2012-02-07 11:30:00 by TJCoffey I’d be a zillionaire if I earned a dollar each time someone complains that all the great domain names are already taken. It’s just not true, however. Even in a highly competitive industry, you can think up original, appealing domain names for businesses by using naming tactics that few people use, such as ...

A Brand Name Could Be A Domain Extension Too. End Of Cybersquatting?
2012-01-12 07:32:00 ICANN has just opened its pearly gates for companies to register their brand names as domain extensions. The new names will come online in 2013, but application procedure has already started. It was a common perception that .COM was the most desired extension. However, with ICANN proposing new extension options, companies soon could even customize this end of the website. ICANN, the internet governing body, approved significant expansions to Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) to allow companies, organizations and even cities to turn their own brands into domain name extensions. Though brand names like TATA, Reliance, Birla may surely appeal for such exclusivity, we expect to see heavy game-play or bidding in the generic product range like .music, .shop, .food etc. But the with the fight now moving to a more generic aft field, there could be plenty to go around. A while ago, India had opposed the idea of a generic .XXX extension, lets see, how it responds to this. The 90 Day registration pro...

Associated Press Reports that Colleges Are Registering .xxx Domain Names
2011-12-12 01:59:00 The Associated Press reports that colleges are registering their brands as .xxx domain names to prevent porn sites from doing so. Their strategy takes advantage of the sunrise provisions for .xxx domain names that STL previously discussed. That’s a fine strategy for brand owners who have concluded that blocking porn providers is worth the financial commitment required to register domain names the brand owners will never use. After all, a porn site associated with universityofwashington.xxx probably wouldn’t reflect well on the University of Washington (who is mentioned in the article), even though no one would think the site is owned or approved by the UW in any way. Still, it requires the UW and similar brand owners to pay a bunch of money to domain name registrars forever to continue to tie up those names. And there’s no way a brand owner can think of all possible combinations involving their brand that a porn seller might use.
Are You Ready For Local Indian Language Domain Names?
2011-11-29 08:25:00 India, being the 2nd largest pocket of people in the world has immense potential. While it already has one of the largest populations of netizens in the world, there is still a lot of scope for growth. One barrier to people using the internet has been their inability or discomfort with using the English Language. Yahoo already offers its content in 6 Local Indian Languages. A lot of Apps too have recognized the need to reach out to Vernacular users. According to the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), who recently held a workshop on IDNs or International Domain Names in an effort to spread awareness, Internet Domain Names may soon be in Indian Languages. The Indian Government and the ICANN have both taken it upon themselves to push for local language domain names on the worldwide web. The workshop, while spreading awareness, had put special emphasis on promoting Kannada. Tulika Pandey from the Department of Information Technology said, “In the past, IDNs we...

How To Stop China-Based Domain Name Theft
2011-11-10 03:58:00 By Rachel Buker Rachel is an attorney at Harris & Moure whose practice focuses mostly on intellectual property. Trademark infringement with respect to domain names is a very common problem, particularly for those who do business with China or even just manufacture their product there. It is unsurprising that many in China are quick to register domain names similar to those of the foreign companies they see. We frequently see the following sorts of domain name thefts, oftentimes by Chinese companies seeking to hone in on a well-known brand name: Domain names that intentionally contain a common typo of a known trademark. Domain names that take a known trademark and attach a generic word like “outlet” or a word descriptive of the product, such as “shoes." Domain names that are exactly the same as a known trademark’s domain name, but with a different extension. For example, abc.net, instead of abc.com. Companies confronted wi...

Hindi Domain Names With Bharat To Arrive Soon
2011-11-04 12:58:00 After ICANN approved Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) way back in 2009, India, after confirming the same, still seems to be mauling the idea of launching, dot-Bharat domain name in Hindi in May of next year! One may remember, ICANN had approved the usage of world’s scripts & confirmed that domain names will longer be restricted to Latin alphabets in 2009. Some of the languages approved were Hindi, Tamil, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Cyrillic & others. However, this move of adding a .bharat extension (as against .com, .net, .org) seems to be to appease the “Indian” within us. Combine these too & you have an ENTIRE website that not only looks & feels Indian, but is built to represent India as well. But wait, wasn’t dot-in supposed to do that? Personally we feel, this move, supported by a “rule” will enable companies to take advantage & win the never ending battle with domain squatters: The government will give trademark holders first rights on a dot-Bh...

