Easter Weekend
2009-09-22 23:21:00 We're just wrapping up a great four day weekend down here in Australia - hmm, four days. Yan-Shih and I had an eventful few days. Day 1 - Thursday night we went up to the Blue Mountains and stayed with a few friends. I've always enjoyed going up there - it reminds me how much I like mountain terrain. We meandered back down to Sydney on Friday and started contemplating what to do with the rest of the weekend. Day 2 - Saturday we woke up early and drove to the local supermarket, bought some food for the week (the markets would be closed on Friday and Sunday), and drove back home. Quickly after arriving home we turned the car around and headed out to Kangaroo Valley, about two hours South of our house. The drive was quite lovely, and traffic was light. We arrived at the campsite and were stunned by how large it was - there could be several thousand campers there. After driving around and locating the ideal spot, so we thought, we tossed out the tend and setup camp. There wasn...
Easter Chic: Couture Bunny Ears Hit The Runways
2009-09-02 12:00:00 A new trend is hitting the runways for Fall 2009, and it's one that would have been better suited for spring, because it's pretty Easter chic. Read on to find out what it is, and tell me if it's something that you would wear for more than one holiday season.
I Forgot to Tell You Something Last Easter...
2009-07-22 01:40:00 As I mentioned, we went to church for the first time in over a year last Sunday. The children pointed at the stained glass windows in recognition and elatedly remarked,"Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus!"[They know all about Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus because we routinely pass a ceramic, household Garden Mary forever praying over the sad state of the zoysia and, at Christmas time, there is a giant, plastic, light-up creche two doors down.]The Mayor, my most earnest child, concentrated fervently throughout the mass, trying with all his soul to understand the meaning of the service. As usual, he asked a lot of questions.[Which would be less of an issue if he didn't speak in ALL CAPS.]"WHO'S THE GUY IN THE ROBE?" he yelled.[That would be the Priest.]"WHAT ARE THOSE KIDS DOING UP THERE ON STAGE?"[Alter girls...]"WHAT IS THE PRIEST HOLDING UP AND BREAKING?"[Bread. The body of Christ.]"WHAT? HIS BODY? WELL... I'M HUNGRY."During a particularly quiet moment, when the parish was deep in silent p...

Happy Easter for Canadian Rabbits
2009-04-13 05:40:00 Animal Liberation Front Frees Rabbits Destined for SlaughterSimulposted with NAALPOQuebec, Canada: In a communique received today by the North American Animal Liberation Press Office, the Animal Liberation Front claims to have freed captive rabbits exploited for Christian rituals in Quebec, Canada. The brief communique reads:April 11, Bunnies in Quebec liberated from petting zoo. Their fate after Easter was unknown, to be sold to the highest bidder (farm to be slaughtered or testing lab) --ALF.Although not delineated in the communique, typical liberations of domesticated animals by the ALF also involve their placement in homes where they can live out their lives in comfort, unmolested and uneaten by humans.Thousands of rabbits and young chickens are rounded up every easter and peddled to children and their parents in a bizarre aberration of a religious festival that is purported to celebrate the murder of Jesus Christ, a largely fictional character in Christian theology. According to...
Easter Sunday Game Thread: Cubs @ Brewers 7:05CT/8:05ET ESPN, WGN Radio, Ga
2009-04-13 00:00:00 I'll be damned. The Easter Bunny is Canadian! And so is todays starting pitcher! See what I did there? Dempster's from Can- oh never mind. I love this picture, but check it out, Dempster's kid is wearing Crocs in public! Ryan Dempster looks to improve on his first outing today, while leading the Cubs to a win in this rubber game. Nothing will please me more than taking two of three from Brewers. You see, I live in Cheeseland, surrounded by Brewer fans, and Packer loving lunatics. They seriously use the winning of one stinking playoff game as some sort of rallying cry up here. This cannot continue. So please, for the sake of my sanity, WIN THIS FREAKING GAME. Dont forget This Week in Cubs! Julie and Matt continue the soon to be award winning show: This Week in Cubs! Let's remember that many more people than just our regulars are listening in. Last week I upset the flow with some inappropriateness, and I apologize to Matt a...
meandering through Easter
2009-04-12 20:50:00 Easter Sunday 12: When I was younger, Easter weather seemed to match the moment. Cloudy, rainstorms and general gloom, giving way to bright, optimistic sunshine. Then, one year, the weather remained gloomy and the pattern broke. My faith never did, but I realised early on, that God does not jump to the human tune. In ...
Happy Easter 2009
2009-04-12 16:40:00 May you all have a happy and blessed Easter (if you don't observe anything, may you have a happy and blessed long weekend).
Thank you, Easter Bunny! Bawk, bawk! (and headlines)
2009-04-12 16:10:00 Lou's getting all new age on our asses From the Trib: Saying he was looking for a "change in karma," Piniella sent beleaguered pitching coach Larry Rothschild out to the mound to yank Neal Cotts in the seventh inning of a 3-3 game after Angel Guzman and Cotts had walked three straight batters to load the bases. "My handoff wasn't good," Piniella said. "I said, 'Larry, go change the karma.' " Aaron Heilman promptly gave up a two-run single to J.J. Hardy that gave Milwaukee the lead, but Alfonso Soriano's two-run homer off Carlos Villanueva in the ninth put the Cubs ahead for keeps, and Carlos Marmol closed it out in the ninth for his first save. So does that mean Rothschild will make all further pitching changes in 2009? "I'll go out," Piniella said. "But if they're walking, Larry is the pitching coach. He may have a better message. Who knows? But it was just to change the karma around." Theriot defends himself against the haters From the Daily Herald: "My question was, 'Co...

