Tough Economy
2009-09-30 01:46:00 The Company has decided to discontinue CPR training. The thought is that if someone keels over on the job, it should be considered a part of natural attrition. When someone is leaving the company for a higher paying job, the Company does not counter offer in order to keep the person. Likewise, if someone is trying to die, the Company feels we should not stand in their way. Why train people to do something that the Company does not support? Like saving lives. In addition, the Company will save money on the cost of CPR training and eliminate the loss of productivity that is incurred while people are training to save something that has become such little value to the organization. The best way to cut costs is to cut the labor cost. The Company does not like layoffs. This always results in poor publicity. Natural attrition is always the best policy and as such, the Company will step up its efforts to make this the unhappiest place to work in town. Or e...

How?s the Economy? Check Your Underwear
2009-09-21 13:00:00 There are a multitude of economic indicators to use as a barometer of the economy. Many are extremely complex, while others are fairly simple. One of the more unusual ones actually seems to make a lot of sense. Look at your underwear drawer! I was recently reading an article in the Washington Post (article) and assumed that it must have been a slow news day. The reporter was talking about how consumer confidence can be gauged by the underwear you keep. It seems that there is even a Men?s Underwear Index (MUI), and former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan sees it as a credible means of tracking consumer sentiment. Replenishment Item The theory behind the index is that men will replace their underwear as it wears out. However, when times are tough they will wait longer than usual before purchasing a replacement. So when money is tight the sales of boxers and briefs are in the toilet. When people feel better about the economy again you will see the sales rise. This Article is C...
Why President Should Focus on Economy
2009-09-21 07:40:00 Nearly two weeks ago, I suggested the President let go of his fixation on overhauling of the nation’s health care system and focus in the economy. If he did so, I argued, he’d reverse his slide in the polls and leave Republicans clueless. Now, a recent helps to confirm my hypothesis. In the FoxNews poll I ...

Porto Aswan : The Regime?s Response To Nubian Demands !!
2009-09-18 11:52:00 I found the news circulating around ?Porto Aswan? very interesting if we consider the timing, coming right after the historical visit of Gamal Mubarak to Nuba where he advised the people there ?Not to live in the past? hinting out that they won?t return to the land they want to return to for years ?Porto Aswan? is said to be a huge touristic project planned in Aswan by tourism tycoon Mansour Amer to join his ?Porto World? empire in Egypt and in the Arab world ?He is building one in Syria?. I do not need to elaborate how the historical , social and environmental nature of Aswan can?t have such huge touristic project. The news is causing huge anger in Egypt especially in Aswan , the people there are extremely angry and I will summarize their anger in what Mohamed Mounir has said : ?I pull the rocks of the great pyramid if the government approves that project? It is not only them but anyone who loves this country will refuse this project which unfortunately is not a rumor becaus...

2009-09-18 00:43:00 I do not think that those who were misfortune and spent some time in the ring road yesterday morning knew that President Mubarak made a surprise visit to ?..Carrefour in Maadi !! Yes President Mubarak made a so-called surprise visit to Carrefour store in Maadi to check on the conditions of the markets and internal trade in Egypt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I swear this is not a joke , he paid Carrefour a visit to check on the citizens and the conditions of the consumer markets in Egypt , again I repeat !! I will not joke about it because already since the news found its way online and the jokes have been pouring like a flood , you do not mess with Egyptian people . I will just say one thing , for those advisers of Mubarak ,for that entourage around him : Stop misguiding the old man because when he goes down , you will go down with him !! Mubarak did not ask them to go Carrefour by himself , he did not know Carrefour , he knew nothing despite they want him to look like as if he knew every ...
Les Miserables
2009-09-17 10:55:00 Al Masry Al Youm from two weeks published a small report about an Egyptian construction worker who work on a daily basis from one site to another site independently. He is from those workers known in Egypt as ?Fa?ala?. Anyhow what is unique about this worker and deserved to be mentioned in the newspaper is that he is originally teacher , French language teacher who was graduated from university of Asuit !! Oh oui a university graduate !! He worked for a while as a teacher then left teaching because it was not that profitable and enough for decent life , it seems that now the hard life of independent construction worker is better !! This young man is not the only university graduate who took the same hard road , there are millions like him !! I do not know why I remember ?Les Miserables? when I read his story !! Where's the second crash?
2009-09-16 18:21:00 The Bears who throughout the stock market rally starting in March continually cautioned on the "double dip" are now saying they were really bulls all along. We all understand that the economic future looks shaky... unemployment will remain high, commercial and residential foreclosures will continue, and the high deficits and weak dollar will put on ceiling on the recovery. Yet, September's stock market keeps rising to the incredulity of the Bears. The tide of rising asset prices lift all boats (assets, that is). Despite the warnings that housing prices can continue to crash up to 25% lower (per notable CNBC interview with Meredith Whitney on September 10 ), that will only happen in conjunction with a major stock market correction, which would resurface housing market doubts. The double dip scenario is quite real. One thing that Bernanke and the Fed have demonstrated over the past year is that they can actively manage the stock markets, and by extension, the assets markets, through pol...

Need Job in This Slow Economy?
2009-09-03 12:05:00 With today's slow economy, the Pakistan job market is tough. It is tough alll ove the world. Students graduating every year with little or no work experience find it especially difficult to land that first professional job. It is even harder for those experienced professionals who retire, are fired from one job or come back home after serving abroad but still need to find another one. Attain higher education, engage in deliberate self-assessment to understand the types of industries and jobs that would be the best fit for your skills, write good resume research specific companies and organizations, use a three-pronged approach to identifying viable jobs in that field ? reviewing job listings, networking and prospecting - but you still may not find a job. The openings may not be there or if they are, they may be filled up using non standard recruitment practices characterized by safarash, rishwat and or both. Lack of opening is not only typical of Pakistan but economic employment gr...

