Pre-Turkey Day prep and other weekend events
2009-11-06 22:38:00
Don't be fooled by the candy-laden traces of Halloween still lurking around your house. Thanksgiving isn't far off (less than three weeks!), and now's the time to commit to either making the big meal or leaving it to the experts. If you're determined to cook, get yourself into the spirit at the Planning for Holiday Parties class at Wave (644 N. Lake Shore Drive. W Hotel, 312-255-4460). Chef Kristine Subido shows you how to cook a multi-course meal of spiced squash soup, ricotta gnocchi, brioche bread pudding with brown-butter caramel and, of course, oven-roasted turkey tenderloin and stuffing. Sound too overwhelming? Place your order this weekend for a turkey to-go from Smoke Daddy (1804 W. Division St. 773-772-6656), and feed...

British Sports Cars and American Hot Rods Travel to VT This Weekend
2009-09-16 17:08:00
I just posted a few photos from the 2007 British Invasion on Flickr to give you a small sampling of what this car show is about. As mentioned in my September 6 blog entry below, there will be hundreds of beautiful British cars from old to new. The British Invasion web site has more details. My friends from the Classic Bike Experience will be there as well to display some British Motorcycles. The Boston Sunday Globe named this event as their number one choice for "Best 10 things to do within a day's drive of Boston." And the Vermont Chamber of Commerce has named it several years in a row as a Top Ten Event in Vermont. The event will be held at the Stowe Events Field on Weeks Hill Road, just off Route 108. It runs this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On the same weekend, there's a very large street rod show at the Champlain Expo Center put on by the National Street Rod Association. A Tribute to the World Trade Centers when they were normal
2009-09-12 08:02:00
I worked in the South Tower Floor 86 of the World Trade Centers from 1996-1998. All the every day mundane memories of my time there - walking from the Lexington line WTC station up through the underground concourse, past the Chas Schwab offices and up the fast elevators (sometimes they would suddenly stop midway and head back the opposite direction, which folklore blamed as the consequence of the 1993 garage bombing) - suddenly became etched into my brain after 9/11. I sometimes search for videos of the WTC neighborhood like it was a Facebook friend just to see what I remember. It's too bad nobody was bored enough to video the concourse like Google does on streets. This is a video that matches my memories; it's only worth viewing if you're like me and enjoy the memories of a place you know well. My (then) two year old son would play around the globe fountain, he loved the water. That fountain looks stark and minimalist because that plaza between the two buildings really d...

I just found out that Magic Hat Brewing is having a "#9tacular" event tomorrow to celebrate 09-09-09, September 9, 2009. British Invasion Car Show, Stowe, September 18 - 20
2009-09-06 21:11:00
A boy and his car.My first car was a 1959 MGA. I bought it for $350 and sold it a few months later, a deal I had to make with my parents to get them to acquiesce to what I thought was one of the greatest ideas of all time: me in a sleek, fast, and nimble car to try out my inestimable driving skillI sold it for the same amount I had bought it for and I broke even except for gas plus all the polish, wax, and other chemicals I put on or in it. I enjoyed - no, make that - LOVED, driving the MG that summer. I spent hours each day driving or working on that car. It has rusted out rocker panels which I carefully scrapped out and painted rust-proof silver. With a meticulousness worthy of a new category of dementia, I sanded each wheel and sprayed them in short stages with the leftover paint from the rocker panel project. There was not one run in the paint. Of course, it took me more than a week of light spraying to achieve that. And I had to mask the tires each time to keep overspray off th...

We're delighted that our Breaking News Network is one of the event sponsors of 140 | The Twitter Conference in Los Angeles on September 22-23.The Parnassus Group (we like this friendly group a lot) has lined up a Hollywood-inspired roster of speakers that should provide a lot of personality for a tech conference. We enjoyed the first 140 in Mountain View last May, but thought the crowd was too social-media-centric. I noted that in a room of 300, only two of us represented real estate. We want to see all kinds of industry and small business participating at 140. Twitter and Twitter-based applications offer practical solutions to business development, and it's usually the people in business - real estate, retail, entertainment, hospitality, advertising to name a few - who figure all this out.As event sponsors, we're offering a discount code for registration at 140: type in 140LAPK. Be sure to get registered by September 6, after that the price jumps. ...