Mixtape: "Is It Appropriate To Wish Someone A Happy Easter Given How We Got
2009-04-10 22:20:00 What better way to end the week on Good Friday than with a religious-themed mixtape. Remember when I asked the question Does God Have A Sense of Humor? My answer to that is I sure hope so, because otherwise I'm going to have to hear about some of the songs on this Mixtape on Judgment Day, and I'm pretty sure I'll already be taking up an inordinate amount of time that day, not the least because way way back when, my sister and I invented "High Fives For Jesus," which were more or less what they sounded like: whenever we wanted to thank God for doing something, or just emphasize how cool Jesus was, we'd do a high five for Jesus...Which was, I think, not as bad as this:But "High Fives For Jesus" were more or less plagiarizing this song in advance...... even though I didn't know about that song until Sweetie got me the Cheesecake Truck song on a CD for a Christmas present. By then, I had plenty of other Jesus songs in my library, like this one:Which I heard is being made into a...
Happy Easter and What Do You Believe in Anyway?
2009-04-10 21:40:00 My friend, Dal, the golfer/philosophizer sent an essay from a writer who scourged the Islamic faith, making it sound as though Islamism is not a religion and that it's a total-mind-warp-cult with impossibly incontrovertible calls to violence. Here's the anti-Islamic religion essay, if you are interested.Honestly, I cannot say whether I think the writer?s right or not based on facts. I don?t have enough knowledge of Islamic beliefs. I?d rather not believe it?s true, and I suspect she?s lumping all Islamic believers in one basket?extremists and moderates alike?then basing her assumptions on the beliefs of the extremists without admitting it. Also, several, if not many of the damning tenets of Islamic faith she listed could be argued to be true of other religions, like Judaism or Christianity. How does one draw the line? If what she claims is really true, then what? Everyone else on the planet declare jihad against all Islamic peoples? I find such extremism as hers scary. But...

UK Easter 2009 Togathering ? FISU Meditation
2009-04-10 18:21:00 The Easter Togathering in Norwich was amazing. Despite the numbers, everyone said how intimate the atmosphere felt and had a definite deep tranquillity. There were some amazing Satsangs covering subjects from the Mind to the examination of certain religious truth and prophets. Karma was also a topic with the introduction of the concept of ?providence?, a similar concept to eastern Karma but which originated in the Hebrew Bible. Many other philosophical subjects were embraced, the majority of which centred on spiritual unfoldment, meditation and the raising of our personal spiritual consciousness.

2009's Top 10 Designer Easter Duds for Dogs
2009-03-31 07:15:00 No recession for dogs... I tell ya! It's just a bunny a minute out there for the lucky dogs getting dressed up for Easter. This year's fashions include bold and bodacious sweaters for dogs this spring, and classic, more regal dresses for females with lots of emphasis on fabric details...and I'd have to say they're even more beautiful than last season's. My top 10 picks for Easter, with the exception of one (I hope) can be worn all spring, until it's time for bikinis.
Peep Jousting
2009-03-29 16:58:00 Easter is a wonderful holiday rich with the new birth heralded by the coming of Spring, the Resurrection of Christ, brand new Easter outfits, newly bloomed tulips, fuzzy bunnies, baskets filled with candy, glistening glazed hams ... and Peep Jousting.I happen to live in the Peep capital of the world, the place where the beloved Peep is made; Just Born, Inc. in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Most people enjoy these little guys straight-up and quite a few like them stale, but I prefer them jousting. Yes, it's true - I don't like to eat Peeps. Easter Baskets That Bring Back Sweet Memories: Candy By The Decade
2009-03-28 19:56:00 Easter is about kids in most families. Painted eggs, jelly beans, baskets stuffed with shredded colored cellophane and Peeps®. Easter, Athens on a Budget & Letting the Journey Begin
2008-05-05 21:35:00 I’m sat in the Smudge Family Wagon as I type this with my chauffer husband guiding us through some beautiful Dorset countryside, or is that the new man in my life ‘Tom Tom’, the very useful navigation system Scott’s colleagues bought him as a goodbye present (thank you indeed as now I can freely write whilst travelling instead of struggling with a map). Our last stop in the UK has been and gone, we’re full of a good ole English brunch courtesy of my brother and lemon tart, courtesy of my sister-in-law and we are on route to our hotel before we get on the Eurotunnel at 5.40am tomorrow. Let the journey begin! This past week has been manic beyond belief; from running around for computer leads, plastic dinner sets, organising last minute paperwork all interspersed with last-minute family visits, we are finally beginning our travelling dream that to this point feels like it has been forever in the making. The only sense of security we have is each other and the home we have t...