Frugality and the Economy
2009-09-02 10:25:00 The recent boom was remarkable in the record levels of consumer spending and consumer debt. Against a backdrop of rising house prices, consumers undertook record levels of personal debt leading to a fall in personal savings rates. In both the UK and US, personal saving rates fell close to 0%.Since the housing market and economy abruptly turned, this consumer extravagance has evaporated as nervous householders have looked to pay off debts, increase their saving and save some money for a rainy day (prospect of unemployment).Even as the US economy recovers - (e.g. manufacturing output bouncing back and confidence returning), there appears to be no return to the mantra of borrow and spend. The US consumer has gained a taste for frugality and it may last for a lot longer than just this period of economic recovery. In the long run, the change in attitudes of consumers and banks may prove to be at least one benefit of this current economic crisis. This new preference to save can be seen thr...
Doomers have been predicting a downturn for six months, eventually they'll
2009-09-01 07:23:00 The problem with financial analysts predicting extreme results, whether it was NAR economist David Lereah suggesting the housing market bottoming every few months between 2006-2008, or pessimists like Dan Dieghan on CNBC saying markets will crash 25%-50% a couple of weeks ago, is they can't change their stripes. If a pundit is saying the current vapid state of the economy can't sustain the level of the stock market in April, it's hard to call to suddenly say, it's time to buy, without appearing hypocritical, or worse, dead wrong. The bear market rally since March, including the surprising July segment, has defied the doomers' predictions that the market has hit the wall with each down day (Google "Art Cashin pullback" and then "Art Cashin wrong" to see how many times Cashin has chirped). Sure, that downturn will inevitably arrive, but an average investor following the doomer pundits to stay in cash would have missed this rally.Doomers just aren't as credible any more because t...
5.2% Rise In PC Shipments – Will the Economy Finally Revive?
2009-08-28 06:52:00 The economic downturn might not have affected India as much as it has affected the west, but still managed to apply brakes on our growth story. Finally signs of revival have started appearing. After a disastrous decline of 22.7% YoY in the number of personal computers being shipped in the last quarter of 2008, sales numbers have finally started to pick up. According to a report released by the market intelligence company, IDC India, the overall number of personal computers shipped in Q2 2009 touched 1.765 million. This is a 5.2% jump from the first quarter of this year. The bigger part in the growth comes from notebook PCs which have grown by 7.2% while the desktop PCs only grew by 4.4%. Things are not hunky-dory as yet. The number shipped in Q2 2009 is still a 15.3% drop over Q2 2008, but considering that the YoY decline in the previous quarters were sharper, we will have to assume that this is still in the right direction. Mr. Kapil Dev Singh, the country manager of IDC too thin...

It's the, stupid, economy
2009-08-14 01:21:00 There's a human element.First, there were the foreclosure and for sale signs up and down my block, but since we are misanthropic and anti-social, and my landlords are not planning on selling this house, it didn't affect us much. After a while, most of the foreclosure and for sale signs were replaced with rental signs. And gradually, those disappeared. There are still a few in the neighborhood, but most of the empty homes converted smoothly into rental properties.Second, there was my cat. He was obviously domesticated, and he was obviously out of doors, and he was obviously starving to death. We speculated he came from one of those foreclosed homes, was left behind when the humans went. I took him in, fed him, and his problems ended.Third, there are the unrentable houses.I wouldn't know about them, except that circumstances transpired to make this a good time to buy my first house. It's a buyer's market, after all. I'm not wealthy, though. I can afford a bargain, and a bargain ...

How Bad was the 1970s Economy?
2009-08-12 09:07:00 The Great Depression and the failure of classical economics to provide a solution led to the rise of Keynesian economics. In particular, an active fiscal policy to maintain full employment was a key element of the post war consensus. However, many felt that the 1970s, proved the failure of Keynesian economics. Against a backdrop of stagflation, neo-classical economists such as Milton Friedman came back into fashion and this led to the adoption of Monetarist policies in the early 1980s - in both US and UK.However, was the 1970s such as failure?Inflation did rise significantly. New Learners for the New Economy By Kirsten Olson
2009-08-04 17:55:00 While things are looking a little brighter, the economy still seems to be in a bit of free fall. (Except if you're at Goldman Sachs.)If you aren't looking for work yourself, you know someone who is searching for a job, who just graduated, or is tuning up their skills so they don't get permanently furloughed or downsized. What qualities do you need as a learner to adapt to our new economy? What learning attributes do employers seek in the flatter, fragmented, and constantly changing workplace? Based on a book I just wrote, it's clear many of the ways we were taught to be learners in school are directly in contrast to the qualities we need in today's economy and job market.Below are twelve critical "habitudes" of learners in the new economy. These habits and attitudes are critical to adapting to our new information-overload economy, thriving amidst constant change, and allowing you to enjoy your work more. Moving out of the old ruts of learning -- that it is boring, and that some...

Hold On, I Gotta Go Fix the California Economy
2009-07-22 14:05:00 FreeDigitalPhotos.com Man! It's like I gotta do everything my damn self. California lawmakers say they've figured out how to close the state's $26 billion budget deficit. Aside from $15 billion in spending cuts, including stripping $9 billion from education, everything should be just peachy! They're also printing IOUs, which is exactly how my friend Ian and I used to handle our borrowing-money-for-candy deficits when we were nine. I've heard a lot of talk recently about how California is basically an ungovernable state, with an absurd direct-vote ballot initiative system that basically lets citizens request all the goodies they want with no way to pay for it all. Cali also requires a two-thirds vote from the legislature to raise taxes, which basically...
