Is the Cubs first base job really settled yet?
2012-01-06 15:58:00 This isn’t going to be about Prince Fielder, so maybe this isn’t the kind of post some were expecting, but as it stands right now, the Cubs really only have one candidate for first base, and that’s Bryan LaHair. Now we have heard Theo Epstein talk about how much he likes LaHair and is eager... Read more »

First Base, Perhaps Last Season
2010-03-18 04:48:00 Derrick LeeThe cornerstone of the offense for the North Siders is one year older, but one year removed from possibly his most impressive all around season. During 2009, Lee stayed healthy when no one else seemed to stay on the field, so those numbers were a little inflated.Whether or not Lee hits like he did last year, his defense is always stellar. He has turned Aramis Ramirez and Ryan Theriot, two below average defensive players, into an extremely above average left side of the infield. If anyone would like to know what Aramis looks like without Lee, take a look at some of the "Aramis the Pirate" years on tape. It aint pretty. Lee sucks up everything that is within...

Rangers will give Blalock a try at first base
2008-05-19 16:40:00 Hank Blalock is moving across the diamond. The two-time All-Star third baseman figured the best way to help a lineup that has clicked in his absence was to switch to first base, where production has been a problem for the Rangers since Mark Teixeira's departure last July. So Blalock made the suggestion to Ron Washington on Friday, and general manager Jon Daniels agreed it was a good idea. Blalock, who has spent the last few weeks on the disabled list with a partially torn left hamstring, flew to Arizona on Sunday afternoon and will spend the next few days learning the position in extended spring games. He could join the team as the regular first baseman as soon as this weekend in Cleveland. Blalock, 27, has never played first. He was a shortstop until he was drafted in the third round of the 1999 draft and moved to third. His only experience on the right side of the diamond was four games at second base in 2003, his first full season in the majors. "I'm not doing anything to benef...

Red Sox Have Depth at First Base
2008-04-30 20:00:00 If there is one area in the minor league system that the Boston Red Sox have depth it is at first base. Dodgers working Ethier at first base
2008-04-04 14:23:00 Left fielder Andre Ethier has been taking ground balls at first base for the past week, he said, "in case we ever need a backup or a backup to the backup." Manager Joe Torre said working out Ethier at first could increase the flexibility of the Los Angeles Dodgers' lineup by creating opportunities to double switch, or replace starter James Loney if he slumps or needs a day off according to the Los Angeles Times. On a day when Loney is on the bench, Torre said he would probably start Ethier over Mark Sweeney because he wants to keep the experienced Sweeney available as a pinch-hitting option. Congestion in the outfield is also a reason for the experiment. Ethier said he last played first base as a sophomore at Arizona State"Especially when you have the four outfielders and you have somebody that does something else, it gives you another opportunity to get [everyone] at-bats," Torre said. "It's not something we're planning on doing that will be a regular scheduled thing."

Draft Guide: First Base
2008-02-02 04:55:00 The second in our promised Draft Guide series, let's examine the sloth corner. First base has long been the fortress of slow footed, big batted behemoths. This year is no exception. Be prepared for four category talent if you're taking a first baseman in the first round. This can be fine if you plan your draft correctly. Only one of the top twenty-five first baseman on my board stole more than five bases. That was Derrek Lee, with seven. Yes, Carlos Guillen sneaks in there as well, but he'll be drafted as a shortstop in 99.99% of fantasy leagues, so we'll discuss him more in that the upcoming shortstop draft guide. These tiers and projections are based on a twelve team, mixed league format. Beware: this position is not the goldmine of fantasy wealth it once was. There are definite stratas of talent here, and the position as a whole falls of a cliff after the first ten or eleven names are called. There are some diamonds in the rough, but if you're playing in a 1B/CI/UTIL league, ...

Yanks Want Lowell For First Base
2007-11-15 23:34:00 UPDATE, 11-15-07: A reporter from WBZ TV out of Boston is saying Lowell has a four-year offer from the Yankees in the $56-60MM range. UPDATE, 11-14-07: Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch kills the Lowell-Cardinals rumor. FROM 11-13-07: A new twist! Dan Graziano reports that an Alex Rodriguez signing wouldn't stop the Yankees from pursuing Mike Lowell. They'd like Lowell to play first base for them. A big part of it would be to take Lowell away from the Red Sox, it appears. Of course the Red Sox would get the Yankees' 28th overall pick next June as a consolation prize. Graziano admits signing Lowell to switch positions would be tough, as teams like the Angels and Dodgers will be after him. According to a Boston television station, Lowell has already received offers from the Braves, Angels, Cardinals, and Yankees. Each is supposedly a four-year offer between $55-60MM. Color me skeptical of that particular rumor, but you ne...

