Why is the CEO of Chipotle supporting the film 'Food, Inc.'?
2009-11-24 07:17:00 Photo by Shamontiel At the 8 E. Madison location of one of Chicago's Chipotle restaurants, there is a "Food, Inc." movie sign on the glass partition, and above the image it says, "I hope that all our customers see this film. The more they know about where their food comes from, the more they will appreciate what we do." The quote was from Steve Ellis, founder and co-CEO. Considering Chipotle serves pork, chicken and beef, vegetarians may be surprised that this sign is up. On Aug. 20 of this year, I was given the opportunity to see a screening of "Food, Inc." at Chicago's south side Ice Theaters, located at 210 W. 87th Street. Considering the area is known...

Trip Idea: A Food-Lover's Weekend at The Abbey Resort on Lake Geneva,
2009-11-05 16:00:00 I can't recommend The Abbey Resort and Spa, on the shores of Lake Geneva in Wisconsin, enough, especially for those Chicagoans without a car, or passionate foodies looking for a unique weekend. You see, you can take the Metra to the Harvard stop (about 2 hours and $10 from downtown), and then catch a shuttle to the property, which means you can completely escape the city without the aid or expense of a rental car. And The Abbey is the perfect retreat for food lovers, thanks to an innovative culinary program, a from-scratch policy on cooking, and two amazing upcoming events. This weekend, November 6-8 and the following weekend, November 13-15, The Abbey will be hosting its "Great Chefs at the Lake" events....
Is everyone on food stamps?
2009-11-03 22:46:00 Shocking statistics hit me today concerning 30 years of national data. The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine released an analysis food stamp recipients and it appears that 49% of all U.S. children and 90 percent of Black children will be on food stamps at some point durign childhood. Although I was taken aback initially, these stats aren't hard to grasp. A family of four, with take-home pay not exceeding $22,000 per year, is eligible to receive food stamps. There are thousands of families in this situation and we must be sympathetic to the needs of our children. Two issues: are children, whose parents receive food stamps, getting adequate nutrition? And do we have to stimulate the economy so that fewer Americans...

Food for Thought: Thomas Merton
2009-10-28 15:43:00 "The notion of dogma terrifies men who do not understand the Church. They cannot conceive that a religious doctrine may be clothed in a clear, definite and authoritative statement without at once becoming static, rigid and inert and losing all its vitality. In their frantic anxiety to escape from any such conception they take refuge in a system of beliefs that is vague and fluid, a system in which truths pass like mists and waver and vary like shadows. They make their own personal selection of ghosts, in this pale, indefinite twilight of the mind. They take good care never to bring these abstractions out into the full brightness of the sun for fear of a full view of their insubstantiality. They favor the Catholic mystics with a sort of sympathetic regard, for they believe that these rare men somehow reached the summit of contemplation in defiance of Catholic dogma. Their deep union with God is supposed to have been an escape from the teaching authority of the Church, and an implici...

Hot Doug's Gave Me the Worst After-Lunch Food Coma
2009-10-23 14:30:00 Doug himself (Photo: Ian Merritt, http://blog.idmphotography.com)-I've been trying to go to Chicago's famous hot dog restaurant Hot Doug's out on California and Roscoe almost since I moved here two years ago. Hot Doug's usually requires you to wait in line outside, though, and for someone with utterly no patience for food-waiting, it never worked out. Finally, we had a quiet day at work yesterday, so four of my co-workers and I piled into a car and made the drive from the South Loop up to Hot Doug's. Yes, we had to wait in line, but it wasn't too bad (plus it was time spent not working, which is my favorite thing to do besides orgasms). I got myself the...

Cold weather and warm food
2009-10-10 01:03:00 With the colder months looming ahead, many of us seek out comfort food. Warm hearty food, like pasta, soup, and chili, for example. On a day like today, when I am completely exhausted from carrying around 3 bags, a wind blown umbrella and getting pelted in the face with rain, (oh and not to mention the 5 degree temperature drop in the last 3 hours), all I want is warm food that makes me feel nice and cozy. It is easy during these times to forget your fitness goals and good nutritional habits. Just because its winter does not mean you want to forget all of your hard work you've done this summer (or think its too late to start...
