playoff contention as we head into the final game of the regular season. As a result, the National Football League has authorized us to make plans for a possible post-season game to be played at Dolphin Stadium on Saturday, January 3rd or Sunday, January 4th. Our players and coaches have appreciated our fans? support all season long and the home-field advantage they have provided will be even more critical in the post-season. If the Dolphins defeat the Jets on Sunday, the Dolphins will host the AFC Wild Card Weekend game at Dolphin Stadium on Saturday, January 3rd or Sunda...

Sea Shepherd Making a "Splash"
2008-12-06 08:34:00 (Artist/Image credit: Howie Cooke)I've been battling either the flu or a very bad chest cold :-( I am recovering though and doing much better than the past couple of days. I don't get sick often and usually when I do, I've been likely to get over it within a day or two ... but this time around it's really kicked my butt. Seems yesterday (or was it the day before yesterday, Australia time?) the Sea Shepherd departed Brisbane for the Antarctica. Many of the crew from last season are back along with a number of new members as well.Among the new members is actress Daryl Hannah. She's long been involved in environmentalism and is well known for roles in movies such as Splash and Roxanne. You can read more in the latest update at Sea Shepherd. In my opinion, Japan is hypocrisy personified. They have stated they will arrest anti-whaling activists if they interfere with their hunts this year. For all their talk about killing whales for "research," Japan has resumed importing whale ...
Dolphins Under My Bed ? Sandra Clayton: Book Review
2008-11-27 01:23:00 According to the author?s website, this is the first of a trilogy of accounts, covering the adventures of a fifty-something couple, both fairly-well paid professionals but unenthusiastic about that last long stretch of slogging through the workday before retirement. In addition to that, the weather in England?s midlands where they lived and worked seemed to ...

Whale Hunts About to Begin Again
2008-11-10 10:37:00 In briefly continuing the spirit of my last post about Proposition 8 .... We've certainly come a long way in the past 48 years, haven't we?(Artist credit: Christian Lassen)Did you know that Greenpeace, just two weeks before the Japan whale hunt is slated to begin, has surrendered their fight out in the Southern Ocean?Sea Shepherd's Captain Paul Watson said:"As a Greenpeace co-founder, I am deeply offended that Greenpeace has been raising millions of dollars in the name of defending whales all year and now two weeks before the Japanese whaling fleet is scheduled to depart, they announce they will not be going," said Captain Paul Watson. "In my opinion they collected funds under false pretenses and now they have abandoned the whales. Shame on them."You can read Sea Shepherd's version of this here: Greenpeace SurrendersHowever, Greenpeace claims they are taking the fight directly to Japan this time.Greenpeace also claims credit for one of Japan's ships, the Oriental Bluebird, be...
NFL Week 3: Dolphins deflates the Patriots.
2008-09-21 21:59:00 The New-England Patriots' consecutive regular season winning streak was stopped at 21 this afternoon as the Miami Dolphins completely dominated the matchup to win by the score of 38-13.Miami's runing back Ronnie Brown had a phenomenal game. He participated to every Dolphins touchdown, rushing for 113 yards and four touchdowns and added a touchdown pass to his already very productive day on a tricked pass play. The Dolphins' head coach exploited Brown all game long as he received a total of three snaps in this game.Brown's four touchdowns broke the Dolphins record for most touchdowns in a game, previously held by Paul Warfield since 1973.Incidently, bofore today's game, the last regular season loss for the Patriots was against those same Miami Dolphins late into the 2006 season.(Picture: Ronnie Brown, Getty Images.)