Facebook Gets Serious, Clamps Down On Domain Squatters
2011-08-01 13:44:00 You know how when you type really fast and go to Gogle.com instead of Google.com? Well, apparently a lot of opportunistic people were trying to use Facebook’s mass popularity to their advantage using that. For instance, suppose you type in Facemook.com and are taken to a site with a layout almost exactly of Facebook and asks you for personal information, a lot of unaware people may just trust it and do so. This unethical practice is known as “typosquatting” and constitutes trademark infringement. On Thursday, Facebook files a lawsuit against several companies for typosquatting. The dispute was first covered by online marketer Bill Hartzer‘s website. In the court document, Facebook stated: “(The) defendants’ schemes also diminish the goodwill associated with Facebook and its marks, injure Facebook’s reputation, breach enforceable agreements between Defendants and Facebook, interfere with Facebook’s business, and unjustly enrich Defendants. ICANN for New .xxx Domain – India Against It
2011-03-31 06:47:00 The members of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number (ICANN) approved the addition of the .xxx domain to the ‘generic top level domains’ (gTLDs) , including .com .org .gov , etc recently. There is however a heated debate going on over the implementation of this decision, including whether it should be added to the gTLDs. The proposal had been rejected three times before but in Frburary 2010, a panel of US judges said that ICANN had erred in blocking the approval of the domain name. They accepted the ruling and began a public consultation process on whether the domain should be approved or not. Finally, the proposal was approved by the board with an 8-3 vote. It was originally proposed as a way of allowing adult content to be easily accessible to those people who wished to access it and those who wished to prevent its access mainly by children, adolescents and employees at their workplace. It is also argued that those accessing adult sites would be assured that t...

Jewish eminent domain
2010-10-19 09:50:00 The doctrine of eminent domain creates not a few controversies. The government’s share of GDP has greatly expanded since the doctrine was introduced two centuries ago, and the number of public projects has surged. On other hand, they are rarely public in the strict sense, as they are both outsourced to private companies and benefit them after completion. Democratic states have no right to expropriate private real estate because states must act as people’s attorneys rather than sovereigns. They represent private landowners rather than benevolently concede the right of ownership to public, to be rescinded when necessary. Societies, however, cannot operate with unhindered right of private property. Most countries do not accept an owner’s right to destroy a valuable painting or historically significant building. Sometimes the prohibition is implicit: the owner must have a new building approved rather than being barred from destroying the old one. The assumption is that a ratio...

2010-08-18 10:35:00 India is creating waves in the international community lately. Rediff Wins Domain Squatting Case Over Rediff Pakistan Domain
2010-06-29 13:09:00 Rediff and Pakistan have been in quite a controversy lately. In recent charges that Rediff has filed against Daniyal Waseem of Pakistan, it has won the rights to an identical domain name which was being used illegally by him. The Pakistani citizen was using ‘rediffpk.com’ which was claimed by Rediff as being quite similar to its own website and could be easily confused with the rediff trademark. To stop this illegal usage, the company challenged the individual in Geneva based World Intellectual Property Organisation(WIPO) on March 6 this year. The WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Centre found Daniyal Waseem to be truly guilty and using the site in ‘bad faith’. Infact when some Pakistani blogs approached him for a response, this is the reply they received from Daniyal Waseem who is currently in Berlin: Our website rediff.com.pk was there just to counter the propaganda attacks of rediff.com against Pakistan, but they bribed a law firm and PKNIC and illegally transferred...

Google Hot Trends, Domain Transfers & Moneymaking sites
2010-03-10 18:46:00 It's been a while since my last post, and if you're a longtime fan or reader I apologize for that. If you're involved in self-employment or internet marketing, you know just how time-consuming it all can be. Sometimes you find something that is a good thing for moneymaking and you end up putting more effort into that then other projects. Throw in other aspects of "real life" and you've got a busy time of it. It's nice to have a life outside the net right? Luckily, my previous work as a project manager and caseworker helps me figure out my priorities. I'm big on goal setting, writing lists and getting things done. But I do have my "procrastinator days" as well.So what have I been up to? Well recently, a lot of article writing. Mostly with Google trends which offers pros and cons. The great part is this can give you nice surges of traffic to wherever you want if done right. If you pick the right hot topics and get in on them in time, you can link to offers or seller s...

Times Internet Becomes an ICANN Accredited Domain Registrar
2009-09-23 19:35:00 Times Internet has announced that it has acquired ICANN accreditation as a domain registrar. With this Times Internet Ltd. can directly offer domain registration services to their customers without having to resell other accredited registrars’ systems. This essentially means Time Internet costs of registering a domain on behalf of a registrant would come down. The move doesn’t seem the best idea, and actually doesn’t have much impact anywhere because domains are a low margin business. Most registrars worldwide run on margins as small as a few cents and some even offer domains at a loss as a bait to sell other web services with better margins. And this is reflected in the prices Times Internet has listed on the website – domains.indiatimes.com.
