Hank Blalock is moving across the diamond. The two-time All-Star third baseman figured the best way to help a lineup that has clicked in his absence was to switch to first base, where production has been a problem for the Rangers since Mark Teixeira's departure last July. So Blalock made the suggestion to Ron Washington on Friday, and general manager Jon Daniels agreed it was a good idea. Blalock, who has spent the last few weeks on the disabled list with a partially torn left hamstring, flew to Arizona on Sunday afternoon and will spend the next few days learning the position in extended spring games. He could join the team as the regular first baseman as soon as this weekend in Cleveland. Blalock, 27, has never played first. Manager Joe Torre said working out Ethier at first could increase the flexibility of the Los Angeles Dodgers' lineup by creating opportunities to double switch, or replace starter James Loney if he slumps or needs a day off according to the Los Angeles Times. On a day when Loney is on the bench, Torre said he would probably start Ethier over Mark Sweeney because he wants to keep the experienced Sweeney available as a pinch-hitting option. UPDATE, 11-15-07: A reporter from WBZ TV out of Boston is saying Lowell has a four-year offer from the Yankees in the $56-60MM range. UPDATE, 11-14-07: Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch kills the Lowell-Cardinals rumor. Every time we hear about a rumor regarding the Mets and a starting pitcher the conversation generally turns to the Athletics. Whether the rumor is a direct trade between the two clubs or comparison shopping, it seems that for years the two teams have flirted with each other. Whether it was Hudson, Mulder, Zito, Haren, Harden or Blanton the teams have never actually hooked up but have always been linked. Remember GM Billy Beane's philosophy is that a trade isn't good unless both sides miss who they gave up, while Omar is always looking for the most bang for his buck. Continuing the series on Final Position Ranking - First BasemenBiggest Surprise - I've mentioned Carlos Pena several times during the September and as expected he is the biggest surprise of any first basemen this year. He was not expected to hit 1 HR let alone 41 of them and he finishes the year ahead of Albert Pujols on the player rater. And who among us expected that? First Base overall had several other surprises as well - Ryan Garko, Dmitri Young, and Casey Kotchman all outperformed expectations by healthy margins.Biggest Bust - The first base horror story of the year is a tie between Richie Sexson and Ryan Shealy, both of which missed significant time and did not play well when on the field. Sexson ended the season 11 HR, 25 RBI, 55 batting points, and 37 RBI short of expectations. Yesterday subjected me to far too much emotion in one sports day. In the early evening, my Cubs were getting swept by an extremely flawed Arizona team, and looked pathetic in the process. By midnight, I was screaming my ears off in the front row of the Mizzou student section, watching my Tigers rout rival Nebraska on ESPN, in one of the biggest games in school history. My heart was torn — am I happy or sad? A day later, I’m pondering the Cubs’ loss while seeing Mizzou being ranked 11th in the country, I still don’t know. What am I to make of all this? Anyway, I’m going to start a new series here called “seasons in review.” While the recent campaigns are still fresh in my mind, I figure it will be useful to recount them in preparation for the 2008 draft kit. Carlos Delgado has become a liability at the plate, before anyone jumps on my case about Delgado I have been a huge supporter of his in the past. Over the winter I wrote a piece title "whos on first" where I wrote that I thought a healthy Delgado would have a big year after playing last year with nagging injuries. I also wrote earlier in the season after noticing the leadership role Delgado had taken on that I thought he was the captain of the team. I feel I've been very patient with Delgado during his prolonged slump but this is the half way point of the season and he is batting .225 with 11 homeruns and 42 RBIs he has struck out 63 times and walked only 22. Now it appears that the booing from the fans who are upset with his batting is effecting his fielding as he has made four errors, two in one night. Since society has put such an emphasis on being healthy, working out, and looking good, that if you are an attractive man or woman, oftentimes you’ll seek out the same in a mate. While talking with Brea about men, we both agreed we can look past guys carrying a few extra pounds in the gut! What many singles have a hard time understanding is that at first when you meet someone, they may look great. But when comfortable in a relationship, and especially after pregnancy, those good looks often fade. Many need to grasp that looks, bodies, and physical features (for the most part) WILL change, and sadly some don’t have the pleasure of aging gracefully.
