New Urbanism and Environmental Issues Video
2009-06-02 21:33:00
While updating our twitter account today, we noticed a fun article written by Aubrey Cohen titled, “The greatest threat to our planet is cul-de-sacs!” The article/video has also created some heated commenting including one unregistered user who offered a drink of their kool-aid after making the statement: new urbanism is just another way to get tax ...

WordsDay: environmental issues?
2008-04-24 20:32:00
As we watch gas prices surge past $4 per gallon many places in the country and we receive ever more alarming reports of the self-destructive effects of our war on nature, it behooves us to indulge in what John Stuart Mill might have called the consolation of poetry. First, we look at Wordsworth’s warning to us in “The World is too much with Us”: The world is too much with us; late and soon, Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers; Little we see in Nature that is ours; We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon! This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon, The winds that will be howling at all hours, And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers, For this, for everything, we are out of tune; It moves us not…. Then, there are Sara Teasdale’s lines to remind us of what the planet may be once we have, as Ray Bradbury chillingly describes for us in his short story of the same name, disappeared because of our folly: There will come soft rains and the s...
CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lights) And Environmental Issues
2008-04-24 15:54:00
CFL (Compact fluorescent lights) bulbs are seen as an environmentally friendly replacement for incandescent lights. But are they really as good for the environment as claimed? The two issues often raised as arguments against using CFL's are1 - It requires more energy to manufacture a CFL than an incandescent lamp.2 - CFL's contain mercury which can potentially end up polluting the environment. The first issue is fairly easily answered in that even though they do require additional energy to manufacture; this is soon offset as CFLs last a lot longer than incandescent bulb.On this issue of mercury pollution I have summarized some of the for and against points of view below:Arguments For CFL'sOverall mercury emission by compact fluorescent lamps is less than the mercury released into the atmosphere by coal-fired power generation for an equivalent incandescent lamp over the same period. This assumption is based on the electricity generated to run lighting in your local area being gene...
Asian Environmental Issues Exhibition at SM The Block
2008-02-21 01:21:00
The Japan Foundation Manila's 10th Asian Cartoon Exhibition is currently on display at the activity center of SM North EDSA's The Block. The exhibition's theme is Asian Environmental Issues. Drawings and sketches created by Asian cartoonists focus on environmental issues, but given that they are cartoons, the issues are portrayed with a touch of humor. It is a little ironic that the Japan Foundation is sponsoring this, because the Japanese government has plans to dump its country's toxic wastes in our country through the JPEPA deal. But...that's another story.Representing the Philippines is Elizabeth T. Chionglo, creator of the comic strip Love Knots, which can be read in the Philippine Daily Inquirer from Mondays to Saturdays. Environmentally-related works from Love Knots and her other comic Bobita are displayed. I read the Love Knots series in the Inquirer everyday. It always focuses and sheds humor on major current events such as the Peninsula Siege and the ZTE Scandal. I'm...

BP Does It Again
2007-10-14 00:31:00
I am consistently amazed at BP. You wouldn’t think a company primarily devoted to oil refining and gasoline production would worry about ecology or being energy-efficient. But that just isn’t the case with BP. They are a major force behind the BP Solar Decathlon. The Solar Decathlon is an event that takes place every two ...
Environmental issues, biofuel and forest
2007-09-26 17:29:00
Forest conversions always linked to some environmental issues. Indonesia forest fire in 1997 caused economic activities became slowly, health causes in Sumatera and Kalimantan. Even smoke of forest fire in Sumatera reached Singapura and Malaysia. Burn the forest or grass land is the cheapest method to clear the land, instead to recover the acidity soil since the land partly peat area. Land burning is more harmful than its advantages. There are peat areas in Sumatera and Kalimantan stored numerous tones of carbon. If it is drained then the land will simple to be burnt and more carbon released. Experts say that peat land plays significant roles in global climate change.World’s demand of biofuel may threat the last Indonesia rainforest, said an environmental organization. It is possible that Indonesia will lose more forest in next years, and change it to oil palm plantations. Recent study revealed carbon emitted from forest conversion to make biofuel is greater than carbon could be a...

Rain and shunshine
2007-09-02 06:42:00
It was raining intermittently over the past two months or so, you can blame it on climate change and the global warming. When its rains, it really come so suddenly and can develop into a torrential downpour instantly. Then with less than a few minutes has past, the rain stop as suddenly as it started. Then ...
Edwards Wants Your Family Crammed Into Tiny Hybrids

Portable Water Filters
2007-08-06 17:19:00
If there’s one thing that bothers me about our world, it’s the way we’ve destroyed the planet. Especially our water sources. Rivers and streams are coming up clouded by chemicals that destroy our ability to drink it. Other filth is added to the water, such as trash, “treated” sewage, etc, which makes the water unfit ...

Whiting, IN BP Refinery
2007-07-23 09:34:00
You know, I don’t like newspapers. The writers always seem to be biased and a lot of the time, they don’t put the proper facts into perspective before going off on a tangent. Like with the BP refinery in Whiting, IN. This Chicago Tribune Article is screaming about increased ammonia and sludge being dumped into Lake Michigan ...

That is right.  The world we live in and beyond is vastly changing at a rate that not many of us are to fond of. Pluto has been written off the planet charts (even though I agree with my daughter, most of us will still consider it a planet in our world of “underground” knowledge) by ...

Last season brought the ...

Media in China will Cover More Environmental Issues
2007-04-30 16:35:00
A top Chinese legislator has asked the media to help the government in controlling pollution. During an annual media tour, where journalists representing 28 state media outlets tour the country, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, Wu Bangguo, called for a greater role for the media in raising awareness of environmental issues in China. Wu suggested that the media should create public awareness surrounding energy use and conservation, and should cover environmental problems facing the country - more specifically calling for in depth reports on issues that get the most complaints. This 2007 media tour is focused on topics of energy consumption and pollutant emissions - both areas that the central government are falling behind on in their targets. Although much of the state run media is, well, controlled by the state, utilizing the media to help in emission reduction and energy use targets is a good move for th...
