Moam will also be producing reflector jackets to replace the uniform which was abandoned three years ago. The reflector jackets will be having Moam’s logo with visible inscription “Driver or Conductor”. “We want to comply with the Road Traffic Act, hence the idea of reflector jackets and IDs. Most drivers did not like the previous uniform, the material was no good,” Moam General Secretary Coxley Kamange told Nyasa Times. “We should have started way back but were put off by unvailability of forex,” he said. 2009-12-04 13:00:00 In a full page ad in Thursday's Sun-Times, the CTA's drivers union took shots at "bloated" CTA management and ineffective state leadership."Given the vital importance of public transportation, it's bewildering that through the years, CTA management and state lawmakers have not come up with a permanent long-term funding plan for mass transit." More specifically: "Decades of systemic mismanagement and political interests have paralyzed the opportunity to produce a stable funding source for the riding public." Then it trots out the tired old argument that the city only give the CTA $3 million -- the same amount for 20 years. CTA bus drivers union weighs strike to protest layoffs
2009-11-04 13:00:00 The CTA bus drivers union is considering a strike to protest planned layoffs of about 1,800 members of the Local 241 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, according to a CBS2 Chicago report.The union president, Darrell Jefferson, goes on to insist the CTA's budget deficit is actually $500 million, not the $300 million cited by the CTA. But the union will continue to resist any givebacks, including furlough days.Furthermore, Jefferson says: "Metropolitan Transit Act says, in section 28, that management and exempt people should make up only 3 percent of the total number of employees.