A's mailbag on their Rotation and First base
2007-10-24 03:40:00 Every time we hear about a rumor regarding the Mets and a starting pitcher the conversation generally turns to the Athletics. Whether the rumor is a direct trade between the two clubs or comparison shopping, it seems that for years the two teams have flirted with each other. Whether it was Hudson, Mulder, Zito, Haren, Harden or Blanton the teams have never actually hooked up but have always been linked. Remember GM Billy Beane's philosophy is that a trade isn't good unless both sides miss who they gave up, while Omar is always looking for the most bang for his buck. Because of their differences in philosophy I don't think they'll ever pull anything substantial off. With that said if the two clubs do pull off a trade, this year I'll Be very surprised if it's for a starting pitcher. The A's aren't stacked with young promising pitchers just waiting in the minors to break into the rotation as they were when Harden and Haren were waiting behind Mulder, Hudson and Zito. In fact, wh...

Final First Base Rankings
2007-10-08 20:28:00 Continuing the series on Final Position Ranking - First BasemenBiggest Surprise - I've mentioned Carlos Pena several times during the September and as expected he is the biggest surprise of any first basemen this year. He was not expected to hit 1 HR let alone 41 of them and he finishes the year ahead of Albert Pujols on the player rater. And who among us expected that? First Base overall had several other surprises as well - Ryan Garko, Dmitri Young, and Casey Kotchman all outperformed expectations by healthy margins.Biggest Bust - The first base horror story of the year is a tie between Richie Sexson and Ryan Shealy, both of which missed significant time and did not play well when on the field. Sexson ended the season 11 HR, 25 RBI, 55 batting points, and 37 RBI short of expectations. Shealy was even worse having been limited to 52 games played which means he fell short by 52 batting points, 19 HR, 54 R, and 63 RBI.Right on the Mark - The first base projections by in large did a ...

Seasons in Review: First Base (Top 3)
2007-10-08 01:46:00 Yesterday subjected me to far too much emotion in one sports day. In the early evening, my Cubs were getting swept by an extremely flawed Arizona team, and looked pathetic in the process. By midnight, I was screaming my ears off in the front row of the Mizzou student section, watching my Tigers rout rival Nebraska on ESPN, in one of the biggest games in school history. My heart was torn — am I happy or sad? A day later, I’m pondering the Cubs’ loss while seeing Mizzou being ranked 11th in the country, I still don’t know. What am I to make of all this? Anyway, I’m going to start a new series here called “seasons in review.” While the recent campaigns are still fresh in my mind, I figure it will be useful to recount them in preparation for the 2008 draft kit. I’ll start with the top three first basemen of 2007, based on their year-end ESPN ranking. 1. Prince Fielder, MIL .288, 50 HR, 119 RBI, 109 R, 2 SB Pre-season Rank: #11 There wasn...

Another First base option
2007-06-27 04:26:00 Carlos Delgado has become a liability at the plate, before anyone jumps on my case about Delgado I have been a huge supporter of his in the past. Over the winter I wrote a piece title "whos on first" where I wrote that I thought a healthy Delgado would have a big year after playing last year with nagging injuries. I also wrote earlier in the season after noticing the leadership role Delgado had taken on that I thought he was the captain of the team. I feel I've been very patient with Delgado during his prolonged slump but this is the half way point of the season and he is batting .225 with 11 homeruns and 42 RBIs he has struck out 63 times and walked only 22. Now it appears that the booing from the fans who are upset with his batting is effecting his fielding as he has made four errors, two in one night. But the Mets don't have a back-up option with Julio Franco who is only batting .196 with one homerun and 8 RBIs. Shawn Green can play first but then he has to be replaced the opti...

Stealing First Base: How to Look Like the Good Guy
2007-06-13 19:11:00 James E. Rogers, CEO of Duke Energy Corp., is a smart man. His company, like many others in the U.S. power industry, has recently come out of the stone-age to declare that while government caps on carbon dioxide emissions have yet to be put into action, they plan on cutting their emissions without force! Not only that, somehow Rogers managed to finagle a widely published article released by The Associated Press that begins romantically symbolizing the entire operation of creating a greener and more ozone friendly industry by comparing it (in his own vision) to that of the Notre Dame or even St. Peter’s Basilica—what Rogers terms “cathedral thinking.” The educated reader can easily read through the lines of such propaganda. It isn’t as if the bells of impending doom haven’t been ringing for decades. Two things make this public relations move something that the American public will gobble up: first, lead with something grand and vaguely religious—Americans love that, sec...

First Base....Strike, or Run?
2007-05-21 20:10:00 Since society has put such an emphasis on being healthy, working out, and looking good, that if you are an attractive man or woman, oftentimes you’ll seek out the same in a mate. While talking with Brea about men, we both agreed we can look past guys carrying a few extra pounds in the gut! What many singles have a hard time understanding is that at first when you meet someone, they may look great. But when comfortable in a relationship, and especially after pregnancy, those good looks often fade. Many need to grasp that looks, bodies, and physical features (for the most part) WILL change, and sadly some don’t have the pleasure of aging gracefully. Couples tend to agree that in the beginning of relationships, physical attraction is deeper and unfortunately sometimes fades over time. When speaking with Brea, she was telling me about Adam who was a few years younger, a little chubby but cute, and had a great personality. “So, what’s the problem with him? Chubby? Get him on the ...
