Robert Priddy?s Views on Key Human Values in Relation To Sathya Sai Baba
2009-12-06 00:04:00 In the brief article - Human Values ? Sai Baba?s truncated ideas - Robert Priddy, an academic philosopher at the University of Oslo for many years, and a former head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway, states his view of what human values are, in contradistinction to "divinely-instated values for humans" as proclaimed by Sathya Sai Baba. Priddy writes: "The values according to [or against which] we act are unavoidable and essential links that tie together personal perceptions and judgements, motives and actions into the sphere of common cultural values. They are central to grasping the motivations of our social and political life. Sai Baba promotes his own brand of ?five human values?, which is a simple and often all too vague recipe. His biographer Kasturi writes that Sai Baba scribbled the 5 values down on the back of an envelope when Kasturi asked him to define them. Grabbed as if out of thin air without any deeper thought, it is quite evident how shallow, rigid and inco...
Magnet Schools : Education Next
2009-11-15 04:05:00 http://educationnext.org/magnet-schools/The idea was simple enough: draw white students to predominantly black schools by offering a special education with a focus on a particular aspect of the curriculum, such as performing arts, or Montessori, or advanced math, science, and technology. Federal and state agencies, anxious to avoid the growing messiness of coercive integration measures like forced busing, directed new resources toward these magnets, encouraging their pioneering academic programs and giving grants for new facilities. Glossy brochures were mailed to parents and press releases to local media. The hope was that these well-funded, themed schools would ignite a passion for learning as well as spark a movement to voluntarily integrate schools....

Yolanda's husband, Tracy, is also suing for loss of consortium. Read the complaint after the jump. Follow me on Twitter at jenfernicola....

IT Infrastructure in Higher Education
2009-09-18 05:21:00 How employment of computers and IT infrastructure can help higher education in classrooms, laboratories, and libraries in Pakistan. Most public sector universities and business schools still lags behind in deployment of IT. Reason: Economically, Pakistan is yet not very strong nation.Although government officials' statements and statistics shown indicate that the economy has started to mature yet there has always been scaling-down in education and investment in the sector has not caught up as a priority it is worth. Hence, graduates of many public sector universities cannot compete with those who have an opportunity to study in good private sector universities. While much progress has been made in making computers and the Internet available to educational institutions in the past few years, nowhere computer student ratio is seen to meet student's ever growing IT needs. "You can see more than 25 students flocking on one computer and same number waiting for their turn," says Mohsin ...

Why do Florida Republicans hate education?
2009-09-04 03:49:00 Is Jim Greer high? Seriously. I want to know. Is he making bad choices once again fueled by late-night hanky pank and too much booger-sugar? How else would you explain this rant, rated “Pants on Fire” by PolitiFact, for so obscuring what is, at heart, a positive message from the President of the United States to schoolchildren about the importance of getting a good education? Check it. This is part of what Greer had to say: “The idea that schoolchildren across our nation will be forced to watch the president justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other president, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power,” he added. This detour into Glenn Beck-Land is not surprising. Under Jim Greer’s embarrassing leadership, the Florida Republic...

Sathya Sai Baba On Magnetism. Science or Sai-ence?
2009-08-12 02:39:00 Sathya Sai Baba is wildly at odds with some of the most basic scientific facts. His jumping between from physical to metaphysical notions, vague at best, are at grave odds with the physics being taught in his colleges and universities - and in any respectable classroom. In an early blog of mine in 2007 - A Great Deceiver ? Laughable But Still Dangerous - I wrote: "Sai Baba?s many scientist followers must have to block their ears or don magical-thinking hearing aids when he opines on matters scientific. Some of his pronouncements are comic, to be sure. But the smile disappears from one?s face when considering that Sai Baba?s devotees number many leaders in the top power echelons of politics, government, the sciences, the judiciary, diplomacy, industry, finance, the arts, medicine, and so on. He speaks, for example, of the nature of magnetism" ..... Since then, Sai Baba's critical commentator's have noted many past and current absurdities .....

Unfair Pre-School Education Requirements
2009-08-05 17:25:00 My daughter Maria is four years old, and she is eligible for preschool. Hubby and I have decided to send her to a pre-k program, to help build her socialization skills early. Of course we want her to be able to get along with other children, but it will also help her to develop her language skills. This will have a positive effect on her, in preparation for her transition to a proper school. Perhaps, preschool does not need to be mandatory in all schools. This is also voluntary for the parents to decide if they will send their children for pre-k. In general, public schools have programs, for preschool children, which are free of charge for the parents. There are private school providers offering pre-school, but parents are required to pay a monthly fee. However, in my city, they have a requirement that people who have a low income are eligible for the free pre-k program. Then there are slots available, for about 3 children whose parents are above the income limit, at the school ...
